Conogre's Ogre Army!

original thread ↗

This will be my first gnoblog which will pertain to my ogre painting projects. I take pride in my army and hope others will take interest and watch my already made and upcoming youtube videos. I will post pictures of previous works and make sure to post works in progress.

Oh and please, just call me Connor.

DECEMBER 2013 WINNER OF GNOBLOG OF THE MONTH

*** I do encourage people to please read through the entire gnoblog. Don't just skip to last page. Lots of good conversation with other members and some other gems to be found.

Here are some guys, horrible lighting unfortunately. These were taken awhile ago. Most were unfinished but I will make sure to take some nice shots of the finished products!

Going to finish up the latest touches on my Hunter mounted on the Stonehorn.

All i need to do it touch up the fur on his boots and highlight the fur on his shoulders

Fur in order of paint

- Black undercoat
- Mournfang over entire surface
- Watered down badab black wash ( or equivalent)
- Highlight with any light brown , I use Balor brown and mournfang brown 1/1
- Highlight VERY lightly with balor brown
- Sometimes i will go over the tips of certain areas with a cream colour at the very end, In this case I did not

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
So how do people feel about gnoblars? Should they be painted like orcs , or more of that grey colour like gw. Let me hear your thoughts, and feel free to post pictures

Almost done my hunter, posting soon!

Excellent job so far!
in my opinion Gnoblars look better green....
I'm looking forward to seeing that hunter.  8)

Btw, Can I please have a link to one of your videos coz I can't find you on youtube.

I totally agree Kiwiraka, the green makes them stand out a bit more. Perhaps that what some players don't want tho. Being that I use a pretty bright skin tone for my ogres I find that highlighting with the snot green, or some other type of lime green really makes them pop out.

Heres a globlar I have done, pretty sure I haven't posted it yet.

As for my youtube,  heres the link to my homepage. http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613  I only have 2 videos so far, and they were shot on an iPhone so.. "yuck" Im going to do an ogre painting tutorial soon on my blog (here) and once i secure a camera I'm going to do separate videos on how to paint things like ( verdigris, rust, fur, metal, skin tone, leather, gnoblars, bases)

As shoddily made as the videos are, hope you enjoy. Or perhaps go look at my Python enclosure video from back in high school hahaha they seem to get pretty good traffic.

As always, Cheers!

The green definitely stands out better.
The hunter looks great, I can't wait to see more of your awesome painting skills!  :D
Nice work Conogre as per usual.  Really enjoying watching your army come together.

Thanks again Kiwi, and thank you as well Jimmy. Hopefully I get some more pics up soon! My next picture segment will probably be a step by step on painting an irongut. I figure that will be a good way to showcase some painting techniques while covering the ogre basics ( flesh and metal)

As for upcoming projects... Hopefully you guys can give input, and new readers as well - I was thinking of making a man-eater squad. BUT I feel as though the GW man-eaters (although gorgeous) will throw off the vibe I'm going for, which is a dirty tribe in the mountains, lots of leather and fur with a focus on beasts and hunters.

What I'm proposing is getting a box of regular ogres, but only to use there bodies. Then buy lots of bits on ebay from the thundertusk/stonehorn box. Aka all the spears, and javelins, vulture, crossbows ect ect. And basically make a man-eater squad of hunters, which i think would look really cool, without breaking the theme.

All input welcome

Cheers!

I think thats a good idea, just make sure they don't look too much alike as that would ruin the idea of a motley crew of mercenaries.
Keep up the good work and the great ideas.  ;)
Just realized I have yet to post my Bruiser conversion on the Gnoblog! This can also be scene in the BIG conversion thread and the december pledge!!
This was parts used from an irongut, bull, iron blaster, stonehorn, perhaps more, i forget :P
I think He turned out great! If i ever equip with an enchanted shield he will certainly look the part

Where have I seen that before? *Thoughtful face...
On the maneaters I ended up making my own with the Ogre bodies, green stuff and various weapons around the different kits available.  If I had another go however I'd make some adjustments to their legs to make them a little taller than the average Ogre however, all in all they turned out well:

Nicely done on the Maneaters Jim! That whole army is so full of life, makes me wonder if i made a mistake going for the more traditional look. Hopefully once I crack out the greenstuff and add start adding fur it will make it more themed like yours.

Those mohawks are a really great touch, I will do some lookin into to grab some bits to start my man-eaters after christmas probably.

Again, great stuff! and congrats on your gnoblog, it has great traffic, and I enjoyed the battle reports

Thanks for the kind words mate, I really appreciate them.

I've no doubt however no matter which way you turn to do your Man eaters they'll look exceptional alongside the rest of your army so nothing to worry about there!

I look forward to checking them out in due time and of course whatever master pieces you crank out before then.

Howdy All! So after some thought on my ogre armies style, I have found what I'm going use as my tribe symbol. It represents the emphasis on the beasts in my army and the link with nature! Without further delay!...... the symbol!

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Also, Hopefully I should be able to get another iron gut and some gnoblars done sometime this week. Exams and work have me really crammed for time. If i don't get anything up by the 16th it will be awhile as I'm leaving with some family to go set the trap lines before the snow gets too deep. As that is a pretty important part of my life I will probably give some updates on that now and again as well. Trapping and hunting have always been a pretty big part of life here, so hopefully there aren't too many PETA members on Stronghold to give me trouble :P

Thats all for now!

Cheers

I like the symbol, I'm pretty sure I've seen it somewhere else though...
You must have very steady free hand to be able to pull that one off!

I cheat, I draw it out first with a micro pen. Pick them up at arts supplies store , they come in different sizes, i use the smallest one I could find. In my case a Sakura micron pen 0.2mm . Its like drawing with a needle. Then i just follow the lines and fill it in. They are hidden gems

An Irongut coming along. I tried using a different colour for the leather to see how it would come out, not impressed. I used just snakebite/balor brown this time around. Its too bright, and the washes make a nice dirty look, but its a little over the top in my opinion. Going to go over all the leather bits in my usual rhinos hide and highlight with mourn fang brown.

- I was also so absent minded I realized to late that I didn't sand down the mold lines on his back enough... the picture make it look a lot worse than it is.
Regardless, everything else went fine, so after i get all the highlighting and leather done he should be looking aces.

I also used a slightly different method of skin this time.
I base coated, then but on my dwarf flesh, then highlighted the skin with the regular mixes, working my way up to elf flesh.
Normally i would wash once in-between with gryphon sepia or ogryn flesh, or a mix.
This time I only washed at the end, then did a VERY VERY light dry brush with elf flesh with some bleached bone

Results.. Not bad, I will still be going back to my regular method. It looks almost identical but I like the process more an i feel that the creases get better transition.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Oh and I'm also not using any bronze on the fella above, REASON... Well I'm really exited about those new paints that GW made

AKA the 6 speciality paints, among them, Typhus corrosion and the ryza rust dry brushing paint, and of course the new blood ( which I'm the most pumped about)

Im going to wait to do all the weathering effects until i pick those up sometime this week hopefully, they make a really really nice rusted effect.

Im not going to be doing the rusting effect thats displayed in the demo video, he goes a little over the top in my opinion, i just was crevices and bolts rusted up.

Check out the video

Okay so today while writing an absolutely wonderful greek civilization exam it dawned on me. I have a ton of ogre bits. i have arms, heads, fist weapons, clubs, even the bits necessary to make 3 iron guts. The only thing I'm low on is the ribs that hang on the belts that I'm so fond of adding. But what do i have none of? BODIES! naturally once you build all your stuff your out of guys to build because they only give you enough to make the allotted amount..

Well on ebay they sell 6 ogre bodies, that come with the metal boot bottoms.
6 for 22 USD. For me in Ottawa, Canada the shipping is 11.25. That still is way under what I would be paying at my GW. Which is 48 CAD  AKA around 45 USD

so okay not huge saving, but take that 12 bucks and use for more guys and it adds up quick.
The only downside is that you don't get more replenishing bits, which is always nice.
- where this really shines is when you have iron gut bits, Thats a big saving considering its the same cost but only 4.

What also struck my mind is the standard bearer arm. As you all know it goes on the left arm. What i was thinking, considering you rally amass these quickly, was making spears!
how awesome would 6 guys looks holding super long pikes, all in unison, you could create a sort of pole arm by green stuffing swords and other bits to the top, maybe make some leather straps to secure it with greenstuff. I think it would look the aces.

Cheers, time to go study theoretical physics. God have mercy on my soul

Had to post this as well, it just looks so damn good, with some light dry rushing with scab red or any other redish brown to look like dried blood. This stuff is gonna look amazing on ogre weapons

Im running into a personal dilemma, I know that more ogres or iron guts are basically needed to make my army more rounded. Which would be nice considering I would like a solid army when i finally unleash their fury in my FIRST warhammer game. However, a unit i can't get my mind off of is the giant. I have heard mixed things, mostly that he is not a good choice, and he usually never works. Seriously though, look at that model. Its gorgeous, and has tons of amazing bits that i may be able to use on future bsb project. Hmmmmmm choices choices.

perhaps the correct answer is buy both?

Going to be uploading a picture progression of iron gut start to finish soon. Sorry for the halt on production, University is a cruel bitch. To make it worse, It was -35C today. I love the cold....but I could use a little sunshine lmao.

Until next time.

You've answered your own question.  Buy models because they look awesome and appeal to you, then find a way to get them into your list.  Not the other way around.  They're the first few rules of garage hammer!  :)

Too true, would have an army of Mournfang if I could :) just love those models...

Was thinking of getting Creatures of the Chaos Wastes box set - one for the Battlescroll rules and also 'cos it has a Giant in it :)

I say go for it, if they had an ogre package that came with a giant that would be awesome. It might be coming though, apparently they are fazing out battalions and using those now

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Really would be awesome - will probably still get the box set as my other Fantasy Army is going to be Daemons of Chaos and it should fit the theme :)

Would never turn down a box set for Ogres that had a Giant in it though ;)

Definitely! Im think that when the next starter set some out with 9th I'm gonna pick one up. I want to start a new army as well and those 2 army battle boxes are a nice way to start.

i would get the blood island one, but ill take my chances on waiting for the next one.

I am with you on the giant thing, I love them. the model is just so cool and pretty versatile. I currently have 5 of them and a chaos siege giant, friends keep telling me they are no use unless I intend to play games of 6000pts + and even then they are not much use, but getting them in a game is not the point, they are just great to paint and look the bomb.
Get loads and proxy them..they are just cool. Size problem? Well, cut off his legs and put him on a wheelie trolly now he is ogre hight!

*anyway, you can field a unit of 5 giants in a scenario in the Tamurkhan...so yah boo sucks to my giant hating friends*

5!? thats amazing, I have actually heard of a list that fields 2, and you use then as flankers. Apparently its a solid list, if anyone coming across this knows of it, feel free to post.

The 5 giants in Tamurkhan are not part of a list (just for clarity's sake) there is a scenario in Tamurkhan that allows one player to have 5 giants and the other to have a WoC army that has to "round them up". It is an amusing game to play for an evening, but more over it is a great excuse to buy 5 Giants!

The article is excellent...but then I am already a Giant convert...

Taking step by step pics of iron gut production. Should have some starting images up in an hour or so

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Here is the very start of an Ironguts life. After a black primer I use Ratskin flesh, which I believe was called dwarf flesh last year, could be wrong.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Note how watered down I make the paint. Thats the absolute most essential painting ANYTHING non metallic IMHO. It creates smooth texture, and a beautiful end result. It only requires time :)

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
After about 3 more coats It should start looking like this, You can see that it obviously needs some more layers, as some black is still showing through! But at this stage I let it dry a little, and move onto the metal. Which I will post in.... probably 15 minutes :)  :tyrant:

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Here I am doing everything that will be metal, even if it will later be done in bronze.
I use a 1/1 mix of warplock Bronze and LeadBelcher (bolt gun metal) which I believe makes the absolute best colour for metal. Its that nice shine of iron, but the realistic darkness it tends to have. As with the skin, not really being careful, its all about coverage and even coats at this stage

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
I quickly throw on some Rhinox Hide on all leather pieces, excluding the wraps on the weapon. So just boots and Belt. I don't like bright leather, leather thats being worn day in day out would be dark and stained, let alone this is called rhinos hide...They would probably be using rhinos leather! Anyways I really like the brown that comes out, Later we will highlight with a tiny bit of 1/1 Rhinox hide and mourn fang brown to lift it up a little after the washes.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
While the Leather is drying I slap on a coat of Macragge Blue, Its a very nice blue, not too dark, not too bright. Its good for the blue pants look. And its easy to highlight, not to mention it really sets well with asumarel blue wash if you want to use it.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
This step is quick but takes awhile to dry, Put a really fat dose of gryphon sepia or equivalent onto skin, I have also used devlan mud, and ogryn flesh, or a mix of any of those. They all give a pretty similar effect in the end. After highlighting I don't see much of a difference so use what you have., I go heavy on cracks, try to stay away from areas that would have light hit them. But pretty much everything gets at least a little of it. Remember, if you see clumpy areas after it ttys, were some was more thick than others, on areas that you didn't want it. DONT PANIC :) were going to start highlighting with ratskin and Kislev flesh mixtures, working our way up to pure kislev. Kislev flesh used to be Elf flesh I believe.

Heres the wash effect, not dried yet. While it dries... Sons of Anarchy and a beer

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Heres a picture of the effect the layering of Kislev mixed with ratskin does. You start with a 4:1 ratskin, and increase layer by layer. The layers get smaller as you increase kislev.

Its not pretty yet, but you can see the layers starting to form

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Here is the skin with final highlights, Now he needs to be washed again with a VERY VERY watered down Gryphon Sepia, then if needed dry brushed very lightly on top areas with Kislev flesh.

Beard is just rhinos with a little bit of mourn fang brown blended in, highlighted with straight MF brown

Teeth are just bleached bone.

That being said, I still need to go over the face and pick up sharp highlights on nose with more kislev flesh

Its late now so I'm packing it in, Tomorrow I will be doing the pants, leather, weapon, and metal. The skin is what takes the most time though so i tend to get it down first and work around it, I find it more satisfying.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Going to start working on the Irongut soon (1hr), hopefully finish up the entire model so I can pain up a globular and do a small Tutorial on that.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
And before I go into any more detail, I find that photos don't really do my models justice. I have always been a firm believer in what I call Table Top Quality. In my opinion models should be viewed from the distance they are going to be played with. 2-4 feet. Which means that my highlights are quite exaggerated and often looks sloppy, but step back and the model takes on a very real feel due to the contrasts. Where as subtle shadows would be blown out and hard to see from farther away

Just some food for thought

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Here is the skin after a very watered down ogryn flesh wash. 4:1 water - ogryn. this just helps warm up the model and blend the transitions a bit more. I also put a wash of badab black on all the metal and did highlight with a bright metallic like rune fang steel

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
I take waterer blue I used (macragge) and start mixing white, then dry brush with the mixture and edge highlight the top of the pants. I do this until i feel its bright enough then wash with a 2:1 mixture of water - asumeral blue wash

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
For the stone of the club, I used adaptus battle grey. Followed by Codex grey from the original line, which is a little brighter. Then I dry brush with Rakarth flesh, AKA deneb stone

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Some quick shots of finished painting ( minus gnoblar and base). the only thing needed now is the weathering stage. This is adding verdigris to any bronze, and rust to any metal. HOWEVER I am leaving it hear because I want to make separate tutorials on those once I pick up the new technical paints I posted before. Ryza rust, typhus corrosion, and the oxide . However another easy way is too water down a turquoise colour. And i mean seriously water down, then paint over areas you think its would accumulate, like bolts and inner edges. Rust is the same thing but use an orange-red mixed with a brown, bestial brown works nice. Or use weathering powders, Rust pigment is amazing when mixed with a little vodka, paint on and let dry.

Anywho, when I pick up those paints Ill make sure to do the weathering.

Sorry that the pictures are getting grainy, the sun sets at 4pm so its tough to get decent lighting for photos.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
It Just occurred to me that anyone on the notify list for this gnoblog, if any, would be getting absolutely spammed with the close proximity of my posts. Hopefully this isn't to annoying, I have issues with picture sizes so I need to post separately for the most part.

- if its an issue, let me know, I can switch up my strategy.

Cheers All

Just got back from work, while I was picking up a gift I ordered for my gf I noticed a store that sold gw stuff. Needless to say I got some great stuff to show off. Expect some pics soon :)

And No, it's not models. But it's some great hobby stuff I have been dying to try!

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Without further adieu!

I present my purchase of the day! The new technical paints from GW which i have been crazy exited about.
If anyone can disagree that this line of patins was practically hand made for ogres...then I'm the pope.

This wil enable me to do side by side comparisons of Rust, Verdigris, and Blood. Matching them with the old school ways of doing them. Which I have used up until now as my primary weathering and blood effect, these ways were time consuming but hopefully this new line will work some magic. TIME WILL TELL!!

This is a bright day folks! A bright, rusty, bloody day

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Hoping to get out to GW today, Although I want a Giant really bad Im going to wait until after christmas for that purchase. For now Im going to pick up a box of something regular, probably bulls, or perhaps some mournfang to make it 4. Time will tell, the christmas rush may keep me away anyways

Yeah I got the ogre fever, I have no idea how long. Hopefully I can ramp up production these coming weeks on the holidays. But I'm a slow hobbiest for the most part. I'm working on the gnoblar on my old tyrants shoulder atm. Then I have to go through the lineup of old guys before I even get into assembling these new ones. I'll post a picture in a bit of my station and you can see what I mean by lineup.

I've always had the bad habit of buying before I'm done other projects. But I haven't found a warhammer that doesn't

- Connor

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Paint lineup, and a Picture of some of the new effects on my tyrant. Using the all new technical paints to do a bit of weathering. It certainly added some breath to a model that I found to be one of my worsts, considering it was my second ogre after the butcher. Completing the globular certainly helped tie things together as well

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Blood for the blood god paint is working great, it clumps up in areas you have gone over to look like congealing blood.  but remains lighter in the thin layers. Very impressed.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
So heres an idea, considering I really don't know that much about actually playing war hammer and making lists.
Hopefully one of you, my fellow ogres, can use you superior game knowledge and form a list from what I have. Below you will find a list of my units from which you can pick. You don't have to pick everything, and I'm not even sure what point size I'm going for, just go to town

- tyrant/brusier x 3
- bucher/SM x1
- Ogres x 12
- Ironguts x 10
- Leadbelchers x 4
- Ironblaster x 1
- Mournfang x 2
- Stonehorn x 1

Everyone else, feel free to post your own lists that have worked well.

New Youtube Video is uploading as I speak, Its 13 minutes and has some shootouts to those who have participated in my gnoblog.

Here is the tyrant I'm working on tonight, Greenstuffing atm, filling cracks and adding extra in areas that require more chainmail.

- Looks Rough now, but have some faith :)   ( I looked everywhere for my regular greenstuff but it vanished, I'm using liquid greenstuff but not adding water, so it acts very similar.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
For some reason the video is not uploading, its getting stuck at 3% every single time, very frustrating. Hopefully this is resolved soon

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Base coats going on, I think I'm going to use more iron on this guy, as opposed to my regular theme of using lots of bronze. Undecided, because i do love me some bronze :)

- Dwarf flesh
- leadbelcher
- macragge blue
- rhinox hide (boots)
- mourn fang brown (wood)
- Rakarth flesh  ( wraps on weapon)

Whenever I look at miniatures in the base coating phase I always laugh because they just look so bad. I can see why people new to painting could get discouraged. Its all about adding layer, they all look like crap at the beginning, just don't give up on it before the magic starts

Made some trees! I got a big pack from woodland scenics to start making a mountain themed display board. As for now they will just spruce up my shelf. Please tell me somebody got that beautiful pun..

Anyways, Im amazed at how awesome they turned out. If you need trees, woodland scenics.. seriously great products, and not half bad to make either. I have enjoyed the whole process thus far. Still have many more to go.

They range from two and a half inches to 4 inches. Which is perfect scale for fantasy IMO.

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
4 inches is perfect for lots of things! seriously though, my condolences for your loss and hope your family is well.

The news did indeed make it to us here in the UK about that idiot, sad for those families :(

Those trees look very cool, i might have to check out woodland scenics myself

Very droll! spruce....it's not big and it's not clever!  :D

G_H
Heres a pic of the shelf with the conifers, still have tons of trees left to make. But this is it so far, I'm liking how to fills in space and gives a little life to the boring shelf unit.

Display board would be so awesome, can't wait to work on one.

Green accents wherever possible with the warpstone and such. All leather and cloth will be an scabby red. And I am going to use a very heavy washing on everything to get a dark feel. I'm even debating getting some dip for them, would be cool to try out.

Hey mate, sounds like a good plan...Skaven are a good race to do the dirty washed look.
I can vouch for the dip on the skaven, the strong tone is good. It will still take a while to do, but you can just base coat and dip in a lot of cases.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Yup that's what I'm thinking, do a nice and neat base coat, dip and play

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Depending on what you want, the base coat barely needs to be neat either....worth doing a neat job and rush job and compare the dipped results.

Could a warmachine pivot 180 degrees and shoot a gorger that just showed up behind it? My understanding is that the pivot can only be within the 90 degrees of LOS from the cannon. Seems silly they can wheel around and smack an ambusher

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
I think they can as long as its done in the movement phase......the pivot is free. I might be wrong though, there are others with far better knowledge than me. Does seem a little unrealistic though, surely the ambusher by its very nature would have the element of surprise.
Armies played : Ogre Kingdoms

If I am right (and I could be wrong) then I believe that a warmachine counts, for the purposes of movement, as a lone model.
This means that it cannot pivot and then shoot at a target.

PG27 (Big Book) "...although a lone model that pivots on the spot does count as moving for the purposes of shooting and so on"

I think this would imply that spinning round to face the gorger is fine...but don't expect to be shooting at it in the same turn (Because you can't move a warmachine and shoot).

That's my interpretation of it.

G_H
A war machine (not chariot based Ironblaster) can pivot to face any direction when in the shooting phase..

An Ironblaster, steam tank, thundertusk etc. will need to be facing the desired direction at the end of the movement phase
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
So basically a gorger pops up and it just swivels and pumps it in the face

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
We could all end up at cross-purposes here so;

Connor, what was the "warmachine" in this instance? As WS has pointed out it could be a chariot based warmachine.
Also, at what point did the Gorger pop up in the phases? (as in who's turn was it?) I am slightly inclined to feel that someone was trying to pull a fast one here, however there are circumstances under which this may happen. It does seem stupid though...what would be the point of ambush if everyone  see's you coming?

Actually, scratch all that; I have posted this on the quick rules thread to prevent filling up all your blog with rules replies. Hope this is ok Connor

So I had a lovely trip to Quebec city. Heres some pics of the adventure.
I had to be selective or I would be posting all day, the photos are all places I was staying at / ate at. Plus some nice scenery that quebec city is renowned for.

Looks like a beautiful place. Never been to Canada but it's on my wish list. Does the house with the amazingly painted side have a name?

Matt
It's know as La Fresque du Petit-Champlain. One of the many fresco paintings in the city!

I hope you can one day make it out here. Cool thing about Canada ( or any excessively large country) is that each province is so different than the next that it's hard to group them all together under a single culture.

Gotta see them all!!

While I was out with fellow member ShweddedWheat at the local GW store I decided to pick up another box of mournfang. So that brings me up to a total of 8! Hopefully I can get started on them soon, slap on a few base coats and hopefully find some time to upload a new video.

Still alive
~ConOgre

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Woooo mournfang! Are you going use them as a unit of 8 too? That must be one sight to see, can't wait!
I'm thinking of running 2 groups of 4, in other news. My maneaters arrived the other day. I'm currently in montreal partying it up! But I'll be home this afternoon to take some pictures

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Well hello my fellow ogres!!

I have been absent from the hold for some time now, I know.. :( Summer beckons me with its warm embrace.
Unfortunatley that is still not over, but it doesn't mean that I cannot start thinking of wonderful hobby things to get started on in the near future. As well as plan out my painting projects.

I am happy to announce that my man-eaters are assembled, all except the ninja. Golgfag is also ready but i am painting him un assembled because of hidden details.

The mournfang have arrived and are also all assembled, except gut plates of course! Some are still awaiting primer, and must also be glued to bases. But close enough!

Also shown below is a poor mans travel case I made. Its a cardboard box with another piece of cardboard layer tightly on bottom. I cut squares to match unit sizes and they snuggly ft in place so while transporting they cannot move :)
No its not a battle foam or KRR multicast... but it works :)

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
In other news, I picked up an ironblaster new in box for 20$!!! Guy doesn't play ogres anymore so I figured hey why the heck not. Will make a nice project down the road because we all know how much work the iron blasters are... Ugh

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Nice collection of GW Maneaters there. The carry case is original...I worry for its longevity though! I am surprised that you haven't tapped into the couch/ sofa cushion yet! Often around a city you can find a couch thrown in a skip with big square cushions in cushion covers. Pull of the covers and you are in possession of a large piece of foam.
Cut holes in it and voila! A temporary custom foam carry case. (well the battle foam at least!).

TUESDAY TIPS!!!

Hello! Today I have a tip that I have been meaning to post for some time now, but was brought to my attention by G_H!

This one will help you stay organized and save you a lot of room on your hobby table/room.

USE A BITZ BOX!!!!

I use one, and it works like a dream. Simply go to Wal-mart or your equivalent big box store. Here its Canadian Tire. They sell a lot of fishing/hunting stuff and everything else you could need pretty much. Its where I got my box, and you will have no trouble finding your own if you take a look around.

Here is a link to what I mean. http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-Portable-5-Compartment-Fishing-Tackle-Box-Double-Tackle-Box-p-62609.html

This is simply a portable fishing case. Lots of little separated compartment to keep things like

- left arms / ironfists and left weapons
- right arms / swords and clubs
- heads
- wearable bits like barrels
- gnoblar bits! as you know these pile up quick.

Not only will this keep you organized, but as I said before, It will get rid of all those sprues and free up a TOOOOOON of space in your area.

ORGANIZATION IS EFFICIENCY :)

~ConOgre

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
I could'nt agree more! It also helps with saving bits for other conversions and such. It does take a while to get all of those bits out of their sprues though...
New video!, Just painting some base edges and saying whatsup!!!

All I can say is this;

If winter heralds your return to the forum in a more major capacity...then bring it on!

I have a couple of questions though, related to your video's that I most definitely have watched;

Firstly excellent that you have all the MF and a few other ogres to paint from fall (Autumn) on but, what about the Skaven and possibly High Elves? I thought that winter would herald the beginning of your second army!

I have to ask; what ever happened to the Skaven maneater? I haven't see that guy for a long wile now!

Lastly I would just say this; I don't think the views of your video's are necessarily representative of how good they are. Do not be disheartened that they don't get as many views as the once did, this could be partially to your hiatus from regular posting and the sudden influx of loads (and I do mean loads) of new members.

When winter comes around again I am sure you will be back on top with both video's and painting. I for one look forward to it!

G_H
Hey GH thanks for the reply,

This winter will see the painting of skaven and ogres alike if all goes to plan. This will be my first time painting in winter with a full time job so it will be interesting. But everyone else does it so it shouldn't be too bad.

The skaven maneater has a special place, and it actually won't be in the ogre army! I'm planning a very special place for him in the skaven army as a centrepiece to tie my two armies together. I'm hoping to make room for him on the screaming bell when I get one :) I hope it will make it all nice and fluffy

As for videos, your points are valid. I won't stop making them quite yet as it seems I had a recent jump in YouTube subscriptions which is nice. So we will see where this goes

Okay!! Fellow members of the OS and Gnoblog community!

I would like to extend to you the chance to ask some questions, whether it be about painting or hobby, personal questions or just something you are curious about. Toss them in here and I am going to try my best and answer all of them in a video.

If this goes well then I am going to see about trying to set in motion a ogre stronghold podcast where we can inform members of new hot stuff and the latest warhammer news. On top of questions from the wonderful community that is you!

So fill those leadbelcher guns with those questions and Fire away!

Just found your videos on youtube and they are absolutely an inspiration, same goes with your gnoblog it has inspired me to start my own.
Your tutorial on painting tusks is awesome, I used it on my rhinox that I have just started and it works a treat.
Keep the videos coming Conogre, I would say you are up there with the best youtubers such as warbosstae and girlpainting.

Gav,  :)
Wow! Thanks gav! Those are some incredible compliments and I am extremely pleased you are enjoying my video series. If you have any questions at all, feel free to post them here or PM me and I would be happy to address them here or even make a video if it's something that would be entertaining and helpful for all.

Thanks for stopping by!

If I could help out here a bit,

It may be easier if there are some catagories that members could ask questions about. This way the discussion video's could have a theme.

For example;
New to Ogres? What you need to Know

First time painting Ogres? Some tips and advice

Ogre Kingdoms; A blank canvas

Lets build a....; the highs and lows of GW kits

Lets build an army; 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000pts

I have all the models, but what do they do? A guide to using the Ogre Kingdoms Characters

I think this kind of thing may work Conogre and the advantage is that it does not require too much thought or participation, at first, from members as the video's can be done in absence of any questions....just to get the ball rolling!  ;)

G_H
Well I'll ask one that's still bugging me, how do you paint yellow without it looking rubbish or flat. Its honestly the one colour I have a real problem with and avoid like the plague as a result!
Ill add a question, ive watched your vids on your basing, but i still cannot see quite how you got the look you managed with your Ogres, perhaps a step by step guide for dummies (thinking of myself here) or something like that, with clear close up cam or pics of the steps?

Still though im a big fan of your vids, they really helped me a lot earlier this year when i was starting out :)
so big thanks for your work!

@G-H awesome input as per usual GH. those are some really great topics, will def be in the next video. Along with a skaven painting video coming soon hopefully.

@Villan_Ogre  Oh man this is a toughy. Yellow is the hardest colour to paint by far in my opinion. The key here is to start with a nice watered down cream colour, using many layers to create a smooth appearance. Then moving from a Ivyander dark sun towards a brighter sunburst yellow. Just make sure your paints are very thin and use lots and lots of coats. A nice space marine yellow shoulder pad will often take 8+ coats.

This will make a good video later on, as it is quite hard to accomplish. But certainly not impossible!!!

@Jock o strap  This I can manage for sure, I will make another basing video from start to finish, as my previous ones were a little scattered. All in al its just like painting a model, you just keep adding layers of depth. Start with gravel, move to sand, add mud, big rocks, grass tuffs, then move to flock, then highlight and add mossy colours to gravel bits. It is very easy but I can understand why my videos may be vague. Then next batch of bases I do I will most certainly make an in depth video!!

Found out the GW in Ottawa was doing a customer appreciation day. They were having painting competitions and people could vote on their favourite from multiple categories.

I submitted one for character, war machine, and 5+ man unit. I really doubt ill get a medal. There were some really incredible paint jobs. Plus it seems the whole store is pure 40k... I was the only fantasy. Regardless, I do not lose hope!

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
One thing I will add, that Nazghul model is absolutely amazing. I almost want to get one just to paint. Doubt I will ever get into lotr table top. But talk about a beautiful model. WOW!

~ConOgre

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Good luck with the shop comp mate; I am sure you are in with a chance as your painting is solid and high quality.

Anyway, your only up against Space Marines...and who wants to see more of them damn things; they are two a penny where ever you go! Give me a good fantasy model any day.

As for the video's, I know you can do it. When are we doing the Q&A one?

G_H
So I understand the whole sort has been updated with the return of nagash. High elves are fighting with the dark elves against chaos. Undead allying with empire to fight the north. Kislev destroyed...

Any news on where the ogres are in all this?

YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/Connman613
Not quite where it sits yet....

Elves are in no way united as of yet but Teclis secretly speaks to Morathi about some plan. Undead are absolutely not allied with The Empire. All wizards from all races are tempted by the new death magic around that they can all channel and some Empire wizards suburb (Balthasar Gelt being one!) but he and any others that are found are slain/tortured. They are able to, which justifies model sales, but they certainly don't like it!

The word on the Ogres in the book is thus: the volcanoes are erupting. All of them. Except for some die heard fire mouth lovers who stay behind to burn to a cinder, the ogres migrate. ALL of them. Greasus no longer has control and people are disobeying. Some have gone up north to fight with chaos.

Now if we were pessimistic this paves the way for our homeland to be destroyed and for us to become mercenaries only once more. The other option is... I have no idea.

Ah, thanks for clarifying that!  Well it sounds like a pretty meek future for the ogres... :( I was hoping they were going to make a giant horde and go to war against somebody.

Ah, thanks for clarifying that!  Well it sounds like a pretty meek future for the ogres... :( I was hoping they were going to make a giant horde and go to war against somebody.

If you call an entire race marching out into the world to eat, kill, and destroy for fun "meek," I don't want to see you on a bad day :P Ogres may or may not be playing a large role in the new fluff because we are not a key player like Undead or Chaos. There was some talk of what Mazdamundi (sp?) said about the "Great Exodus must begin" may actually refer to Ogres! He could have set the volcanoes in motion to force the entire ogre race to move and upset the balance of the world even more (or try to right it!). Pure speculation, but a really cool idea.
Conster, I am agreeing with MAVV here;
You are right in the respect that we may not be central to the current story-line, we may never be, but think on.
If the Nagash and future books leaves Ogres as the Mercenary "hired by anyone" army then, in theory we can do absolutely anything we want! Want to do chaos ogres; we are there!. Want to go the goody-2-shoes route with Empire BOOM, we are there too. Lost in the mountains and hook up with the rat scum? Hello! We can do that too.
Modelling/ fluff wise we get to do whatever we want. I am assuming you are thinking that the back-story for the ogres may be less prevalent than other races? Well, that is the nature of being an ogre player  ;) we can live with it because we may well get to be the most creative army out there!

 :D Happy days!

G_H
Haha too true. I LOVE the Mazdamundi idea for us. It's not one I've read before (and believe me I have trawled the web and spoken to every contact I have about these releases) and that would be a cheeky treat!

We are one of the older races along with the Lizzie's. I also think it's very unlikely. However...an east and west pincer of ogres and Lizzie's sounds both hilarious and awesome! (If on,y because I own some Lizardmen...)
