Byronic's fluffy Ogres - Finished army shot in last post.

original thread ↗

Hi Guys, having really enjoyed painting up an Ogre army for someone else (I think it's over 3000 points, finally finished off his level 4 today, I'll get some pictures up in my other thread soon!).

Thankfully given the size of the commission work I did I've had a good selection of the models to paint, the only things I haven't done are (I think); the Giant, Yetis, Gorgers, and gnoblars, based on this here are the very complicated criteria for army list creation I came up with:

Byron's fail safe dual principles of how to make a tournament winning list
Prettiness/nice-to-paintability of models
LOOOOOOW model count (I actually want to own an army of my own...and fast)

Ironblasters are horrible to paint unless you've got 5 days, so they're not in, I hear they're no good in gaming terms anyway, gnoblars will take my model count over 30 (yes I'm aiming that low), I can't afford maneaters, and I loooooove the thundertusk model, enough for two of them, and the mournfang models (with some modification/pretty severe trip to the dentist and saddlery..)

LvL4 (Maw)
LvL2(beasts)/Firebelly
BsB

9 Bulls, Ahw - all having swords
6 Ironguts, again all with as close to swordy things as pos.

4Mournfang
3/4Mournfang
Sabretusk
Sabretusk

Thundertusk
Thundertusk

The thundertusks are next, once they're both done and my core are finished that'll be 1100points, originally this was meant to be a speed painting project but I like the models/went overboard on details for that to be true any more, the core took me 4 days (fairly solid days at that) to get to where they are currently+an hour and a bit to do the tattoos on all of them, so once all of the gut plates are weathered they'll have taken the best part of 5 days I guess.

I'll put my Ogre Achievements Here, and edit them into this post to avoid excess spamming :)

Think of it as a magic glove, like Michael Jackson use to wear, you could even model your character up grabbing at his crotch.

Cheers mate, I'm planning on doing a tutorial on them in the near future; I've discovered a hugely helpful trick for doing them which the world should know :)

Sweet painting and excellent tatoos!

Cheers bud, I know - I've had about 6 games with it so far and I'm really loving it, that could be because I've not faced a cannon yet though... I'll edit in my reasoning to the top post!

Cheers Matt, I was quite happy with the one I painted for the other army, but it has TOO MANY DETAILS! I just hated it by the end :D

I am really liking the bases and the ink

Cheers Johnny, I'll get a tattoo tutorial up soon, maybe a basing one as well, they're both simple, just takes a bit of prior knowledge/sneaky shortcuts.

Wow! Nice job!
I would like to see more your ogres!  ;)

Tah Wiedzmin;they're on their way ! (slowly) :)

Also I really want opinions on how low to set my mournfang riders please chaps, which of these is best/worst?

Please let me know, they're something I'm hoping to start painting pretty soon, the sooner you let me know the sooner I can procrastinate and paint them slower than I pledge to..... :?

The lower the better if  you ask me. The Mournfangs are great models, especially the Ogre bits on them are really a step up from the basic plastics, but the high saddles ruin them for me. Since your left version seems a little lower than your right one I'd go with that.

I think the lower version puts the emphasis more on the Mournfang while the higher saddle puts it on the Ogre. So it depends on which part of the model you want to emphasize? I like the lower saddle but you will need to fill the gap or add something to make it less apparent.

one thing that helped me decide on the height is the gutplate... the mournfang's gutplate really gets in the way if you go too low. You could go with a different gutplate, but i personally think those are the best looking one.

Man they look a treat!

The Mournfangs look very nice without the saddles, mine are heading in the same direction but with saddle blankets, pouches etc.

Keep us posted and show us the tattoo tutorial soon please, your Bulls look fantastic.
That thundertusk is looking sweet! Care to share the fur recipe?
And I dunno why everyone hates the standard mournfang saddles, I reckon the look pretty cool
I am not really sold.  They remind me of Harleys now with apebars.  Does not scream calvary to me, it screams motor-kitty
Remember they should also be high enough that they can swing weapons without removing the back of the Mournfang.

Firstly thanks for all of your responses guys: that's why I love this forum; I asked and you delivered!

Cheers buddy, that's what I was veering toward as well, however I was worried this may make it look like the rider was 'slipping off' the back, I've tried to remedy this (bottom of post).

Remember they should also be high enough that they can swing weapons without removing the back of the Mournfang.

Good point, this got me thinking... maybe a way to lean sideways in their saddle to sideswipe at people (again bottom post I've tried to address this)

Of course bud, check out dreadboi's thundertusk tutorial to see how I applied the first few colours, I followed the preshading and wash steps pretty much to the letter :)

Base (over preshade) My GW version of Vallejo 'hemp', snakebite leather with a touch of chaos black.

(prehighlight)

Then dheneb stone

Sepia wash all over!

Highlight each bit of fur with my GW alternative to offwhite: Skull white + shadow grey + Dheneb

2nd highlight - more white in mix

3rd highlight even more white.

That's it :)

I think the lower version puts the emphasis more on the Mournfang while the higher saddle puts it on the Ogre. So it depends on which part of the model you want to emphasize? I like the lower saddle but you will need to fill the gap or add something to make it less apparent.

Cheers Randroid, I reckon you're spot on! I have plenty of Ogres elsewhere (well, 15+chars) and I love the dynamic 'front heavy' slightly gorilla like look of the mournfangs themselves (same with the thundetusk), also I've already built up the bases a fair bit so I'm worried that the models would end up about 4inches high or something! I' happy for the mounts to take a fair bit of attention. I think Potter666's cushion idea is a great one, prob be using that, a good way to get an alternate colour on the model as well.

one thing that helped me decide on the height is the gutplate... the mournfang's gutplate really gets in the way if you go too low. You could go with a different gutplate, but i personally think those are the best looking one.

Very very good point, so glad I read this before diving in, glueing everything and then realising my mistake, much appreciated!

Cheers potter, consider the saddle blanket idea stolen, I might go for some comfy cushions or something, everyone needs a bit of luxury! I'll try and get the tattoo tutorial done fairly soon, I might have to demonstrate on a bit of paper until I've got a model handy who requires work though.

I am not really sold.  They remind me of Harleys now with apebars.  Does not scream calvary to me, it screams motor-kitty

Cheers Johnny, this is one of the things which got e thinking about the chains; what about with the reins mate (see below), any better for you then?

personally, i don't really like the low rider mournfang...i like the ogre to be prominant and bellowing!

thundertusk looks bloody awesome so far man! can't wait to see the final beast  :D

When I saw they I first thought they looked ridiuclous, they have grown on me though, however I think that the OK army in general suffers from a lack of dynamic models, I LOVE the mournfang, but I wish they had a bit more movement and looked 'mid-charge' rather than 'about to charge'. In retrospect I should have odeled them facing downhill a little on their bases or something to try and remedy this.

Also like I said with y built up bases they'd just be absolutely huge!

Cheers regarding the 'tusk, I'd have prob cocked it up hugely if it weren't for your tutorial :)

So here's where I'm at now, again it's got an IF attached by bluetack etc, but please let me know what you think of the reins idea, don't hold back, if you think its a pile of dung then tell me, even better if you've got any other suggestions let me know!

I've made a tutorial thread by the way, and proving my technological ineptitude even further forgot that there was a tutorial subsection to the forum :D its been gut-barged to the correct place now so from now on that's where I'll be putting full tutorials/article type things (with pics etc). Do however continue to put requests for recipes you're after etc here though.

I love the idea of using chains, but the one shown is too large and chunky imho mate (sorry) something smaller and finer from a craft/hobby store for jewellery may look more realistic....as if a one and a half ton charging cave bear/kitty/beast could be told 'I'm not keen on your chain....'

Looking the business so far though-Ace!
Right idea with the chain reins, but have to agree that they seem just a touch heavy.

I used a lighter, flatter, chain from Accesorise... (think you're UK as well)

Cheers for the input guys!

Icecrusher yours looks perfect, can you remember how much it was and how long it is? I've got 8ournfang to do :)

Also how 'soft' are the links? I want mine properly attached to the model or they'll just break in gameplay, I'll 'glaze' them with superglue regardless but I just want some longevity! Also I'll have to think about how to attach them, I might need some copper wire or something.

Iirc about £12, can't remember length.  Worth looking at the cheap necklace sections of high street shops for chain...

Mine are just superglued to the styrene rings on the tusks and so far haven't shown any weakness.

Thanks! If I've given you some motivation then that'd my good deed for the day sorted :)

Some picture updates for you guys, please bear in mind the big guy is far from finished, as is the kittykat (he's one of two, both at the same stage), what do you think of the flowers on his base by the way?

As ever your thoughts are welcome, I think I might have to re-do the leather bits which are in snakebite because they're not working for me...
