Beirach's Beasts: My VC army

original thread ↗

This Gnoblog will be dedicated to my beast themed VC army that I am starting to create. As of yet, they don't really have a home, so when they decide which corner of Sylvania they came from, I'll adjust the title accordingly.

My first order of models came today, consisting of a Varghulf, Zombie regiment and box of skeletons. I'm not really sure how to fit the skeletons into my theme as of yet, so they will be staying unassembled for now. The Zombies will be modeled as victims of my beasts. Seeing as they are only ever raised during battles, this seems appropriate.

My plans for Dire Wolves involve the use of Goblin Wolf Riders, as I really don't like the whole rotting corpse feel to the new sculpts.

My ghouls will be more beastly, as I feel fits the idea of the unit.

These little beasties should be arriving from America in a few weeks, depending on how long it takes for delivery.

This guy here will represent a less bat-like Varghulf, once he arrives (hopefully within the week).
Edit: I have him, now I just need to get a pin vice so I can drill and pin him

The Fluff (Drum roll)
Beirach was once a Vampire who lived the courtly life, blending into human society as a middle level aristocrat. For a few centuries this seemed fine, except the need to constantly move and change names so as not to arouse suspicion wore upon Beirach's nerves. The lure of eternal life in high society, which had at first seemed so desirable, was becoming tainted by the advancing bloodlust that surfaced more and more often. After 500 years, little changes within human society, and after seeing the same plotting and scheming from hundreds of different power hungry aristocrats over the years, Beirach decides to give up his charade of humanity and is overcome by the bloodlust flowing through his veins.

Leaving behind the humans that so vexed him, Beirach has returned to Sylvania, taking up residence somewhere within its forbidding forests. Having fully embraced the bloodlust within, very few traces of humanity remain for Beirach and he has become a creature just short of the crazed Varghulf. He retains some degree of sanity through his study of dark magics, allowing him sufficient grip on reality to control his physical form. Years of brooding and utilising his magic has allowed Beirach to exert a degree of control over the beasts and other creatures of the forests.

Along with the lowly beasts, Beirach has been able to influence a number of other Vampires, many of whom join with him when he marches forth under the control of the bloodlust. Some Vampires are much like him, having given up a large part of their human guise. These creatures still retain enough will power to fend off insanity, though not nearly enough to resist Beirach's influence. Others have completely degenerated into beasts, retaining just enough control of the Necromantic arts to keep themselves alive and regenerate any wounds suffered. These Vampires offer little resistance to Beirach, and he is easily able to dominate their will and control them as he does all other creatures of the forests.
To be continued later
@JJ: Noted, and I've removed it for now. When I finish the rest I may or may not add it back in.

The Forces of Beirach
Primarily comprised of vicious and weak willed forest creatures, the size of Beirach's host ebbs and flows with the tides of battle. When he is is pressing the enemy, Beirach is able to combine dark magic and prodigious willpower in order to attract roaming beasts to join in the bloodshed. Conversely, when Beirach is under siege from the enemy, be it magical assaults, rains of projectile fire or the hack and slash of close combat, his focus shifts to maintaining the strength of his own arms, and ensuring those creature closest to him do exactly as he wills it. In times such as these, large parts of the host may disperse in search of easier prey when confronted by impending pain or death.

Swamp Ghouls
Bearing little resemblance to the more widely known Crypt Ghouls, these creatures have developed in a manner more suited to the harsh environment of Sylvania's dark woods and fetid swamps. Their thick shaggy manes protect their neck and head, while rippling muscles as well as a lack of nerve endings go someway towards preventing injuries to the rest of their bodies.
My first ghoul unit with completed magnetisation. And their base showing the magnetic sheeting I used.

Varghulf
The transformation into a Varghulf is a strange one, as each Vampire undergoes a slightly different process and may exhibit a range of different physical attributes. Some Vampires simply become more of a beastly creature, gaining masses of fur, barreled chests and muscle bound arms, resulting in variations on enormous wolf like forms. Others remain smaller in chest and arm, but grow skin flaps that are just short of true wings. These creatures resemble bats to some small degree, though they are incapable of flight and their strongly built legs grant them a speed of movement far greater than any ordinary bat could achieve.

Jaarl
The history of Jaarl is unknown before Beirach found him, but it is obvious that he should never have been turned into a Vampire. Those with a strong connection to the winds of magic can still sense the taint of the Blood Kiss around Jaarl, a sure sign that he has been a Vampire but a few years. In spite of this, already his mind has decayed beyond hope of redemption, as evidenced by his transformation into a wolf like Varghulf state. Even his true name is lost, with Jaarl being the closest approximation that his feeble mind can conjure up. All of this matters little to Beirach, as a weak will is easier to dominate, and Jaarl has quickly proved to be an effective and loyal instrument of war in the grasp of Beirach's power. Once unleashed upon the enemy, his howls of excitement strike terror in even the most seasoned warrior, while his enormous frame coupled with an uncanny speed allow Jaarl to tear through steel and splinter bone with ease.

And the progress so far on Jaarl. Note the zombie hand he is gripping, and the hand I am sculpting which has a HE archer head in its grasp.

His arm is almost done, and it is fitted so that I can have two different attachments.

The standard arm with axe(Head had to be pinned as I snapped it off. I think it may be slightly off centre now.)

The attachment, with magnet that sort of works to hold the arm on

and the second arm, which is being sculpted to fit my hand holding an archer head.

Nieren
Nieren was once a self controlled Vampire, one of the few who had developed the gift(or curse) for flight after undergoing his Vampiric transformation. Although he could control his facial appearance, it was impossible for him to mask the wings which his arms had become. Being clearly inhuman, Nieren was forced to scrounge a survival off farmers and travelers, only taking those that were incautious enough to venture into the night alone. As years passed, the lack of personal contact or even the pretense of humanity was slowly sapping his grasp on sanity. With this slow descent into madness, Nieren's cautious approach to feeding began to recede, and more often he would take risks when hunting for fresh victims. Eventually the disappearances began to be noticed, and hunters both vigilante and of the holy orders began to close in on him. Retaining enough wits to realise his predicament, Nieren decided to flee into Sylvania where he hoped to be safe from the hunters. Using his gift for magic, Nieren sought out places where dark magic gathered most strongly in the hope he could regain a measure of control over his body and mind. Unfortunately for Nieren, the source of dark magic was not natural at all, but of Bierach's conjuring in order to lure foul beasts for his host. Unable to hide his presence from the powers of Bierach, he was beset by wild bestial urges every time he let his self control slip even a fraction. After weeks of constant concentration to ward off the attacks, Nieren's will was finally overcome.

Now a shadow of his former self, Nieren's transformation has been further progressed by his dark master. His features no longer bear any resemblance to a human form, and the bestial urges are now constant companions that completely consume his mind.

I love the alternative Varghulf you have decided on ;) Not a great fan of the alternative ghouls though :| But, I love the whole army :D I think the fluff you have created is incredible, however - minute criticism - I would omitt the second paragraph, and leave it with just the first and last ones, as they have a far greater impact on their own, than with the inclusion of the second :) Just my honest opinion... Loving the army though :) Can't wait for an update!

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a strongly muscled, lightly clothed model for me to start Beirach from? It would  be preferably plastic, as I don't want to do extensive conversion work on a metal model. I was thinking an orc model might be good, but they all seem to have a lot of armour, while fluffwise, Beirach's armour save will come more as a thick skinned bonus than from wearing armour.

He will be converted to be somewhere between a human and the alternate model for one of my Varghulfs(pictured).

Plastic Skaven Rat Ogre :D They are rather muscly, and have some clothing... And, the fur could obviously represent the beastial side of your character! Just as a basis though ;)

Hmm, thanks, but it would probably look a bit awkward on a 20mm base. At least an orc or other 25mm based model will simply look big, rather than ridiculously large.

Ohhhh.... Well, what about a strigoi vampire, from the old Vampire Counts range...? It would make a good basis, seeing as it is rather muscly?

I have been looking at the Strigoi, though their upper body makes it difficult to work with. Does anyone have experience with LotR models? I was looking at the Uruk-hai Berserkers, and was thinking they might provide a good base to work from, but I don't know whether they are actually a comparable scale or not.

My VC gnoblog, Beirach's Beasts

I think they would make a good basis for your conversion. But, they are slightly smaller in scale and proportion compared to Warhammer. It is only 1mm or something, but it is noticeable! However, if it is only the base for your conversion, I don't see this as much of a problem!

Yeah, well I figure I'll use GS to bulk up the shoulders and arms, completely remodel the head and hands, then apply fur to some areas, depending upon what looks best. And if worst comes to worst, they are fairly cheap so I can just relegate him to the scrap heap and start again.

I do indeed have exp. with LoTR models, and indeed the uruk-Hai and Berserker models are some of my favourites. They may well prove to be a tad small, and the conversion difficulty will vary greatly depending on the actual model you choose (pose wise). But it could work very well, you will probably need to add rags, trinkets and the like even after bulking him up to make him look more Warhammer because LoTR uses the very base gravelly reality to make them seem more realistic, whereas FB doesn't give a damn.

Good luck! let us know how it's going...

I like everything so far.  You could actually do quite the werewolf theme with those ghoul/varghulf figs you are using.
Yeah, thats basically where it is heading, with the Vampires and pretty much all the models being wolf or bat like creatures. I plan to model Beirach himself as a werewolfish model, though I don't want to go all the way to a full werewolf.

I got my Varghar today. :P It is a lead based pewter, so I was wondering whether I need to treat it any different when working with it? Any ideas?

Also, it says it is not a toy, and not suited for children under 14 years of age.

The only difference from GW's white metal is that you shouldn't put it in your mouth! GW had to change from lead to white metal a few years back as some kid ate one of the models and woundup with lead poisoning (or so the rban legend goes). And the 14 years and above disclaimer probably refers to the nescesity to use clippers, knives, super glue and spray paint with the model.

thanks

I remember noticing that European models tended to have 14+ on them, vs the 12+ on GW stuff in general.  But honestly it's been a while since I read the fine print on the back of the blister

Glad you got Vargy, what a beautiful werewolf he is.

Indeed, will there be any skeletons/zombies in the list or you avoiding them like the living dead (sorry bad pun), I was wondering how you would 'wolf them up' as such...Can't wait to see your Beirach model

Dealing with lead figures, eh? Well, when you're removing mould lines/flash, you could wear a dust mask (it's a good idea to do this anyway as pewter and plastic dusts are hardly healthy). File/scrape onto newspaper and then bundle up the newspaper and dispose of it. I wish I could tell you an environmentally friendly way to dispose of it but I don't know one :(. But as far as your safety is concerned, you've done pretty much all you can. You could wear glases if you wanted as well 8)- lead dust in the eye wouldn't be much fun .
I'm not sure how or if I'm going to run skeletons, but as far as Zombies are concerned, they are the recently deceased, so all I really need to do is have them looking kinda dead

Seriously though, I plan to model at least a good few of them as victims of the various creatures I have in my list, so bite marks and claw wounds will be the go.

Just like to let you know how my progress is going.

I have "Reanimated" my standard Varghulf model, to represent Nieren. This involved me green stuffing the exposed bones/muscle on his chest, back and legs, as well as filling in the tattered holes in his wings. I cannot really understand how it is a creature with the regenerate ability is forced to wander around random gaping wounds in its body, so they are well and truly gone. I then sculpted fur over the appropriate sections. His legs are joined to the body, but the wings have to wait until my new fur has dried and I have time to work on it some more.

I need inspiration as to how to mount him on the base now, as simply sitting him straight on is too plain in my opinion, and I can never do a decent sand/static grass base, so I need something to break up the empty 50mm base.

As far as Jaarl is concerned, he has had his torso stuck onto his legs, and I am working on a victim of his to decorate the base. Body wise, he is just as large as the GW Varghulf, but he doesn't have the spreading wings, so comes on a 37.5mm base(yes, not 40mm, 37.5 thanks to the French) and needs some support on a full sized 50mm base.

Photos will be added when my camera gets back from holiday, so should be on Sunday if I get around to it.

Well, for the GW Varghulf, I am going to fur up the other side of his chest, and that will probably be it as far as the model is concerned. I then need to decide on a suitable basing theme to give him a bit more dynamic pose. I may then have to fiddle with the shoulder joints to get the wings to sit right, depending upon how I go about the base.

I really dig the Rackham were-wolf looking creature.  I think that is perfect for a varghulf, as that could just as easily be a werewolf description as it is a "degenerated" vampire description.  I do actually like the GW varghulf as well, though.

Hey assim, Beirach looks aces. He looks leagues apart from the normal ghouls like the general should. I like the colours, especially the hair and skin colours, although they look a bit chunky - seems like you didn't water down your paints enough, although it could be the picture.

Keep it up, I've read through the entire blog and it was very enjoyable :)
Every man dies. Not every man truly lives.

Yeah, I don't know what it is that I do, but my painting almost always comes out blotchy like that. No matter how watered down, or how many layers, I struggle to get it smooth unless I lay it on super thick.

It looks unfinished, frankly.  Streak the claws and skull bits with brown or yellow ink.  Try to get the eyes to 'pop' somehow, maybe a few more highlights.
I think it looks awesome :) The claws need a little dirtying, but the rest is awesome :) I love the dark skin tone mate :) Very characterful :)

So I went over it tonight and gave it a few more layers of the dark blue and another black wash, and I think I managed to smooth out most of the blotchiness. The claws got another coat of my yellowed grey, and the skulls of the fleshed grey, plus I dotted the eye with a touch of white, which I think gives it a little more focus. Pictures maybe tomorrow.

As far as highlights go, where do you put them on a model like this? Not I'll probably go back and do any more now for a while, but I just don't really have an idea as to where you highlight the muscles to make it look good for this sort of model, or for my ghouls for example.

Funny you say that, beacause the left arm is actually in the exact same position as the hand would be for the beastman.
