Monthly Painting Challenge - April 2013

original thread ↗

Time for the April Painting Challenge! You only have until the 10th to make your pledges and get painting!

It's the
:maw: April Painting Challenge! :maw:

Just joining in? The idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or build/convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:
  • All Pledges will be frozen after the 10th day of the month. There is no changing of *any* pledge after day 10. Pledges are still accepted after the 10th of the month, but they can not be changed once they are made.
  • If you finish your pledge, and you would like to really impress the rest of the Stronghold, you can then go on to add a Bonus pledge. Any additions to your pledge made before the 10th go onto your initial pledge and will not count as a Bonus pledge.
  • We need to know The number of Models when you post your pledge. 3, 8, 10, or even 100. Saying "A unit" is not acceptable.
  • Extra incentive: I will be awarding :gnoblar: to those who complete their pledge. I'll also be awarding an extra :gnoblar: to the one pledgee who posts the best photos of their pledge throughout the month!

*Please* post the progression of your work (pictures if at all possible). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the Butchers Cauldron or your Gnoblog.

FAQ
Q: So I can Only do Ogre Kingdoms or GW Minis, for my pledge?
A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like, however this is the Ogre Stronghold, and we are naturally more excited to see Ogre models. If you're working on one of your other Armies or projects, and/or any other Models, please feel free to make a Pledge.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!
A: well.. You have until the 10th day of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There may be small prizes awarded for photographic evidence, but you really only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q: What if I finish my pledge but decide to do more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's not as big of an accomplishment  to make a pledge with 75% of the project painted at the start of the month...  That's not to say that sometimes the last 25% of the project your working on is not more than worth being a pledge of its own..

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?
A. You bet! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

I'm going to toss in this time again.  I've been working on getting a ton of minis built so I can prime all at once.
I'm going to finish building all my IG models.  This includes 15 more Cadians, and 36 more DKoK made from Cadian/WGF Shocktroop bits.

That's where I stand at the moment.

So I'm joining the Painting Challenge for the first time since being part of the Stronghold!! I think it's about time I had extra incentive to get those models painted and photos up for evidence!!!
So enough talk - my pledge:

5 Knights of Chaos (undivided)
12 Warriors of Tzeentch (weapons not attached as they haven't arrived)
Convert and assemble an entire unit of 20 marauders (finished when primed)

Note - basing these models isn't included as my bases take FORVER so I'm sure they will be next months challenge!

(The slayer)

Army up on E-bay by monday!

And thats my challenge done
Well, I really bombed out last month, despite being supremely confident I had a very easy pledge (what with my patented speed-painting technique and all!)... In my defence, I had a holiday to Tunisia, food-poisoning, two bouts of the common cold, and a rough month at work, so I found no time for hobby.

I would really love to finish the Plaguebearers, because they are stupidly easy and look pretty good. However, being a bit of a hobby butterfly, my pledge this month will be to assemble all of the characters to my Chaos Dwarf army, and bonus pledge will be to assemble Tamurkhan the Maggot Lord... Providing they arrive in a timely manner! :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Gosh, I feel slow for only painting 1 gut so far, damn you people!
Bit of an undead pale theme for this one.
Since this is my first pledge and also a quite late one I will start with something which I hope to be able to complete.

I pledge to finish painting and base my Thundertusk. I will also prime and finish the riders of my two mournfang cavalry!
Hmm.... Already completed my second pledge out of three and I have the easiest to finish.

Oh well, the rest will be bonus stuff.

My hood is my castle...
Thought I'd post a few pictures of my work on my almost completed Thundertusk. There has come so many things in the way so painting this guy has taken far too long (read project started in august 2012). Also my first attempt on OSL so I'd be very happy for some comments and thoughts! :)
2nd part done, really like the fur sculpt on these.
Phat Rhinox!

I have obviously been too modest with my pledge, and finished scraping, building, and filling these three pieces this weekend and I just sprayed them at the office toolshed. I hope to finish all three this week making the total four pieces (I intend to use the trees for some ruins with my fifth box).

My hood is my castle...
Gosh, those trees are a real hell to clean from mouldlines.

I'm joining in towards the end here but better late than never.

The following models will be prepped for painting (this includes partial assembly, removal of mold lines, cleaning, etc.):

6 Bulls
6 Ironguts
4 Leadbelchers
6 Gnoblar helpers from the above kits
1 Butcher

Finished my pledge.
And as a bonus, last ogre for quite a while. Moving on thursday so I'll be out of it for some time.
In my first participation in the painting challenge, I feel I may have exaggerated my painting speed in my own head, and the challenge is becoming less and less likely to be completed by the time the month is up! *gulp!*

Edgler - excellent Ogres, especially the gut plate on the last one (grime FTW!).

I was able to paint up my dead woods so all four are painted.

I am also experimenting and planning to return to my roots with a grimey looking Stirland force that will fit my barren terrain. I intend to use mostly models from the Mordheim, Empire Militia and Empire Archer range, mixed with a few greatsword boxes (as state troopers) and some knights. Only two test models done but I am quite interested in continuing with these models.

Next up - the last part of pledge. :)
My hood is my castle...
My small pledge for the month is complete... Finished Ironblaster

My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Got side tracked as usual so my markers will be finished tomorrow evening at the latest.

Instead I build a lot of ruins (pics up later today as they get finished) as well as my all time favorite model:

I have this model in several versions, as the great Captaon Johan von Reisig in my Reiklander Warband (won several campaigns) and as Lars von Reisig as the BSB in my former Reikland army. Now with a Stirland force on the way I have decided to put him on the spot he deserves - my Empire army's general. Needless to say, he is the top dog of my collections (I have two unopened blisters with this mini left...).

Edit: ruins finished! To finish painting these will be my may pledge (and something else). Only some basing to do and these are ready for priming.

My hood is my castle...
I will fail my pledge as I get sidetracked all the time.

No big loss, I was able to do a lot of stuff this month anyway. :)

Here is the finished ruins. Quite happy with the result even if the lines from the pieces when put together are still visible (used liquid green stuff this time instead of real GS that I used on the trees). Something I can easily fix later.

I am very happy with my sinister statue - true ogre style.

My hood is my castle...
Well, I was far too ambitious this month and have failed. I completed my unit of warriors, but not the knights which remain half completed and the marauders are still only 8 built.

On the plus side I know what my next pledge will be...

Completely failed with my pledge this month. With deadlines and final exams only a month away I dont think I will get anywhere with May either! Let alone with the High Elves release and making changes to that army.
Ogre Achievements: 16/101

Failed mine, did not enter the painting competition after all, and just couldnt find the motivation to paint the characters to best of my abilties.

And the army is for sale, but hasnt sold yet. Damn, no new models for me in the near future :(
Failed too still not in the zone and have had a lot of DIY stuff at home keeping me busy currently  :(

I did not complete my pledge. Flight training has slowed me down, but it's more important so no biggie. I still have a good bit to do so I will roll it over into May for a second go.
Well I got my Gnoll painted but didn't finish the base nor do I have photos! Moving into my new house has taken up all my (non-existent) free time!!! Sorry I didn't shepard this thread well this month... :(

I succeeded at my task!   Although I don't have a photo editor (can someone recommend a good site that allows me to edit my pictures as I post them, as I don't know anything about photobucket or the like?).

I ended up being able to build 45 Cadians and DKoK style Imperial Guard.    WOOT WOOT.

Next month's challenge will include me getting them and a ton of others primed.
