TLK's Hunters tribe

original thread ↗

Hey dudes,
First up sorry for the really uninspiring title - am yet to come up with a suitible tribe name

Secondly; this is my second Ogre army came out of the hobby and am recently getting back into it. Made a series of trades here on the stronghold and have secured myself the following
1x Hunter to be used as my Tyrant (Cheers FF!)
16x ogres with an optional 12 irongut bits
1x Ironblaster/scrap launcher
2x Mournfang cavalry (My thanks to ose)
3x Spacewolf thunderwolf cavlry that I was gunna use as mournfangs but now might just use them as unit fillers (My thanks to the big boss!)

The direction im going with this army is a tribe of hunters, so a hunter for my tyrant and two firebellies that look like shamans. The bulls will all be carrying kills back to camp I just need to get my hands on a few more bits (Check my gnoblar market post to help me out  ;) ) Then for leadbelchers I brought a load of harpoon launchers and am going to convert ogres with these as stand ins for belchers.
Im not sure what to do with my iron guts as yet.... suggestions? There heavy armour and big weapons dosent fit the hunter theme all to well.
Im also thinking of mounting a giant crossbow instead of the ironblaster cannon, although I could work into the fluff that occasionally big targets need the brute force of a cannon to bring down.

As for the tribe name or motif, im thinking wolves... I can use fenris wolves as sabre tusks and use the big thunderwolves as unit fillers... maybe even convert mournfang heads into wolf heads. The motif can be a styalised wolf head like the space wolf ones and feature on banners and tatoo's, but I am not sure how well this would work - might just stick to dags that look like teeth, not too sure yet

Ive been working on a BSB today but have just about finished him and the light is too poor to take a picture so I will take pics tomorrow, sorry for sucha  dry post evreyone loves the pictures  :P

Thanks for reading and stay tuned!
Thanks,
TLK
Nothing wrong with a post with no pictures!! We love to read too! ;) this all sounds great - love the theme and am looking forward to seeing the emblem. I would go for the converted giant crossbow idea for the ironblaster: it sounds awesome and will be way more unique !!

Thanks Belch glad you like the theme ;D, and yeah the crossbow is a cool idea but im at a loss of where to get the crossbow bar scratch building - might bash the high elf one about.

The emblem will probably go a little something like this : http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110305084414/warhammer40k/images/e/e5/Space_Wolves_Livery.jpg  bar the detail on the nose of course!

And finally the grand unvieling of my BSB! still a little WIP just saw the mould line in the picture and a couple of joints need filling with some liquid gs.

Front shot:

Back shot:

He is considerably bigger then a normal bull as I used my own tutorial which you guys should check out  ;)
over here: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=24449.0

He is going to be positioned on some rocks surveying the battlefield like a boss  8)
Some serious C&C is welcome my gs'ing is basic at best
Enjoy!
TLK
So it looks great! To human scale right? Looks much more powerful than the usual proportions so success I'd say!
The left look looks a bit short still but maybe you're aware of that!

For the crossbow - perhaps look at miniature crossbows online? Or the scracthbuild shouldn't be too tough as long as you can get yourself some cheap wood bits!

Yeah more to T-rex scale actually because the legs and body got elongated but the arms didnt, and the left side is shorter because he has a bent leg like he is resting one foot up on a pile of rocks - just need to add the cork basing in.

And yeah could look for some bits of dale or something and make a scratch built one, just need one that would be legal in actual GW stores so I can play there and maybe tournamnets,
Any ideas how to make ironguts look abit more huntery? apart from spamming fur onto them?

Thanks,
TLK
What friggin cloak is that!?
Lol holy shit I love that model.

Will you sell it to me? Or make one for me! :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
That cloak looks like it's from the Space Wolves Terminator kit to me.
Very nice!
Yeah the cloak is from the spacewolf terminators, works really well however I would have liked it to be abit more tatty.
@Ash I'd make one for you but unfortunatly don't have any bits left ): and I like him to much to sell ;D - however if this army collapses anytime soon due to other commitments I'll let you know!

Anyway only a small update as I am still trying to locate some bits to convert my bulls ):
If anyone has the following for trade please message me!
- Running man from the giant kit
- Chain trap
- Great spear
- Hanging Prisoner from the thundertusk kit
- Orc Boar boyz, boars

Either way without further adoo here is my tyrant, added an iron fist to look like abit of a bear claw pretty standard:

And a really bad photo of my mournfangs but shields! wooo

Next stage is probably going to be my leadbelchers, but with harpoon launchers instead of cannons - think big bad repeated crossbows!
Thanks,
TLK
Firstly I'd like to say very nice jobs on the conversions, seamless. I'd like to throw a suggestion out there for the ironguts. Maybe instead of their two handed weapons, you could give them giant bones to represent the two handers. Or some other large animal part say a leg or something? Well I hope you draw inspiration from this!

Thanks for the kind words Grum  :) my ideas tend to run ahead of my conversion capibilities but so far so good! And bone weapons seems like a good idea see if I can get some river troll ones, not a fan of the more organic parts as weapons though.

Anyhow update inbound:
First WIP 'leadbelcher' but with a harpoon launcher instead!

This guys just chilling out having a little sit down, gives a kind of relaxed hunter feel like the group have sat back in a shady cave or are preparing a kill.

C&C welcome as always, still open to suggestions on the iron guts and also any suggestions on how to make gut plates abit more huntery? was thinking about doing them half coverd in fur or something? thoughts??
Thanks,
TLK!
I think you should give the 'half covered in fur' thing a go. It can look quite naff if it's done badly but your conversions are fantastic so you should have no problems there! The thing that's striking about them is that they each have a clear vision/idea that is so obvious when looking at the execution. Well done, sir!

Fur would be cool! What about supplies? As hunters are always roving and out in the 'field'. You could have large knives for skinning or just weapons to hunt with. Also what about small limb trophies like a sabretusk's paw hanging from a chain? That hunter sitting down is very nice! Oh another thought maybe some basic traps such as bear traps from the bull kit? I'll be quiet now:)... Good hunting!
@ Belch - Gave the half coverd in fur thing a go but not really sold on it  :( maybe once I get better at cutting fur into gs ill like it more... or could just keep the gutplate and paint on the tribe symbol... although fur would fir best.
And thanks for the comments on the conversions  :D unfortunatly that angle waned a little bit when I was doing the command of the bulls  :( but the rest of the unit is still characterful (I think anyway  ;) )

@Grum - keep these thoughts and ideas comming! FEED MY IMAGINATION, i got ideas comming out my ears but such things as skinning knives and little trophies eluded me! Will defo add some of them in!!!

Anyhow dudes, update a unit of Bulls! These are still WIP as need there plates furring and maybe add some accesories such as bags, horns, knives etc. And I decided an axe was a suitible hunting weapon

Command:

The standard bearer has the sort of wepon that you throw and it wraps around someones legs and trips them up, the crusher has a boar hunting spear (with the barb the wrong way) and the musician has this sneaky little knife...

Which will look better when painted!
Then the characterful models, looking like a hunting party.

Self explanitory really, the guys tracking and setting down a bear trap, and the other two are bringing the kill home.

This was the attempt at fur on the plate:

Slightly better irl but not by much  ;)

Anyway C&C or ideas welcome as always, next stop unit fillers and ironguts!

Enjoy your weekend guts,
TLK
Some fantastic conversions there the tracking one and the 2 with the cow hanging are particularly great!  Can't wait to see these painted!

Haha thank you! I'm under pressure now:). Another idea for an ogre could be one arming a trap, a home made one with either two crossbows or pistols/muskets pointed inwards probably hidden beneath some rock piles. He could be 'twanging' the trip wire. Just some thoughts! What about supplies in other forms as well such as food stashes (I know the cow:)). So you could do a pack ogre or some satchels on their sides. Maybe one ogre with the vulture from the stonehorn/thundertusk kit.
@Zolas Ah cheers buddy  :D now have a legal unit of trappers to join my hunting tribe  ;>)! The painting will have to await a while though, as my converting is comming thick and fast but ive run out of square bases

@Grum Hmmm arming a trap might be quite difficult cos the tubsters arent the most poseable beasts D: and I was thinking a pack old rhinox if I can dig up my old scrappie - but ive added some pouches and stuff to the bulls.

Anyway update INCOMMING!
I found some gor shields  :D  :D So I thought to use them as gutplates for my ironguts as it would look more heavily armoured and still fit the theme. So Irongut Champion:

Also a unit filler for the bulls:

Last but not least...
FIREBELLY! In a late night crazed moment of madness I went greenstuff crazy on this fella: I hate sculpting flesh so any tips to get it better or smoother will be appreciated.

C&C welcome,
TLK
Looking fantastic. I see what you mean about the fur. But oddly enough your flames are fantastic, when essentially the sculpting is the same just with flipped gravity haha. I love all the ideas here, a foraging tribe (so axes are cool, they need wood for fires to cook the meat after all...if they cook it at all!)
You'll need to green stuff the 'mouth' on the pelt of the fire belly (thing above it's head, the join is very visible there but I'm sure you knew that. Looking amazing on the whole. The two bulls carrying a horse is genius! Though why is a saddled horse caught in a trap? Has it's owner left it? For what reason (perhaps he can be in a cage in another unit filler? The giant spruce bit perhaps...)

I think this army is really starting to take shape; fantastic work! I like the character instilled in your models, like the Ogre tracking the paw prints, and the two Bulls carrying the cow :)

Superb, have a pet gnoblar! :)

@Belch Im hoping the fur will come up something delicious like yours! If not im in trouble    And thanks for pointing ou the mouth missed that! will get to it sometime soon.... probably tonight. And it's a saddled horse because it's the only horse I had  but the captured rider is a solid gold idea! Shame horde of bits charges like 15 dollars for the giant cage and man + like 12 dollars shipping to the UK. Might have to make like a 'thrown rider' on the base or get the tied up prisoner from the thunder tusk kit and have an ogre manhandling him.

@JJ Thanks for the kind words and the little fella! Glad you guys like the models  :>)

Update, more ironguts... have 7 now (+  2 characters) for a 9 man unit.
Command models, the musician is pointing forward and the standard bearer has a 'net' slung over his shoulder for catching things. His faceguard got furry but it does look like a great big bushy beard. Mournfang standard because its got a big old skull on and the banner looks like hide so a Win-Win from the hunting perspective.

Second rank, Figured Glaives would be good for hunting bigger beasts cutting at legs and bellies. The furthest right guy has a boar hunting spear to urm hunt boar  ;) and the middle guy didnt look very huntery so he got a bear trap base aha!

A unit filler giant wolf, (thunderwolf)

Here is the unit ranked up: Pretty uninspiring with no paint job but hey-ho !

Enjoy  :D any thoughts on the theme/comments or ideas on colour scheme welcome aswell as C&C on the work itself,
Get involved!
