TitanChewers- The birth of an army by Gnoblar_Herder
Firstly i should say i have never really bothered with Blogs etc before. I always felt it was like opening a door into my world, and most people who have been there just didn't like it much! Having said that, i decided that actually this would be as much use to me as it may be of interest to others (or not as the case may be).
As i am starting a fantasy army from scratch after having a 20+ year gap from playing WFB, then i would actually like to document my progress as i build this army.
I decided to start an ogre army purely by accident. It came about because i have already amassed a small Ork army for 40k (that i rarely play TBH) and i started to get really bored of painting green. A friend was building up his Skaven army (which i knew pretty much nothing about, the Skaven, not the army) and asked me if i would paint a couple of his models for him as he was getting bogged down with painting clanrats and was getting some disaproving looks form members of his club as "grey plastic" seemed to be the constant colour of choice for his army. So he bunged me a couple of Ratogres and asked me to paint them. Knowing pretty much nothing about Skaven (they didn't exist when i was last playing WFB) he said that Ratogres where huge beasts kept in dank dark cellars and created by some sort of mutant making clan of rats.
With this in mind i painted him these two;
Sorry about the size of the picture...i dont really know how to resize them. (wow...looking at that i can see where i needed to improve on these two!!! I never saw them up that close when i painted them! Urgh!)
The reason i painted one blue was i guessed that this would be the effect on this foul beast if it was kept in a cellar for a few years without sun light...probibly not very Skaveny in reality.
Anyway, after doing these i decided to take another (long overdue) look at fantasy and to cut a long story short, decided to start an OK army. The reasons for this were; They are big...which is handy if you are old and have bad eyesight! They appeared, as an army, to lend themselves to lots of conversions; which i like the idea of but have yet to see if i can actually pull off with any skill. I liked the fluff. So, that's where i am. I will post some pictures of my first units as soon as i have then. Gnoblar_Herder or Xander.

(being a total numpty, i assume to continue this blog thing i just reply to myself...right?)
So, OK it is. I have purchased an army box to get me started. Having read the OK army book at first i decided to do an army based on the Lazarghs tribe. The reason for this was i kind of liked the idea of the mutated sack-cloth wearing road to Maw huggers that the fluff suggests these guys are. With that in mind the first couple of WIPs are;
and these other two;
The idea was to get the sack-cloth look on lock before expanding the idea. Obviously these guys are not finished and need a bit of work to get them completed. All comments are welcome, good or bad. However i am not so sure i am sold on the whole Lazarghs thing any more...reading the fluff there is a suggestion that they may be a touch thinner (?) than normal Ogres which while a nice idea, would be a pretty tall order for someone who isnt that averse to the use of green-stuff or the like. Also, actually selecting a specific tribe maybe a bit limiting, so the next few i do i may change the theme a bit. Anyway thats where i am currently at. More pic's to come. Xander

There looking good.
You can always build your own tribe using the fluff behind a Tribe or tribes you like.
Either way ogres is one of the few armies where anything and everything goes.

Really Sweet looking! Is it just me or did you go for the bag cloth feel?
You can buy gold as bright as the sun and diamonds as pale as the moon. But you cannot buy the sun, you cannot own the moon...
One handers are for spanking, 2-handers are for killing!

TBH i was rather limited with, shall we say, usable materials on which to practice with. Needless to say, my dishes are a bit less clean than they should be due to the sudden and misterious dissapearence of all the dish-cloths in my house.....who knows how these things happen.

Well, as is always the case, Christmas was a bust and i got exactly what i got last year...that is nothing! Happy days. On the plus side this means my Jan BC challenge should be easier! So, i have just started work on 6 Ironguts. I will post pic's of the (now finished) Ogre bulls, and i have decided rather than add the ironguts into my Jan 13 quota to just get them finished and stop being a sissy about it. I have been at work solidly over the Xmas period, as is the need of my job, so have had 0 time off...which means no time for painting. This is an imbalance that i shall address asap. It is my intention to get the rest of my Ogre Kingdoms army box finished this moth as well as 30 gnoblars and a slaughtermaster i have to do. First up will be the leadbelchers then the slaughtermaster and i will bang the gnoblars in at the end of the month. Well, best get on with it! Will post up pictures of the bulls and the Ironguts as i finish them. Thank god i dont have 2 Ork battlewagonz, 2 Dakka jetz, 80 boyz, 30 shoota boyz, 5 lootaz and a bunch of Haumagants to get finished this month as well ( ) Xander
(just undercoated the leadbelchers and the Slaughtermaster...so it's game on)
Gnoblar_Herder05 Jan 2013
So, as promised some pictures of my first 6 finished Ogres. They wont win any painting compertitions, but it did give me a feel for the models. The standard still needs some work TBH as i dont know yet what to put on the banner and i have an issue with writing something on the Look-out Gnoblars sheild but anyway;
Here are the Lazargh style sack cloth (or dish cloth) cloak things i was working on. I probibly made more work for myself by ensuring i had painted under the cloth so that flesh can be seen through the cloth.
Gnoblar_Herder05 Jan 2013
Now those guys are done (give or take the standard) i am now trying to quickly finish these guys so i can get on with my January 13 pledged commitments. Here we have my first bunch of Ironguts;
Obviously they arent quite done yet, a couple need more flesh work and there are some Gnoblars that need allot of work yet. Decided to do some stripey trousers on the champion guy, just to see if i could do it. With the standard i decided to forgo the stone and make the teeth warpstone as a nod to the Skaven thing that started my ogre army.
Frostbit305 Jan 2013
If u are still not sold on your theme could I suggest The Tribe of Shrewd Fulg. Not sure if he made it into the newest dex, but I'm sure google could help if he didn't. Basically he has close ties with the skaven beast masters and has ogres he is displeased with turned into rat ogres. Would open the door to including rat ogres in your own army as you've shown a great ability to paint them, and could maybe use shaven slaves as gnoblars or mixed in with them. Would tie your army in with your friends if you are into that sort of thing.
Gnoblar_Herder09 Jan 2013
Noticing the date (and knowing how slow i am at painting) i thought i had better get my finger out and start on the three things i said i would paint for January. Got off to a good start with some leadbelchers;
The base coats are done plus a bit of wash. Pretty good/ easy start for me (as time is also a factor). Then i started painting my slaughtermaster....and thats when things started to go horribly wrong.
First off i haven't had a great deal of experience with resin models, had a few but not that many, so just working out what was detail and what was un-removed flash was a job in itself.
Decided that i would try and get a greyish pale skin colour for this guy. I started painting him in a base coat of stormvermin fur then washed him in black was. Stood back and looked at it and thought "urgh, that's too dark" so highlighted him again in Stormvermin. Then for reasons known only to me i thought perhaps this would look more "fleshy" if i washed him in fleshshade....what a mess! On the up-side, i think this would work well for painting dark/ black skin as this is what he ended up looking like.
Have spent this morning trying to re-paint the whole thing in Astro' grey to try and bring him back from the brink and start again. This is the mess i have ended up with
Oh well, it's all a learning curve...
Neezy1309 Jan 2013
Strip him off with dettol and have another go. You cant get them all right
ChikenFlu09 Jan 2013
Dheneb Stone (Rakarth Flesh) makes a great grey base for skin, if you're looking for suggestions.
I personally wash it with a thin coat of purple then black and highlight with Dheneb Stone. Then finally put a Reikland Fleshshade over all of it.

^ all suggestions are really welcome, but dont be too upset if they arn't used streight away, i often end up trying to fight my way out of these mess-ups; it's the best way to learn "not what to do".
I wasn't around during the "grey Ogres" era, so something that may seem like second nature to everyone else is a big learning curve to me.
After painting this disaster with astro grey i have washed it with flesh (again) it looks passable now. I will try and highlight with a flesh shade and just try and save it from being a "bottom draw" model. (currently there are about 20+ models in the bottom draw...all destined to never get finished).
If i did have a question though, it would be; What do you do to "get out of" having to paint eyes? This is something i seem to be struggling with. Even with some ultra-fine brushes.
A picture of Klot the mess-up (slaughtermaster) is bound to follow. Oh, and does that Dettol thing work without melting the model? Not that i am likely to use it TBH, i have cats and i have always been told that Dettol is like Kryptonite to cats..........dont know where i heard that but it stuck.
ChikenFlu10 Jan 2013
Wasn't expecting you to use my method of flesh painting, just offering an insight to how some may do it. I also just recently discovered the "joys" of painting grey flesh haha.
As far as the eyes go, I just dab a bit of wash into the area and call it done, unless they're easy like Mournfang or Rhinox.

It works great on plastic and metal models, i use it all the time. I have never used it on the finecast models yet though. I just soak the model overnight then get a toothbrush on it the next day. Just make sure to use gloves as it gets very messy and sticky.

Mate, i will undoubtedly try the grey (purple) flesh thing and see how it comes out, but i wont use it on the slaughtermaster because i have already made a mess of it and need to get it sorted by fudging my way through it. I just didn't want you to think " i suggested to that guy how to do grey....and he completely ignored me!".
On the subject of eyes i will try this on this slaughtermaster as the eyes i have laready done (as seen in pics above) are total pants! They either look odd or look like the ogres have some form of cerebral based disability...which could go with the chaos winds/ Lazarghs tribe thing but was not exactly the look i was going for
Gnoblar_Herder14 Jan 2013
The Slaughtermaster Disaster
Picture the scene if you will; after totally failing to pull off the grey skin i originally wanted, i opted to get on with just doing lighter flesh for my SM. Also, knowing that my January workload/ pledges are now locked in i have tryed to get this SM done pretty quickly because i know i am mega slow at painting.
Finally the end was in sight! A few areas to touch up, some metal work to finish off, some white for fat around some of his meat adornment and i know he would be done.....but then, like the stealth bomb of doom my cat Sid sidles up to the desk...he takes a keen look at the desk and jumps, lands sliding across the desk and strikes the said SM; The world changes into slow motion as said SM bounces up into the air, twisting he plumets towards the floor, milli seconds pass before he hits; bounce 1 on his base...still intact, bounce 2 is a shoulder shot...still in one piece but...bounce 3 he strikes the ground with his saw like weapon. As the SM bounces on, his saw/ cleaver is left very much imbeded in the carpet. Time returns to it's normal pace...
So, as the world conspires against me to get my January pledges done my SM has had to undergo a "quick-fix" weapon wise. He now looks thus;
I am not actually confident that this guy (or my January stuff will ever get finished, let alone by the end of Jan!
Gnoblar_Herder21 Jan 2013
Finally, due to being unable to get into work today because of snow, i have finished my Slaughtermaster;
I was tempted to add lots more blood all over his weapon etc, but held back for fear of going over-the-top.
From behind;
i ended up adding some bits from a savage orc spru i had kicking around from a 40k Ork conversion. I think the other bit off his back was off a metal orc shaman. To be honest, he didnt turn out at all like i had wanted/ expected. I was hoping to have a much smoother paint job than he ended up with, to my mind it looks a bit "John Blanche" style...not that i am saying it is anywhere near his standard, but more that style. Less definition, if you get what i mean.
Bunged an orc skull on the base so one more pic;
like i said, he didn't turn out at all like i wanted, but at least he is done and out the way now. Looking at other models on the forum though, i am starting to worry a bit....i am starting to think that everyone else spends ages with the green stuff creating the most amazing conversions, whilst my guys just look a bit dull and boring in comparison. I am starting to think i need to go away and spend more time thinking about doing some models that are not "streight-out-the-box" and more interesting to look at.
The more i see of other peoples great works, the less and less i like my own
Gnoblar_Herder25 Jan 2013
Well, after what could be described as waaaay too long i have finally finished my leadies and the gnoblars. They have ended up looking like this;
As always any comments are always welcome...every little helps! I will post some more photo's (as i have a couple more) when my lappy/ photobucket starts working properly again (damn you server error 404)
Gnoblar_Herder26 Jan 2013
and now system errors have corrected themselves;
bit dodgy because of the flash ^, but it looks a bit different from the first shot like this.
one more of the Gnoblars;
so, any criticism (yeh, i'm guessing that's not spelt right...soz) comments, ideas or guidance would be greatly recieved. My own critique so far would be that there is a lack of cohesion with all the stuff i have done so far. This is something i will try and address over time. I think that not setteling on an actual theme for the army is my key stumbling block. When i can get my act together and come up with an idea, then i am sure this will be resolved
Gnoblar_Herder03 Feb 2013
Just started building a hunter model (for my Feb pledges), i haven't really done too much with green stuff so this is going to end up being a bit of an experiment to see if i can actually model anything. So far the hunter is comming along, but it is not without it's issues.
Firstly, i have decided to use an old rat ogre model i have kicking around. I cut off it's legs and banged some ogre legs on...which look a bit short. So i had to extend them a bit. Pictures of this monstrosity will follow.
As i dont have any current pictures to put up, i thought i could bung in some pictures of stuff that i have worked on semi recently.
Ork Battle wagon
Well, it's something to look at...not ogres, but something to look at
Gnoblar_Herder04 Feb 2013
Gnoblar_Herder12 Feb 2013
Finished my Hunter today (and not before time!). For this i used the top half of a rat ogre body and the bottom half of a bull. Basically sawed them both in half and then glued the two halves back together.
this presented me with a problem that could be only seen when the two halves were united; the legs on the bull model were way too short. The whole thing looked...well odd. This meant i had to extend the legs a bit with some green stuff. For most people that should be pretty easy, but i have not had much experience with green stuff, so it was a bit of a learning curve.
You can just about see in this photo how i had to "make" new feet for this guy. The join was pretty rubbish, so i put the fur cuffs on to hide the nastiness of the construction. I then basically bunged some ogre shoes on the bottom and created feet with green stuff.
The fur cloack thing worked out much better, and covered the skaven tattoo thing he had on his back.
The next problem i was faced with was his weapon. I though (the mother of all FU's) that i could just drill through both hands and bung a bar-b-q skewer through his hands and make a massive spear with that. However, i didn't bank on the rat ogres arms not being in alignment with each other. This meant that the spear would have to be bent to fit through both. It ended up as a one handed spear because of this.
The spears at the back, originally, should have had heads on them but after allot of trial and error i just couldn't make them fit/ stick, so opted for the "their stuck in the ground" option. Not what i wanted, but hey-ho.
Finally, the belly ended up having the strap on it because (yet again) mt green stuffing was so bad that when i actually stopped and looked at this guys gut it looked mis-shaped and odd. I bunged on the strap and buckles to kind of cover-up how bad the original belly was.
It was good practice for me, as i need to play with green stuff more to get better at it. (especially as i now have a butcher to do before the end of Feb!!!). Comment are always welcome if anyone has any (tips would be even better!).
Gnoblar_Herder28 Feb 2013
This month i have been so busy at work/ with toothache etc etc that i haven't really done too much but what i have done is this (pic heavy);
Gnoblar_Herder01 Apr 2013
Finally found time to bung a quick update to this. On the 5th March i was served a Section 21 (4)(a) eviction order as my Landlord has decided to sell the house i am living in.
I have spent the last month running around like an idiot trying to find somwhere to live and more over, some money to put down as a deposit. Worse still, this means i have had little time to do any stuff with my ogre army.
This is a real pain as i actually had a few units delivered this month ready for some conversion and painting. Sadly, they have been put streight in a box and shelved until i have somehwere to live.
I did manage to get a last game in at Warhammer World on sat 30th March before the ogres are bubble wrapped up and ready to be moved. I was facing a more experienced Tomb Kings player who managed to make light work of most of my units, though primarily because of some disasterous luck on my part. My Ironblaster blew up on turn 1 and managed to take out half a unit of leadies with it. Just not my month i guess.
If i can borrow a camera of a mate, then i will try and post up some WIP pictures of failed pledges etc before i am finally cast out into the night and made homeless!
Roll on May, things might pick up by then!
Entreri Bloodletter01 Apr 2013
Really like that butcher with his cleaving block, nice blood splatters too.
And that hunter is a nice change, looks like a true ogre hunting off the land and got a little mutated/misshaped because of it. Too much warpstone haha. Very nice
Gnoblar_Herder20 Apr 2013
Quick update; i am stuck in the middle of moving house, which is a nightmare, but have managed to squeeze in some painting;
(Counts as...) Mournfang Cav
When the moving is done, and my desk set up again, i have a shed load of stuff to get finished. So more pic's (on my camera, rather than this auto-focus nightnare) G_H

Gnoblar_Herder10 Jan 2014
Ha! Steal away jonnyandbex, steal away!
The idea for the giants trolly actually came from (dare I say it) the opening scene from the movie Trading Places. I had half a Giant spare because I bought a Chaos siege giant and you get a free top half (or only one bottom half depending on how you look at it...). I didn't really know what to do with it, then this idea came to mind....no need for legs!
If you really want to build one of these monstrosities then the best advice I can give is; measure it, pin it together, then measure it again (and again). As I progressed through making this guy everything seemed to "move" every time I added a new piece. Then stuff broke off, which was a nightmare. None-the-less, I am reasonably happy with the results.
I will happily build one of these things for anyone if you wish, but I would be much happier to see people have a go themselves...it's not that hard, and the sense of achievement when you have finished is worth the effort. G_H
Conogre10 Jan 2014

^ Ha! Honestly, it's not that hard to make a couple of sausages and bung them on the bottom of a giant!
Like I have said, I will happily make anyone an Ironblaster like this....I love doing anything with giants! Still think that everyone should have a go themselves though.
Today So today has been a nightmare work-wise, I am dredging through endless statements and evidence for a case on Monday, which takes hours and hours of time, and is exhausting......still, managed to get some base coats and a bit of wash on old Bit-deafo';
Sorry for the terrible pictures; it's late, I'm tired and the camera and I don't seem to be working on the same planet still, this is todays progress
And the blurry photo's (very much like my eyes atm)
Hope I can get some more painting in tomorrow to do this guy some more justice (after another day of compiling counter evidence for this industrial tribunal...and they only pay me £7.85 an hour....that's the real crime right there!!!) G_H

This is the best conversion I have seen on here so far. Mainly because that giant is priceless. Can't wait to see more, this guy is going to be a centrepiece for sure.
As for pay.. I get 11.75 CAD which is 6.55 GBP so hush :p
Then again I have no expenses besides school so that's a big difference.
And back to the model, seriously. I'm gonna have to get you to rock one of those for me someday. I'll look into the free stuff work but it's really not my forte.

As I have had some requests (not only from this forum, but also from friends etc) about how I built the Giant powered Ironblaster, I thought I would bung up a tutorial on how I built it (though from my point it seem's pretty self explanatory TBH).
It then occurred to me that rather than have 2 of these Giant Powered Ironblasters in my army (as much as I would love more Giant based models) I could build a second one and give it away to a member of the Ogre Stronghold forum.
So, this is what I have decided to do. At the end of the tutorial, I will give the finished product away to a member of the Ogre Stronghold. I will impose some form of competition that will be open to all so long as you meet two criteria;
1) you have made more than 10 posts on the Ogre Stronghold forum (as of the time this post goes up).
2) You have a Gnoblog on the Ogre Stronghold Forum.
The reason for these two criteria is pretty simple; I am happy to give away an Ironblaster Giant thing to someone who supports the Ogre Stronghold forum (the 10+ posts) and someone who is committed to telling others about their Ogre army build..be that painting/ building/ fluff/ games reports etc. To me this only seem's fair.
I would like to stress that I would be really stoked if everyone had a go at making their own Giant powered Ironblaster and that way you don't have to feel to bad about "winning" one.....but everyone likes something for free I guess.
The winner of this finished model will be decided jointly between myself and Randroid (for fairness). At the end of the tutorial I will pose some simple question and all answers will have to be posted to both me and Randroid via PM's.
This give-away will not start until the guide is finished and the question posed. A closing date for the give-away will be announced on this Gnoblog and the finished model will be sent to the winner after that date.
I hope this is ok with everyone. If not, tuff! That's the way it's going to be. G_H
Gnoblar_Herder12 Jan 2014
When making the Giant powered Ironblaster you will need to get a few bits and pieces together.
What you will need.
So, you will need to have; An Ironblaster Kit The top half of a Warhammer Giant (or a Warhammer Giant kit) Some plasticard (or a similar type of product) Some Green-stuff (or similar type of hardening putty) Tools to mould the putty A sharp knife (Exacto or similar) A pin drill (or something to make small holes) Some plastic glue and some Super glue Some cocktail sticks (or toothpicks) Some Lolly-pop sticks (or popsicle sticks) A few small staples (like from a stapler, the things that hold paper together) Some plastic cutters A bits box with (preferably) some Ogre barrels and an assortment of shields
The kitten in the picture is optional....in fact it is better if you can attempt to build this thing without the kitten. It proved to be more of a hindrance to me, rather than a help!
Ok, so with all this stuff amassed we are ready! G_H
Conogre13 Jan 2014

So I'm looking at a picture of an ogre army in the codex. It has a thundertusk with the guy holding the chain with the trap. Beside it stands a giant. What I noticed is that the chain lines up closely to the giants neck. I thought of you cuz you love giants but I thought that would look so awesome. Would look like they have him on a leash

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

I bow to the greatness of this thread.
I see many conversions that are good, and some that are great for fluff, and some that stand alone as wondrous works of art.
But this, seems to meet any and all criteria, fluff, playable, AWESOME, holy crap that is the best idea ever.
I again, bow to the greatness.

First; thank you for the kind words. The chain trap is a nice idea, I shall think about it. Nice to see you back JJ.
I am actually having the week from hell, which is typical when you have a "Giant powered Ironblaster" competition to get sorted....if I told you what has happened in the last two days, well, you wouldn't believe me!
So, we know what stuff we need, now lets get on with it! (oh, and there is an omission from the things you will need list; a small saw, soz) G_H
Gnoblar_Herder16 Jan 2014
Part 2
First let me say that when building stuff I tend to take the "lets just get on with it" line of thinking. Don't worry too much about little things that we can sort out with a lick of paint!
So first, lets glue together all the plastic bits. Those bits that we know are the basis for the Giant Ironblaster thing. They are thus;
(sorry the picture is a bit yellow. It was taken very late at night.)
Here we have the Ironblaster cart (which is pretty easy to put together), the cannon (which requires some minor attention to removing the spru attachments), the gunner (pah, just another ogre) and the top half of a giant. Don't worry too much about the spru attachment on his left shoulder...he will be losing that later (poor guy).
So with all the plastic bits assembled and glued, lets get onto the next step.
Gnoblar_Herder16 Jan 2014
Part 3
I am trying to do this as basically as I can so we can all have a go...if you feel like you are being taught to suck eggs...well sorry, but you are.
Lets concentrate on building the giants trolly (a la Trading Places).
For this we need;
The lolly pop sticks (or popsicle sticks) and a decent sharp knife (like the exacto one I have) and some plasticard. First cut a square of plasticard that is slightly less width than the Ironblaster base and about a third of it's length. About this size;
Next up we need to measure the lolly pop sticks (not with a tape measure...just bang them on the card and roughly chop them off near the edge...it's not a science fair) and cut them until you have enough bits the same length (ish) as the bit of plasticard.
As you can see here (ish) the cuts into the stick don't want to be too clean...rough splintered edges are our friend! Once all the bits are cut to length we will need to make the top edge of the stick a little less regimented in shape. So just shave some of it off. Then, take your knife and slash grooves (length-ways) into the stick, go with the grain. Why? Well this will make the stick more like wood. Yeh, I know it is wood, but this is modelling. Having wood doesn't mean it will look like wood when it's finished. It's the same kind of idea as why you paint slate and don't just leave it natural. (it looks crap!).
I'm not sure if you can see here, but the stick on the right is just a stick and the bits on the base are liberally slashed to infinity...it's that look we are going for.
Ok, well...um just super glue them on! I sealed the first giant trolly I made in PVA glue after the superglue dryed. Now, it's a two layer thing, so look along the edge, where the grooves on the wood meet the plasticard; cut some little notches out...just so the table edge hanger who wants to point out every fault with you conversion is fooled into "seeing" that the plasticard layer (from above and straight on) looks like layers of planks of wood. (then once this guy has picked up your model have him thrown out of the building!) That's the main body of the trolly made. Next up the wheels!
Gnoblar_Herder16 Jan 2014
Part 4
We have another little job to do before the wheels. If you have been modelling for a while then you may have had the privilege of buying a few Forge World models. If you have then you will no doubt have a bag full of these triangular bits of resin left over from the mould. I have found these to be most useful as "tank traps" in 40k, but today we want them to act as Giants guts.
Lets take a look;
So we need to find a couple of bits that fit into the carcass of the giant, a big (ish) one and a tiny one seem to work best. Why do we need them? Oh, well when we need to graft legs and a butt onto this Giant, well we need something to build onto. You can't stick green stuff onto thin air, so we need to stuff the giants body with something. To be honest, anything will actually do, but I have bags of these things laying around and they worked for me...but use what you like. Anyway, stuff the legless fool and glue those bits into place;
Leave that to dry, and onto wheels for that trolly.
Conogre16 Jan 2014
looking good so far! I didn't realize you were using the popsicle sticks for the wood on the cart, very interesting. Keep up the good work.

Part 5
The wheels for the cart caused a bit of a headache initially because I couldn't find anything to make them with. In the end I looked through my bits box and found I had allot of spare barrels. With this in mind I decided that (with some alteration) these would do the trick. Now if you are making one of these I would suggest having a good look about and finding something better. But this Is what I used. So first up gather some barrel bits;
You will also need the pin drill now. Oh, the blueberry muffin is optional (like the kitten earlier). Before gluing the barrel together, make I guide mark with a sharp knife in the centre of the barrel top (and bottom) then with the drill make a hole. This hole needs to be the same diameter as the cocktail stick we are using for the axel. I would love to say you need a 2mm drill bit or something like that...but in all honesty I just picked the one that looked the closest in size and used that.
Once the hole is drilled, then stick the barrel together with plastic glue and let it dry. After it's dry you will need to carefully slice each end of the barrel off thus making a wheel. I say carefully because these things are pretty weak. Part of this wheel is really just a thin slither of plastic. Cut the barrel on the inside of the metal rim that runs around the barrel model. If there are some scraggy bits; don't worry...we will just face them downwards and stick that bit to the base.
Next up, gently twist the "wheel" onto the cocktail stick. Make sure they are flush with the outside edges of the trolly;
Once the wheels are on the axel (stick) and flush with the edges of the trolly, superglue them to the bottom of the trolly (on the plasticard side. If the cocktail stick is not straight then a little greenstuff will help secure it to the bottom. Put the greenstuff on the inside edge of the axel though...so you wont see it if you hold the model up and look at it straight on.
Now glue the trolly onto the base, at the front with the planks running front to back...not side to side.
Well, that's the trolly done! If you did decide to use the Bluberry muffin, now is the time to sit back and eat it, may I suggest with a nice cup of tea or if you are feeling more adventurous why not try one of Randroids tasty beers; as described on his Gnoblog, Yum!
Gnoblar_Herder17 Jan 2014
A cautionary tale
If you do decide to pop the trolly on your desk and wander off for a tasty brew...be careful! We don't want anything to happen to all our hard work on that trolly. Make sure that your figure case is tightly shut.
There is nothing worse than returning to find that a gang of Naughty Gnoblars have taken your little masterpiece and are trying to use it as a makeshift oversized skateboard on impromptu ramps!
Naughty Gnoblars.....that's why they need herding! The drunken bums... G_H

Part 6
(I have missed a step, glue the cart part of the Ironblaster to the back of the base! Make sure it's as far back as you can get it without the wheels falling off the edge. Oh and while the glue dries prop it up with something, I used a sculpting tool, but a knife or what ever is to hand, so it is level and not leaning forward. The absence of the rhinox has to be compensated for here.)
After re-securing our Gnoblars in their army box it is time to turn to the (apparently) most daunting bit of this Ironblaster; Green Stuff/ The Giant.
Now, I am by no means an expert on Greenstuff. In fact if you look carefully you will find that I am always asking others on this forum for hints and tips on using the stuff. However, it's no good me trying to pretend that I haven't used it making parts of this model, so in will tell you what I did.
First up though, we have another job to do. The Giants' gun arm. Cut off two arms for the Giant. The more astute of you will have spotted that in the picture we have two left arms. This is very much intentional, we want two left arms!
The reason we want two left arms is; the right arm isn't quite in the right position, but more over we want the arm with the hole in for attaching shields. The right arm also has some sort of Dragon hide on it that extends over the cuff....as I am putting bandages on the ends of the arms (you could have hands if you wanted, but I like the idea of the hands having been literally worn off from years of pushing himself around) I want to be able to blend the bandages into the arm. So, two left arms.
First glue on the gun-arm. Yep it's pointing down so not really good for holding the cannon. It's ok because we are going to saw it off! Once the glue is dry saw the arm off with a hobby saw just at the edge of the shoulder muscle and ending up finishing just on the arm side of the arm-pit;
It does seem a bit pointless, but gluing makes a stronger bond further up the arm and it would look "un-natural" if we tried to mould the arm from the bicep.
Next up we need a little bit of the dreaded Greenstuff, about the amount in the picture is good. the important thing to remember with Greenstuff is you always need to use less than you think!
Now once the greenstuff is well and truly mixed together (keep kneading it until....well it's green!) pull a tiny bit off and put it in the hole on the arm-pit side (kind of wedging it up a bit). Now you could glue the arm at that angle, but greenstuff and plastic glue don't mix! I did glue the arm then put the blob of greenstuff back to support the arms position.
Next we need to start moulding the Greenstuff. The important thing is that we want the Greenstuff to mould over the join of the arm and blend it with the shoulder.
Cont....
Gnoblar_Herder21 Jan 2014
Part 6 cont...
Now this is how I blend Greenstuff. There is allot of different ideas about using Greenstuff, but all people tend to agree that tools and fingers need to be kept either wet or greased. For this you can use Vaseline, hand cream, water or even saliva. I am a saliva guy because you have a constant supply of it and its not too hard to lay your hands on some! I tend to keep my fingers wet to try and avoid fingerprints and it does mean you can put pressure on the Greenstuff and mould it out.
The other thing I use allot of is wet cocktail sticks or toothpicks. I find that just rolling a wet toothpick over the greenstuff rolls it out evenly and spreads it across the model.
Anyway, we need to do this all the way around this arm join. I rolled a really (like really!) thin sausage of Greenstuff and wrapped it around the arm then flattened it and smoothed it over the join with a wet cocktail stick.
After it was done I let it dry. Now, you can either do the bandage bit before or after you have done the arm join. I actually did this one before and the first model after. It doesn't appear to make much difference.
When doing the bandage just stuff the slot in the arm with Greenstuff until it's full and, with wet fingers, blend it into the bandages/ straps on the arm. then take a moulding tool or the back of your craft knife and make indentations that join up with the plastic models original bandages.
The other thing I have done in this picture is cover the bottom of this giant with Greenstuff so we are ready to put the legs on. The covering of the bottom of the giant just needs the greenstuff to cover the bottom, but make a bit of an indent for his but cheeks (this is a guide) and try and make sure that the greenstuff is level or better, much lower than the belly. You need more at the back (butt) than the front. This is because the legs and groin will build the front of the Giant up.
You can almost see the butt here and also the bandages. G_H
Gnoblar_Herder21 Jan 2014
Part 7
Next we need to start building this guys legs (or what he has of them). Now before I get going here I have a bit of a confession to make...it's not that serious, but in the process of building this I didn't manage to get as many photo's as I would have liked. the reason for this is simple; Every time I stopped moulding Greenstuff to take photo's, it took so long setting up the camera, taking photo's deleting them, taking them again...checking them etc that the greenstuff was starting to go off. Because of this I had to dispense taking as many photo's and get on with the job in hand.
For this I apologize.
The next step is to build this guy groin. (packet, pouch, meat n 2 veg, family jewels, dangle-berries, branch and boulders, twig and berries, family funbag etc etc you get the idea).
We need to get a ball of Greenstuff about the size of a marble. Roll this into a sort of triangular shape (with rounded edges) it needs to be flatter at the back this time as we want this bit at the front. For some idea of what this should look like before we get going, well, just look at the original piece that comes with the giant;
Similar, but not the same. But this is the kind of thing we want. We don't want this piece to extend further out than the belly (not unless this is going to be a very "gifted" giant). It needs to stay slightly to the right as we look at it, because the giant is going to be leaning to his left side (as we look at him) to have the cannon on his shoulder. As a guide keep his groin in-line with his belly button, but remember he is leaning to the left as we look at him.
Next are the legs. Now, I don't have any pictures of the legs. Sorry. But what we need to do is cut off a fair chunk of greenstuff and roll it into a sausage. This needs to be moulded onto his left side as we look at him. Don't worry too much about it being perfect it's just basically a sausage of greenstuff. Make sure it blends in with the butt area at the back (so no lines, although there is a way around join lines, but lets just avoid them) we can use the wet cocktail stick to achieve this. For length remember that generally this wants to be the same size as the distance from his shoulder to his elbow. Most of the human body is made up like this. Your hip to knee is about the same size as your upper or lower arm (ish..more lower with hand TBH) your foot is exactly the same size as your forearm (elbow to wrist) etc etc. We don't want our giant to look too disproportionate but it needn't be exact.
The other leg needs to be a bit larger than the first. The reason for this is just purely the angle he is sat at. At this point it may be worth checking that you can get a line of sight to the ogre gunner on the back of the cart.
Not put him on the cart? Oh, well glue him in place, right at the back not in the mounted place (foot in the floor) he is supposed to be in. The gun wont fit or will be pointing up in the air if the ogre is too far forward. Right at the back for gunner boy!
Look through the gun holding arm for line-of-sight. We want to see his gut plate through it (or at least his torso).
After blending the butt area again and checking line-of-sight (again and again people...it has to fit together) then run a few lines into his legs to make a patchwork pattern for his trousers. Not too many or it will look stupid. Just a few and not too deep either; we are not cutting them in, we just want to leave an impression.
Think about mould lines here. You know as well as I do that everything you miss like mould lines and bits of spru show up like a sore thumb when you undercoat the model. the same works here...you don't need to press too hard to make the impression of patchwork...trust me, like a missed spru stub these lines will show up like a beacon!
Lastly here, I have added a few stiches to the trousers. In the original I did this with some staples (from a stapler) that I cut in half and bent around the thinnest end of a sculpting tool. In this case the kitten seen earlier had ran off with the staples, so I had to use some electrical wire with the plastic coating stripped off. It's all the same thing, just bend them in half and stick them in...voila, stiches.
Next up will be adding the ends of the trousers and his stumps. Then all we have is the gunner and the gun and the Giants lash (leash..straps, whatever)

dtk; that's just all the GW paints and a few Vallejo ones. I guess that when laid out (as apposed to being in a big draw box thing) they just look like allot. I just assumed that everyone has lots of paints...kind of a tool of the trade I guess. Buy a couple every month and eventually you will have them all (and then, as in my case; just as you have all of them they will bring out an entirely new range...and you can start all over again!).

Gnoblar_Herder29 May 2014
It's been a very busy few days. Work is hectic, as always, but hobby-wise it would appear I have been a bit quiet.
This is mainly because I have been on a "building stuff" binge. With so much stuff to get through I decided to actually crack on and get everything built for a change rather than leaving it in boxes for months and eventually forgetting I even had it.
With this in mind, this is where I am with building stuff.
So, first we have a bunch of Maneaters. Pictured are my dwarf maneater (the headless guy with the barrel), my CD slave maneater (half painted), then an Araby maneater and the female maneater (both for a maneater group conversion...details later). We also have a Firebelly and another butcher (who may end up as another maneater).
Next up I have a scraplauncher and a second Ironblaster.
Here we have 3 Yhetees and a gorger. I really don't like the Yhetee models so am going to use these river trolls (models that I actually love) to replace them.
Also have built a Thundertusk and a Stonehorn;
Of course I do still have all this lot to build (6 Mournfang, another scraplauncher/ Ironblaster and my Arachnarock stonehorn, plus another battalion box).
And when I have finished all that I am going to treat myself to painting (yet another) one of these;
...but that's not all. Something else seems to have crept onto the desk...
the start of my greenskin horde, some black orcs and some orc boyz.
And that's what I have been upto (in between work)...painting these guys will commence soon.

Quick update;
I have now finished building my first two "special project" maneaters. They haven't turned out as well as I had hoped, but none-the-less the first two are done and ready for painting, which will start tomorrow (well, today now).
I have finished all the greenstuff work on the barrel carrying Maneater. He will be started on tomorrow too.
Started painting my Yhetees, my gorger and my butcher/ Maneater. Undercoat is drying on the second 'blaster, scrappy, Firebelly and 'tusk.
I will post up pictures of all this lot tomorrow. Still not built the Mournfang though...

WIP Pictures as promised;
First up the Gorger;
Butcher/ Maneater (this is honestly the easiest model I have ever had to paint, everyone should have one!);
Yhetees;
Greyback Yhetee;
All the above had had an base coat and a wash...so plenty to do!
Now the other WIPs, all undercoated Dwarf/ Maneater conversion thing; (not too shabby, the join in the beard worked better than I thought it would)
Firebelly (bog standard, we've seen it all before);
My Maneater's project...2 of 4 done so far;
There will be 4 of these guys when they are finished. They are supposed to represent characters from a TV show I used to watch (many years ago) when I was a kid. I didn't spend too much time on doing them as I have so much other stuff to do, so they could be better. It was the female maneater that gave me the idea as I contemplated what the hell to do with it to make it look better.
That's all for now.

Do you ever get that feeling that you have just too much hobby stuff going on at once and you may have bitten off more than you can chew?
NOT ME!
Wahooo! Lets see what arrived in the post over the last few days! Here is the beginning of my O&G army;
I thought I would centre the majority of the army around savage orcs. With that in mind I have got myself; some savage orc boyz, some SO boar boyz, a SO big boss, a SO shaman and a SO shaman on boar. But it's not all about savage orcs, so I have also got (by fair means or foul) some orc boyz, orc boyz in mini box x3, orc boar boyz, black orcs (we've already seen them...) and some forest goblin spider riders.
That's not counting my 120 night gobbo's plus the FW night goblin command and some squig riderz.
Nice. Of course I can't really justify starting work on any of this until I have finished my ogres. So with a whole day off I am going to shuffle off and get on with painting some more of the ogres.
Ahhhh, I do love this hobby!

I loved Monkey Magic and "the Water Margin" when I was a kid. As it turns out Monkey is actually the easiest and most boring model to do really. There is just so little to do with him. It's more paint than model.
Tripitaka is going to be a challenge though. He is supposed to be a young male monk (played in reality by a very attractive young woman). I have got the main body of the model sorted and I think I can pull off the hat...the face is more of a problem but I am thinking that the head (or face) off an ogryn will offer more options hopefully.
It is a work in progress though. I am pretty pleased at how the first two have turned out so far though. When they are painted I am sure they will at least "resemble" who they are supposed to be.
As always (and I don't say this enough...so sorry for that) thank you for the kind comments.

Gnoblar_Herder22 Jun 2014
Thanks for the kind comments guys. Steal away everyone...I am sure it was not my idea in the first place anyway.
I will post up some more pictures of the Ice troll because the "ice club" looks much better from behind than the front (I got the effect off better on the back).
To do the ice club thing I looked at the Yhetee picture in the OK army book, realized that I couldn't achieve the same effect if I dedicated the rest of my life to trying to do it and went off and did the best that I could as a mere mortal.
It was basically pretty easy to do the ice club. First I took some Ice blue (now called Lothern blue, but I used an old pot of ice blue) and watered it down to the same consistency as a wash.
I painted this wash into the recessed bits of the "stone" club. That is all the dips or indents. Whilst this was still wet (before it dryed) I painted around the edges of the ice blue with space wolves grey (now called Fenrisien grey, but again I used the old colour). Because the ice blue was still wet the two colours bled around the edges and kind of auto blended (not well, but auto was the key word here...).
When these two were dry I started to paint all the raised areas (around the edges of the blues) with Ulthuan Grey (I don't think it has an old equivalent). I used this because it is a bluey white. When that was done I drybrushed the highest raised areas with white (skull white or whatever the new equivalent is). When that was done I banged in some "spots" of white with a brush (a-la highlights) with white again. When this was done (and you can't see this in the picture I posted) I then painted the whole thing with GW gloss Varnish giving it a "wet" or melting effect. Job done.
Next up I will be finishing the other two Ice Trolls and finishing my Monkey Magic maneaters. It is worth mentioning that I have also started to build my O&G army now. I will start another Gnoblog for my thinling realms armies to try and keep them all separate and compartmentalized (this is for my own benefit). I mention this because if it looks like OK production has slowed down, it could be because the building of other "lesser" armies has taken precedence for a week or two.
Anyway, as always I will be posting up pictures of everything as I go along, so hopefully always something to look at be it Ogres, Orcs, Chaos Dwarfs or anything else I am messing around with.

Gnoblar_Herder24 Jun 2014
I honestly think that you can learn allot about yourself by having a Gnoblog.
As a last post in this thread on the subject of Orcs and Goblins i sat down to build a unit of Orcs. After clipping, trimming and gluing about 30 of them i noticed an old 40k nob in one of my draws of "random hobbiness".
Now for most people i am assuming this is just a passing moment in time that means nothing. But as i assembled the Orc boyz i started to think more and more about that Nob. Eventually i got him out the draw and took a good look at him.
He was one of those AoBR nobs. Rubbish pose, dubious weapons and virtually impossible to convert into anything worth having. Virtually.
I found myself an hour later gluing the final piece on this now "converted" Warboss and looked back on the hour of my life i have just wasted and came to the conclusion that my friends are right.
It doesn't matter what army i am currently building or what unit i am putting together; after about an hour my mind starts to wander onto the subject of conversions and i start thinking about how i can change the existing models i have into something else.
In this case the random Nob got his hand cut off, an axe added (after it was cut, shaved, re-modelled and pinned onto the arm) a club added in replacement of a stikk bomb, and a ogre club added to replace his big choppa.
I have no idea what spurned me on into doing this instead of concentrating on what i was supposed to be doing, but it happens everytime i sit down to do anything. Still on my desk at present is a half converted Ogre Pennywise the clown conversion to mention but one thing.
Like i said at the top, it is amazing what you learn about yourself when you write it down in a Gnoblog. Basically, as my friends have pointed out and i have refused to believe it until now i have learned the things that they have always said about me;

Test model for my Orcs is now done;
It is nothing special as they go, but I wanted to get the skin right as all the other Orcs will follow this theme. In the past I have probably painted over 400+ orks and for them I stuck with a traditional bog standard green skin. The darker green skin fits in well with the drab post apocalyptic look of 40k.
For fantasy I wanted my Orc army to have much brighter skin and this (after 2 tries) is the finished result. Only another couple of hundred of them to paint now!
G_H
Ogre_Matt26 Jun 2014
The skin looks great, if you're religious then Gork/Mork would be very proud of you. Especially looking forward to seeing your savage orks painted. Are you painting orc boyz first?
Matt
Gnoblar_Herder27 Jun 2014
Yes, I am painting all the non-vital chaff style units first. They will be the ones where spectacular paintjobs wont be required so should be easy to finish and quick to do.
The next wave of stuff will be the savage orcs because they are the meat n bones of this build.

Quick update;
I have had an unexpected half day off due to all the hearings I was supposed to be representing people at being cancelled.
This meant that I have had a whole afternoon to concentrate on painting. With this in mind I have made some more progress with my O&G army. I have decided to make movement trays with each unit so today was taken up mostly with doing that.
I will be posting pictures up of how I'm getting on with them....but not here. I will start another Gnoblog for these greenskins. It was always my intention to do so, but it would have been a bit boring starting a new Gnoblog with no pictures and nothing to show. So I have left it a bit until there is actually something to look at. It will also give me the opportunity explain why I have decided on this army as a second (or third) army and what I want to do with them.
If I can get some photo's taken in the couple of hours then I will start it today.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

The way things are going, it looks like I may need to dust off my half painted Yhetee's (river trolls) and get them back on the desk...now where did I put them?
Of course, I will also have to build a Gnoblar Hero just for giggles as he wont be able to join his brethren in the AoD...ah, such is life!
Tonight I took the plunge and after a very long hiatus decided (with the support of a couple of friends) to go down and check in at a local gaming group in my town.
I have known about the group for a pretty long time but never really managed to take the plunge and go and get involved or introduce myself. I didn't get a game in because quite frankly there were games (mostly 40k) going on already, but hopefully next week will be getting a decent fantasy game in.
The guys at the club all seemed like really nice people and it looks like it could be a good place to really get stuck into getting loads of games in. Also the timing should be hopefully good because despite the enthusiasm for 40k it could be just in time for the new rule book to come out and hopefully create a new buzz for some serious Ogre/ fantasy action.

It's funny, fantasy to me seems to be gaining on 40k in popularity in my area, most people that play both think the game is more fun, but are put off by how little attention GW pays to it compared to 40k. So, definitely take the plunge at your store, I recently did and found that many players are interested in fantasy, some even have armies because they love the models and the idea, but no one vocalizes it and it stays on the shelf.

Sounds great, buddy! A good gaming group is the next best thing to a gamer after the models and an understanding significant other I've got an issue after the move, that I'm not living as close to my usual gaming group anymore. Granted, getting to Helsinki isn't that big of a problem, but transporting large armies for a game of Apocalypse or a Fantasy mega battle (as we like to call it) is somewhat of an issue. I'm quite fed up with the GW carry cases, despite owning several of them. Not exactly transport friendly after the first one you're carrying Need to get that problem sorted out asap after things calm down and all the boxes are unpacked
Also, the gaming enthusiasm in the group has taken a few hits as well. Or more precisely, the time the guys have to allocate to gaming. One of the guys recently had a second child, and despite her being cute and adorable, the baby does take a large amount of time. And she tries to eat the miniatures, which is a no-no
As for the 40k/FB thing, a new rulebook will help, but also a campaign or something usually does the trick as well. Campaigns unfortunately do require quite a lot of input from the GM, but are very rewarding. Last time I took part in a campaign resulted in me painting roughly 3k of Blood Angels in a month Will post pictures once I get around to finding out which box the army is hidden in

Apart from starting work on my Ice trolls I have also been starting my Gnoblar Hero for the competition (not that I am entering, but when in Rome...).
So far I have managed to back a base together for him and have given it a few coats of paint and wash to get it going.
This is the front side;
and this is the back;
Actually as we speak the base is just drying off after it's last wash n drybrush. Now all I need to do is find a Gnoblar Hero suitable enough to go aloft this thing!
It's been a learning curve doing the base (which is always good) because it is the first time I have added the tree roots effect into a base. It looks a bit crass and the painting looks a bit blocky in the picture but "up close and personal" it's not too bad. It took a couple of goes to get it to look the way I wanted it to, but so far so good. All the base needs now is some snow (to fit in with the rest of the army) and some assorted dead grass slotted in here and there.
The Gnoblar is more of a worry because although I have loads of them I want this one to look a little different and Ironically I can't find a base model to make him from.
I will post up some pictures of base and Gnoblar as soon as he is sourced and assembled.
In other news I have done some layering on the second of my 3 river trolls. Pictures will follow. G_H

I have the same question about the roots, that is a look I really like and would like to try myself!
Gnoblar_Herder10 Aug 2014
Zolas; Sadly i didn't take stage by stage photo's...simply because it actually took about 10 mins to make. Seriously, there is no real trick to this at all, anyone (no i really mean anyone) can do this is the time it takes for the British soap operas to start and finish!
Zolas + Havoc; arhhh the roots. I have tried many things over time, garden wire, fuse wire, railway hobby scenic's, string etc the list goes on.
In the end i decided to use...well, roots. After sitting (lazily) watching the Mrs doing some gardening i noticed we have an abundance of these god awful weeds that have a mass of roots. The more i looked at this monstrosity the more it occurred to me that nothing would look more rooty on a base than roots. (bit like the joke whats sticky? A stick).
Over a couple of months i experimented with painting them and messing about with them to try and preserve them and stop them from going moldy or shriveling up. In the end the thing that worked was coating them in PVA glue to seal them.
I am at work at present on a 26hr shift, but if you would like when i get home tomorrow i can post up pictures of the weed, the roots, how i covered them and how i made the base.
i dont think i said what the base was made of....if not, it's just toilet paper. plain and simple.
I will post up a guide and pictures tomorrow if you want, but really it's so easy and is so quick to do i have often wondered why i dont do more bases like this....just plain lazy i guess.

Lets make a base fit for a Gnoblar hero then!
First up we need to do some gardening!
So, what and which are these weed roots we need to make a model? I wish I could tell you the Latin names and all that but I can't. So we are going to call them "Mr Muddy" and "Dr Desert".
First up Dr Desert. So this is what Dr desert looks like;
Obviously this is the plant bit, not the root, duh! So it looks a bit like a mini palm tree; so it would work great for Lizardmen maybe. Anyway, we are not interested in the plant bit, where is that root?
There it is! The roots are the yellow looking bit. We are calling this one Dr Desert because it grows in stoney ground with little soil. This is weed number one.
Weed number two is my favourite. It is such a versatile beast (well in the garden anyway). Here he is, Mr Muddy;
look at them roots! He is a veritable monster! Not convinced? The take a look at this bad boy?
Tiny plant massive root. Anyway, this is not gardening hour...lets get on! So this is the plant with the best roots for basing. No idea what it is called.
Incidentally, whilst photographing this bad boy my Mrs came home and went booloo at me for digging up the garden "for them bloody models" so I ended up keeping the peace by digging the whole veg box! The things I do for you guys...
Ok we have the weed. The next thing we need to do is wash that bad boy (as in get all the mud off) and let it dry out. It may take a day, but that will give you time to finish off painting that unfinished model you keep meaning to get done.
Next up, we need to seal the root to stop it rotting. Here we have a picture of Dr Desert being "soaked".
Basically just get a take-away tray put some PVA glue in it and get them roots covered! Then take the thing outside and flick off any excess glue.
I advise doing this out of the sight of any loved ones. Having said that PVA glue dry's clear and no one will know about the mess you have made if you just don't tell them! Works for me.
Now leave that root to dry for a day or two.
That's the prelim... now for making the base G_H
Gnoblar_Herder11 Aug 2014
So, lets make that base.
What do we need? Here is our list;
We need bog roll (toilet paper) and PVA Glue. Oh, we could use some other stuff...but primarily that is about it. Ah, and the root of course...duh!
Here is a picture of stuff that will come in useful;
So, we have PVA glue, toilet paper, slate, roots, basing material such as sand or stones and a sharp tool. Any sharp thing will do; pencil, toothpick makes no odds.
Right lets get on with it. Get your base and some toilet paper; cover the toilet paper with some PVA glue.
This will get messy so be warned. Screw that bit of paper up into a ball/ lump and bang it onto the base.
^thus. Now poke it with a sharp implement. Poke it allot, what we are looking for here is it to turn into pulp...not a lump of paper covered in glue but total sloppy pulp (ok, not too sloppy, but more pulp than paper).
Cummon stab that sucker!
After a good stabbing it should look less like paper and more like pulp. Next up grab some slate (this is optional) and bang it on top of your pulp.
Stick in some of the dried root you have. Bury that root into the pulp to make it look like it is coming out the ground.
Next; more pulp and more roots!
Just keep going until you are happy. You can see the bit of dried root I am using pictured above...the bit held in the peg, lets just bung it all in and call it a tree and see what happens!?
Yep, not too shabby! It could work (so far this has taken 10 mins to build if that!). Ok next up lets base this sucker then leave it to dry. So take some sand and stones or whatever you like to base stuff with (I would really advise a good variety here; lots of different textures and sizes of stones, sand and rocks) and cover the wet paper with the stuff. Is it drying? Well then you have taken too long faffing about with it; just add more glue to it or more wet paper if you like. Anyway, get the basing stuff tipped onto it thus;
I'd love to say this is some genius idea that takes some real skill and dedication from years of practice and skill; balls! It's a piece of p**s! Anyone can do it and you all should! Don't look at them golden daemon guys and think I wish I could do that...
...just buy some bog roll and do it guys! It is soooooo easy, I promise you.
All you need to do is leave this bad boy to dry for a day or two, then spray it black and paint that bad boy. Lots of washes work well for a base with loads of stones in it. And vary the base colour in places as earth is all different colours.
Like I said at the top of this; this is so easy that you should all give it a try! Enough from me, go make bases people!

Thank you so much guys. Not that I really see this as much of an achievement, it really is a simple thing to do.
I honestly believe that anything can be made from toilet paper and PVA glue; literally anything! (well maybe not models...having said that...maybe...). It is certainly good for making all kinds of terrain such as this base kind of thing, but also you can make ruined walls, bunkers, volcanos, caves the list just goes on.
I am also a massive believer of keeping things simple. I don't think it ever helps anyone if you give it the big "take your expensive silicone tool and the special purchase material; then using your years of experience, take your special paint brush or airbrush and blend the gold standard paint before adding the gold-dust...blah blah" The simplest things are often the best. Also, I come form the pre-money making GW era, where issues of WD told you how to make stuff on the cheap. The days long before you had to buy a kit to make a castle. Believe it or not (and I am speaking to the younger readers here) there was a time when WD actually told you how to make stuff for virtually free.
My greatest triumph of these days was taking the ball-cock out of the toilet to make a hot-air balloon for my fantasy orcs. It was a long time ago.
Anyway, I really hope ( a bit like the whole Giant powered Ironblaster/ greenstuff thing) that people just have a go at making stuff. It is so easy and you really should give it a try. Like Greenstuff if you never give it a go you will never know what you can achieve.
Finally, as for adding the "tutorial" to the butchers cauldron; it would seem a bit snide if I did it. I will leave that to someone else. In my book, no-one likes a smart arse, so it's not really my place to do that; but thank you for suggesting it.
Now as a hobby update; I ended up having to work on Wednesday night so I didn't get to go to the club I have just joined. This means I am still yet to "face-off" Rorhammers Woodies, but the time is coming! Hopefully next week we can get a decent game in (fingers crossed).
In other news I am still working on the River trolls; hopefully I will manage to finish them before the end of August. I am very nearly finished doing my Gnoblar Hero (s) and pictures of this guy (s) will be up this weekend.
Bizarrely (but quite typically of me) I have also put a brush to one of my unfinished giants. Who knows why...I am nothing if not inconsistent with painting. He is looking pretty good so pictures of this "off the righteous path" model will also be posted.
Enough from me today. I would like to just add this; The beauty of having a Gnoblog and posting stuff up on them is that the comments that people make and the views that they get often give people the inspiration to continue on with their army and do more great work. This is certainly the case with me and I can't thank everyone enough for all the kind comments that people make. Gnoblogs are great and I can't advocate doing one enough.
Right, less blather best get on with that Gnoblar Hero... be good people G_H

What if, just what if, we would introduce this kind of things in the Bellower? Ok I have to admit, this is probably already on the todo -list for Bellower so it's not a new idea. But this is indeed one thing that people always love. 'How to build feast table from icecreamsticks' or like you said 'How to make terrain from toilet paper'.. 'Creating runic stones/altars from daily garbage' etc.

It's a great idea Pirk. We are still contemplating the re-vamp of the Bellower. The main sticking point for everyone (if I can say this) is the format it should take to drive it on into the future and how we would assign responsibility for ensuring it's longevity. It is still a work-in-progress.

Quick update, with some appallingly bad photo's (sorry about that), of what I have been messing about with this weekend;
first up the River Trolls; (blurred and with no flash to try and catch the "real" colour)
And with the flash;
these guys have actually been a nightmare to do. I honestly thought they would be a real pleasure to paint as they are such lovely characterful models, but they have just been one hassel after another. Still, they will soon be done.
Also I have done something with the "other" Gnoblar Hero base that I made;
Started messing about with another Gnoblar Hero...I think I may like this little fella better than the last one...then again, the other guy does have his charms.
Lastly, and for no reason known to anyone (not even me...) I have been adding some paint to an old giant I never finished. So far this bubo covered monstrosity is looking like this;
Sorry about the cruddy photo's. Sadly it's hard to see that I have tried to paint tiny veins coming of the giants bubo's...when the light is better I will try and take some better pictures.
Anyway, that's me for today.

TBH mate they have been a real pain in the butt!
If you ignore the fact that they are an absolute pain to paint (they are like a giant or plain ogre in the respect that there is loads of flesh to paint) then getting to the body parts (like the belly behind the guy holding the fish) is harder than pushing a brick through a button-hole.
The other problem I have had with them is that these are the first guys I have undercoated white for years. In itself that shouldn't be a problem but somehow it is. We used to say that undercoating white was for brightly coloured models, which I think makes sense.
In these guys cases every time I have tried to drybrush anything (like the base or the fins on their backs) all it has done is scrape off the paint layer and leave them with white undercoat spots everywhere. You can see this in the photo's. I have painted the bases for these guys about 4 times and still there is white popping through.
Obviously, the last problem is one of my own making, but none-the-less it's still been a pain in the butt hassle to sort.
I will be glad when they are finished because in-spite of them being great looking models they have been nothing but a pain. And I have so much other stuff I could be painting.... (yeh, too much mate! you need to get a grip on your projects mate and prioritize! There is 8,000pts of Chaos Dwarfs that need some love, let alone all them Orcs... )
G_H
SeBM18 Aug 2014
That is weird about the white primer. I prime pretty much every Ogre white since that what I learned when I took my masterclass painting class by Mathieu Fontaine. Is it possible that your undercoat is a bit greasy? What I have found out with white primer is that the undercoat needs to be thin. When I coat my ogres, the coat is almost dusty, you can see grey through the white coat.
Also, before drybrushing, I always do a thin layer using my wet palette to make sure the area will hold onto the drybrush.
Not sure that helped but it was worth a shot!

Yeh, right! They didn't listen when I asked them if they were putting a mounted Tyrant in the book, or when I asked for some more characters. They totally ignored me when I said they should bring back Brough the Slavelord and they totally blanked my idea for doing a "special" troops unit.
Anyway, back to business. Today (or tonight) I have made the decision to bin off the River Trolls. It is very rarely that I totally give up on painting something, in fact it has only ever happened once. But where these guys go I am throwing the towel in. They wont be seeing another minute of my time, life is just too short.
Obviously there is a reason for this which I mentioned above, but I will expand on that with some pictures to illustrate why I have given up on them.
As I said above, the white undercoat spray (a bog standard GW one) seems to be so prevalent that regardless of how many times I paint these models the white seems to creep back through. Lets take a look at a picture to illustrate.
So, what we are looking at here is a close up shot of what I met when I set down to do another night on these guys. If you look at the base there you can see the pale/ white has come through yet again on the base. This is inspite of the fact that these bases have been painted 4 times (2 lots of basecoat and 2 drybrushes) and washed twice.
Now in itself that is not the end of the world; after all I can cover it with snow in-line with the rest of the army. Much more troubling is the white coming back through on the scales and spines.
If you look at the spines down the back of the guy on the right hand side you can see the tips of these spines has a white dot on the end (very reminiscent of when we all had to paint metal models and the paint virtually fell off). Again this is not the end of the world until you understand that I flooded them with paint yesterday; almost to the point that they looked stupid. Lets take a look at another picture.
If you look at these guys from this angle you can see on both models that at the end of the scales all the tips of them are yet again white. This is after I have re-painted all the mid green/blue on them to get rid of this and then highlight them again. I can't really repeat that because they are starting to lose the detail of the scales.
Now, I have no idea why this is happening and it has never happened to me before.
But, as I sat down to crack on with them tonight and saw that flooding the spines (well painting them ridiculously heavily yesterday) had done absolutely squat to cover the models, I made the decision to bin them off as a bad job.
I am really sorry to all those people who were hoping to see them finished; it aint' never gunna' happen!
I did think briefly that I would just drybrush them with PVA glue and cover them with snow flock...but that idea quickly faded as in reality it's just bodging something up to get it finished, which is pointless.
Thankfully no one uses Yhetees much....which is good because I obviously wont be!
Right, what else can I paint now....

Just went through your blog to catch up and all I can say is WOW
Your work is absolutely amazing, I love the way your ogre army is progressing, and your orks/orcs army/
Your conversion work is the best I have seen, especially the converted ironblaster with the giant is awesome.
Keep up the good work bud, will definitely be keeping a watch on this blog as I might be able to use some of your artistic talent in my army one day.
What an inspiration.
Cheers,
Gav.
Gnoblar_Herder26 Aug 2014
Thanks Gav, this is very kind of you to say. I have been a bit slack recently updating, I shall endeavour to change that if I get a chance tomorrow.
Actually I looked back through some of my posts and the one thing that stood out to me was the amount of projects I have started...but no evidence of them ever being finished. This is something I shall have to change. I really need to revisit some of my unfinished stuff and make more effort to get it done.
Thanks for the kind words though mate.

I have had this problem before, but it's not exclusive to white primer or GW. It's the paint rubbing off, probably as you handle the models. I usually experience this on the tips of miniature hands or the bottoms of bases as you hold them, and I could totally see it happening here. What I do is do a very deliberate job of making sure all the dots are touched up, and then very carefully hit it with a light spray of Matte Varnish. Just enough to seal it and protect those parts, you don't want to over do it, quick spray (and careful not to hit a part a second time, that's what causes the dull, frosted look). Obviously do not do this until you are absolutely sure you are done with it in every way, and be careful not to touch the questionable spots. And, test out the finish before hand on some old models you don't care about, make sure you are getting a good look, because you can ruin models with the wrong finish. The models otherwise look too good to be such a source of frustration.

An update/ statement
I was speaking to a friend today and we touched on some points that made me think I need to put some info into my Gnoblog to assert my position on my OK army.
Quite simply the conversation went like this (ish);
I was talking about what an honour it was to be one of the Stronghold Guard and my friend ( I think that would be Buddy if in the USA ) said "but you don't play your ogres as much as you used to or could, so doesn't it seem a bit snide to be telling other people (especially new members) to start Gnoblogs and play Ogres if you don't use them as often as you could?"
The simple answer to this is no. That's NO, absolutely not!
Firstly, Ogres are my absolutely favourite army. They are awesome! Like totally awesome. Not just for their play style or the models but because I see them as a blank canvas on which any (no, I mean any) theme can be applied. If you want Iceland hunters theme; boom! It's there. Want them to be aligned with Chaos...again, boom! They are on the money. Want them to be a courtroom of lawyers (see LawGnome's Gnoblog) Boom! we are there! or a bunch of Orcogres (see RJ_Payne's Gnoblog) again, bang; there they are!
Ogres are the most versatile army that I can see for adding your own personality and identity on. More over than any other army.
"but you don't play yours as much..." Well, this may be true. But that is not because I don't love them. Not a bit of it! I have been playing with the OK for a while now and it is really nice to have another army to play around with too to get my brain into gear and make me think of some other playing style.
Also, after my departure from 40k (a 10,000pt + Ork army) there was a bit of a void from playing games. I decided to start to diversify into other games systems and so far am looking at playing KoW and Malifaux to name but a couple. This does not detract from my love of the OK...it's just nice to be able to play something different for variety. Lets face it; KoW and Malifaux can't be any more different from WFB can they? Totally different dynamics and game play. So variety in my book.
"but you don't post as many updates on your OK army as you used to, but you are telling others to do so?". Well duh! Of course I am! I love seeing other peoples work when it comes to OK. There is less activity from my Gnoblog when it comes to OK quite simply because I have already made the BSB, Firebelly, Slaughtermaster, Butchers, leadies, MF Cav etc. What else do you want me to do?
Once it is done, well it is done until I come up with a new theme or model that will fit the bill and is worth showing. Where does my inspiration come from? Well; new members Gnoblogs as it happens!
The ideas that new members come up with never cease to amaze me and some of the models and sculpting are awesome. I could spend all day, everyday just looking at the awesome work that people on the OS come up with each time I log in. Of course I want new members to post up progress of their work; it inspires me to add another maneater or another unit to my army and keeps my own OK army as a developing force ready to take on the Warhammer world.
Do I play other armies? Well, yes. Of course I do! What about other systems? Um...yes, of course. I have been playing games of this vein for over 20 years so of course I play games that aren't WFB. I mean DUH!
So, where does this leave me? Well, I do need to update my Gnoblog. I have some new OK models that I am working on. Next up; my Firebelly (he is actually coming on ok, pictures soon) and some Maneaters.
My O&G Gnoblog; I have been working on some Squigs...awkward buggers to paint, but I will post pictures.
KoW; I need to put some serious work into my Abyssal Dwarf army here; warmachines are on the cards here.
Others? ; Yep! Work has started on my Malifaux crew. I will be posting pictures of my version of "teddy", for my Neverborn gang, within the next few days.
But if all these other projects where to fade, or I was asked to choose only one system and army; well it would be my ogres, because quite frankly I love them. They are the cream of the crop!
So this is why I will always say; well done choosing OK as your army and please start a Gnoblog; we all love seeing an army's inception taking place. Because quite frankly I do love seeing an OK army taking shape.
I will be updating my Gnoblog with some new pictures soon (as in tomorrow or the day after) until then...be good people
peace love chaos G_H

Let it all out Borther! Personally there is not many people who can say they have 2 Gnoblogs for a start. You do!
Sadly there is a fair amount of people who do lack the time to do the things they love for many reasons such as kids work and other real life things that crop along. Not everyone is fortunate in there life for such things as full devotion to their hobby. That said when you get those spare moments I think spending it encouraging other people to update Gnoblogs and give advice to help them develope is a very worthy use of that time!
As for you not updating simply not true! Why theres a Gnoblar Hero of yours on an awesome base which imcludes tutorial kind provided by request! That was like 2 weeks ago.
Either way looking forward to seeing some more stuff. The KOW abbysal Dwarfs should prove interesting indeed.
Chin up buddy.
Kind regards Zolas.

Being an Ogre lover and member of the Stronghold does not require a constant attention and dedicated playtime to only the Ogre Kingdoms army in WHFB! Being an Ogre lover is something you just are... and wandering to different models and games is part of being a Maneater anyway. Got to see whats out there that you can bring back to the tribes!

Closer shot of veins on his belly, side and arms
And lastly we have "Teddy" from Malifaux;
And there we have it all/ any comments are always welcome

Loving that firebelly! I really must get my hands on one of them... Do you plan to do any OSL on it? (Not that it needs it mind, it looks great as it is so far )
Ogres W/L/D : 0/0/0
Gnoblar_Herder02 Sep 2014
Joex48; no is the simple answer. Back in the days when I played 40k I did try and do some OSL but it never quite worked the way I wanted it too. With the Firebelly I think I will avoid it purely because I am not that good at it and it may cock-up the whole model.
Not that this Firebelly hasn't been slightly experimental in his own way. I have been working on getting the smoke right (which isn't as obvious in these close-up shots as it has been cut off a bit) but I have also been practicing doing tattoo's. I have always avoided the latter because, to me, they never look very realistic; more like pictures painted onto skin rather than tattoo's if that makes sense.
The smoke has come out pretty well so far, I will take another picture to try and show that more.
thanks for the comments though.

I agree with what you say about tattoos on models but you're fire belly ones look really good. I think the key is to have the colour slightly 'washed out' and a little 'fuzzy' around the edges if you see what I mean! I think our obsession with fine detail and precision often leads to some things - such as tattoos - being too bright and clean. I'd love to know how you did them

A random rant
I will delete this post in 24hrs. I just need to rant a bit.
After me and a couple of friends decided to start playing Malifaux I took the (now unwise decision) to join the Wyrd miniatures forum.
After following the usual crud you have to follow to join forums I was in. Then I got messages saying you cannot post in this forum and you cannot start new topics in this forum.
Odd. So I re-checked all the verification e-mails and followed several links (mostly broken on their part) to try and see what the problem was. then I slept. Then I did all the above again. Not the joining, because of course "that e-mail address already exists".
Then I decided to contact the admin to say this account isn't working. Unfortunately I can't do that because I cant post anything. So after 3 hours of being re-directed in circles I gave up. I cannot convey how mad I am. Not even pictorially. If a Wyrd's website was a person, then they would be in hospital now eating through a straw.
there is a lesson here though; don't bother joining other forums...they all suck and don't work properly.
So does anyone know anything about Malifaux as it would appear that I am not going to learn much from the Wyrd forum I cant post anything on?

Leave the rant up! i feel for you. This sort of thing makes my rageometer explode instantly, and want to throw my pc out of the window (without opening it first).
On a more helpful note, i have just picked up my first malifaux crew and having my first game tomorrow. I looked a lot at a website called "pullmyfinger". Its not a poor attempt at a joke from me, just google it and you get loads and loads of info on the malifaux world.

And now we have calmed down a bit....
lets get back to business (bloody Wyrd forum...) Villan_Ogre; So tattoo's. Well I have to say I am no expert on this. The firebelly was my first attempt and he is not finished yet, but this is how I did him.
First off I painted my skin base coat and washed it. Then I took a really dark blue, I think it was Dark Reaper from the GW range. I used blue because tattoo's are not truly black and I figured that blue would give them that "old" look. The next step for me was to take my first layer colour, which in my case is Cadian fleshtone and painted over the top of the tattoos as if they weren't there.
Now, the Cadian Fleshtone I have is pretty watery so I think that helps. I would suggest watering it down a bit if the paint is thick. In my case the CF is so watery that if you paint a thin layer on then you can still see through it. This is ideal for this tattoo thing as I did still want to see the design through the fleshtone.
After this I washed the skin again with Reikland fleshshade and then I highlighted the CF again as I normally would just avoiding the tattoo areas this time.
That is all I have done so far on this guy. But that was how I did this. I have to say that I made some errors when doing the design on his back as I tried to make it symmetrical then realised he is bent at an angle and one side of his body is obscured which throws the symmetry out. His chest is supposed to have the Maw symbol on it. I am hoping to touch that up a bit later as it is not that clear at present.

Last night I ventured out to the local club and played my first game of Kings of War (from Mantic) using my ogres.
There are two things to say about this. Firstly that it took me under 3 mins to draw up a 1000pt list (which for me is miraculous) as the information needed to compile a list for KoW is vastly reduced in comparison to WFB. The second thing to say is, by about turn 3, I had learnt pretty much all of the rules. It is such an easy game to get to grips with and is vastly simpler that WFB.
Now, this could be seen as a bad thing as being so simple to play there is not all the excitement of spending hours studying buffs, magic items and other army specific options. On the other hand if playing time is ever a factor then having the ability to play a game that is so simple to jump into with almost no knowledge is a positive.
I can only heartily recommend KoW as it is something that is so simple to pick up and play that it actually takes less time to play than some dubious card based games. For the minor outlay of the rule book it is well worth having a go. Most of your WFB armies (Ogres, Chaos Dwarves, Dwarves, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, Goblins and undead) can be proxied so there is no need to buy models to get going.
Back in Gnoblar towers the paint desk has seen the return of an old and hated model. I have decided that this month I am going to re look at painting my (widely hated) BSB for my September painting pledge.
This monstrosity was made about a year or so ago and I was far from happy with him. This was a view that was greatly shared by most other people so after some consideration he was placed in the deep dark recess of my sock draw (the oubliette of toe-rags) and left to slowly die.
The last time we saw this monstrosity he looked like this (seen here flanked by other banner men);
Urgh! Just looking at this thing makes me feel sick. Anyway, I decided it is no good leaving him the "sock draw of doom" for all eternity and to liberate him for some more painting.
There must be something I can do with this ugly numpty!
So, that is what is on the desk at Gnoblar towers. Lets see what I can do with him. A year on and I should be slightly better at painting so there must be light at the end of this (very dark) tunnel for this guy.

Had to catch up on a little bit here is I seem to have missed some important stuff!
Firstly, the Firebelly looks brilliant. I know it's a WIP but you've already made the flame look easy which I am baffled by. Secondly, that teddy miniature is truly awesome!!!!! Thirdly, yes that BSB needs some work haha. I definitely wouldn't say I hate him at all, but he's just not at the same standard as everything else I've seen you do. Regarding other forums: stick to lurking there. I've found that arguments break out on every single thread and the idea of staying on topic is just impossible. Not naming any forums because I'm a professional (cough**warseer**cough), but he atmosphere found here is much more supportive, nourishing and inspiring than any other I've looked at; and there's been no lack of looking haha.
Finally on your rant regarding you being a moderator. What each forum requires of it's mods may be different. What is required here are the skills and talents you naturally or appear to have. You are highly active on the forum which is a plus. You always post positively and remind others to do so, you manage the forum well and move threads etc, you have vast experience with the army is dedicated to, you also have plenty of experience with other armies in the game system in order to offer advice on a multitude of topics, you also play various other games (providing the same help), and you maintain a wonderful gnoblog (or two) so that other ogres can see what you're up to and keep up to date with you. You have also been highly active in bringing about the changes that are making the OS a more busy bustling place it is today.
So to your 'buddy' and his criticisms, let them stay across the pond. BB

I think the BSB is great, admittedly not as good as the flankers, but still very good! You don't give yourself enough credit! I really like the painting on the top banner (I love the look of the faces screaming through), but I think my only gripe, that detracts from it all, is the roughness of the banners underneath (probably more noticeable in the black one I think) the painting is top notch, as always, though!

I have to agree with joex48 here. I have seen some of your other work looking much better, but the bsb is still good. as Joex48 said the banner at the top looks great give yourself the credit
Also i played my first game of malifaux today, i thoroughly enjoyed it, need to get a better grasp of some of the rules, but the systems works very well and is quite fast paced.
As a little blast from the not too distant past, what happened to your chaos dwarfs? i was enjoying the work done there and was hoping to see a force in all its glory. Are they still on the table? or have they been relegated to the sock drawer?

Hey mate
I think the general design of your BSB is good, but I think it is the green stuff banners that are letting it down. My advice would be to keep the Ogre as is, but start again with the back banner. I would look at either using some spare banner and combining them or using your inmproved green stuff skills to have another crack at making them. Personally I think you could try chasing improvement with paint, but ultimately will feel dissapointed as the basic shape of the banners is the issue.
Hope the advice helps.
My Armies: Empire Ogres
Gnoblar_Herder04 Sep 2014
Wow, where to start?
Thanks BB, the firebelly is nearer completion now, I need to do more photo's and get them up. Teddy was quite amusing to paint and is almost finished now too. Sadly I am still awaiting delivery of the rest of my Malifaux crew so can't crack on with them yet. I think the criticism from said friend was more a "why do you still go on about ogres when you don't play them that much?". This is a trend I am now changing due to; using them for KoW and the new Nagash book injecting some life into Fantasy.
JoS; I can't wait to give Malifaux a go. I do enjoy trying new systems and I have thought about playing Malifaux many times just because some of the mini's look awesome. The Chaos Dwarves will be making a return really soon as I need to get back onto them so I can use them both for Kings of War and can keep them on the reserves list should their appearance be required with the advent of the Nagash book.
Onto the BSB. Firstly WLS, the banners are made out of a metal tomatoe puree tube, if I had actually had the foresight to make them out of greenstuff then they would have been 100x better. I was cutting corners TBH.
I agree with everyone (Joex48, WLS, BB, JoS); this guy looks crap. He always did. Now whilst you didn't actually say boy that guy looks crap, I am pretty sure it's what you meant! The "wow mate, he looks really great. If I was you I would consider changing...." line of comment won't cut it here! I know he looks crud so there is no need to polish this one; in the case of this guy honesty is definitely the best policy! Criticism is always welcome, as it is the only way to improve on mistakes. No offence will be taken in Gnoblar towers for people being honest!
My intention is to try and salvage him from the brink of total oblivion. This is not going to be an easy task. The sensible man would just bin him and start again. I am not known for either being sensible nor quitting on someone forever. In the end what will happen (*gazes into crystal ball*) is I will give him my best shot at rejuvenation and then make another much better BSB. But for now I will give this guy the best shot at making it back onto the battlefield. Pulling the banner off and starting again is not an option purely because I will never know if I could have done something better with it or not.
It is very true that he represents the worst work I have ever done. It is partially for that reason that I want to see if I can drag him back from the edge of the precipice and do something with him. I don't think I really took into account how big the banner was and I never planned what to paint on it...so ended up just bunging anything on it.
Anyway, I have started to try and do something with him. Pictures will be up of my work so far over the next couple of days when he gets to a point worth looking at.

I'd start with taking off the banners and remaking some thinners ones that look a bit more like the other banners you have with GS. That and your experience in painting when it comes to to do the banner should help immensely!

Hey G_H
Wow, what a huge difference. The top banner is stunning. I have to admit though, that it makes the two lower banner look a bit unfinished.
I think it's the two blue mountains which is the problem. I would suggest to paint one mountain on each of the lower banner, but doing it in the same way as you did the top mountains.
Keep up the good work and he'll be finished in no time.
Minds are like parachutes. They work best when open.
Gnoblar_Herder06 Sep 2014
Big Jim; I have to agree to a certain extent, it is the two banners at the bottom that seem to be the problem with this whole model. Not that the top one is much better, I make no bones about the fact that this is far from a decent model.
I think I am going to have to try and think of a way of pulling them 2 banners at the bottom back in-line. It's never going to be an example of my best work; more over it will serve as an example of my worst! But it is not over yet for Crassbanner Gutsmart the eyesore of the Titanchewers.

Villan_Ogre06 Sep 2014
If I may offer my observations, I agree with you G_H about the banners being the problem. I think the original paint job was acceptable and would've made a good centrepiece to some armies but not yours, it was not up to your high standard. The new paint job looks great, much better than I could hope to pull off but I agree it still looks "not quite right". In my opinion, the banners are too flat, they lack any kind of dynamism. If you look at the pictures with the gw banners, they have those, almost exaggerated, creases in which suggest movement and add depth and contrast. This for me is what is missing on the bsb and would, I think, make quite a big difference.

Ok, so who is up for another one of my (more frequent than I would like) rants?
Oh, come back guys...im not that bad, am I?
So, after agreeing with friends that we would start a new game to add to our repertoire of games, we all decided to give the game Malifaux a go. A no dice, card and mini's (if you have never heard of it; where have you been if you have never heard of Malifaux?) based skirmish game; so something different to have a stab at on the soon-to-be-with-us cold winter nights.
Off we all scuttled to buy up our crew and rule book and other paraphernalia needed to play.
This is where I strayed from the righteous path my friends. In the back of my mind I knew I shouldn't have done it . But some ungodly desire, deep inside my very being gave in to the dark side and (like a lamb to the slaughter) I put in an order with a large on-line company that, to date, have only ever delivered 1 of the 32 orders I have placed with them over the last three years within the 3-9 working day time frame.
Maybe it is my desire to see the good in everyone. Maybe it is my unfaltering belief that they will come-good. Maybe I am just a mug . It could even be the fact that many others before me have uttered the hope filled words "Really? I have never had any problems ordering from them."
Whatever it was, I hit the "pay now" button, and thus the long wait of doom ensued.
After specifically only ordering things that were "in stock" I felt (foolishly) happy in the knowledge that within a maximum of 9 working days I would be sat, brush in hand, slapping some paint on my Malifaux crew and looking forward to the next games night when me and my good friends could stand around a table trash-talking each other down and rubbishing each others ability to paint and play.
Alas this day may never come. After what can only be described as a very long day at work, I returned home to receive an e-mail from the said harbingers of doom suggesting that "they might not be able to meet the suggested delivery time". More over, they also assured me that they would be e-mailing me next week to "keep me abreast" of the progress of my order. (Next week?! the ninth day of their 3-9 working days delivery time is tomorrow... )
And so it is that, yet again, I have fallen into the oubliette of misfortune created by my own stupidity and laziness. If only I had waited for the Wyrd webstore to be back on-line after Gen Con. Why I could have ordered from them today and still taken delivery all the way from the USA before next Wednesday.
If only I had ordered from one of 19 other companies in the UK (not counting ebay stores) then I could be sat right now painting happily away with not a care in the world. If only...
And so it came to pass that maybe, just maybe, I may have learned my lesson this time and I will not order stuff from the very games store that I am now convinced Satans very minions run, But I doubt it. You would think I would have learned...80% of the stuff I have ordered in the past was all stuff I could have strolled into any Games Workshop in the country and plucked right off the shelf. But oh no, lazily languishing in the comfort of my faux leather armchair I tap away on the fated pay now button only to discover a 7 week wait for an Ironblaster or box of bulls.
Some people will never learn....I am apparently one of them. *starts day dreaming and gazing out the window* I wonder if I will ever get to have a game of this Malifaux thing? I think the rest of the guys are starting their journey into the world of Malifaux next week...it sure sounds like fun

Bummer news on the minis. I hate waiting on minis to arrive for a project (even if I have hundreds that are sitting here needing paint anyway).
The freehand on the big BSB banner looks awesome!! Well done mate!!

Love your rants but also hate false advertising! Send them an email to complain properly (I mean polite but unbelievably annoyed) and see if they throw so etching in for free.
I MUCH prefer the freehand on the banner, it's brilliant. Salvaged the model basically! Regardi comments about the other two banners: whilst the painting on them is wonderful I think it's just the texture of the banners themselves. However, there's not much you can do about that now! You've made it usable and attractive (no mean feat for an ogre!) so success!

Thanks BB. I am still pretty sure this is the worst work I have done, but I am working on it.
In fact I am working on it to such an extent that I doubt it will be finished by the end of September. None-the-less, when it is done it will either be "that masterpiece I always wanted it to be" or " why the hell didn't you just bin it and start again??". Either way work on the BSB continues.
This is not what we want to hear though. Where the hell have you been hiding for 3 weeks? That's more the question!
Well, without getting into it too much, I decided to splash loads of cash out on models and games systems instead of paying my BT bill. This resulted in the complete cessation of my internet connection (broadband) and my phone.
On the face of it, this must seem like a good idea to my provider...but actually it was a total cock-up on their part. Why? Well, they cut my phone off for a month which just taught me one thing....I don't need it! That has saved me nearly £40 a month, so thanks BT I now know I don't need a land-line! I would never have discovered this without you cutting the phone, so I owe you a massive thanks for this.
Next up was cutting the broadband. Well, that was a pain but it did do one thing; give me loads (and I mean like loads) of time to paint stuff that has been on the desk for ages.
I will be posting up pictures of all the stuff that I have been doing over the last month, but there is lots of it so bare with me. I have done ogre stuff, Abyssal Dwarf stuff, O&G stuff, Malifaux stuff etc. I have also learnt to play loads of new systems and really gotten involved with the local games club.
So all I can say is this; Thank you BT for cutting off my phone and Internet...without you I wouldn't have realized that A) I don't need you and B) I wouldn't have made new friends and gotten more painting/ gaming in. Well done you little stars! You have really done me proud!
Horrray for BT!
Pictures of endless progress will follow.

Wow BT for the win! Well I am certainly glad you have be given the time to get down and arty as well as gamey! Looks like you have kicked yourself out of this rut you have been having for awhile!
I can only be very happy for you G_H! Also very glad you've been out there getting stuck in to the gaming! Great stuff!
Can't wait to to see the flood of pics to follow.
Kind regards Zolas.

I'd see it as a definite positive as BT are the worst company I've ever had the misfortune to deal with in terms of customer service. Anyway, before this turns into a G_H style rant, good to see you back and I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labours!

Ok, first up a confession of sorts...well not a confession but;
I didn't pay my phone bill so obviously was "restricted" from making telephone calls and using my broadband, hence my absence for a couple of weeks. This, as I have said, gave me loads of time for hobby related stuff.
Or so I though.... It wasn't until I went to photograph all my "progress" for the last two weeks that it all of a sudden doesn't look like that much. Which is a bit odd and disappointing.
Anyway, enough blather, lets see some pictures. First up in my quest to really get to grips with my Abyssal Dwarf army for Kings of War (that is also partly my Chaos Dwarf army for WBF) I built this bunch od dwarves. May I say they were and absolute nightmare being hybrid models (part-metal, part-plastic) and a total pain-in-the-butt to build.
What we are looking at here is 40 Abyssal Dwarf Immortal Guard and 20 Abyssal Dwarf Black Souls. Behind them (at the back) are a variety of warmachines (rocket launchers mostly). Nightmares one and all. They are now all undercoated and painting them has started.
I must add that I have been lucky enough to play a few games of KoW recently, using my Ogre army and I have to confess it is a great game, really simple, easy to pick up and pretty quick to get played. In one 3 hour period me and a couple of mates managed to get two games in one of which was a three way battle. Great game I cannot recommend it enough; if you have an Ogre army already then you just need a rule book and you could be banging a game out in a lunch hour, that simple.
Other than KoW stuff I have made a start on this bad-boy which I have been putting off for ages;
Now, believe it or not this Thundertusk is actually going to be white. This base colour is just to give that dirty underpinning look that some white furred animals have (like say a Polar Bear). So the next step for this beastie is several layers of varying shades of cream to white. It's a WIP so we shall see how it progresses.
Next up on the list of stuff started off with this little bundle;
For anyone who doesn't know much about Malifaux, what we are looking at here is the rule book, two decks of cards and two crews from the Neverborn faction.
If you don't know anything about Malifaux then that wont make much sense but, trust me, to actually play a game all you need is the rule book, a box of models and a deck of cards. It's cheap to get into and has a low model count but the rules are pretty complex and it is a very tactical game in the skirmish style.
I have also been really lucky to have had someone give me a demo game that really helped me to get my head around the basic rules, which was very kind of them and invaluable.
So, my first crew (the first one I am building) goes by the title of "no shelter here" but is more commonly known as the Pandora crew.
I was really looking forward to building these guys and giving them some brush-love. The crew consists of a leader called Pandora, and a bunch of henchmen and hangers on. In this case a little girl, a baby and a bunch of (kind of) ghosts.
That's right; a little girl and a baby. Both brutal killers. This is pretty common stuff in Malifaux. The real shocker for me was when I assembled "Baby Kade" ready for undercoating. Baby Kade and Candy (the little girl) are small. Like really small. How small? Well, here they are pictured next to a Gnoblar;
How the hell am I going to put detail into that model!
Anyway, I have rambled on enough. More talk and pictures later. That's me for now.

Nice GH! I really like the colour your going for with the thundertusk. If all my hobby stuff lines up properly this won't I want to get myself one too. That colour scheme will come out a lot like gw scheme I imagine. They have that yellowy base moving towards a light. I recommend using a brush and painting every hair instead of dry brushing. It sounds time consuming but it's really not because the hairs are large. Worked great on my stonehorn.
Gnoblar is also looking ace! Will be cool to see him painted!!
Cheers man

JoS; It's not only patience but also requires a level of understanding of different techniques. I don't mean that in a smart-ass way, what I mean is; if you were new to gaming, assembling and painting then this would be at best a nightmare. Not many people start out know how to perform rudimentary pinning, greenstuffing etc. It would just be too much for some if this was your first step into this type of hobby. Which reflects on the company expecting people to do this TBH.
I have had an "understanding the basics" Malifaux game so far, and am playing a proper game tomorrow night.
So far it is all taking it's time to sink in TBH. The transition from big army games to small faction games (not to mention the "no dice, card flipping" thing) is taking it's time. I am still having trouble understanding some of the way the rule book is written. I have to say that, in my experience, Malifaux is definitely a game you need to see played to learn it. Reading the rule book alone will not be enough to actually learn to play the game. That would be my thoughts on it.

Boregut Ten-bellies; Whelp eater, Chum-chewer, Dwarf Devourer, Masticator of Mournfang
Boregut was not expected to live past his 3rd year. A seemingly puny child, and certainly nothing to be proud of! After some minor consideration on making him the "guest of honour" at the Gutfeasters yearly feast (complete with rectal spit and an apple in his mouth) his disappointed father cast him into the deepest darkest oubliette in the vague hope that he would prove his worth in years to come as a savage Gorger and redeem his place in the tribes ranks as a killing machine.
As the years past, all thoughts of Boregut were forgotten and many more yelps were tossed by the tribe into the oubliette with little thought to their existence (the Gutfeasters were a tribe of particularly poor breeding stock!). Deep inside the bowels of the earth Boregut was gnawing his way through the bones of anything that was tossed into the hole, along with any other unsavoury creature that frequented these dark depths.
At the age of 21 Boregut found his way to the surface and took his first steps into the light. A scrawny and wretched creature he was shunned by the tribe and wandered away from his own lands, finding his way to the shores that looked onto the Dragon Isles.
Pressganged into service on a steam powered ship, populated by Dwarfs, he was forced to shovel coal into the ships furnace and in return was fed as much Chum as he could consume. Which to be fair was quite allot! Over time his hatred for his Dwarf masters grew and when finally the ship was defeated in battle by a Dark Elf Flotilla, Boregut was found on the ships deck, eating his way through the corpses of the former crew.
The Dark Elves took Boregut and again he was enslaved, tortured and used a guinea pig for all manner of spells and curses as was the want of the Dark Elves. Time passed and Boregut found himself back on dry land, having escaped his captors and wandering once again through the Mountains of Mourn. He was a changed creature with a soul twisted and blackened by his years of torture. His appetite was now at almost epic proportions and his ability to savagely slaughter anything that came within earshot of him, was almost legendary.
It was at this time that Boregut found himself cornered and trapped by a pack of savage and untamed Mournfang. No one knows how his defeat of this pack came to be; but as the dust settled all that remained of the melee was a sea of bone and fur and Boregut aloft a particularly nasty beast (that he oddly went on to call Burt?). Thus his career as a Mournfang Crusher had begun.
Over time stories of Boreguts exploits made their way to many a camp fire in the mountains of Mourn. Names were added until Boregut was not only legendary but now bore the titles; Chum Chewer, Dwarf Devourer and Mournfang Masticator. The latter being applied after many had witnessed Boregut, in the midst of battle, devour his own mount once it had been wounded or slain in the ferocity of battle.
So it is that Boregut Ten-Bellies came into being, and his legend will never die (nor for that matter will his appetite! ).

Sounds great, look forward to seeing a Gorger riding a Mournfang ;-) in all seriousness i look forward to seeing what you come up with
It is just this bit:
At the age of 21 Boregut found his way to the surface and took his first steps into the light.
That makes me think:
"Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!"
