Need help for my first army list - 1500 pts (min 50 % core)

original thread ↗

Hi

Im having a friendly game agains Dark Elves.
The terms are 1500 pts and min 50 % should be core troops only painted models.

Im used to playing Dwarfs and this is my first Ogre game.

After reading this magnificent forum A LOT, I have come to the conclusion must haves are Guts, Maneaters and MC, but I'm not really sure how to proportionate this in a 1500 pts game.

Could anyone please give me some suggestions of how to put together an army.

Thx guys

Im thinking something in the line of this.

1 Slautermaster lvl 3 - Lore of the Great Maw (General)
8 Ironguts (Bellower, Std Bearer, Gnoblar, Banner of Swiftness)

1 Butcher
6 Ogres (Bellower, Std Bearer)

3 Leadbelchers
3 Mournfang Cavalry (Crusher, Std Bearer, Heavy Armour)
2x1 Sabretusk
3 Ogres
3 Ogres

Please comment  :D

The 50% minimum for core is really hard to get my head around. Will try to find some way to make it work when I get home. Will post a possible build then.

Why do you guys have the 50% core rule?
Sounds great Evoluo

The 50 % core is only in the first game.
Afterwards we will add 500 pts for the next game as reinforcements, but we need to continue with the original 1500 pts. and then 500 pts more for a final game of 2500 pts.

It was just a little campaign we thought up.

I'll make a gnoblog to keep you updated on how it goes.

Lords

SM, lvl 3, Fencers, Glittering, dragonbane gem

Heroes

Bruiser, BSB, HA, IF, Talisman of endurance.

Core

9x IG, full command, Banner of disc, Look out gnob

7x Ogres, full command, look out gnob

10x Gnoblars, champion, trapper upgrade

Special

1x Sabretusk

3x MFC, Muso, Standard of Swiftness

Okay I designed something keeping in mind that you can only add with the upcoming games. (Can you switch magic items and such, if so I might have some tweaks)

Because of the 750 (!) points you need to get into core I made it so that you won't have to put a single extra point in them after the first game. This will be more than enough core to last you to 2500 pts.

You will have a hard time because the DE core choices are pretty nasty. And ours are okay, but we need the points for characters and our wonderfull Special choices.

Let me know what you think and good luck m8.

Looks interesting

A few questions though.

The DE player tends to bring multiple small units which will undoubdetly force me to set up first. How would  you go about setting up the gobblers.

As for tactic should I have the Guts go for his Black guards and let the MFC go for the Dreadspears. Pref. in the side or rear.

Also with so few units would you suggest hugging to one of the corners instead of spreading across the full deployment zone.

Thanks for all the help.

The gnoblars are there to go in to a watch tower if needs be or to protect a flank from a charge.

The guts go in to the toughest unit  if they can, the MFC will have to mulch through all the T3 models as fast as they can. Keep them in range of your bsb for turn one and try to get Toothcracker of trollguts off on them, or the shooting will be a pain.

Setting up is mostly up to terrain, if there is some cover for the MFC when they advance, take that side to deploy. You can always switch out the swiftness banner for gleaming pennant, but hopefully you are in combat bij turn 2 and in turn one you can still be in the bsb/general reroll range.

The problem you have is that our core choices have no shooting, its just straight up run and smash face. So with 50% core I would almost go for a gutstar (but I really don't like that playstyle).

He can be rocking darkshards, witchelves and dark riders in his core. And these will be a big problem, not to mention what he can do besides those hard core choices.

Take a look at this topic to get a pretty good feel what to expect. http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=28726.0

So our Dark Elves friend can max out on Witch Elves I guess....

Get a firebelly and go extreme.  Add core, a stonehorn and some leadbelchers and charge.  :D

I have done some calculation and come up with the following:

Lords - 315 pts
Heroes - 168 pts
Core - 437 pts + 240 pts + 55 pts = 732 pts
Special -  215 pts + 21 pts = 236 pts
Total = 1451

Is my calculation off or do I have 49 pts to spend?

Might have something to do with the name perhaps?  :)

Here's a link to the battle anyway if interested:

Sorry m8, your calcs are off. It is exactly 1500 points on the nose.

Lords - 315 pts
Heroes - 168 pts
Core - 437 pts + 259 pts + 55 pts = 751 pts
Special -  245 pts + 21 pts = 266 pts
Total = 1500

Jimmy strategy is fun to, love the firebelly!
Got it now, I was lacking the IF and HA. Thx m8

Firebelly is a must for you, Leadbelchers too.  Agree with Jimmy, you are going to be seeing LOTS of witch elves and that won't be fun to hit with our core unless you whittle it down.  A nice fireball or two along with 3d6 shots should do the trick nicely.

I can't really see what to remove in order to get a Firebelly other than the MFC and that seems to me to be a bad exchange.

Switch the SM for the Firebelly. And use the extra points for some nice special choices.
Evoluo that sounds like a good plan.  SM is a bit point heavy for such a low point game IMHO.
