Building a tyrant

So I want to build a tyrant from the ground up out of putty.
I have a number of question
1 will green stuff stick to brown expoy putty. I don't have the brand infrit of me right now so I can't say which brown putty

2 that's a lot of putty what can I use to fill up space in the middle

3 how big would be too big to fit the base?

Link to tutorials would be awesome.

If you are dead set on making a model from scratch I would look up several online tutorials and scaling methods. I've done full biped sculpting and it is no joke. It takes a lot of time to get proportions and defining details onto a model, especially in the smaller scales like warhammer or flames of war.

But like I said, there is a lot of great content and info on this kind of stuff on the internet, so get crackin'!

1. Yes brown and green putty work together fine, also yellow putty.

2. If you want to do actual ground up make an armature  out of wire, then you could cut little bits of sprue or something similar and build the basic shape with that.  If not, I'd recommend shaving down an actual ogre body then building over it with greenstuff.  That will help a lot with scale problems as well.

3. ? probably something you'll have to experiment with yourself, if you're using an armature you could build it straight onto the 40mm base.

thanks for the information. I've got some rough sketches down and ill update with further progress.

I learned a lot over on planetFigure forums on modeling with putty.  Its kinda their thing over there, but you just have to navigate the mess of historic figurines to find something compatible with ogres for ideas.

I had my first go at a BSB back in March that I modeled from scratch and I will be posting some pictures and explanations on my gnoblog sooner or later.

Also, go to eBay for your greenstuff - for the price GW/GF9 or any of those places sell you 6 inches, you can get 3 feet of the stuff direct from the companies who make it.  This is important, so that you can just "go for it" as much as possible and not worry about having enough materials to work with.

In answer to this (though a little late...sorry)

Yes GS will stick to almost anything.

I'd use the left-over bits of resin you get on FW models (the stuff that looks like tank traps) failing that if your using Greenstuff for the main body of the model then it makes no difference what you use; greenstuff will cover and harden over almost anything. (Or you could just make balls of Greenstuff and cover it with Greenstuff, that works).

It should be smaller than a giant. If you make it too big it will look stupid. Plain and simple. The biggest you want it to be can be roughly measured by taking a 50mm base, get two cocktail sticks (or pencils or anything) put them against opposing edges of the base then lean them in to each other. Where they meet will be the groin/ waist/ belly of the model; any bigger and it will be too big.

On another note; well done on going for this! The more you do with Greenstuff the better you will get at it. It's ambitious for a first attempt at greenstuff so I wish you loads of luck with this and I hope it turns out how you want it.

On the subject of buying Greenstuff, I always get mine off ebay from theTrolltrader for roughly £7 for 36". Always done me proud.

A late reply is still welcomed. I checked out that guy that's some awesome stuff. I just started today got the very basics of the legs and midsection done before I had to go to work. I plan on doing a whole gnoblog thing for it.

Looking back through our archives here in the gnoblog section - check out Warplockmonkey's gnoblog if you can find it. By far the best sculptor I've found online and he was based here at the stronghold of course. Unbelievable talent here and well worth popping that into the search...
