Your Nasty Tyrant

original thread ↗

Alright lads! Let me start by saying that I always run a tyrant when possible. Is it competitive...no. Do i really hate magic, yes. I do this because I love combat lords, dislike magic phases and really love the fluff.

So without further delay!

Let me see your favourite tyrant setup! What do you equip him with? is he super offensive and killy? or tanky? Perhaps both!?!

I have always loved the combination of Greedy fist, GiantBreaker and fencers!
strength 7 in intiative order with 6 attacks at WS 10, while also being wizards nightmares

I am also going to try out this build next tim around
GiantBreaker, Sword of anti-heroes, iron fist, gut maw.
This fella would be terrifying to fight against in a challenge ( literally..terror), only problem is super defence lords and ones with HKB of course. Worse comes to worse, they deny challenge and have to sit back while you munch on the front rank

SO lets here it!!!

Lots of good builds here --> http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=e4b75e6d27bf8754eb7537fad545f5d9&topic=25636.0

As for the Gut Maw Tyrant, I recommend:  Great Weapon, Gut Maw, Other Trickster's Shard, Giantbreaker.  It's important to go last to make full use of the Gut Maw, and with the intent to get into challenges, you may as well take Giantbreaker.  Str 8 with the OTS means the vast majority of wounds you deal will not be saved - thus maximizing your healing.

My favorite build is probably EG Giant-Tripper's:  Heavy Armor, Giantbreaker, Sword of Striking, Other Trickster's Shard, Greedy Fist, Enchanted Shield.  That guy is scary.  Hits most things on 2's, wounds most things on 2's, strips away wizard levels, forces rerolls of wards, and basically makes a major impact on any combat.  Everything a tyrant should do.

My favorite build is also the one listed above, hitting on 2's, wounding on 2's makes for a very reliable CR generator.  Whenever I use a Tyrant I use this build and it never lets me down.  I think he has only died once in a challenge when my opponent rolled very well and barely killed him.
Giantbreaker, glittering scales , fencers blades ,other tricksters. How would that work?
Solid enough to do the work, though little in the way of protection once the hits go through
My old stand by is the trickster's helm, HA IF, Tal of Endurance and Sword of Might, S6 with a 3+ 5++ forcing to wound re-rolls, more of a tank than a berserker
Game's the same, just got more fierce.

I've been running a variant of this, with 4+ ward instead of greedy fist+enchanted shield.  I always include a unit champion to deflect unwanted challenges (usually other champions) while the big guy racks up his 4-6 kills on the rank&file.  Ogres taking up as much room in a unit as they do, he usually has to absorb a ton of S4 or 5 hits from the peons, and gets whittled down by the end of the game if I run without a solid ward.

Greedy fist is neat, but unless its a daemon of some sort he kills the wizards before they have a chance to lament their lost levels.  Of course I've never made the 6+ against a magic weapon, so that's not a selling point for me yet.

Next, I'm going to try Gut Maw, Mawseeker, Other Tricksters, and a great weapon.
By the middle I grasp firmly
My great halberd that I have loved so long.
I lay it across my shoulder;
with leisurely step stride forward.
Be he demon or hobgoblin, how
shall he stand against me?
Such trust I have in my own prowess.
Oh, how I long
For a foeman worthy of my hand!

I could be joining the tyrant camp soon, getting a bit over the fickle ways of magic to be honest!!  :). I think with 5 wounds and our toughness we can afford to skimp on the protection just a little for more offensive power and give him a clear direction - rank and file killer (combat res generator) or a character killer like the few challenge combos above?  As all ready mentioned we've really got to be aware of the HKB attacks floating around (thankfully only a few) and a few enemy combat builds but outside of that I think it can be a very solid choice and of course the leadership!  :)

Oooo I'm liking snarks build, that does sound quite juicy!

My build is:

Giantbreaker (that's +1S, right?), 4++ armor, ahw, 2++ flaming or OTS.

Decent combat beast who can handle most stuff. He goes into a unit with my BSB rocking a 4++ and gw. The S6 and S7 can break stuff and the front of T5 and 4++ absorbs damage. I normally run them in an ogre unit - leaves my ironguts to roll out other things. Not weak at all : ) I can even squeeze a SM into my list : )

Mind posting what items you use to get this combination?

Id guess. Giantbreaker, Armor of Destiny, The Other Tricksters Shard, Dragonbane Gem, AHW.

Thanks : )

The Other Tricksters Shard is a double edged sword though, if the BSB goes with the tyrant then they may easily be in b2b if the units go 3 or 4 wide. Potion of toughness is also a nice tool to have.

Last Tyrant build I played:

Mawseeker, tricksters helm, dragonbane gem. HA. ironfist. luckstone.

T 6, reroll successful wounds, 2++ against flaming, 3+ with a single reroll. I don't give him a ward because when he is in combat, I generally want to give him regen anyways. Last time, he went up against something that had str 6. I got toothcracker on him. So all their to-wound rolls where 5+ with rerolls.

But big downside with this build is that no OTS. I miss when mawseeker was only 10 points :(

Poison too would make him a sad panda : )

This may be my meta, but I see a lot more AP and OTS then I see poison. Plus it's fun when someone lands str 5/6 attacks, and he has to have a 5+ reroll to wound. It's very shocking...
My favourite build is this (it's probably in the other thread, I haven't changed it much!)

- HA, IF
- Sword of striking
- Dragonhelm
- Greedy Fist
- Other Trickster's Shard

He's light on defence (counting on some magic to buff his toughness/give him regen) but he lays some serious smackdown in a very reliable way.

Anyone smart enough to run the mathammer on this build vs a Deamon Prince in a challenge?  Also would a 4++ be better than a T6?
What deamon prince? A DoC or WoC - they are very different with the WoC being the better choice I think.

The WoC standard:
1+ As, S6, 5A T5, W4, WS8-9

Spice up with -1 tohit for nurgle and the potential +1T and +1W lore attribute.

So this prince will hit on 3+ (unless sword of striking is applied) for a 2+ to hit. and wound on 4+ (with rerolls):

5 [attacks] *2/3 [to hit] *1/2 [to wound]^2 = 5/6 or 0,83 wounds/round with sword of striking that would increase to 1,04 wounds - however I have not included the 6+ AS.

If the T6 and reroll wounds were replaced by a 4++ the numbers would be:
1,11 wounds normally and 1,38 wounds with sword of striking.

The tyrant would then continue to hit on 4+ (5+ nurgle) and wound on 4+... before the daemon would get the 3+ as and 5++...
... 0,27 wounds/round... however with a gw the outcome is 0,93 wounds... against a non-nurgle prince

In the end the match up is not good without magic support! Bring out the cannons!
