Monthly Painting Challenge - December 2014

Are you ready for GUTMAS?! Got a special mini in the works for a friend or loved one? Or are you just gifting yourself with painted minis before the new year begins? It all comes down to this...


Just joining in? The idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or build/convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:

• All Pledges will be frozen after the 10th day of the month. There is no changing of *any* pledge after day 10. Pledges are still accepted after the 10th of the month, but they can not be changed once they are made.
• If you finish your pledge, and you would like to really impress the rest of the Stronghold, you can then go on to add a Bonus pledge. Any additions to your pledge made before the 10th go onto your initial pledge and will not count as a Bonus pledge.
• We need to know The number of Models when you post your pledge. 3, 8, 10, or even 100. Saying "A unit" is not acceptable.
• Extra incentive: I will be awarding to those who complete their pledge. I'll also be awarding an extra to the one pledgee who posts the best photos of their pledge throughout the month!

*Please* post the progression of your work (pictures if at all possible). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the Butchers Cauldron or your Gnoblog.

FAQ
Q: So I can Only do Ogre Kingdoms or GW Minis, for my pledge?
A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like, however this is the Ogre Stronghold, and we are naturally more excited to see Ogre models. If you're working on one of your other Armies or projects, and/or any other Models, please feel free to make a Pledge.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!
A: well.. You have until the 10th day of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There may be small prizes awarded for photographic evidence, but you really only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q: What if I finish my pledge but decide to do more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's not as big of an accomplishment  to make a pledge with 75% of the project painted at the start of the month...  That's not to say that sometimes the last 25% of the project your working on is not more than worth being a pledge of its own..

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?
A. You bet! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

OK,  count me in. Nothing exciting but my goal is to finish basing my goblin army.  That will leave only a handful of models before that army is done and I can focus on the fat lads a bit more.

  So... base about 250 night goblins.

Aiming to finish my ogre army this month( at least the bought models) so 3 maneaters, hunter, 2 sabre tusks, bsb, stonehorn. Gotta get going early before Xmas hits

I'll offer up a Bruiser BSB for this months pledge due to time constraints.

Anything else I get time for I will add as a bonus pledge later.

Two Firebellies for me this month!

I start off my Ogre Army with a rather modest pledge (christmas preparations, work and studies take a lot of time). Only four Leadbelchers. A package from GB will arrive in a few days with all the paint and brushes I need to start working on the models which I already have. (Also getting a batallion).

Hopefully this month will be a good month for Ogres, though time will tell, lol.

My pledge for December:

Paint:

4 Leadbelchers
*Bonus* - extra 2 Leadbelchers

4 Ironguts
*Bonus* - convert & paint 2 more

I am going to pledge 5 Ironguts (finishing up the models I have assembled). And to make simple movement trays for my Ogres.

So, I received my colors and started working on my models. First time trying out layering and rusting. I am content with the results.

@th ~ Great job with those skin tones. Looks good.

This month I pledge 1 Gorger. It's about time my opponent stops putting those darn organ guns in the very corner of the map!

I vow 1 firebelly, finish my two saber tusks from last month, a look out gnoblar for the ironguts, and three gnoblars for my scrap launcher.  Pics will come later.

  So... base about 250 night goblins.

  What was I thinking...  So. Many. Models....   This taking forever.

I'm going overseas in just over a week... so I'll make the modest pledge of 4 Leadbelchers. Hopefully that should be achievable...

I have a ton of time off from work this month, so hopefully I can complete this.  I'd like to get all the above models done so I can move on to bigger things next month.

I'm having to amend my pledge for this month (see edited pledge above) after my wife and I had our first ogreling on Wednesday! I'm realising how little spare time I am going to have this month to paint!

I think I should finish up the Thunderlord I got.. like, half a year ago?   
Yeeeah, this is kind of embarrassing. I'll get it done now!

I shall make a pledge, bearing in mind this is the first lot of Mini's I've painted in 15 years...

Going to get the following completed this month:

4 Leadbelchers
2 Mournfang
6 Bulls
5 Ironguts
1 Firebelly

And if I get time, the remaining bits from the batallion box to make up some specials.

I'm going Frost Ogres, I love the ones I've seen, and I have loads of blue paint left over

2 down, 2 to go... Flying to Japan on Tuesday morning so we'll see how I go trying to fit painting around packing and early christmas stuff over the weekend .

Managed to get a few of the frosty ones finished. Would have been 4 leadbelchers but I put the wrong gut plate on the last body so yes going to be a bsb now...

Gorger complete! I found this model quite hard to paint.

I will add a bonus goal of at least starting to paint my stonehorn.

So I actually finished my Leadbelchers much quicker than I thought I would.





And I will, as a bonus pledge, add 4 Ironguts. Painted the metal and first skin tone so far.

Finished a few more and made a start on the Firebelly as well!

We have completed (without basing) 4 Leadbelchers, 6 Ogres, 5 Ironguts, 2 Mournefang and should have the Firebelly don this week as well.

I might add a bonus Ironblaster, or make a start on my Maneaters once the bely is out the way...

Stretch goal of Stonehorn...complete!

If I were to do it again I would have put the Thundertusk shields on his shoulders. The weird reptilian/dragon/??? shoulder guards dont look as good in my opinion. Also, I now know why people paint some of these parts before glueing them together - particularly the head and saddle. Those got in the way at some points.

Additional stretch goal: Beast Rider, Hunter, and an Ogre (trying to get a 1000 point list put together by the weekend ~ wish me luck!)

Flocked- just autumn leaves to add. I'm about half way through the army at this stage.

I've been slacking hard core.  I got destiny and have been playing non-stop for about  2 weeks now.  I'll have some pictures up for my challenge in a few days.  I don't know if I'll get the two characters done though.  Oh well.

An Ogre, a Hunter, and a Beast rider. On top of that I painted a butcher and one Wood Elf glade guard.

So, yeah. Did not manage to finish my Iron Guts all the way. Bases will have to wait until next year.

Last day everyone!! Time to get something painted before the new year begins!!

It's already 2015 here and I didn't quite finish. I've got about 70 goblins to go plus hoppers, fanatics and spider riders. I managed to complete 260 other infantry, trolls, snots,  bolt throwers, warmachines, and giant. By actual base area I probably got about 70-80% done. I'll put up some sample photos soon.

 EDIT- Here you are. Flocked and leaf'd. Imagine doing that to 300+ figures.

Still quite the accomplishment there!!

I've missed the deadline this time. Only about an hours work left but never mind. There's always January's challenge to make amends!

I did get my two firebellies completed and will get pictures up soon!

Some great stuff here. I blew it this time. I have to admit, I'm still dispirited because I can't find any WHFB games, which has really sapped my enthusiasm a bit and I've taken some time off to focus my game time on X-Wing. I like to see the work continuing here! I'm surfing around the Ogre Stronghold trying to get inspired.

I know it's halfway through January but I'm making progress on December's challenge!

 

 These are my spider-riders bases. With these done I just have to base the pumpwagons, paint a squig-gobba and build and paint an arachnarok and I'm DONE with the army.
