Hey guts, I want to run a tyrant and two bellies, and was thinking on this set up for the tyrant:
Tyrant Heavy Armour Enchanted shield Sword of bloodshed Giant breaker Seed of rebirth 315
He is very expensive but he does churn out 8 str 6 attacks at a good iniative and ws, he has moderate protection with a 3+/6++. What do you guys think? I like the idea of 8 attacks. Is it worth dropping giantbreaker for better protection is str 5 enough? or is the 6 needed?
Thoughts please

In my opinion, the Tyrant needs more defense and needs the ability to help deal with threats that your ironguts struggle with (like character-stars, etherials, strong ward saves, etc).
I would suggest:
Heavy Armor, Ironfist, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Dragonhelm, Talisman of Preservation, Other Trickster's Shard * Has a 3+/4++ with a 2++ vs fire, gets extra attacks + str vs units with characters (most of the armies out there), and forces ward save rerolls.

I keep moving between snarks build and dropping OTS and dragonhrlm for giantbreaker. There is just so much armor out there i also like the extra punch.
A quick question though, would greedy fist, giantbreaker and sword of might stack for +3 str?
Thanks, TLK

As a quick note:
In my game last night, my tyrant's unit charged a tzeentch warrior block containing a sorc, bsb, and 3++/reroll 1s combat character. The Tyrant had my build listed above... and had 8x Str 8 attacks. After combat, only the 3++/reroll 1s guy was still alive, and he was run down when he failed to roll insane courage on the break test.
I highly recommend the sword of anti-heroes if you are looking for +str/+attacks. There is almost always at least one enemy unit with multiple characters. When you reach that unit, your champion will take the challenge and your tyrant will be free to destroy.

PS: And yes, you could get Str 8 by stacking the greedy fist, giantbreaker and sword of might.

Slightly off-topic; but I don't think you are allowed to post individual item points.

Oops my bad just copy and pasted it straight from my list, didnt even consider that - edited now TLK

I prefer to run mine more defence oriented.
Heavy armour, Iron Fist, Maw Seeker, Tricksters Helm, Biting Blade. T6 and re-rolling that makes him hard to put wounds on. With WS6 most infantry wont touch him. I don't use him to "deal" with characters directly unless its a bus. If that's the case then I avoid them or have them chase silly targets all game
I use my tyrant to rank up some silly CR in combat and make those lords/heroes flee. The fire bellys also help in this area. I have seen my unit kill an entire unit of Prince + Tomb Guard in 1 turn. That was with a challenge which I lost. He is not adept at dealing with lord/hero choices head on, there are plenty out there who cost less that will spank him and send him packing... He is there to prevent CR generation and generate a whole lot THAT is his use, not duelling fighty HKB lords.

Yes, Greedy Fist and Giantbreaker would change your base stat and would apply to anything refering to it. While the Sword would only count for your actual melee attacks. So Impact Hits and Stomps would be at Str6, regular attacks are Str7.

Intresting, i didnt consider the increase in str for impact hirs and stomps! So many builds so little tyrants, TLK
mcsheehy11 Apr 2013
Yeh the increase in impact hits + stomps. however unless you run him solo you will have +1str for every rank behind him anyway. Therefore he is usually S8 on the charge!
Yeah, so its not going to matter much. You will usually wound on 2s anyway and unless they have a 1+ armor the difference between str6 and str8 is negligable.

^^ This man speaks sense...
Wait didn't he agree with me?
But seriously. If your thinking along the lines of a killy tyrant don't focus on strength focus on sheer number of attacks I however prefer to make him tanky so I don't give up any CR
Indeed. Generally I find a Sword of Striking a fantastic item on Ogre characters - cheap, allows for a shield, and there is no situation where it doesn't come in handy. And at the stupidly low cost you can spend all your remaining points on defences, so you should be alright.
Failing that though, a Great Weapon is also wonderful - gets you that high strength for dealing with enemy characters/knights/etc, and though it takes two hands you can happily lob points into a 4+ ward, 2+ armour save, and have a couple of points left for a random item.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?

I plan on running the following with 2FB this weekend
Tyrant: Giantbreaker; Talisman Of Preservation; Helm Of Discord; great weapon; heavy armour.
Expensive at 327pts but 4+/4+ with 5 S8 hits with possibility of free hits against a unit/char could be devastating
Those who live by the sword, get shot by those who don't.

I like that last setup. I run mine with H.A., dragonhelm, sword of anti-heroes, talisman of preservation and other trickster's shard. He has held up remarkably well. In a recent 4 game stretch he got into combat early every game and took a grand total of 2 wounds. The wards help greatly. He is also above average Killy as well.

My Tyrant with the sword of bloodshed never hit anything.
You have been warned.

Why dont i see and Tyrants with Greedyfists and a Brace of Pistols, the - magiclvl on wizards got an errata saying it worked on ranged attacks did't it?
mcsheehy16 Apr 2013
Yes it works on ranged attacks. But you get what 2 shots? usually long ranged. Then you need to shoot the bunker, you have no way to "snipe" him like we did with death spells. So there is no point running a sub-par build when the points will be effective elsewhere.
It says yes to ranged attack (shooting) (and only close combat in another bullet). There is no mentioning of magical hits from spells, so no to spells. Needless to say, you can interpret it on rather alot of ways. My view is from the RAI point of view.
Clear this point with your opponent before starting the game : )
