Does anyone have some kind of advice for playing these annoying Elves?
I play against Woodies quite often and they always kick my big Ogre butt. So some kind of advice would be great!

Depends on the kind of wood elf army you are playing.  My wood elf opponent almost always takes the forest spirt army against me when he finds out I am playing ogres.  That annoying 5+ ward save seems to save his rear end way too often.  I know that he is absolutuely terrified of my gorgers, yhetees, and leadblechers.  Those leadbelchers, even though they aren't always effective, have to be accounted for because of what they potential could do to him.  What ever shooting he has usually goes at them.  If not then I move them up to shoot and protect my flanks.  I have also used gnoblars effectively against him by combo charging with a unit of guts or bulls.  That way I get the ranks and probably outnumber.
Take a lot of butchers in my mind too.  I try for lots of buffs that make that shooting a lot harder or I try to get magic missiles off at him (take the bangstick!).  But again I do this because I play that blasted forest spirit army and magic or magic items by pass his ward save.  This is also one of the reasons I like yhetees, plus the fact that they are as good, or better, at moving through the woods than woodies.
Finally the gorgers are just great for all around chaos.  My opponent never knows how to account for them and they can tie up a unit or two for some time.

If you have more specific questions I can try to help and I am sure that many out there are far more knowledgable than I am, but I hope this helps a little.

Thanks,
JC
Why?
He usually plays with lot of archers, a unit of Wardancers, 12 dryads, two units with 3 Treekin, a treeman(or sometimes two), a wizard with two scrolls and a noble/high born with the Alter kindred.

I'd try lots of gorgers. Maybe Skrag if you don't mind special characters, and some leadbelchers.  Also maybe a Hunter and his cats to go after archers(?).  Definetely several units of ironguts with some naked bull screens.  Also try a lot of butchers, even if you take Skrag, the ability to buff your units will be great!  I'd like to say that taking out the treemen would be easy, but that will be tough.  Take out his other stuff first and then worry about them.  I know it sounds so easy and is really difficult

Thanks for the advice, I can't wait to test them! I will let you know how it goes! icon_smile

Magic missiles are big.  Reducing WE small elite skirmishers with a Bangstick or Bonecruncher is helpful (no forest spirit save either).  Most of their stuff is T3 so Bonecruncher works well.  I personally target their annoying fast cav. first and then war dancers if they have them.
Go for a unit of Yhettees as well... one of the most annoying things (I find) with Woodies, is their ability to move through forests without penalty - can cause a lot of hassles for you.  You can counter this, fire with fire style, with the Yhettees - use their tricks against them, like peeking one Yhettee around the corner of the forest, then using his LOS to charge the whole unit through the forest, into the units behind/inside them...
Hi Mini,
I played that list on Friday with a very skilled player.  I took 3 units of 4 Mournfang and a Gutstar, 3 sabres, and 2 blasters.  I lost 14-6, he didn't get the GutStar but got everything else.  At least he got all the rest of the points, my 2 Ironblasters didn't really have any targets so I was using them for impact hits on WildRiders.  The mass impact hits on the WR worked nicely, but damn they are hard to catch.  I thought this list (which is an all comers for a tournament in August) would do the trick for pinning them down since the Mournfang are pretty darn fast.  The problem is this....Mournfang charge Wild Riders they kick the WR butts.  WR get the charge and they pretty much destroy a unit of 4 Mournfang  :x

So, I am thinking about modifying the list to take at least 6 ManEaters with Braces and Flaming Banner, and a unit of 7 or 8 Leadies.  I am not sure this will work either though.  I played a similar list last month at a tournament and the combination of Shadow Magic and all the True Flight arrows still gave me fits.  About the same score in that game.  I think I am going to play test this new version a couple of times.  I'll post how I do.

If you figure something out, let us know.  Especially since the Bretts are getting a new book soon.  I think with all of the Elves around, the Royal Air Force list may make a strong comeback and that is basically the same style, but a little easier for us to deal with.

Cheers
My theory no practise at all with it is using Lore of Heavens. Comet of Casandora is counter there woods dictating our movement phase and counter there movement phase by targeting the centre of the woods. The signature ability can also be useful for clearing Great Eagle, Warhawks and even Dragons if they bring that.

Firebellies and Ruby Ring of Ruin will also be useful at chasing Fast Cavalry

Also Hagbane arrows (Poison) are looking popular so remember your slaughtermaster is immune

Just thoughts so far

Looks like dual slaughtermaster maybe a way forward
I have had several games with the new wood elves and specificly their guerilla warfare. what i recommend is skipping leadbelchers alltogether. they just wont have targets worth shooting and will never recover their points while giving easy points to them in return.

What general theorys i have tried and failed at

A lore of heavens SM with leadbelchers to buff up trying to out shoot my enemy.
what happened?. leadbelchers dont hit anything whatsoever and a smart opponent will allways dispell your to hit buff. thing is most of their army is eather fast, skirmishing, or hiding inside woods.

The standard run of the mill gutstar with support. works great. you cross the table they will  just avoid combat with it and do a points denial strategy by killing all your ironblasters and such moving out of your charge arcs.

What has come the closest to sucsess.

2500 points. No slaughtermaster just a tyrant and a firebelly firebelly had a ruby ring and a dispel scroll. Stubborn scouting maneaters with no armor and ongly 3 AHW in the front ranks. a small gutstar. A ogre squad both around 9 members. 2 gorgers 2 cats. 4 man MFC. this time i scouted before he did i marched as hard as i could across the table and then my gorgers came in from behind pinning most of his army between a milnurished monster and fat guys. but this ongly resulted in a draw.

the whole gimmik with the army i had in my ongly semi sucsess was spending no points on protection and using the tyrands ld 10. my ogre block had ahw i have had bad times using ironfists as they preatty much ignore it with their -1 penalty. and trying to get the maximum amounts of models to the field.

Now Tyrants of the stronghold. please bring up something useful for the rest of us to enjoy vs the viet cong of the WFB world.
Bring a Hunter with the Shield of Ptolos.  For extra vulgarity give him Heavy armor and the Dawn Stone.

Attach him to a saber, vanguard up, and then split the Hunter off to attack things individually.  He's virtually immune to WE shooting with a 1+ save (never mind if you make it rerollable :D), and can wreck just about any of their supporting units on his own.  Guaranteed to put a kink in any WE player's plans; just watch out for the Wild Riders.
Hunters do not have access to heavy armour.  :(

Ogre Battles!

Tactica: Sabretusks
Tactica: Gnoblars
whoops :)  Shows you how familiar I am with them :D  The only saves I rolled were vs shooting.  The WE player never managed a wound in close combat.
Some pointers from a WE player... <gulp>

I'm unsure about the 'don't bother taking leadies' argument I think it's more about selecting the right target for them and perhaps getting them in some soft cover, although WE have Trueflight Arrows the T3 bowshots usually aren't great against T4 standard armies. If the WE player drops a lot of tree's on the board from acorn of the ages this is probably better for the Leadies.

All elves die easily to Magic Missiles, I can't stress this enough. Most MM's are toughness 4 even the weaker ones are likely going to hurt also. This is the best way of deleting of those 'scary' wood elf units like Way-watchers and Wild Riders. The only downside is the reliance on a good magic phase and we all know how random those can be.

Don't be scared of any forest spirits in the woods, they don't get near half the nifty buffs the Elves get from residing inside a forest, though the wizards still get a +1 to casting. Like most units they will still benefit from any magical forest buffs mind. Treemen are still Good anvils and require some 'flaming' to help bring them down but they don't hit like a tonne of bricks anymore but can still hurt and are stubborn. All in all forest spirits are weaker than the last book and Ogres should be able to take them down with brute force.

Poison. Poison is likely going to be one of the things that could hurt Ogre's the most and is readily seen as the tool of choice for taking out your Warmachines. Be aware then that Scouts, Glade Riders (from ambush) and perhaps the Sisters will be the ones tasked with this role. So like the Leadies try and get them some cover, or plop something scary in front of them. The hardest part about playing the Woodies is that so many of their units can be dropped after deployment, which can really fluff up your plans. So think ahead and drop your heavies in such away that the WE player would have to deploy in a more vulnerable position if they wanted to target that certain unit. (I'm mostly thinking Mournfang/Guts and Waywatchers here).

Chaff up the Glass cannons, yeah I said it, find some sacrificial units to plop infront of the wildriders while they are in the open, they have frenzy so you can force the charge. Then angle for the counter attack with something you know will deal with them.

Also, not always but most commonly the WE L4 will be running about with the Sisters of the Thorn. They are a swiss army knife but also masters of nothing, they are an annoyance a distraction. Don't pay them much attention they may hurt you with magic, but their spells aren't fantastic they are not going to doom bolt you to death like DE Warlocks. I suggest Ignore them, unless you know you can get the charge on them. They will spend most of their time prancing about and generally being annoying but in reality not really doing a lot of damage overall. The magic missiles rule doesn't apply to these either their 4+ (3+ upgradable) ward save should be enough to put you off bothering.

WE infantry is generally weak but have a few tricks you should aware of, obviously ASF and re-rolls can be pain but at S3 you should be laughing most of the time. Eternal Guard die easily but they are stubborn so can be a pain to remove and can cause long combats until something else nasty arrives. Wild Wood Rangers are an interesting one as they get more attacks against everything that causes fear and are immune to psychology, this means all Ogres.... So be thats more S5 greatweapon attacks, no ASF re-rolls but re-rolls to wound if near a wood could give you a bad day. They still die easily though mind you.

Great Eagles are there for one purpose redirect... and they do it well, theres not a lot you can do about this really just take the free points. I won't comment on War-hawk riders as I don't have any experience with them personally, I Imagine they will hunt War machines well though, as well as Leadbelchers.

anyway hope some of this helps....
Hey I'm pretty new to warhammer only had a couple of games and love the ogres. But I don't know what a couple of things are like what is macro casting? And are maneaters good? Would love feedback and comments!
