Ogres For Glorious Death

Greetings !

I'm new here, but been blogging for some time now. My first army were Dwarfs, but after a while I yearned something different. I ended up with Ogres, so here are my ingredients to the cauldron of the Great Maw.

Btw.. That was incredibly fast to paint as I used mainly washes, comparing what I've done with dwarves. Not a showcase level, but decent enough for gaming table

Also generated some fluff for my Ogre army:

The Bonebiters from the Land of Khemri ! The tribe came to know as Bonebiters as they specialized feeding themselves with the magical bone marrow of the undead skeleton hordes among other "normal" roast. As time passed the skin of the ogres became color of the never ending sand dunes, under the burning sun. Usually bones sucked dry are discarted, but the head of a great bone goliath is a fine trophy and warning for any foe.. Beware !

I've seen that Ogre used before, but never with the banners on the back. Is that the stock model, or have you converted it?

The banner is a conversion. The ogre is from Avatars of War. The half of the banner is from Ogre battalion box and the other half is from Mournfang's box. My child found the skull somewhere on the ground and I stuck the AoW ogre's original banners on it ..The purpose was that the BSB would stand out comparing to other standard bearers.

How does the BSB rank in a unit with those pointy weapons to each side?

Great work - maybe the skull is a bit on the larger side of things. (edit: after looking for a bit longer it actually fits in : )

I really like it! I originally felt the same about the skull, but I actually now really like it. It looks like it is a fossil from a giant or one of the Sky Titans Love it! Looking forward to seeing more

I really like that unit As a whole it looks seriously good, and the bases are great! My only suggestion would be that they need something to make them look less clean and tidy. Maybe the blood spatter or tattoos you mentioned

Thanks.. Tattoos scare me a little bit, because I'm afraid I'll ruin the whole model with it. Though I'm afraid to paint them, ogres are the best models to practice them, because of the vast layer of skin.

As I finish painting the whole army I'll have a gore fest and splatter the whole army at the same session. That'll be fun

I usually go there where a fence is the lowest, as did with the bases. Sand from my kids sandbox and the cheapest grass-like material I could find from the hobby shop

I haven't decided how I will use the Gnoblars, but somehow I dislike them and may not paint them at all.

I often find tattoos are best when kept simple They just really make the world of difference, and help to break up the skin tones a bit

Dont be afraid of doing the tattoos! Practice does make perfect and start out on some paper till you get the hang on what patterns work for you. I found it surprisingly easy once I got started (not that my results were fantastic but it was by no means as hard as I imagined).

Before you start focus on what color you want. I recommend a good contrast color so the tattoo does not blend into the skin tone. If your skin tone is rather "warm" eg using a dwarf flesh like color mixed with other, then the tattoo could be blue'ish to create a contrast in the colors. Of course too much contrast is no good either but hopefully you get the picture : )

Also I did my ogre tattoos but first making up the shape in a darker color (eg dark blue) and then highlighted with a lighter blue/grey (using grey here makes them more neutral and I would do this rather than using another blue). BUT do the highlight inside the darker color so the lighter color is 'inside' the tattoo.

I hope this all helps you getting started and I found it is: Easy, hides sloppy lack of details on the skin and adds a unique part to the otherwise rather similar ogre bodies!

The guys on the upper right hand side has reddish tats but these blen too mcuh into the skin sadly - they took longer time to make and the results is no good to me, but at close range they do look good : ) Just not what I wanted. The more tribal ones was faster and I think they work better - mind you, these models were my practice models for tattoos, so it is really just getting started : ) ASk away if you have any questions to what I did.

Edit2: And dont do the tattoos too small or use dots, they get grindy as you also can see in my link : )

Thanks for the tips. I have been thinking of the Bonebiters tribe's signature tattoo, so I just have to practice to draw it on paper and master it before I start messing with the figures

Do you use some kind of glazes on top of the tattoos to make it blend into skin and look more real ?

So I painted the skin fully before I painted the tattoo and I kinda regret that now. I would like to have the base (darker) color of the tattoo done before I did the wash of the skin.

My skin is done by base color (foundation with varying dwarf flesh/dark flesh/elf flesh) and then rough highlights, then finer/lighter highlight and a wash and a touch up highlight.

This way the base of the tattoo would blend better in the skin before the whole model is touched up and you can see if the tattoo will over shadow the rest of the model.
My tattoos does sadly at some models look more like they were just put on the skin and kills the skin curvature.

Oh well, next time I will work the base tattoo intro the greater painting plan : )

Glazing, I think, would maybe blend the tattoo too much into the skin. I think want to focus more on for the future is to better layer the brighter colors in the tattoo so darken areas still appear dark without too many washes.

For trial drawing I would recommend just starting with the brush on paper so you get the feeling of how the brush reacts to how you want to pain the tattoo. I had to get used to a new technique of painting more free hand styled - which is not too hard just different : )

Actually that gave me an idea. My ogres' skin is painted by two layers of sepia wash. What if I'd paint the tattoo on the white base coat and after that add the skin colour with sepia wash, or between the two sepia coats ?!? That could make the tattoos look more part of the skin than the one I would paint on top of everything

Hey all..

After a long planning of tattoos, I finally made my move. Some of them succeeded better than the other, but main thing is that every Ogre has a tattoo of their own

Liking the tatts, got the colouration about right to look natural

After a bit of painting break I finished painting the first group of Ironguts.

Thanks dude ..The skin and pants are painted with wash, so I have to be very careful not to mess them with other colors, because fixing them would be nerve wrecking.

Stonehorn in the making… Any suggestion which color would go well with the red skin color ?

Were you thinking for the fur on the nape of the beast? If so why not a bluish-white, cold to counteract the heat of the skin?
