Tell me a story grandpa, tell me a story! the child called as his grandfather turned to leave the room. After a slight pause in his stride the man turned,
Its late little one, and Ive got to work in the morning
Please? pleaded the boy. Knowing full well that his grandson didnt like being left to fall asleep in his small room with only a candle for light, Jacob pulled up a stool next to the childs rickety wooden bed.
Now you listen carefully! I dont want you interruptin me, I cant concentrate much these days! He added in an almost playful manner. The boy giggled for a moment.
You know those mountains you can see out by the side of the house? Real far in the distance? the grandfather began, the boy nodded in reply holding his heavy quilt up to his nose.
Thems the Mountains of Mourn. No ordinary mountains. Huge. Like nothing youve ever seen. Called Mourn after what happened to the original tenants, skytitans they were, but the world mourned their gentle souls when the newer, meaner tenants came and devoured them all.
The boy was engrossed totally in the story, he loved his grandfathers fantasies, he had a knack of making the ordinary world seem, interesting and full of myths and legends. It was probably because of his days in the Emperors army that did it, he thought.
Well them new owners they took over the place see. Each one of them twice out size, and twice as strong, and they dont half eat! Well, theres many of em whove risen to rule a specific area, and even one who now believes he owns the lot. But I know different. You listenin boy?
Yes! said the boy chewing on his quilt now in excitement.
Theres an even meaner one up further to the North. Hes not all there anymore. He was a savage brute when he was all there, but then he lost his pet. A Rhinox it was. You remember me telling you about them? Huge they are! Well anyways, he about as near to loved that animal, an ogres dont care for much cept themselves so this was rare. And then it gone and got itself killed.
How! the boy loved the tales of gory fights his grandpa could imagine up even more than the fantasies.
Wait a minute, thats not the point of the story! Didnt I tell you not to interrupt as well? said Jacob in a kindly but frustrated manner. The boy withdrew back into his quilt to show his intent listening.
Well, this ogre fellow. Thats what theyre called, ogres, by the way, the big ones in the mountains. He was so angry about these fellas that killed his pet, that he went to where no-one likes to go. Saw the dwarfs didnt he. But not ordinary, stubborn dwarf, these dwarfs was funny in the ead, like. He made a deal with them for a thousand slaves, they would raise his pet back from the dead in metal form, stronger and angrier than ever. Quick as a mechanical steed he served up their slaves, goblin creatures they was too, and soon enough he had his steed. They even chucked in some fancy armour for him too.
Anyway, now hes back. He doesnt talk much, especially to anyone cept ogres. In fact the only ogre he ever talks to is his second in command. Lonely chap, you can see why hed be angry all the time. He spends all his time on that new fangled rhinox of his. Skin like steel it is, maybe it is steel, but it certainly aint like a live one. It breathes steam. Somethin odd about it I tell you. His boys, they follow him like sheep. Most of em pretty silent almost all of the time. That doesnt sound as odd as it should, mind you. If youd ever met an ogre youd know a silent one was incredibly odd. And not only do they copy his silence, his fancy armour too. He has so much iron on him or around him at all times, they all love the stuff. More than gold! You listening boy? Oh. The boy was sound asleep, snugly wrapped in a ball in his quilt facing the window, content at the fantastic world his grandfather had created inside his head once again.
Thats it, boy. You sleep easy now, thinking its all fabulous fantasies. Youll learn, youll learn soon enough the way things are goin
