Fantasyfreak's Ogres MKII- 5/2/12 Finished Mournfang!

original thread ↗

So here I am, I spent a lot of time painting my old Ogre army (Fantasyfreak's Ogres), it was a labour of love of which I had great fun.
I played with them for 3 years consecutively, taking them to many tournies and being the only player rocking the Ogres down my club (club, huh huh huh)

With 8th coming out it was really time for a change, to be honest I'd played them for a long time and when I saw the best way to run them was what Wildcard was rocking, I didn't want to run that kind of list, and not the same as WC (we play in the same group).
That coupled with the fact that the way I tend to paint nowadays is a lot quicker than my old style, I didn't want to go back to that style of painting to make the models I needed for 8th fit in.
So it was time to sell up, with a view of doing a new Ogre army in the future.......

.......It's now that time!

And could it be a better time?
The new book is rumoured to come out later this year, I reckon I can get a few bits painted by then that won't be changed with the new book, so I'll have a good start on the new army in time to paint the new awesome stuff that will inevitably come out  :D

I've stripped a few bits that I already had and have bought a nice little bundle to get me started very cheaply with just a bit of plastic stripping involved.

I've been testing out a skin colour scheme see here
So finally have settled on this

The next thing I'm flummoxed on is the theme, I want it to be different to my old army, but not sure what to go with.
My main feeling is a pirate theme, with the army on deck basing, barrels, treasure chests, funky unit fillers, some nautical weapons etc
But what is holding me back is the new big gribblies, surely we're gonna get Rhinox riders, maybe a big beastie? would they look ok on a ship  :?
Same with Yhettees?

Couple that with the fact that I really like the Ogre Models and general theme of the army, I'm not sure I wanna change it greatly.
Maybe some swampy themed bases with water effects instead and a general theme?

Any ideas?

If I were to re-do my army, I would go for a Shrewd Fulg army (especially after seeing zzouless's), or the army of braugh slavelord.  With either you could do amazing yet simple conversions and add a lot of character to the armies.
They're both good ideas, but neither are for me I don't think.
Shrewd, I'd want him to be the model Z sculpted, and apart from that I don't think I could do with any more Skaven influenced stuff after making/painting a Skaven army for the past year and a half.

Braugh just doesn't do it for me.

Thanks for the input though dude  :)

Anyone else?
Pirate themed any good?
Normal flavour Ogres?

Pirate theme is played out. You could break into new territory;
- Pacific Islander themed ogres. The ogres went to the Southlands, and came back bearing wooden weapons, bedecked in feathers and strange warpaint. That'd also let you do alot of fire (ala the Samoan islands). You could leave the metal gutplates and iron shod boots (or paint them as wood), and just say they visited there.
- Wood Elves? The big patches of flesh would be a great place to show off some Wood Elf style swirls and whorls or warpaint, and you already have the bitz for it.
- Graveguard. Something about the flesh makes the ogre look like it belongs in a horror movie. You could give them some undead bits, and sculpt/build some VC themed weapons and armor to make them look like they worked for the undead. Ogres dressed up as graveguard would be pretty badass. And they don't even have to be undead.

I really like that Pacific Islander theme dude, it's great but I don't think I really want to stretch to the work that'd involve.
Thanks for the input dude.

I've decided I'm just gonna go for a generic theme for them in the end.
Some simple conversions here and there, unit fillers for the Gnoblars and snow basing, something that was so overdone it became unpopular, but now you don't see it and I think it really suits the Ogres.

I think I'm gonna try to play on the idea of Ogres being nomadic, recycling things they can't eat from other races (gives me a chance to empty out my super-sized bits box and have some fun  ;) )

This army is going to be fairly cheaply done.
I've managed to get hold of (from my bits box and e-bay) 8 belchers, 6 guts, 8 bulls, 2 maneaters, lmted ed bruiser, 3 yheettes, stuff to make another maneater/bsb/bruiser, 1 butcher, hunter & tusks, 60 Gnoblars and 8 trappers for just over £75, just some plastic stripping involved that has already been done.

I'm not going to be playing this army with the current book, it's a pre-emp on the new one.
I'm going with the theory that the plastics will stay the same.

I'm expecting the characters to go finecast with maybe a plastic tyrant.
Plastic yhettes, rhinoxen, big beastie, maybe scrappy kit.
So I'll be painting everything that I don't think will change (bar finecast characters) and buying the crapton of new shizzle to complete, of course I could be way off the mark, but I'll risk it.
No grouping into units will be done yet apart from the Gnoblars, who I'm pretty sure whatever happens they'll be in 40's ( max for most comp systems over here)

Mercenary ogre list, with each unit being themed and painted differently.

Not sure how well it's gonna come out, but we'll see.

I've nearly put together all the plastic Ogres I have so far, which is 8 Leadbelchers,6 Ironguts and 8 Bulls.
I'll be leaving the metal stuff I have untill I hear some concerete rumours I think, unless I get the urge to make them.

After that I guess I'll have to go back to the Skaven to finish up what I've half-painted so it's all ready for tournies.

I would be interested to see how this comes along (I really like the skin tone).

I am just about to embark on my third Ogre army; first was a pirate themed army who worshipped the giant whirlpool on the other side of the world from thw Great Maw, second was a gluttonly themed Slaaneshi Ogre army and I think i'm now going to do a Fire Mouth volcano themed army.

Thanks Vashta  :)

I like the themes of your armies.

Ok, here's an update of the Painted stuff so far......2 Leaddies ready and waiting to maybe shoot and autohit  :D

All they need is some snow basing, which I'll do in a batch when I've done more models, it'll either be pretty bright thick clumps of snow, or slushy mudded snow, we'll see.

It's funny you should say that because I did try striped pants trousers (I live in England don't you know, pants are undercrackers  ) but the effort of shading and highlighting the stripes put me off.....they didn't look right flat.

Yeah, they are nice. Personally, I don't think stripes would add that much. They would be very difficult to do in large numbers, and despite looking "flat" the trousers actually complement the rest of the model nicely.

Keep it up! :D

Yeh the red goes well with the skintone, one thing I'm quite good on is matching colours well.
The stripes looked ok, but like you said too much effort for a multitude of models, plus it made them look Empire-ish IMO, something I wanna stay clear of.

I'm thinking the Pants could do with a little bit of love in the highlighting department, they've already got a highlighting and shading process on them believe it or not, but doesn't seem to do them much good looking
 at them in the photos.
One thing I've become majorly concious of when painting armies these days is a time spent vs outcome ratio, sometimes you can spend a while doing something that is totally unessacery and not even noticable, or adding to the overall effect, I think the process does add to the effect slightly.
Not sure I wanna do much more though  :?

I think you're quite right there... I've spent almost 9 years finishing my dwarven army by painting (and repainting) every detail.  I stopped doing that, for now I'll just go for basic colours, highlights and details. If I find some time later (and there's no other army interesting me then) I can still improve all the paintwork. I prefer a rather simple but overall good looking paint job to spending a weeks on each miniature. First the whole army, then the individual models!
Nice skintones, Fantasyfreak. Looks like you use a lot of colors and layers to get this effect. I also like the gnoblar in the barrel of the cannon.

Is the upcoming release of new ogre models doing anything to change your theme of nomadic ogres, or are you going to stick with the theme?

I think they could do with another highlight, as they just looked to be basecoated and washed. Or even maybe just an edge highlight with a bright colour just to break it up abit.

A nomadic theme begs some intresting conversions such as ogres carrying tent poles and bits to make there huts, looted food and the like kind of like native american style stuff. Also the new big gribberlys fit in you could do them up as pack animals or like a scouting force finding new land for them. Ill keep a beady little eye on this might give me inspiration for my own new army!!

The skintone is the most involved process on the models, but saying that it's probably a lot quicker than my old one which didn't look as good IMO.
It's that time Vs outcome ratio I was on about earlier.

Is the upcoming release of new ogre models doing anything to change your theme of nomadic ogres, or are you going to stick with the theme?

I stick with that theme.
It'll be applied loosely anyway, but thats the idea I get from what Ogres are.
Everything can be reused, nothing is wasted.

I think they could do with another highlight, as they just looked to be basecoated and washed. Or even maybe just an edge highlight with a bright colour just to break it up abit.

The newer ones I've painted look slightly better IMO, I've took the highlighting up a notch.
I think you were right.

Forgive me if i missed it but how do you plan on basing them?

I did mention it earlier in the thread, but yes, I forgive you  ;)
It'll be rocky with snow, the classic style Ogre base......I'm thinking I could end up going for grimey looking half melting snow instead, but unsure on that one yet.

But they are so small...I'm sure you can squeeze them in somewhere. :-)

I will at some point, first it's time for some hardcore Ogre painting though to make it feel like I'm getting something done.
Little guys can wait until I'm over my year-and-a-half ordeal of painting Skaven (which I really need to finish up and post a zillion updates on  )

What colors and technique did you use?

It's pretty much layered highlighting, really thin coats on the highlighting though, so not too far from blending I guess.
Colours are Khemri Brown, washed down with everyones favourite wash, then brought all the way up to pure Bleached Bone.

I'll be testing out the new book for the first time tommorrow, not an optimised list, just what stuff I have and a mixture of units to get a good feel of whats going on  :)

I managed to get a game with the fatties tonight.

I love Ogres! I've not played a game for ages with them so the new book and playing them after so long was great  :D

I took a 'lets see what I've got and write the quickest list ever approach', just to get them on the table.

What did I learn?

4 Mournfangs with DH banner is a force to be reckoned with, it killed 19 HE Spearmen on the charge, that's with forgetting stomps and re-rolling 1's to hit!
Savage.

Panic still hurts.

(I) tests still hurt, quite a few Ogres went down to them in the form of PoS, including my Tyrant in the first turn

3 Mournfang is good but not enough, best to have the Juggernaught unit.

Normal Ogres and Ironguts go down as easy as ever.

Leadbelchers don't suck as much as I thought they might, not S&S isn't the end of the world, just flee the charge and counterpunch, better than last book by far, definetly worth further exploration.

Gnobs are still funny and possibly have a place.

Feeling pretty ill today, was supposed to get a game in today but alas illness prevents.

I played a 2400er on Monday against Vamps.
Twas the horde of doom build, lots of Ghouls, lots of GG with regen banner and Vargulfs.

I mashed him up good and it looked like a fairly big win, but losing the SM and BSB gave him a lot of points securing a draw.
Forgetting to apply the effects of the Cascading fire cloak, rolling low on the Firebelly's breath weapon and yet again forgetting Bloodgruel all attributed to that.
I will make sure the firebelly always carries potion of speed too, as if he ends up in a unit of Ogres it is paramount that his attacks go first against regenning units.

Painting-wise, I've been assembling a SM, giving him a different look which I think looks pretty cool.
Also managed to assemble 3 Yhettees, 4 Mournfangs (just the beastie) and a converted Maneater (I really dislike the Arabian one's head)
Been painting stuff for a commission, but I've nearly finished 2 Leadbelchers which will be up as soon as.

Sorry to here you're I'll :(

I never found out how you did against Alan on Monday.  It sounds like, with a little more practise with the new rules so you didn't forget stuff, that you'd have battered him.  That bodes well for the ogre/VC matchup as I seem to member it being one you struggled with in the past.

You'll get him next time! :)

I also hate the head on the Arabian maneater, it's the worst of the bunch though.  I'm looking forward to see the paint job on your slaughtermaster though.  Wyvern parts FTW!

Only 2 more to do before I finish the unit of 6 which I think will be the only unit of them I paint for now until I have a playable force and am expanding the army.

I was going for two units of 4 too, but I think the 6 is the way to go for me at the min.
Saves points, less chance of panic (which wreckes them)  and is more of a unit that can do something in combat when needed.

Still thinking I'll get some Chaos Hounds so I can make a unit to run with my Hunter though.

I've been slowly painting up stuff, trying out a different colour scheme on my Mournfang to the ones I painted for a commission, will get pics up soon.

Played a couple of games lately, one Vs Woodies a couple of weeks ago and one tonight.
Still loving Mournfang , really missed them in my list tonight but I got a nice feel of their limitations against the Woodies.
Won against Woodies.

Tonight I tried out a fair bit of stuff I didn't think I'd be using regulary;

Slavegiant
Hunter with Kitties
Maneaters
Hellheart

Slavegiant I like.
Like the model, like the fun aspect will probably run for fun.

Hunter With Kitties  :D
You know, I ran Hunters quite a bit in the old book they've definetly gotten better with the inclusion of how they work with 'tusk packs.
They're not awesome, but definetly playable and I had some success blasting out a Lv4 and causing decent damage to a unit too.
Could be quite good if used well, character assasination, lose combat flee with SS meaning they get away.
Or maybe a fast flanking force, definetly have other better options.....but they're usable  :D

Maneaters, I'm not sure, there are so many variables in their special rules and equiptment selection that I don't think anyone can comment unless they've ran every selection multiple times, which would require A LOT of games.
Mine got shot by a cannon and ran off tyhe board first turn   ItP anyone?

Hellheart?
It's random.
Do you spend those 50 points on making your SM a little more specialised, or go for this random weapon that could swing the game massively or do nothing?
Depends on what floats your boat I guess.

All in all, I think I can paint everything and have fun with mixed up lists anytime I want, nothing sucks that much.
Hell I even think I could be competative with all types of list.

The new book is awesome.
Thank you GW!

Gone for a different colour scheme than the commission ones (couldn't paint any more of them that colour  ), spent more time than I'd like on it getting it how I wanted but fairly happy with it I think.

Awesome work, the Skin of the Ogres looks beyond awesome. Any chance you give us an idea which colors you used and how you did it? (won't dare to ask for a step to step tutorial)
But it's not just the skin; the metal, all the colors (and their combination) are amazing. The beastie -just wow.
Keep up the fabulous work, I'll be watching ;-)
He did give the recipe for the colors he and technique he used for the skin, check the first page I believe.

I would also like to know what you used for the metals though FF, your work is absolutely brilliant.
Cheers guys  :D

I thought I posted a quick skin recipie, but can't find it now  :?

So a quick one for you both;

Skin
Khemri Brown
Devlan mud
Khemri Brown
Khemri + Bleached Bone 50:50
Khemri + BB 25:75
Bleached Bone

Metal
Dark Flesh
Bestial Brown stippled/striped
Boltgun Metal applied stripey and on bits that are high
Mithril highlighted
Devlan mud
Maybe Badab black if I feel like it.

Okay, so been a while since anything was done on the blog or even the army because of getting ready for Winter Icursion with my rats, plus commission painting other Ogres.

I've been doing a little on some Ironguts as they're what I'm rocking for Core mostly instead of Bulls.

I've been playing a couple of games here and there, going without IB's and I'm liking the list I've been using, not having lost with it yet either.
I think I want to find a bit of a niche list to play with instead of double IB's and a Deathstar but not sure what I'm going for or if I'll succumb to a standard sort of list.

In the end I think I'll play most different sorts of lists, that's the great thing....Ogres are my favourite army and the army is so versitile in list design that I can mix it up and change.

I've been aquiring models from various trades and now have most of the stuff I want bar some characters and stuff, also went and dropped over 100quid on some bits today

Must.. finish... painting....IG's... before... gluing.. together

I love your paintjobs and modelling. Keep up the good work. :)
Thanks Tarr  :)

So I decieded, after losing my favourite list, that I'll write all the lists I use on here (along with paint reciepes too, but that's another story)

I wanted to try out something totally different for my game tonight and use all the stuff that I think is cool but not optimal, the problem with Ogres is that I think everything is cool.

Anyway, I set about writing a list last night while I was tired.
Just before I was due to play today I decided I wanted to use my other list I've been rocking , but with some stuff subbed out for Stonehorn and Gorgers, but couldn't find it for a quick change of units, so ended up using;

Butcher LV4 (Maw)
Sword of might
Earthing Rod
Dragonbane Gem
Rock-eye

Bruiser
BSB
Heavy Armou

Butcher LV2 (Heavens)

6 Ironguts, Full commnad, SoD

6 Ironguts, Mus

10 Trappers

10 Trappers

Sabretusk

Sabretusk

Gorger

Gorger

Stonehorn

Ironblaster

Scraplauncher

It was different and quite a fun list, doubt I'll use it again (wouldn't have used it in the first place  ;) )

Stonehorn wasn't as bad as I thought he'd be.
True, he hit 4 times after failing his charge of 7 and rolled 4 1's, but it's wasn't his fault, 'tis the nature of dice.

Scraplauncher wasn't as bad either, I think it's priced appropriately and will see some use from me in non-tournament games.

Gorgers, man I love them, I think that's mostly nostalgia though.
At 90 points and in 8th they just don't do it for me.

Ironblaster is good, haven't had a bad game with it so far, even though in this particular game there wasn't many viable targets I managed to move to get a flank shot on some Dragon Princes, hit 4/5 but rolled 2 ones.

I really do like the look of these, the colours are very smooth, and whilst I do my Ogres fleshy (and always have) there's no doubting the quality on display here-Hat's off to you sir!

One thing I would like to find out, how do you do your flames on the Leadbelchers? They look a bit spesh!

The Mournfangs look the biz, and whilst I'm still deciding on a colour scheme for mine (I was thinking Timber Wolf) this may just be a scheme I have to 'Borrow'.

Keep us posted, these look like winners!
Thanks Potter  :)

Flames are really easy.

My Fav list so far;

Another list to add to the vaults;

Bruiser
Glittering Scales
AHW
Rock-eye

Bruiser
BSB

Firebelly
Dispell Scroll

9 Ironguts
FC
Standard of discipline

3 Bulls
AHW's
Bellower

10 Trappers

10 Trappers

Sabretusk

8 Maneaters
FC
4AHW's
Stubborn & Swiftsride

4 mournfang
Stnd, mus
Dragonhide
HA, IF's

6 Leadbelchers
Mus

Stonehorn

2400

Idea is simple.
Maneaters, Mournfang and Stonehorn take the frontline with the Stonehorn in the centre and steam forward to smash and eat.
Characters go in the IG's 4x3 and stay behind Stonehorn.
Leadbelchers hang around the backfield too and shoot immediate threats.

Only anti-magic is the LV1 with DS  :D

So far I've done very little painting this year, I've mostly been putting together my Stonehorn and a unit of Ironguts, had fun doing some minor conversions on the two IG command groups which I'm happy with.

My plan was to finish making up the IG and then finish painting my Mournfang, but instead I started making some wound markers (which are very much like the ones I did for my old army, but done better), a couple of markers for when a unit rolls 10-12 for Bull Charge (nothing fancy just gutplates) and a marker for when my next spell or dispel with a Gut Butcher will be at +1 (lots of food on a base)

So the plan of action now is to finish those, finish putting some extra armour on my IG which I just realised I forgot to do and then tidy up and clean my painting area which, man...really really needs doing, it's a crazy mess with sprues/bits/paints/models/marerials/crap/paint everywhere, it hasn't been sorted properly since I finished painting some Skaven for the last tourney I went to and when I rush painting for a tourney it always gets a little crazy

That's the plan of action, not necersarily in that order though knowing me.

So I've finished making the IG and totally finished the markers, which I'll throw up some pics of soon.

After a few games with the non-magic list I've decieded to scrap it for the min, it'll work sometimes, sometimes it won't, I just like what magic can give you and it makes the game more fun.

For the next few games I'll be trying out Grut's sickle and a Thundertusk, tried them both out last night and was fairly impressed with Grut's sickle, it allows for a better magic phase definetly, although the possibility of a lynch mob forming is worrying, I think it could be worth it.

This is the list I had drawn up, I think it needs a few major tweaks, I really like my Maneaters, so a list without them makes me sad, working with the Thundertusk could be very nice for them too.

Been trying lists without Ironblasters, infact I think I've only had around 5 games with them, I've no doubt of their effectiveness and value for points, but in this list I think it would benefit from one massively.

Ok, new list that I've worked out (well, slightly tweaked from my fav list), I'm gonna commit to using this for the next 5 games at least before changing anything.
It has nothing that I think is a points sink, aside from the possibilities of the Scrappy, Grut's sickle and Death Magic.
No messing with random stuff that I think is silly now for a bit.

So played a game with the latest list tonight against the new Vamps.
I'm liking it so far, it looks a lot smaller than the lists I've used just recently, but is focuses on the way I like to play- dick about a bit getting into position then be very agressive and smash the crap out of stuff, with a bit of magic and shooting to support  :D

On another note, here are those markers I promised pics of, nothing special, but they do the trick and are nice to have, especially the wound ones which save a load of dice kicking about and getting confused.

Purple based daggers are wounds, red based gut plates are Gut charge, yellow marks the +1 to cast for Bloodgruel

Been busy finishing my Mournfang over the last week, tried some new things on them like the orange rust and verdigris.
I wasn't convinced of the look of the Verdigris with rust on the one model that has it, but when finished it looks ok I think?, the idea was that the armour was looted from all over the place so that's why it's made of different materials.

Tried out some Army Painter Varnish on these too and I'm quite impressed, it's almost as good as Dullcote but without the hassle, darkened down the whole scheme and some detail is lost as a result just like Dullcote, but it's probably worth it for the anti-shine.

Tried out a new snow mix too, think it looks ok, never tried a thicker looking snow before, quite appropriate for the weather here in the UK  :D

What do you think?

Note to self: make a light box and take better pics!
Verdigris and rust shows up more IRL

Thanks for the comments guys, feedback is always really apreciated  :)

I've obviously been playing with the models I've made up and not painted yet, but not had decent movement trays up to this point though and that drives me crazy as I'm used to magnetised armies, pulling straight out the box and playing instead of ranking them up.
So for the last couple of days (apart from painting up commission Maneaters), I've been working on movement trays, pretty much one for every formation I'd want, just need to magnetise the models now and add flex-o-metal to the trays which is currently in the post.

Been thinking about changing my list up a little too, played using a Heavens slaughtermaster the other day and liked it better than LotGM, so had to drop the scrappy to get that in.
Really like the synergy of Heavens and Grut's Sickle, being able to 1 dice the lower casting value spells is great after dropping a comet or chain lightning, if it fails there's still a Fireball or something to chuck with the Firebelly.
Thinking of dropping the Maneaters out too as the unit that houses the SM and BSB as Grut's sickle is not good with them

Nah, it's photograph mounting card I believe, it's not too thick and pretty strong.
Cheap too, about £3.50 for a massive sheet (probably 4'x2')

The edges are balsa wood.

Cheers Magerk  :)

So the Flex-o-metal came today, along with 100 self-adhesive magnets.
Managed to get all the movement trays flex-o-metal'd up and magnetised a fair chunk of my models with the magnets, self adhesive ones save so much time it's unreal, but time will tell on their ability to grip to the models' bases, I'm unconvinced but they seem to be doing the trick so far.
The rest of the models that need magnetising will be done with non-adhesive ones that I have kicking about  :)

The money shot never gets old (for me anyway  ;)  )
