Introduction to the Stoneswallower Tribe

A hundred years ago the Stoneswallower Tribe was known as the Boartusks due to some as yet undecided reason. They were nearly wiped out by a war with neighbouring XXXs, leaving the Boartusks broken and homeless. Ghrabgutt, a Slaughtermaster with such an obscene paunch that he had a crew of Gnoblars to hold his gut up, discovered that he could get some nutrition from eating rocks - this was a few hours after eating his Gnoblars, leaving his favourite Mr Falldownpants (named for one hilarious incident) to last. The tribe withered, their guts shrinking to humiliating skinniness, as they wandered the Howling Wastes. But their luck turned as they wandered down a crack full of the tastiest rocks, and here regained their strengths and once again began to breed, multiply and attract Gnoblars. Although they now have once again set up basic animal husbandry, crude brewery and other trappings of Ogre civilisation, they still feast on the rocks at times of festivity.

Their current Tyrant is Ghrubzhog Stoneswallower.

The Salty Rust Boyz Fluff

Perhaps a development once I've got a decent army built would be for the tasty stones to be warpstone and to do a few units of mutated Ogres.

Tales Schedule

My local gaming group is doing a "Tales of X Fantasy Gamers", with a view to paint 250 points a month over 8 months.

Month 1 February is 250 points of Core. Several colleagues seem to be building core and heroes, but given points I'll be sticking to core. My plan is 6 Ogres with Ironfists and Full Command plus 10 Gnoblars. If I get that done in reasonable time then I may cheese it up, paint Ironfists for my Standard Bearer and Musician and turn it into two units of three Ogres with a second unit of 10 Gnoblars - MSU cheese!

Tales Month 1

6 Ogres, with Ironfists, Full Command - Kalkhaz Rust Boy, with Shantyshouter (Bellower), Mastbearer (Standard) and 3 Deckhands
10 Gnoblars, no Command

I have tacked the arms on with blutack so I can prime them, then disassemble them so I can paint in all the nooks. I have tried to paint larger models fully built before and I can never get accurate enough brushwork to reach in these places. I will be following this guide for painting the Ogres. The flash on the camera has shown some flash that I missed on the Gnoblars so that'll be cleaned up tonight.

Liking the backstory and lore, looking forward to seeing these guys come together. The idea of being in one of these escalation leagues or just having monthly painting goals with a group really interests me, would be very motivational to get things done and have it pay off by having garentted games. Plus your more inclined to do great work because you know everyones going to want to show off their new 250 points!

Cheers, and welcome to the thunder dome...I mean.. Gnoblog community!

Thank you, I did an Eldar one last year, and although that fell apart after a few months, I painted more in those few months that I did in the first four years collecting Eldar. It also gives me an easier time learning the rules with smaller games.

Yeah, the "Tale of X gamers"-things are great for getting some painting done, as long as it continues. I find that being able to share your work and discuss about it keeps the interest going :)

Unfortunately all the ones I've taken part in have lost interest in a couple of months  :P

You seem to be challenging me for the title of Smiley Overlord with all your smileys
6 Bulls with Full Command...

And a minimum unit of Gnoblars...

Things I learnt...
1) Typhus Corrosion takes longer to dry than normal paints, similar to but not quite as long as Stirland Mud,
2) Lighter colours need more 'drying' before dry-brushing than darker ones,
3) The Ogres were big enough for me to paint before gluing to the base, allowing me greater manipulation and allowing me to get into the nooks,
4) The Gnoblars are fiddly blighters to paint compared to the Ogres.

I really enjoyed painting the Ogres (but not the Gnoblars), this is the first time I've used the new GW technical paints and went a little overboard with the rust and verdigris effects - but this lead me to create some new fluff.

Salty Rust Boyz Fluff...

Whilst not the most populous of the lesser tribes who fight under the Stoneswallower banner, the Salty Rust Boyz are amongst the most infamous - particularly in the west, where they are better known than their parent tribe.

Founded by Captain Shogghung Backshank, or as he known then Slim Shogg, the Salty Rust Boyz were a menace to the high seas for a decade - before an unusual alliance of Marienburg and Cathayan trade fleets brought an end to their raiding.

Slim Shogg was a laughing stock in his tribe, the Stout Brew Dogs, unable to gain any weight and unable to hold his Stout Brew the tribe were famous for making. In a desperate attempt to gain status he dared to court the Tyrant ‘unmarriable’ daughter Grimhold Sourcheeks. Grimhold wasn’t unattractive, by Ogre standards, but she was demanding and ruthless - determined to bear a horde of Ogrelings and start her own tribe she had devoured several previous unsuitable suitors. Shogghung realised the danger his plan posed, but saw no other way to further himself, a member of the ruling family surely must be fed enough for even his skinny frame to gain weight - and if he failed and was devoured, rather a dead Ogre than a skinny one.

To his surprise Tyrant Rhekhurl Wetbeard Brew Dog, so called for his damp face caused by constant drunken spillage, accepted Shogghung’s application to be a suitor. Tyrant Rhekhurl like all Ogres loved two things more than anything else - gluttony and violence, some Ogres lean slightly towards one than the other, and he leant more towards gluttony. Grimhold had caused several wars by her eating suitors from neighbouring tribes, and it was starting to get in the way of all the eating and drinking, so Tyrant Rhekhurl was happy to marry her off to just about anybody by this point. But Grimhold wouldn't put up with anyone that skinny, she wouldn't even need to chew, so he needed beefing up. The Tyrant gave Shogghung a unit of the weakest and stupidest Bulls he could muster and told him to seek his fortune and to return in a year, come back a Maneater or not at all - this would at least shut his daughter up for a year even if the runt Shogg failed.

Shogg didn't fail though, the Bulls all deserted him, not willing to follow such a weak leader. He eventually made his way into the crew of a small privateer fleet, captained by Gustav von Klockentree. Gustav had never worked with Ogres before so didn't know that Shogg was underweight, Shogg was still impressively huge to a human. The Captain expected Shogg to do the work of several men and this he did. He held his own whilst fighting and consumed vast amounts of food and rum until he was a respectable size.

A year later, he returned to Tyrant Rhekhurl and the Stout Brew Dogs, a mighty fat blob of an Ogre who drunk all under the table, bar the Tyrant himself (although a more shrewd Shogg held back so as not to lose his head). Grimhold was more than happy to marry the man before her, especially when he showed her the loot he’d made, but she clouted him round the head with club for ‘making her wait’, but really it was to show him she was in charge. They were married, and soon Grimhold fell heavily pregnant with a brood of Ogrelings. Shogg, now called Sealegs Shogg, was given another unit of Ogres as his retinue - this time a group of fine Ironguts. Shogg and his crew then went raiding again for the term of Grimhold’s pregnancy and rejoined Gustav’s crew.

However the other Ogres rarely pulled their weight on the ships, only really getting motivated in battle, they were raised as wealthy and well-fed warriors and had no drive for menial tasks. They complained about the poor quality food, and the choice of rum over beer. The Captain was displeased, and the Ironguts noticed, they convinced Shogg that he should be Captain and a great mutiny was had across all five ships in the Captains fleet. The Ogres won convincingly and had a great feast of man-flesh, using the rum to pickle what they didn't eat. Their first raid was a Dwarf brewery, adding stunty meat to their pickling barrels and some proper beer to their hold. However, only Shogg knew how to maintain the ships and eventually they began to rot and the battle-damage and general wear ’n’ tear began to show. Shogg turned their sails homeward, and they beached the ships several hundred miles south of the Stout Brew Dogs territory.

Grimhold heard of their landing, gathering her hand-maidens about her, she lugged her pregnant bulk south to the camp. Here she gave birth to a massive brood and the Sealegs tribe, still under Tyrant Rhekhurl’s rule, was born.

Shogg grew restless on land, and Grimhold was pregnant again (and she’d developed a taste for the pickled manflesh). So he took to the seas once more, signing up with privateer and pirate Captains, mutinying and stealing their ships. This earned him the name Backshank, he never actually stabbed any Captain in the back he preferred to bite their limbs off and watch them try to swim, but his reputation for treachery grew. Captain Shogghung Backshank was no fool though, he crewed his ships with Gnoblars for the work and Ogres for the fighting. Many small tribes and Maneater’s joined his crew or flocked to his village built around the shipwrecks of Gustav’s fleet. Meanwhile the Stout Brew Dog’s waned, Tyrant Rhekhurl and many Bruisers and Butchers were lost in battle, and the remnants fled to join the Sealegs. Soon there were hundreds of Ogres at Shipwreck Village, and Captain Shogghung commanded several dozen ships at his height. His pirates became known at the Salty Rust Boyz, as their poorly maintained gutplates and weapons rusted quickly in the salty sea air, soon the entire tribe was known by this name rather than as the Sealegs - although Grimhold liked neither.

The fleet returned to Shipwreck Village, full of booty and pickled flesh, where it was ambushed by a Marienburg fleet, supported by pre-deployed Empire troops on land. A Cathayan fleet then came down the rivers, providing fire support to the Empire troops. The Ogre ships were sunk, Shipwreck Village was pulverised, but Shogghung and his crew were not so easily put down. They slaughtered the Empire troops and massive lines of Leadbelchers, armed with rusted cannons ripped from a hundred looted ships, destroyed the Cathayan river fleet. They fled inland to escape the Marienburg cannons, eventually they found their way to the Valley of Tasty Rocks.

The Stoneswallower Hunters reported the mass of Ogres entering Stoneswallower territory, describing the wounded and the Gnoblar baggage-trains, Tyrant Ashkhalz Scorchtongue Stoneswallower himself lead out a welcoming committee, looking forward to the kinflesh he would soon taste. But when he saw the sheer quantity of cannons and potential of the fighting force before him, his bloodlust overtook his hunger. He welcomed Shogghung to Stoneswallower territory, offered them protection, if only Shogghung knelt before him. Still the shrewd calculator, Shogghung did kneel, but Grimhold struck Tyrant Ashkhalz with her rolling pin. The Stoneswallower Tyrant bellowed in anger and cried ‘You don’t look like a pirate!’ before gouging out one of Shogghung’s eyes and biting off a leg. Satisfied, he allowed Shogghung’s Butchers to clean and stitch the wounds, welcoming the Salty Rust Boyz into Stoneswallower territory. The Bulls and Leadbelchers quickly found work amongst the hunting and raiding parties, whilst Shogghung himself left soon after to become a Maneater, returning only occasionally to bring back pickled manflesh for Grimhold and tribute for Ashkhalz.

A few generations passed and the Salty Rust Boyz are now a more settled part of the Stoneswallowers, a few years ago they returned to Old Shipwreck Village and dragged many of the more complete wrecks to create a new Shipwreck Village on the southern cliffs overlooking the valley, there several small rivers collide and pour down the cliffs. Young Bulls soak their weapons in the streams, hoping they’ll get a good coat of rust before they join up for raids or hunts. Grimhold is the only survivor of the original refugees, to stubborn to die, she rules Shipwreck Village from the Foe Castle, a combination of dorm and cannon decks pulled from a Marienburg ship that floundered on rocks and was boarded during the early stages of the siege of Old Shipwreck Village. The Foe Castle doubles as a southern watch-tower for the valley, offering an unparalleled view and still bristling with dozens of rusted cannons with a quartet of Ironblasters on the top deck.

Tales Month 1 Quick Battle Report

Met up for the first battle of Tales. Not quite sure how many people are taking part, maybe around eleven, but there were four of us in attendance for the fight. It was 'King of the Hill' and we were free-for-all rather than being 2v2, the winner being the player with a unit on the central hill at the end of turn 6 and as we were all 250 points each we could bring any completely destroyed units back on at the start of our next turn.

I had my 6 Bulls with Ironfists and Full Command plus minimum Gnoblars.
Dean was the opponent to my left, he had a unit of Bloodletters and Beast of Nurgle.
Russ was the opponent opposite me on the table, he had a unit of Empire Halberdiers with a detachment of crossbowmen and a non-caster Hero with a pistol and biting blade.
David was to my right, he had a unit of skeletons and a Heirophant(?) with the march spell, a ward save spell and the Ruby Ring of Ruin (Level 3 Bound Fireball).
I think all the other players had if not Full Command then at least Champion/Banner.

I slowly made my way up to the hill, sometimes marching sometimes just moving and aiming to get there around turn four - thinking this way I'd be able to fight anyone on there without being too much of a target. I had my Gnoblars go for the hilltop as that amused me. I also expected that people might try to fight each other rather than go for the hill so if I held back but aimed for the hill I stood a good chance.

The Bloodletters really suffered from two bad rolls on the Chaos Daemon table, rolling the Slannesh result and losing quite a few Daemons each time. The Bloodletters made their way towards the Empire troops, the manlings being the only non-Fear causing troops on the table whilst the Beast of Nurgle reached the hill quite early but charged the Tomb Kings.

The Tomb Kings managed to cause one (maybe more) casualties on the Empire with the Ruby Ring, but miscast on another spell and lost a caster level. Then the Beast of Nurgle crashed into their ranks, between his high tough and regen, and the Tomb Kings ranks/FC and regen they stayed locked in combat until the Beast finally prevailed in turn six, too late for it to be a contender.

The Chaos Daemon table rolled another of the god-specific powers just after my Gnoblars took the hill, a stone-thrower-style template took out three Gnobbies and they paniced and I lost the hill.

The Empire charged the remaining Bloodletters, wiping them out. I side-stepped my Ogres three inches and I'd taken the hill again, the Empire then charged me. They inflicted a grand total of one wound (having caused one more previously with the crossbows), the Ogres struck back and broke the Empire.

But this was turn six, the Beast of Nurgle had just wiped out the Tomb Kings but had no chance of claiming the hill himself, the Empire was fleeing and I held the objective - but would bloodlust overtake my Bulls and would they charge down the hill. With a leadership of 7, it's fifty-fifty that they'd give up victory for the chance of more manflesh.

I passed the roll, the game was mine and as well as any points in the overall 'campaign' I won a free reroll for the next game. This is probably one of the few times a more defensive game plan would work for Ogres :)

This was my first game of Fantasy, one of the other players was new as well and the remaining two opponents gave us the time to work things out whilst keeping the game at a good pace. I really enjoyed the game, both the miscasts and the Daemon table created a really random atmosphere.

Month 2

4 Leadbelchers and a converted Butcher + Ironfist

With regard to the points cost, I am dropping the Gnoblars from Month 2's game bring me in at 497 points. As you can probably tell from the picture the Butcher is just a normal Ogre body with a green-stuff apron - I've also taken the cleaver bitz from the Ogre box and stuck it on a sword-handle for a more Butchery hand weapon as well as shaved two side prongs off an Ironfist to make it look more like a meathook.
Stoneswallower Tribe Gnoblog
Left everything to the last minute and barely finished with an hour to go. My butcher looks as gribbly as I wanted him to, but not sure if it works. Oh well, I'll finish my 2k then I can return to anything.

Leadies

Note in this formation the Gnoblar on base 3 is peering a little to close to the powder barrel on base 2, and ut-oh he's carrying a flaming torch - this could end badly :)

Quick Month 2 Battle Report

I had min Gnoblar Trapper, 5 Bulls + Banner and Ironfists, a Butcher + Ironfist and 4 Leadies.

It was 3 v 3 this time. I pushed for this once suggested as the Tomb King player had the Casket of Souls and it sounded nasty, and this way I could be safe from it. Unfortunately we didn't really deploy properly, rather each player took two foot each and deployed there - I ended up facing WoC. I had Empire at the far end of the table and Tomb Kings beside me. Woc had Goblins next to him then Beastmen further down the table.

I didn't like this set-up very much as with everything happening at once I couldn't really follow the battle further down the table - so other than saying Beastmen look cool and the Casket absolutely melts faces I can't go into details about what went down in their thirds.

First lesson I learnt - use my Gnoblar screen better. Thinking only about line of sight I used them to protect my Leadies from return fire. Not only did my opponent not have any missile weapons, but I ended up giving him soft cover. The first time I fired my Leadies I got seventeen shots, (I think averages should be fourteen) - and I missed with the lot :(

So he had a block of around twenty Marauders (I think - naked Viking dudes) with flails and around twelve/fourteen Warriors (full plate, sword and board dudes) plus a scary close combat Hero.

My Gnoblars did their job admirably - dangerous terrain caused a few wounds on the Warriors and thrown weapons caused at least one wound on the Marauders. The Warriors charged into the Gnoblars.

Second lesson - using terrain and Overrun. As mentioned due to the way we set-up I was on two foot of board, there was also a hill in the middle. I made the mistake of allowing myself to be funnelled in by this. I also forgot about Overrun with all the new rules in my head. So the Warriors made their way through the Gnoblars quite happily, then overran into my Bulls - d'oh. Better positioning with off-setting the Gnoblars could have avoided this and let me get the charge.

So I did the heroic thing and flank charged with my Leadies, rolled a ten on the dice and managed to get two Leadies in base combat. Four impact hits between them. The chaos Hero challenged (I think he has to but my Butcher had no chance anyway). We moved them up onto the hill for cinematic effect. They managed to get one wound on my Butcher who did none in return. I lost combat by one :( Failed both leaderships, and my Bulls got run down. I did manage to reduce the WoC to around three dudes left versus four bulls, a Butcher and three Leadies - but with no ranks to speak of on either side it was total wounds that did it.

My Leadies ran towards the middle portion of the board, rallyed and flank charged a massive Goblin blob. Along with Tomb King spearmen we slaughtered the Goblins. I can't remember whether the Casket or TK Archers finished the remaining Warriors whilst the Marauders hid behind the hill from the Casket's effect.

As for the rest of the battle - crazy Goblin stuff did crazy Goblin stuff, the TKs sat still firing their Casket and waiting for the Goblins, the Beastmen suffered badly from the Casket but still managed to inflict quite a few casualties to the Empire.

If I hadn't failed my Bull's leadership I would have taken down the remaining Warriors next turn easily. I don't know about the Hero though - but there was still the Marauders to come. With the artificial deployment and the hill I should have sat back, Gnoblars in front of my Bulls rather than my Leadies, and pounded them, until they reached the bottleneck of the hill. Reading elsewhere on the Forum it seems that good tactics against WoC is avoid melee and pound them with Leadies/Iron Blasters.

We won the game, I feel I did better than expected against the Warriors even if I did get almost wiped out.

But my true lesson I took from this is - the Casket of Souls is stupid powerful.

Month 3 - Mournfang Cavalry

As there seems to be a few blocks of infantry appearing in the game (Empire Halberdiers, Goblins, TK Spearmen and Archers, and I think the Beastmen have some) I thought I'd go Mournfang to chew them up. They might not perform so well against the Warriors of Chaos, nor the Daemons of Chaos army unless I can get a flank charge. Not sure whether to go 2 lots of 2 for super manouverability or 4 in 1 for supreme carnage. I think I'll try 2 by 2 first and see how I get on.

Working on the Mournfang themselves this weekend, next weekend the riders.

Built and primed...
