New to Ogres - How to Build 2000?

original thread ↗

Hello! I am goign to be getting an Orge army son and have been fiddling around with how best to put together a basic 2000 pt army. However I'm struggling a bit. The Heroes/Lords take up a lot of points not leaving much for R&F. A lot of lists I see are set up this way as well. Is it really viable to have so few R&F? I often find myself filling out a lot fo R&F and only having one Lord. I come from other armies (DE and Skaven) where I'm used to having more R&F while still having 3 or more heroes/lords. I guess it just makes me nervous. :)

Should I be having so few R&F? Or is there a way to balance it I am missing?
I played Skaven and I'm still having a hard time getting used to seeing a 9 man unit. However I remind myself to multiply that by 3.5 in my head. 3 for the multi-wound factor, and .5 for the extra supporting attacks, stomp & impact hits*.

Monstrous Infantry are a different breed thats for sure.

I'm new to Ogres so I have yet to stumble on the correct number. I never liked 50 man blocks of anything (except skavenslaves). So I'm having a hard time building blocks above 9 myself.

Netminder, in my like 10 Ogre games that I've played since I started last month, I've found that 6 man blocks die quickly but can be awesome flankers or chaff killers. 9 man blocks are pretty solid. 12 man blocks running 3 wide are very strong and can deny steadfast at a point.

Lastly, 9 Ironguts, with 3 T5 characters in the front is nuts. I survived a round of close combat with a great weapon horde of beastmen and did not lose a single Irongut because the wounds were spread around my characters. In that instance every Irongut after 3 did not participate in that game directly.

Anyways, I don't have the answer, but I'm new to Ogres so I like talking about them.

*these numbers are completely arbitrary--however they seem logical to me. When you become an Ogre you sorta trade your rank bonus for a stomp bonus to balance combat resolution.
Check the sub-forum for army lists : )

Here the above link shows a very standard 2k Ogre list.

Good luck figuring out a multiplication factor for monstrous troops - 3.5 is a good rule of thumbs but also consider the higher movement, smaller rank bonus, seldom steadfast, fewer units... and no 2-wound only heroes ... MMMmmm! ; )

Thanks. I guess it's just such a departure from what I'm used to, it makes me nervous.
Dont worry after a few games you will be much, much better off. Your opponents will take longer to figure out the impact a unit of ogres can have and that they are often not steadfast.

Hey and welcome :)

I started only a few months ago, last time I played was Lizzies in 4th ed ;)
So yes... Ogres were a HUGE change (no pun intended) I usually run my ogres 4x4 with 3 characters and a champion at the front of my Ironguts! its tough as nails, small and mobile and will slaughter ANYTHING lol (almost)
However I recently ran a hoard of 21 Ironguts! + characters. heres the battle report for an idea on how it performed - http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=26804.msg353214#msg353214.
- I didn't give up a single Victory point in the entire 4 turns the game lasted lol.
It really just depends on how you want to play :)

As for not having a whole lot of RnF models, have a read over some Battle reports/Videos in the "videos" section (bluetablepainting & Wargamingforfun) do some good ones :) You will see lack of RnF does not affect ogres the same way it effects anyone else.

Yeah, I started playing in (and last played in) 6th edition. 8th is a whole new monster in a lot of ways. I still can't get over the whole not attacking first when you charge thing (unless you have an ASL weapon). That was one of the whole reasons to be the ones charging! :) Hmm... I need to go back and double check if the number killed means fewer can fight back or if they changed that too.
Getting the charge is still very important for orges, more than for most other armies, due to the impact hits. But you will have to calculate significant loss of troops before you get to strike back. for a 3-wide irongut unit I use at least 8 models + 1-2 characters to be sure I have maximum number of attacks when I get to strike... For the math, that means that I spent ~130 point in the unit just to absorb damage - it is worth it but a big point drain.

But figuring out this issue will mean YOU know the striking power of your units (after their calculated loses) while your opponent will be ever surprised ; )

Be careful with with too small units. Even 8 lead belchers wont need many wounds to break if charges by eg. knight...

Cheers!
