2500 Orges vs New Wood Elves

original thread ↗

Hey Guys,
I've got a match up this weekend against the new wood elves. Don't know his list, or much about new wood elf apart from....well there elves. So I was thinking of using my all corners list with a few tweak's.

Here goes, any advice will help.

Slaughtermaster 360
LV 4 Great Maw, Fencers Blades, Glittering Scales, Sceptre of Stability

Bruiser 183
BSB, Crown of Command, Dragonhelm, Heavy Armour, Ironfist
Firebelly 170
Ruby Ring, Dispel Scroll

9 Ironguts 437
Full Command, Standard of Discipline, Look-out
3 Ogres 106
Champion, Ironfist
3 Ogres 106
Champion, Ironfist

6 Maneaters 406
Champion, Standard, Flame Banner,
5 Brace of Pistols
1 great Weapon ( for the champ )
Poison, Swiftstride

4 Mournfang Cav 350
Dragonhide, Bellower, Standard, Heavy Armour, Ironfists

Sabretusk 21
Sabretusk 21

Ironblaster 170
Ironblaster 170

Idea is to use bunker with all heroes and lord, 2 units of ogre darts for blocking and chaff with sabres. Maneaters to help with fast cav and Trees. Mournfang will probably get shot off the board with arrows that hurt armour...
At first glance I can't see anything wrong with that list at all. I have yet to play the new woodies as the game I was going to have got called off, so sadly don't have any direct experience of the new book.

The list looks pretty solid though, I am sure others can offer more practical advice than me though.

You will not have enough and or good targets for 2 Ironblasters...
Try 1 scraplauncher. Swap it for 1 Ironblaster. It has better changes against T3 units, that are lined up.

Played against Woodelves the other day... It is hard to pin them. They jump from wood to wood with entire units. The 1 ironblaster did almost nothing. At that moment I thought that the scrap launcher would have hurt more.

That reminds me to add 1 loss to my play records...."-(
And 2 wins against Skaven & Tomb Kings.

I have found most woodies take small units, including as bunkers for their characters. A 2d6 fireball can bring a unit below 5 rank and file.. then the cannons blast the characters. Small scouting units of expensive elves are easy points with fireball.. but not sure about the ruby ring.

If you aren't going to take the hellheart I really like the forbidden rod on the maw caster with armor of destiny.

You also might want the lookout gnoblar on the BSB instead of the unit in case the characters jump ship.
What's your normal list out of interest?

What everyone else has said is bang on.  Even if he sports 3 Treemen, a single Ironblaster is more than sufficient and even that's probably overkill.

Firebelly - you really need this guy for the fireball to drop skirmishers as they'll do your head in especially when/if they get around behind you.

With your low unit count chances are you'll get out deployed and won't have the +1 addition to the go first dice roll so act accordingly that is don't deploy your Sabretusks right on the 12" line if that means they'll get slotted first turn.  I like to deploy the MFC on a flank against Wood Elves that way it limits where his Waywatchers can go to bring down their no armour save shooting attacks from.

If you have time I've got two battles against the new wood elves in my battle reports which can be found here and hopefully be of use.
