Fantasyfreak's Ogres - Pics of commissioned Mournfang and Golgfag 14/12/11

original thread ↗

Hi, hope this is the right place to post this?

My OK army has been a long while in the making, not because of impressive conversions, eye popping painting or anything like that.
My daughter was born just as I was starting it, over a year and a half ago.

Now she's a little bit older I've got time to dabble in a bit more painting, so the army is taking shape, still slowly though as I'm a slow painter!

Anyway I thought I'd post some pics here and see what you guys think of the stuff I've done so far.

Any comments and critisim are welcome.

Thanks, Fantasyfreak.

Welcome to the stronghold and this is exactly the place to post em :)  I really like them as well.  That base is awesome, very colorful and yet it doesn't detract from the model in any way.  I also like the leather as Corai as it really makes the model flow.
This thread is worthless without pictures
Hi again, thanks for all of the nice comments and making me feel welcome!

I've added some links to the other stuff I've managed to get painted, I put them in the first post but as images on the screen, which didn't work, so put them as links instead ;)

The butcher was last thing I painted, it's the first time I've ever tried blood/gore, it's not the best but I had fun doing it :P

Thanks, Fantasyfreak

I've got the rest of this army still to finish with various projects on the go(all ogre)- I find it hard to paint one model from start to finish

I'll post more stuff when I get something else finished ;)

Hey guys

First things first, would the first mod who reads this please gut barge it to the 'Gnoblogs', thanks ;)

So I've realised I've not put anything on here for a while, so I thought it was high time to do it.
I've decieded to make this into a Gnoblog and keep posting updates as the army progresses.
I would like to log the entire creation of my army here, to the finish.
I have lots of models and the collection keeps growing so this may take a while.

But first before the entire army,I will be working on the 2k force that I'll be taking to the GT.
This will be centred around Skrag(still working on the exact list, so I'll wait before posting it here).

This is still gonna be a tall order for me to get the models painted in time as I'm a slow painter and tend to jump from one project to another :?

Anyway thats enough rambling for now, heres some pictures of what I've been up to ;)

Here's a bull/gut standard that I got done for the doubles tourny...

Here's a couple of WIP's......(Irongut, butcher and BSB)

Some amazing stuff there mate top notch job.

I think the butcher looks fine atm, i like the scarf on the BSB as well although i have one very small critic, the standard pole is held very close to the body and it may make the model very static looking although if its painted like the standard of the bull/gut thing then it will be amazing no matter what. Is there a chance you could put up a pic or two from diffrent angels.
Thanks!
I'll have another look at the BSB and see if I can get any other arm poses off, although it might look better at different angles and with her other arm on, we'll see ;) I'll give some other angles for you later when I put some more stuff on here :)

Hey, so here's some of the stuff i've been working on over the past month, fresh from varnishing.

These are the gnoblars, I decieded to paint these to a different standard compared to what I usually do, this is because I wasn't prepared to lavish excessive amounts of time on them(after all their only gnoblars).
They were done using a different method than to how I usually paint and were done fairly quick for me.
In total there's 50, still leaving me with another 50 fighters to paint! but that can wait for another time ;)
All in all i'm fairly happy with how they turned out.
Anyway here they are;

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/phantasyfreak/Picture137.jpg

Here are 3 yhettees, they were also done fairly fast because the models are fairly fast to paint.
I'm pleased with how they turned out in the end.
I've got plans for 3 more but they will also have to wait until i've done the 2k GT army!

Hope you guys like and thanks for looking!
As always c and c welcome.

Thanks, Fantasyfreak.

Very high painting standards, everything looks great! I like the way you painted the ice on the Yhetee weapons and the work you've done on the bases.

Did you already figure out if you're changing the butcher? His pose looks a bit too dynamic for such a fat guy.

How long do you work on a (ogre sized) model?

BigD
- 5 fighters and 1 trapper; the beginning of a vast gnoblar army. A gnoblar revolutions is at hand!
100 gnoblars?! Holy moly, that's quite a lot more than I've ever seen being used in one list. :D
BigD: Thanks ;)  Not figured anything with the butcher :( he's been a WIP for quite a while and I think he'll stay that way for a bit(till after the GT at least). He's the first real extensive green stuffing I've ever done and so far hasn't turned out quite as I'd have liked.
If you have any suggestions I'd be more than pleased to recieve them :)

Not entirely sure how long I spend on one Ogre-sized model, I'd say roughly 4 hours from undercoat(white) to painting finished(not based) depending on the model, more if it's characters.

Slash; Yeah, it's a bit excessive ;) I just love Gnoblars and the things that they can do! The extra 50 will be used in larger games at my gamesclub where the gaming is more casual.
My Gnoblars' adventures have included
1)Chasing a unit of a Brettonian Knights of the Realm away after a one on one.
2)Groinbiter killing a Knight of the realm champion in a challenge
3)Groinbiter killing a men at arms champ in a challenge
4)Beating a unit of Wardancers in a one on one and running them down.
 I just use them to humiliate other generals at my club.

Denthor,  I will get the pics of the BSB up at some point ;)

Thanks, Fantasyfreak.

Hmmm. I'm not exactly a master of green stuff and your work is till much better than I can pull off (so I can't give you suggestions on HOW to actually do it  :)), but I guess the pose of the butcher is a bit too dynamic for such a fat guy. I would lower the left arm and make the pose a bit more static. Also, while his belly looks quite large, it still looks a bit too muscular (his chest muscle's are huge).  I'd try to make his belly and chest a bit more flubby (like the Greasus Goldtooth model).

Hey, here's a tiny update;

Excuse the pictures and the messy paintnig area ;)

He's just an extra Irongut I needed, so thought I'd convert him instead of buying, I'm quite fond of the finger I sculpted.

Right, I've got 2 weeks today until the GT and I've stil got ****loads to paint :? NOT GOOD! (1 Gut, 1 bellower, Skrag, 8 Trappers, 3 Gorgers and a BSB)

Anyway, I've finished 5 more guts, pics up when varnished :)

EDIT; Damn, just realised how bad those pics are

Great job on the irongut, and especially the finger. I have one in that same pose, but the finger I sculpted wasn't satisfactory so I removed it. To get it I carefully cut a finger off a spare bellower arm, and then greenstuffed it in place.

Yeh, it was quite annoying, embarrassing too in a way, even though it was just some bases, a bsb and a gorger that were not finished properly.
Bases really set an army off especially with quite a muted colour scheme but at 00.05 saturday, I figured it was time to call it a day :(.

As said though there's always next year and other tournies, I'm a big Ogre fan now(like I wasn't before ;)) and will definetly be taking them to a few more tournies at least :D

Great work, FantasyFreak. I'm a real fan of your clean and neat style of painting. I really like the bloodied mouth of Skrag. The content of the cauldron looks suitably gross as well. One small point of critique on the standard bearer; the right part of the banner could have had a better job with greenstuff. Now, it looks a bit too big at the part where the banner is wrapped around the tusk when compared to the rest of the flag-part. Great idea though, to put those banners on the tusks.

Hey guys.

I should be finishing another Gorger at the min, but I just stripped (from E-bay) the Pirate maneater  and realising what a brilliant model it is, can't wait to get some paint on it.
So, that and the Lmt Ed bruiser (maneater) are gonna be the next painted up.

The thing is that, the way that I base my models is always the same for the entire army, now I'm not sure if this will fit with the pirate maneater.

So I'm wondering whether to just stick with the normal basing or to theme base the maneaters for where they've been fighting.
Both ways have their pros and cons, just wondered what you guys thought?

Skragg is looking awesome - and your BSB is also sweet (not that I'd want a kiss, but...)

the pirate maneater is indeed a great model - I think I'd still base it the same way as the rest of your army though, as I value consistancy in basing quite highly - and you can work the details around it.

Ok, just a quick update on what I'm doing as I've not posted in this thread for a while

This is because of a bad habit I have - start painting a model, then another, then another, then another without finishing the first one.
It's something I can't help, I lose enthusiasim then go onto something different :?

So at the min I've got 2 maneaters and 4 Leadbelchers and a Gorger on the go.

While (not) painting all these I decieded to work on my Heavily GS'd butcher, which I've ended up scrapping

So that's it, gonna get a model finished tonight (but don't quote me on that :D)

On that subject I'm really impressed with the new brushes I got, they're Kolinsky sable, nothing special but when you're used to using some cheap crappy synthetics for 10 odd years, there is a world of difference, I'd urge anyone who loves the painting side of the hobby to invest in some decent brushes and some cleaner for them- a workman is only as good as his tools they say.

Anyway I've finished a couple of Maneaters now, so pics will be up when based and varnished.

I'm really getting back into painting and want to get this backlog of half painted minis finished, so expect to see this updated more regulary.

Cheers, FF. :maw:

They look cool, but the green tint makes colors and details hard to distinguish.

It is slight, and I can still see that they are very well painted, but the skin is a mystery to me. Standard GW grey?

I'm glad you decided to keep consistent basing with the rest of your force for these guys - I think in really adds to their look too.  I still can't believe you paint from a white undercoat either...

what colour scheme did you use to get the wood on the pistols on both models looking so good? - I realy like how the grain in the wood is clearly defined but I often have problems with that myself and could use a couple of pointers.

BTW: I've been tiliting my head trying to work out which book the models are stood on it the pics - is it the new empire one??  Is this a hint for a future project??

It's not that (I'm looking at my copy now). I'm betting it's either the old BRB (based on the apparent fraying in picture 2), or the old Empire book.

Reg, it's codex grey highlighted up to Kommando Khaki, it does actually give the skin a sort of wierd kind of tint anyway, but thats what I aim for
Wildcard, yeah, I thought consistant basing was the way to go, I just had visions of pirate ship decking and nearly got carried away ;)

Pistol wood is;
Black
Bestial brown over the top, Overbrush/drybrush
Then Bestial brown+ white highlighted on the grains (not drybrushed), this is what gives the grains more definition.

Thanks Ghworg :)

Oh yeah, the book is the old 6th Ed rulebook, funnily enough though I just bought the new Empire book about 2 weeks back and have been looking closely at it.......it's all about the Ogres for the minute though ;)

Thanks Coolman.

(non) progress rep; I'm still painting, although at a slower rate than before (is that possible?)

Mainly been modelling and putting stuff together though when I've had the time.
I'm working on painting some Leadbelchers at the min, experimenting with stuffing random things in their cannons, and also a couple of Bull units.
Pics up when I finish models, probably will be piecemeal though.

Oh, I'm also doing a tutorial on how to put scrappies together in the Halfling cookbook.

Expect pics of finished Bulls and Leaddies soon. (although knowing me it'll more likely be another random unit that I've not started yet )

Cheers, Fantasyfreak.

Great maneaters you have there, FantasyFreak. Your painting is great.

One minor piece of criticism though. It could be just the way you took the picture, but the blue of the shield on the pirate looks a bit too bright blue when you compare it to the rest of the colors. You don't really use bright colors, so in my opinion, the shield stands out too much.

That's what happened, for some reason the colours ran when varnishing,  destroying all the highlights and main colour
I've been thinking that it needs re-doing, I'm glad you said it looks odd as It'll give me the motivation to do it, constructive critism is great :)

The varnishing? Oh man, that must be annoying. I think it should be redone. It's a great paintjob, the shield-color is really too bad.
Oh, and glad to be of help!  :)

Yeh, I was pretty peed off, especially having spent a long time getting the highlight right
Never mind, crap happens.

I'll get a finished pic up of the re-do soon. (when I've done that is ;))

In other News, I just finished putting my Scrappies together- a long process.

Mainly because I got them through trade and so without me knowing, one wasn't complete.
It was 2 much needed structual parts too that were missing, I had to patch it up using whatever was going, but it came out pretty well and different from the first, so ended positively.

Although this means that I won't be able to finish my tutorial as I was using the (unknown) incomplete one for the pics :( Apologies.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Too bad you're not able to finish the tutorial. It was a good thread.

Good luck painting the scraplaunchers.

Now you're asking! :? I think it was;

Enchanted blue basecoat
EB+Ice blue hightlight on the raised areas
Ice blue               "                  "
IB+ skull white        "                  "
Enchanted blue+chaos black+ lots of water directed into the recesses
Skull white on the raised areas.

Not certain on that though, my memory sucks ;)

Thanks BigD.
Yeh, it's really annoying about the scrappy tute :(, maybe i'll finish it one day though :?

Very nice work! I really like your very traditional theme - it's ogres, that's it  - the tight colour scheme is great. I bet they look great on the battlefield.

Thanks Thorgrizzly^^  :)

I had to drag this G'log back from the depths of page 5, I've not managed to do much to my Ogres in the last few months as most of my time has gone on real life stuff, Mordhiem or WE's but a couple of weeks ago I was just itching to paint some more of the Ogres and so now they have my undivided attention! - I think sometimes a change is as good as a rest :)

Ok, so I promised to repaint the Gut-plate on my maneater after an unfortunate varnishing incident that left it looking like cack, so I finished that and didn't re-varnish just to be on the safe side.

Also, I had my Scrappies lying around for far too long half-painted, it was time to finish them, not the standard I usually paint, but these things were so irritating to paint I just wanted them done and plus I don't pay as much attention to Gnobbies as I do with Ogres as they're Largely insignificant ;)
Also, a word to the wise- don't batch paint 2, it sucks!

This one is the normal scrappy

And this is the one that I had to convert, I did a trade that left me with an incomplete scrappy (as some of you'll know) which gave me no option but to convert;

Here too is a random Leadbelcher that I finised too, thrown in for good measure.

Currently I'm finishing the paymaster Maneater, so pics of that soon.

C&C welcomed.

Cheers, Fantasyfreak :)

Ok I took the Ogres to a 1 day tourney today and got massacred twice, drawn once, nice tourney though, I enjoyed it but am now totally convinced that Ogres in a competative atmosphere are no-go.

I did take the best army award though, which pleased me greatly  :D

I've finished the Slavegiant (suspiciously just before the tourney  ;) ) but will hold off on pics as I would like to enter it in the Big Name painting contest.

Wow, thanks guys!  :o

I never noticed my painting getting better, seriously.

Saying that though, since I started bashing the forums (this one mostly but others too) I've experimented so much with different techniques, methods and products.
Feedback helps too, majorly, and it has been the forums, along with tourney dates that have kept me motivated with painting.
Thanks to all you guys I've now won one best army award and a best army nomination award at the UKGT with this army, which still suprises me, but I'm very proud of.

I'll get these pics up of the finished Giant as soon as, just want to check which big name comp is next  :)

Congrats on the awards, your deserve them. That giant is seriously awesome.
One thing to note, when the blood hits the cloth waistband, it would actually widen out as it gets absorbed by the fabric. So the border of the blood stain wouldn't be even with the blood on the skin.

Reg, I'll note that for next time, thanks  :)
TBH, I messed the blood up completely.  IIRC it was late at night and I slipped a little, making the are of blood area bigger than I would have liked and I'm not happy with that bit.  There's not much you can do though when you've started painting blood over your already highlighted colours (unless you want to do them again  ) it's all or nothing.

No painting for these guys for a while I'm afraid, too busy with the WE's.
That doesn't stop me from taking them to tournies though!  :D

There's a little one-day tourney coming up in a couple o'weeks - our club is putting on one for everyone later in the year and this is really just a tester for the big(ish) one.
Still, that doesn't make it any less of a tourney, I'll be trying to get my boys some grub and hopefully an award that isn't the one for last place

Here's what I'll be taking;

Grut's big bellied basher's

Grut the bullgutted rankbreaking flankbuster

Would have preffered another unit of Yhettees in place of the Leaddies but I could be bothered to break out the paints for them.
I need to make a movement tray for the Leaddies but that shouldn't prove too much of a struggle, and will possibly be done the night before, knowing what I'm like  ;)

I played in the tourney yesterday and recieved joint best painted.
My gaming was strange, I had 3 excellent games and really enjoyed the day, but lost all 3

I very nearly won my first game against Delves, took out all his stuff apart the Black Guard (ASF) and Hydra, as I had no tools to deal with them, instead of just hiding (which would have won the game) I went right at them and lost because of it  :(
Brilliant game though!

The second was against Delves again!
I had REALLY bad luck in this;
7 Units had to take a panic test all at the same time and 6 ran, all because a unit lost in combat by 1 and fled!
I charged Yhettees into RXB's and lost in combat!
I Finally got my Giant and a unit of 3 bullcharging Guts in the side of 20 spears with a LV2 in it........the Giant Yelled and Balled and protected the unit from certain doom  :x
A strange game, in which I had a minor loss.

The last game was against a friend who was using Dwarves, I didn't try too hard in this one and just a had a laugh instead;
Cast Braingobbler a hell of a lot of times, just for a laugh hoping for a quick fix as the guy usually fails panics at high Ld, didn't work and I got soundly beat in the end.
Special mention goes to my Yhettees that recieved one wound from a flame cannon, panicked, and ran 17, yes 17" off the board
Good laugh though!

how did hell heart work? i have been thinking about fielding a butcher with it in a upcomming tournament.
how did hell heart work? i have been thinking about fielding a butcher with it in a upcomming tournament.

I've nothing but praise for it usually, used it in quite a few games recently and it has effectively shut down the magic phase.

In this tourny though it was wasted completely as I played Dwarves, Dark Elves with no magic and Dark Elves with just a Lv2 and a dagger.
Only got one chance to use it (didn't even need to) and when I did he rolled no doubles

Ahhh, you're going AGoM!  Me too!  Good to be seeing your army again (taking ogres right?) seeing as they were a major influence in my starting ogres in the first place.

Very cool giant, congratulations on the win.  Could have saved it for the giantbreaker comp though...

I'm going AGoM, unfortunately won't be taking the Ogres though as I've put them in 5 tournies over the last year, more the year before too, it's time for a change starting with AGoM, I'll be taking my WE's for a bit  ;)

I'll see you and your Ogres there though  :)

Well that's the first day of AGoM over, very enjoyable too!

Met and played the Strongholds very own "Chugger" , also had a word with Corai.

My results so far are, 1/1/1 , not so bad really methinks, especially with a weird list and absolutely no practice with it  :D
Played Daemons, VC and Ogres.

Tomorrow will probably bomb though  ;)

Will let you know the thinking behind the list tommorrow SS.

Tournament was pretty good, I finished very badly, losing all of my games on day 2.

Here's a quick run down of my games;

1. Ogres
This was against Chugger, imagine our shock when out of 3 Ogre armies in the tournament, we're drawn against each other.
Good game, he was rocking the Mawseeker D'star.
I played pretty cagey with a lot of fleeing, it was very close all the way through, could have gone either way I guess.
Highlights where my Hunters putting a wound on a Mawseeker BSB and 2 wounds on a Bruiser with their Crossbows.
DRAW

2.Daemons
Fun.  :|
Yep, a bit of flickering fire and flamer shots later and I don't have much left.
Highlight of the game for me was my sword Gnob putting a wound on a Nurgle herald  :D
Wasn't the most fun opponent in the world, pissed me off a little actually.
Massacre against.

3.Vampires
I killed the General and that was the end of that  :P
Very nice opponent and enjoyable.
Massacre

4.Dark Elves
Major shooty, magic , avoidence list with Hydra
The guy played so slow that we went over our time by nearly 10 mins and only finished turn 4, my turns where taking less than 5mins, his 20mins+. (my friend played him also and only got to turn 3!)
Very annoying really.
Not much I could do here, Ogres don't like massed shooting or Hydras.
I managed to get the Hydra down to half wounds with a Hunter Crossbow and killed the Pendant BSB which felt like a moral victory over everything that is evil.
Solid loss

5. Dark Elves
Like the last list but a little nicer with a unit of Cold ones and one less Shade unit for RXB's
Very nice opponent but little I could do to overcome the shootyness and magic
Massacre against

6. Vampires
Same guy I played earlier.
This time he played a bit better and we traded blows.
I Just charged and challenged the General with my General, he had ASF and 4 Attacks but needed 4's to wound, I was confident I could survive and then smash him into paste FTW, unfortunately my Giant was in the same combat, 4 Ghouls got 3 poisoned attacks against the Giant to kill him..............then guess where he fell?
Straight on my general to inflict 2 wounds and let the Vamp finish him off  :o
Never mind, it was a good game and he was a nice guy.
Massacre against.

Although I had 2 games that where pretty crappy I still enjoyed the tournament, it was very well run.

I couldn't believe the army that Corai put out, it took him 1 (YES ONE!!) week to paint and looked very nice, he went on to win best army with some very strong competition!

Nice tourney, had a bit of fun with the Ogres, but just can't compete with Daemons and DE's.
Looking forward to the new book and getting my WE's ready for the mean time  8)

Yep, unreal isn't it?
Corai is a machine :D

Both of the bad(ish) games weren't the worst I've played, not enough to make me tick "auful game" although I did think about it game 2
The Daemon one was the worst, the other guy was ok really, just really slow.

Yes, I could see the Giant landing on my Bruiser before it happened, but them kind of things are what make the game fun sometimes, I thought the game was pretty much over, then one unrelated incident later and I'm on the back foot
Shouldn't have worn blinkers really

Great to see you there FF, closest game i've had in a while.

I was lucky i guess, all my opponets were very cool, including that VC player.

Corai got my vote, just for that small dragon (flamer) chasing the peasant, best thing i saw all weekend by far.  Had no idea about the 1 week thing though, thats incredible...

Nothing really new to see here.......just went to a tourney last weekend and finished 15th!

I wrote a brief review of the games in the Tales of Conquest forum, so thought I'd just copy and paste them here;

Yep I finished 15th
Highest Ogre player out the lot of us, and highest member of our club!
I was quite pleased and suprised

First game I got VC's, a pretty hard one with most of the toys and 3 Vamps.
Deciding moments were on one flank, I set up a unit to take a charge from the Wrath's with 2 units and Bruiser to counter charge (numbers, Warbanner, flank, tenderiser), he wiped out the unit and everything panicked, the WB unit got run down in the aftermath too

The other flank was held by Yhettes, looking menacingly at a sprit host and threatening to come through a wood to flank his blocks, he charged with a vamp that had Lynci's, I fled thinking it was a good idea to leave to the Vamp on his own in view of my charges but the now unthreatened Sprit host was free to move into a good postion to help.
Silly really.

I was outplayed by a better player with a better army and got massacred.

Next up I faced Ogres!

This was a funny old game, I worked my ass off,  fleeing and countercharging, because combats where effectively decided on who made the best dice rolls, I bombed a bit.
Worst moments where;

Bruiser with Tenderiser and a unit of 3 Guts charging a unit of 4 Guts with a banner;
I scored 3 wounds   when I was imagining wiping at out a couple of Ogres (Big T tends to help a bit usually), he wiped out an Ogre and scored another wound, in return and my unit fled 3"
and got ran down.

A unit of Bulls charge a unit of guts in the flank, 9 attacks later they fail to wipe out 1 Ogre, only scoring 1 wound, in return they get battered a bit and ran down.

Despite all this I managed to get most of his big boys, all his characters too, making it a minor win, 40 points from a major.
Really had to work for it though.

Next up was Vamps again, this time was a massive horde with 3 Vamps, 2 corpse carts, a big unit of Wraths with Banshee, and the Crown.
I made a mess, stars of the show were probably maneaters with their 15 attacks
I charged most units front and side
I put the bruiser with Big T in the Wraths, with a unit of Bulls for outnumber when I killed a few, wiped them in 2 rounds.
Major win.

I really enjoyed this tourney, had 3 great games against 3 great people, which is the main thing.
Finishing as high as I did was a bonus.

Well done to WC for taking best painted!

Here we are again, the thread will never die

I've not really played much recently with the Ogres, last tourney with them was the one outlined above.
The most memorable game I played in the last few months was horrendous.
It was 4k in which I took Skrag plus 2 Butchers.
First turn of the game, Hellcannon misfires.
At the end of that Misfire I had one Butcher left on a wound and another who'd took one or two but could no longer cast spells  :o
It went downhill from there.

In other news, this Gnoblog got made a 'Legendary Gnoblog'!  8)
Plus the army was featured in The Bellower!

So good times for the Gnoblog  :D

Even better times are 8th Ed!
Us Ogres get a great boost, it's gonna be great testing the Ogres out to see what's what.
Me and Wildcard were both going to be playing a game last Monday, not with each other, but on the same day at our club, what was funny was that we both pretty much wrote the same list
His seems to be evolving slightly differently to mine now though which is good as it gives a chance to share experiences with different things.

So what is next for the Gnoblog apart from some half-arsed battle reps and musings on 8th?
Well, I'll be defo looking at starting a new Ogre army, but I'm thinking of holding off until our new book is out.
I think with the new Ogre artwork in the 8th BRB, it's not a million miles away, so will wait on painting a new army and get inspired by the new models, fluff and of course list first.

I'm playing another game of 8th tommorrow, so will give a little bat rep of what went on here.

Adios.

So I played my second game of 8th this evening, with my Ogres!

My list was;

Tyrant
Greatskull
Greyback pelt
Wyrdstone
Cathayan Longsword

BSB
Sword of strife
Charmed shield

Butcher
Dispell scroll
Sword of might
Potion of Foolhardiness

8 Bulls

25 Gnoblars
Groinbiter

25 Gnoblars
Groinbiter

8 Trappers

Scraplauncher

Scraplauncher

2 Leadbelchers

Gorger

Gorger

Slavegiant

2500 in total.

My friend had

20 Chaos warriors
20 Marauders w/wulrik
3x5 Knights w/MoK
2x sorcerers w/MoK
6 Trolls
Throg
10 hounds
Hellcannon

Highlights were;

Fighting throgg's unit with ogres that were trollgutted, and running them down

Charging knights with a SG, take 5 wounds, jump up &down and kill them all

Getting irresistable with a butcher twice but not dying.

Taking a charge from khorne knights with my bulls, taking a lot of wounds then wiping them out

Scrappies, 1 sent a hatchet into the Rhinox's balls which ran into a bull unit
The other killed 7 Warriors, 4 with KB!
Then it shot at some knights and scattered 10" onto the centre of the marauders and killed 10!
It also helped defeat Throgg's unit in combat  :D

In the end it was a draw, I had 97 more points than him!

Scrappies were great, as were the big bull blocks.
Tyrant seemed effective, BSB was awesome and the Butcher had things in hand.
Although it was hard remembering everything (I didn't a lot of times) I'm very impressed with this Ed in the two games I've played.
I still think the game can be tactical, plus it feels like more fun.

On to the next game ASAP!

Shield was good, getting rid of a hit was nice.

I'm quite impressed with some of these 5 point MI's you can almost add on as an afterthought, most being worth 5 points at least.

I played another game last night using the same 2.5k list above, this time against Dwarves.

Came up with a loss this time, although it did seem close.

The terrain rules played quite a big part in this one, my opponent placed a big building, a couple of walls and a big hill in his deployment zone, so a unit of 12 crossbows went in the house, 10 thunderers went behind the walls, along with a large unit of longbeards W/ BSB (25)

It was all looking pretty good until my opponent had a decent round of shooting, the turn before I charged, it thinned my Ogre units down quite a bit.
Then came the money shot where he messed up my charge by making a unit charge across another by using a magic item, it meant my big unit of bulls w/tyrant going into the longbeards instead of ironbreakers, which prevented my bsb's unit from charging.
Quite a clever move.

It meant that my BSB's unit got charged by the longbeards with characters in, lost combat, fled, and the bsb died by making his last stand.

Magic was a no-go, I didn't manage to get a spell off as he had a Runelord which was steeling one of my power dice.

The Scrappies were awesome, not misfiring throughout the game and killing quite a lot of Dwarves into the bargain.
I found it best making them hang back so they didn't have to autocharge, letting them shoot for longer and charge when they wanted.
I knew they'd be good, but they are surpassing my expectations so far  :D

Another thing that was awesome was the Slavegiant, Thunderstomp gives him a massive boost that was needed and makes him very viable now.

Gorgers were textbook, taking out a stonethrower, engineer and then one helped kill a few thunderers.

Good game in all, still getting to grips with the rules but remembering a lot more now.

Onto the next game tonight!
Not sure if I should use my Ogres or test out the Woodies though.

It certainly looked a very close game FF!  That master rune of challenge was a pain for me too to other week - I was fortunate enough to fail the charge and not mess up anyone else though.

one thing: scrappies don't have to auto-charge, if they don't declare a charge they have to take a leadership test (and general's leadership and BSB re-rolls count) - if they fail the test they charge.  I've not been shy about moving them up myself.

have you tried any indirect fire with them yet?

Not tried indirect fire with them yet mate, they've always been able to see cause I don't want to waste a hit  ;)

I know they don't have to autocharge, but If they're out of the General's Ld it almost seems that way  ;)
I might try running them up with the units again next time, we'll see.

The terrain rules played quite a big part in this one, my opponent placed a big building, a couple of walls and a big hill in his deployment zone, so a unit of 12 crossbows went in the house, 10 thunderers went behind the walls, along with a large unit of longbeards W/ BSB (25)

Something I've been wondering about, with this amount of terrain, would that wallcrusher bigname be of any use?

Something I've been wondering about, with this amount of terrain, would that wallcrusher bigname be of any use?

With the added ease that we get our Bull charge these days and the amount of obsticles about I think it is worth a look in bigger games but there are so many awesome common MI's that it still isn't that great, but usable I guess.

I played my 4th game of 8th last night, this time just 2k against Skaven.
This was my first game against the Rats since their new book came out, let alone 8th Ed, but since I'm doing an army myself I know a lot of the book.

The list I used was pretty much the 2.5k one above with the Trappers, 1 Gorger and 7 Bulls left out.

He had a Grey seer, Warlock Engineer, Plague Priest with Furnace and Plague Monks, 2x 25 Clanrats, 30 Stormvermin, 9(?) Censer Bearers and an A-bomb.

I moved up quite catiously, keeping a fairly rigid battleline.
Butcher cast Trollguts, irresistable force but can't cast anything for the rest of the game
Then I forgot to fire the scrappies

In his turn he Moved up, moving the Censers from in front of the Monks to the left into a abyssal wood.
Tried to get a few spells off but nothing substantial.

My second turn he activated the Stormbanner, which ended up lasting for 6 player turns!!

I Charged the censers with Ironguts that had BSB and Butcher in, they were at an angle that if I wiped them out (which I thought I would) I could overrun behind/to the side of the big Furnace unit, swift reform and combo charge with the Bulls W/Tyrant.
I smashed through the CB's Overran nicely, but didn't manage a swift reform.

Next turn he moved the warlock in front of my Big Bull unit, threw a Brass Orb and killed 3 Ogres outright.

From here everything that could go wrong, did.

Both Gnoblars failed bicker.
Scrappies didn't hit any targets, one blew up after the crew sent the hatchet into the Rhionox's balls.

I combo charged the abom with the slavegiant, scrappy and unit of gnobs in the flank, rollled 1 for impact hits, giant rolled flail with chain which was 1 hit and Gnobbies didn't wound.

From there, if a 1 was a bad roll, I'd roll it, for hits & wounds especially.
After quite a few cracks calls and Warp lightenings my army was destroyed.
The best bit of luck I had was my BSB passing 4 cracks call's (I) tests!!
He was the last to die after a unit of 4 guts plus him went into some clannies and bounced.
He held up for a long time but finally died to the Furnace.

In all I had a good game, knew it would be a hard one from the start, but losing my Butchers ability to cast in turn 1 and then having very bad dice rolls troughout made it harder.

I don't think I would take the same list for 2k again, but saying that it seems a lot harder to write one for 2k than 2.5k or 2250, there just doesn't seem to be enough points for the bigger units of Ogres I want  :(

Yup, I2 hurts for Cracks call.
Hurts for the brass orb too.

Purple sun from Death will not be pretty either.

realy like the ogres, something i am working on is the snow on the base, i did some spacewolfs and the snow looks flat, after some searching i found that if u mix snow pva and skull white together in a 1-1-1 mix it looks more realistic. however i have not tried it yet so dont know how effectual it is, also i head you can mix a bit blue ink in with it for ice. hope this helps
Hey J&B, glad you like.
Cheers for the pointer on snow, I wouldn't change the basing method on this army though as it's over 3 years old and time for me to redux it when the new book comes out.
There is another great way of making snow too, involving baking soda and PVA, looks great.

So, I played my 8th game of 8th last night, this time another one with the Ogres.
I faced Thorek and his evil gun toting crew at 2k.
Now, the last time my Ogres met up with Thorek was in the last game of the  2007 UKGT, I was on 3 wins with my Ogres and needed the win to secure my place in the final, needless to say, it didn't happen and I have had a grudge against Thorek and his bumboy since then.
(Actually there might be a quick rep somewhere in this thread)

Did I settle the score with the Beared metal bashing bore?
Hell yeh!  :D

I ended up winning with a 'Crushing Victory'
Not much to tell really apart from that.
Thorek never miss-hit the anvil once, so didn't need his special friend, I got Gorgers in combat with him for two turns which saved my ass a bit.
With the new charging rules it's excellent as it 'only' slows the Ogres' charge down by 3" compared to 6" in 7th so the ogres can still charge a possible 15"  :D
Scrappies did well in the first 2 turns, ripping up a couple of warrior units and Thunderers to make then easier to smash through.

I subbed my Wyrdstone necklace out for Giantbreaker in a blantant copy of Wildcard's Build and I have to say it's excellent, not just for the attacks but it works on Bull charge and Stomp which is great value and most welcome.

For any interest, here was my list;

Tyrant
Cathayan Longsword
Greyback Pelt
Glittering Scales
Giantbreaker

Butcher
Potion of Foolhardiness
Sword of Might

BSB
Sword of Strife
Charmed Shield

7 Bulls
Bellower

Where is your giant? You need a giant to use giantbreaker.
*Facepalm*

That's what you get for making lists entirely out of your head and not looking at army books
Took the Giant out to scale back to 2k.
*Mental note taken*

So it's been a while since any activity happened in this log...and for good reason.
I sold this army a while back, now there's new stuff coming out the guy who I sold it to has asked for some commissions.
I usually say no to commissions, even to friends, but as this was painted by me and I know the colours and technique I figured I was best placed to help and it'd be nice to see the army come along even more ......plus the extra cash wouldn't go amiss (I not doing it totally from the goodness of my heart   ;) )

Look out for updates, and also updates from my own new army which is here Fantasyfreak's Ogres MKII

So the first commissions are 4 Mournfang Cav and Golgfag.

Here is a finsihed Mounfang Mount, it needs obviously needs the base finishing, the rider on top and finishing off with varnishes.
Hope the client likes!

Looks great FF! But I think you may have missed some studs on the left side of the saddle blanket...
Cheers Clav  :)
Not sure if I'll go back and paint them up as studs or not, I might just pretend they're clip together buttons  :D

It looks great.
Maybe it's just me, but the brown fur looks extra plasticy for some reason. Almost like it came out of the mold prepainted that brown.

Look very nice, I especially like the brown and red combo. Only thing I would say is maybe not make all the horn and tusks the same colour as it looks like it's from the same creature. So maybe you could add another highlight or a diffrent colour on other projects so the horn on the saddle dosen't look like the fangs.
Hard to crit the work but even you can get better :D !

Thanks guys  :)

I think I get what you're saying, it looks a bit samey could possibly do with a little bit more of a break up and roughly done.
I might try to do that with my own.

It's a good point.
I may try a slightly different colour on my own 'fangs, but I'm so used to doing horns that colour, it'll be something different I guess.
I think I'll do mine slightly different anyway, painting 8 all the same is a little too much for my brain to cope with  :D

I'm sure the recipie is in here somewhere, these are my old Ogres that have been sold on now but I'm doing commissions for the guy who bought them so have been thinking about the colours, as I recollect it is;

Codex Grey + Black  50:50  left in the recesses
Codex Grey
Codex Grey + Kommando Khaki in various blends
Finishing with an extreme hightlight of Kommando Khaki

Nice ogre and I love your mournfang. What colors did you use for the mourfang? I'll really like to paint one like yours. Thanks
Here's the Mournfang and Golgfag I finished for a client about a month ago.
Pics are crappy, but can't retake as they were sent to him shortly afterwards.

Next up are the Araby, Imperial and Ninja Maneaters, plus an Ironblaster.

Golgfag looks nice too, from what we can see :P

The ogres turned out well.
But I'm most impressed with the basing. You've got some serious basing chops.
