I was just wondering what the best set up for a Tyrant is to maximise either attack or defense?
Im just wanting to see if there are any combinations that i havent thought of that are bada**

Tyrant Sword of striking Giantbreaker Other tricksters shard 4+ ward pendant Enchanted shield Heavy armor
Well rounded combat monster.
Great weapons make Great weapons. NEVER YIELD!

Nice.
I Like: Sword of Swift Slaying Giant Breaker Greedyfist Dragonhelm Heavy Armour Ironfist
Very offensive build, he always seems to do the job for me!
I would be dead right now were it not for the heroics of Skywalker!

Sword of striking Enchanted shield (+HA) Greedy fist Other trickster's Shard
Cheap and cheerful, leaving enough points at 2500 for a slaughtermaster.

- Giantbreaker - Armour of Silvered Steel - Dawnstone - Potion of Foolhardiness - GW
Str 8, with a 2+ re-rollable armour save :-)
Ogre Achievements: 13/101 ...Well there's the Skaven in me :-P

I've been using fencer's blades, glittering scales and greedy fist! Six strength six attacks and your opponent needs sixs to hit him most of the time.
Really? Is this really what we are talking about?
MaanNaam03 Oct 2012
I like running mine with Fencer's blades, Glittering scales and 4+ ward. makes him damn hard to hit and then he still has a 4+ ward for any annoying shots that does hit him.
There is only news. There is no good or bad.
kobahl03 Oct 2012
One I like to play with every now and then is: Sword of anti-heroes, Giant breaker and Talis of Preservation.
Against R&F's he's would have 5A at S6 and if you start throwing characters in there is just gets better and better. Nice for those units that like to go character hvy.

My favourite Tyrant ever was the glittering scales + Greyback pelt combo . That thing carrying a CLS and IF was pretty scary.

SoAH is pretty sweet. I like to give it to a Slaughtermaster though, as he benefits more from the additional strength. I find with a Tyrant a cheap sword of striking is enough.
I tried the SoAH once at a tournament and I found it typically gave him +1A and +1S for most combats where it mattered as there was at least one enemy hero around. However in the last game I went up against someone with an etherial heavy build with 5 wraiths at the front of a unit set up (twice) with multiple units of etherials. Man did the SoAH ruin his day! That would be 9 S9 attacks thanks.

best set up I have found for tourneys is on the shelf...take a SM instead... =)
seriously tho, depends what you are using him for.
killy or a tank?
Crown of command, hvy armour, 4++ talisman, ench shield and OTS. 3+/4++. stubborn and reroll their passed ward saves is quite nice. you want him for the ld and blocking S3 attacks on T4 unit and not for the killy as point for point our core will be more effective. Its about what 4 IG or 5 bulls for the same points as a tyrant.
Gutlord Inquisitor05 Oct 2012

Instead? As well! I run the build I posted above along with a SM, typically with dragon bane and dispel scroll.
Lalabox06 Oct 2012
I've recently been having some fun with heavy armour, giantbreaker ,sword of bloodshed, enchanted shield, drangonbane gem and potion of speed.
He's probably a bit too focused on killing, and doesn't have enough to protect himself (only a 3+ armour save, and a 2+ ward against flaming), but when I get to cast trollguts on him and his unit, he tends to stick around.

Wellll... I Like: HA, Talisman of 4+ Ward, Sword of Swift Slaying, Giantbreaker, Enchanted Shield
I just used this in a 1600 point game and my tyrant ate them up!
psychichobo08 Oct 2012
Been tempted for the Fencer Blade/Glittering Scale combo, but the sword of striking is just so good in its own right it's hard to deviate from it. Throw in Giantbreaker and I'm pretty much set, adding the odd defensive tools and maybe a Rock Eye/Ironcurse Icon.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?

This. You want killing power? Take anything else and you're better off. Unless of course, they field 5x4 units of core and no hordes/deathstars. Then you've got it easy (can I come to your tournies?).
Shadowlord08 Oct 2012
You want killing power?
That is not why I take the Tyrant in most of my battles, moar Ironguts is better in that regard.
There are other perks, and while expensive, it comes down to the amount of pts you play.
My hood is my castle...
grey templar08 Oct 2012
The only way I'd consider a Tyrant competitivly would be at 3000 points, and then I might just take a couple Firebellys instead.
Current win streak: 10
Things Fluffy,my Stonehorn, has flattened: Ancient Stegadon, Unit of 5 Chariots with Tomb king, Chaos Lord, Herald of Khorne on Jugger, x58 Forever steadfast (\__/) (='.'=) (")_(") This is Bunny________ This is bunny after a Thunderstomp

Trickster's helm, mawseeker, heavy armour and ironfist can be quite fun. Giantbreaker, Greedy Fist, sword of striking, Heavy armour, and a enchanted shield.
GodHead10 Oct 2012
Arabyan Carpet; 4+ ward; charmed shield; heavy armour; and great weapon.
Works for Doombulls, works for Tyrants.
Just have to let go of that Leadership. Which can be a stupid thing to do, at times.
Aegamaeous11 Oct 2012
I'm looking at a Tyrant with: Arabyan Carpet, HA, BoP, Fencer's Blades, Dragonhelm. Expensive but fun.

Double Firebelly lists respectfully disagree.
The one I'm the most fond of is as follows:
Tyrant, Glittering Scales, Ironfist, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Talisman of Preservation
The theme here being that this guy sits in front of an IG unit and doesn't allow your opponent to generate any positive CR as you lay into him, and even contributes some offense of his own (both setups can be expected to contribute 6 S6 attacks in most relevant combats, which is no joke).

Bingo! I use this combo on my Tyrant most of the time but there are two things I will add to this, and that is that I also add a champion and another character with a 4+ Wardsave to the front. They soak up a lot of wounds from hard hitting units that would have been dead Ironguts and CR for the opponent. Wound denial is not to be sniffed at, especially if you have a sucky Maw session.
I also like to use other banners than discipline on my guts.

I put that exact setup on my Slaughtermaster (usually Maw or Beasts because I don't like Deathfisting unless it's a serious or competetive game) who kills butt loads when he's about, on a Tyrant I can only imagine the killing power!
I do the same thing with my Ironguts, people assume (wrongly most of the time) you have the SoD on your IG's, it's funny when they realize it's the DHB or something else just as horrible! My regular WE player expected SoD once so he charged his Treekin into my Ig's thinking he could get off Flesh to Stone... he was wrong on both counts, I dispelled Flesh to Stone and I had the flaming banner

Sorry to raise a dead thread, but I have recently started to play large games (7,000pts), so have fielded a few Tyrants, So far the following build is the one that does the most.
Tyrant, Great Weapon, Brawlerguts, Armour of Destiny, and a Healing Potion. He hits like a ton of bricks, as it isn't a magic item it can't be stopped by certain magic items/runes/daemonic gifts/etc. He has a 4+ ward save, and when he drinks the potion he will be getting D6 wounds back, so can quite easily be back to peak performance.
He has killed a few Vampire Lords, which I've read are meant to be better than our Tyrants in combat.
The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.
rothgar1311 Dec 2012
Did they have Quickblood, Red Fury, and a beefy magic weapon? I find it highly unlikely that such a Tyrant would hold against the canonical combat blender Vampire Lord.

Aye, he was a nasty bugger alright. He had me down to 1 wound on his turn, I returned the favour, then in my turn I drank my potion and returned to full wounds, and weathered the storm. The Vampire was then turned to a red paste. I did pass a lot of my 4+ Ward Saves.
I am thinking of dropping the armour down to a Talisman of Preservation, which still grants a 4+ ward, and with the points saved change Brawlerguts to Deathcheater. Now that is going to be a hard Tyrant to shift.
The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.
rothgar1311 Dec 2012
Agreed, though I'm a bit surprised that the Vampire Lord didn't have The Other Trickster's Shard (unless he did and you just rolled gangbusters on your saves, which happens every so often). This is the build I see the most:
Vampire Lord, Barded Nightmare, Dragonhelm, Heavy Armor, Quickblood, Red Fury, Shield, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Talisman of Preservation, The Other Trickster's Shard
This guy is frankly terrifying. I've seen him behead Tyrants in one round, and 1+/4++ is a formidable save combo.

Sounds a bit like the one Frum Gut Breaker ran into, apart from the Barded Nightmare and The Other Trickster's Shard. He was in a massive block of 50 Grave Guard with Great Weapons... they learnt the hard way how nasty 20 Leadbelchers are Hur hur hur BOOM!

I've seen similar setups on Ghoul Kings which is hideously nasty in CC especially with that damn hatred of theirs. Blends almost everything into paste including my Stonehorn and a Horde of Bulls in one games worth of combat
rothgar1312 Dec 2012
The Barded Nightmare and OTS are what make the difference in my mind. Having a 1+ save makes him a tough nut to crack, and making foes re-roll their Ward saves really makes a difference when trying to slay a Lord-level character.
Ah, Grave Guard. I used to like them, then I saw what Scream lists, Regen lists, and Cav Star lists were capable of. Suffice to say, my opponent doesn't use them much anymore, especially since the last couple of times I got Wyssan's Wildform off on my 206 Gor Horde and pounded them into dust in one round of combat.

Phazael12 Dec 2012
Fred Whitney's Doombull build, the DE unkillable Lord of Infinate Cockblocking, and a couple GD setups are the only things I have ever seen go toe to toe with that blender lord build Roth is describing. Fortunately, most VC players are not the sharpest knives in the drawer and taking their crutch away throws them off of their game, and there are ways for Ogre players to pull it off, just not with conventional take all comers builds.

OTS would seem like a gamble since it would force you to reroll your own Ward saves...
Adasi13 Dec 2012
OTS doesn't require you to reroll your own sucessful ward saves as you're not in B2B with yorself...unless you mean other wards in your own unit?
(whihc is the reason i dont use it with my Pheonix Guard!)

having reread this topic last night, i dressed up my Tyrant with Fencers/Glittering RObes/Greedy Fist and liked the result! If it wasn't for several Throne of Vines empowered Flesh to Stones, he's have ground them up!
Didn't miss the offensive maic output but sorely missed the defensive power

My favorite thing to do is Sword of bloodshed, giant breaker, HA, Enchanted shield, Dragonbane gem, and rock eye. Stick him with a unit of ironguts that has the dragon hide banner and he's gonna dish out 8 wounds all by himself with the rerolls. The rock eye is so that you don't engage a unit and find a nasty surprise (like an assassin or a lord that is built to do nothing else but kill a tyrant). Plus, if combat goes into round 2, they will be striking last because of the banner and your tyrant will be free to target and kill any remaining characters before they can swing. Combine that with gut magic buffs and he is a train wreck and a half.
The enemy of my enemy is my double enemy.

Trickster's helm, mawseeker, heavy armour and ironfist can be quite fun.
Add Biting Blade and that is how I run mine and love the results.

What about fencer's blades tricksters helm hvy armor and dragon gem the tailsiman of protection? I am trying to find a nice build for my tyrant with out cutting apart the model
Morglumnecksnapper16 Apr 2013
A fun build is certainly
Arabyan Carpet, Greedyfist, Dragonhelm 100p And then you choose from HA, Braced Pistols 19p HA, Ironfist 10p
Just too baad you cant place him within a unit Atleast you get a 4+ lookoutsir if you stay within 3 inches
Adasi18 Apr 2013
why wouldnt you be able to place him in a unit?
The carpet is not a mount, doesn't change his base size etc...it just confers the special rule "fly" onto him...
In a closed list environment, i imagine you could pop him in a unit and then really suprise someone as you Swiftstride+10 charge him out the unit!

I usually run pretty simple we'll rounded build with talisman of preservation, sword of anti heroes, dragon helm, and other tricksters shard. He's big and bulky enough to take on most common infantry. Against stronger lords the sword and shard as well as his basic stat line usually do the trick.
If you're worried about heavily armored armies then place him in a unit of iron guts ( maybe with banner of armor piercing for big FU)
But a great majority of my games my tyrant stays alive and usually slays the enemy lords, he's beaten tomb kings, chaos lords, and with some lucky rolling another tyrant each in one round of combat.
Hope this helps
