Mousekiller's Works in Progress

original thread ↗

As many of you know... I am primarily an army painter. A painter that jumps from army to army, and doesn't always have time to paint due to work.

I am fascinated by the Warhammer World and it's army system, though I don't actually play the game. I am also not a painter who cares where a miniature comes from, so long as the miniature, in my mind at least, feels like it belongs to the army. For some reason, this helps me paint. Making up a small story for each army, and adding bits to it as I add new units and characters.

Painting in this way tends to allow certain threads many weeks or months in between updates. So, in an effort to keep a thread active, I have decided to create this thread for all the WiPs I have, regardless of the army they belong to, and then update the army threads as I have completed units to add to them.

For those of you interested in following along, I am dedicating this first post to the links to all of the armies, for easy access to the completed products. I will be back soon with some WiP pics

Mousekiller's Other Armies:
WORKS IN PROGRESS
ORCS AND GOBLINS
DWARVES
OGRE KINGDOMS
VAMPIRE COUNTS
EMPIRE
MORTALS OF CHAOS
BEASTHERD

Ok, so here they are, in no particular order (I will do a full run thru here, then "try" to do at least weekly updates on stuff that has seen progress):

Skaven:

Midtone color was put on the body with a quick red wash.  Also, did a midtone red in some of the open wound areas.  Started some layering on the tail... lots more washes and layers to go on this beast.  For the base, the idea is a sewer, the depressed area in the middle will have a greenish sewage drainoff going thru it.

Beasts of Chaos:

Not a lot done... still working on the base model for the army, and not very diligently.

Dwarves:

(see above).  Finished the Slayers today, next up will be the druid model from reaper... who for army purposes will be a rune lord who has lost his wits :)

Empire:

The knights test model was finished last year, just not sure how much I still like it.  Going to paint these in blocks of three, so, including the test model who may see some changes, here are the three.

Mortals of Chaos:

Working on the third rank of marauders.  Started skin, base coat metals, base coat reds.

Ogres:

Another product from last year, hence the reason why they all seem in different stages.  In any case, I have done a bit on the banner and brought the bannerman up to about the same progress as the other two.  Not a whole lot left to do, time to get into the details :)

Orcs and Goblins:

Continuing work on Skarsnik.  I think I finally got the scales to a point that I am not disgusted by them, thought they will likely get another highlight.  Also, did the wood bits and started the horn bits on gobbla.

Daemons of Chaos:

This guy is actually a product from a few years ago, started and left on the shelf.  I think partly because I was overwhelmed by the lava :)  I plan to re-do the base to a rocky"ish" outcrop with lava pushing through certain points vs completely enveloping the base.

Vampire Counts:

Last rank of skeletons are almost done.  Still need to make a 5x4 base for them and plan to add a few pumpkins for spice.

So, that is where we are - hope to see you next week with some completed stuff :)  Please keep in mind that I will continue to post completed products in there perspective army threads.

Happy painting!

Some nice painting here, looking forward to see the progress on the Skaven Warlord on Brood Horror.
The Ogres look great, can you post a Pic with some better detail?

Keep up the good work!
Great work!  :D
Looking forward to seeing more. :)
Nice minis, I reallly like the scales on Gobbla. Keep up the nice work.

As promised.... here is a weekly update.

No movement on Beasts or Daemons.

Skaven:  More work on the base done... added some water affect.  Also, another highlight to the rat followed by a red and green wash.  A lot more to do.

Dwarfs:  Basecoat and one highlight on skin.  Undercoat robes, horns, wood, and hair.

Empire:  Not a whole lot done, primered the third knight and worked up the metallics.  Will probably work up the blue bits and some lining over the next week.

Ogre Kingdoms:  Some rust work done.  I think I am going to tone down the last metallic highlight a little.

Orcs and Goblins:  A little water effect on the back of the base.  Also, worked in some rust on his weapons, though I am trying not to go overboard.  Worked on Gobblas horns a bit more, and started working the inside of his mouth.

Vampire Counts:  Rust effects.  Definitely going to need to tone down the metallic highlight.

Weekly vow:  Finish skeletons (I don't know why, but it seems these have taken forever...)

Till next week!

Frost Jotun:  Thanks mate!

Ok, weekly update time.

Skaven:  Started layering the skin on the rat, blocked out the fur patches with Dark Skin, started a more deliberate round of washes to differentiate between the oozing flesh bits and what should be more normal flesh.  This guy is massive, very daunting session when I sit down to paint him.  I do know that once I get past his skin (which is why I started with it) he is going to really start coming together.  Maybe for next week I will start blocking out other bits like the armour and rider just to give a sense of the overall colors and how they might work together.

Dwarfs:  Actually made some good headway on him, really simple to paint without a lot of complications, which is probably one of the reasons I enjoy painting the dwarves.  Did the blue sash and the white robes.

Empire:  Washed and re-highlighted the armour, though I think it needs a bit more.  This armour is coming out much more shiny then the other two, which I like, so I may need to go back and fix the other two.  Though I prefer dark and grim, I think that knights would take more time to polish there armour.  Also started the blue hatchwork and blocked out the cape.

Vampire Counts:  Completed the skeleton unit, check it out here SKELETAL SPEARMEN or check out the Vampire Counts thread for more pics.  Up next, another primed mini from last year:

Orcs and Goblins:  Just a bit of work on Gobbla's mouth.

Ogre Kingdoms:  Did a little with the leather bits, though not enough to really warrant a picture.  Maybe next week.

Mortals, Daemons, and Beasts:  No painting:(  Though I add some texture to the daemon base.

Danne:  I thought it would fit better in the Cauldron because it is so many different projects, vs the 7 or so threads that I have as Gnoblogs (which I am still updating once I complete something for each army).  I am OK with switching it over.

Morkash:  Thanks mate.
mousekiller_miniatures at EBAY
MK AT CMON
So, here we go with the weekly update.  Got some more done, but didn't quite get around to finishing anything (though I think we should see some things finished next week).

Skaven:  Blocked out the armour bits to bring some contrast.  Another two or three highlights on the skin and a few washes... starting to separate bulbous grossness from bloody goo from actual skin.

Dwarfs:  This is one of the ones I should see through to finishing by next week, but who knows.  Really not sure what I want to paint next for the dwarfs, so if anyone has any suggestions (should be a unit or war machine type).  Added a little design to the hem of his dress, highlighted the metal bits a bit, finished the skin.  Still need to do the horns, add dirt and grime to the hem, highlight the design a little, finish the metal bits and gems.

Empire:  Did quite a bit on the knight this week.  Fleshed out some color on the horse, added the dots and fleshed out the cloak, did quite a bit with the metal bits - mostly trying to get bluish hue to the non blue armour bits.

Ogre Kingdoms:  Finished the leather and gold bits.

Beasts of Chaos:  Actually started it this week.  Did the skin and a bit on the hair.  Still not entirely sure what color I am going to go with on these guys, something natural but that will stand apart from the more natural colors of hair and skin.

Orcs and Goblins:  Only a little done on Skarsnik, but if I just sat down for an hour or so I could probably get him finished.  Need still to finish the beard bits hanging from his belt (I blocked them out this week with some color), another highlight or two on the skull, teeth, and bony bits, another highlight to gobblas skin, the dwarf shield on the ground in front of gobbla, the leg sticking out from gobbla's mouth... ok, maybe still quite a bit to go.

Vampire Counts:  Started working the skin and wings, though neither is complete at this point.  Still not sure what direction I will go with the armour.

Mortals of Chaos:  Worked on the skin a bit, though nothing worth a picture.

Daemons of Chaos:  Blocked out some metal bits, but again nothing worth a picture.

Until next week!

Time for the weekly update!  As a side note, I will be extremely busy next weekend, so likely will not do an update until the following weekend.

This week seemed very productive in that I finished two models... so here is the breakdown:

Daemons, Mortals, Beasts of Chaos, Vampire Counts:  No progress (next update, I promise).

Skaven:  Not a lot done, but I started working the robes on the rider and some of the heraldry.  Also, blocked out the skintone of the rider and worked the metals a little more.

Empire:  Again, not a whole lot done, but I felt like I needed to introduce another color, so I added a very small amount of white to help liven things up.

Dwarves:  FINISHED BARDAL THE MAD!   Check out the Dwarven Throng thread to check him out.  So, whats next...  a unit of 12 Ironbreakers.  In full disclosure, I could not find the right size drill bit so all of those models were painstakingly stood upright on the bases with no pins (need to stop at the hardware store this week).

Ogres:  These guys are very very close to being done.  A lot of very small little details to still pick out... but I may pull the next three down to get the rolling.

Orcs and Goblins:  FINISHED SKARSNIK! Check out my Orcs and Goblins thread (incidentally I have posted all the links to the army threads in the intro to this topic).  So, next up is another blast from the past, a half finished project from last year.  One of the reasons that I stopped painting them was I got really frustrated with the color of the wolves, I just could not get them to look natural... so I really need your help on these.  If you have any amazing wolf recipes please let me know so that I can try them out :)

See you in two weeks, until then, HAPPY PAINTING!

So, when I said two weeks before, I meant more like three...

Not a huge amount done as I have been busy with work and the like... but an update nonetheless...

Skaven:  Did a bit on the riders skin... still a lot more to go.  Hit the fur with some highilights, now time to wash, highlight, rinse, repeat...  Also, started working some of the open flesh stuff.  I didn't notice before, but I see some flash on the head of his spear... so I will have to trim that up as well.

Empire:  These guys are pretty close to done, still need to finish the ground work and work the saddle up, though I am not sure what direction to go with the saddle.  Should I use the blue/white colors, stick with brown, or introduce a new color that will contradict the other two?  Also, need to work the gold bits up some more.

Dwarves:  Finished pinning them into the bases, primered, and started the first four.  At this stage the blue and white are base coated, and the metals have been worked to three highlights and a single wash.  This is where the painting will actually begin, as I was very careless (fully intentionally) before now.

Vampire Counts:  Worked a bit on the armour and cape, though still a lot more to go.  Had a little oops with his head (the little red dot).  Also, worked the wings a little more.

Ogre Kingdoms:  Think that I am close with getting these guys done, some last few touch ups on the banner and musician.  Thought I was done with the boss, but looking at him now makes me think the cape needs a lot more work.  Please be extremely critical of him, as the rest will soon fall into place beside him.

Warriors of Chaos:  A little more skin highlighting...

Orcs and Goblins:  Two wolf versions... please feel free to provide recipes or advice on painting wolf fur :)

And that just leaves the beasts and daemons, of which I have done nothing with.  The beasts are just annoying me because everytime I look at them I know how much work is going to have to be involved in getting rid of the flesh.  Also, not entirely sure I am sold on the reddish skin vs a more human looking skin tone, thoughts?

Until next week, happy painting:)

Well, it has been a few weeks (thanks to long hours at work and a bit of a field trip to the high desert for two weeks)...

In any case... I have been mostly working the vamp lord, dwarfs, and a little on the skaven and daemons.  I have really got to get it in gear and start finishing some stuff...

For the skaven I started working his skin... though I think I may need to work some more purple into it...

On the Dwarfs did quite a bit of metal work and worked up the blue and white.

On the Daemon, I covered up the base with the thought that I would prefer to have small bits of lava poking thru the earth vs an entire base of lava... also, worked the wings up a bit.

And on the vamp lord, I worked the wings a bit more, the armour a bit, and the bones a small amount.  I also did some veins in the wings, though I am not completely convinced.

Goretooth:  Hope to spend some time finishing those ogres this week mate... so there will be at least three of them looking menacingly for something to eat.

ecwh070:  Thanks mate!

Jimmy:  Sometimes I think it is my bane too... I would get soooo much more done if I just called projects done...

Dwarves have always been a good fall back painting project for me, easy color scheme, not much thought process.  I use them to get me motivated back into painting after a long hiatus.  I pulled all the old unfinished projects out that are on this blog as well, so hopefully I will have some decent updates soon.

In the meantime, I am working on a unit of dwarfs I am calling "the baggage train"

And also a repaint of an old bolt thrower so it matches the rest of the army.

Both groups should be done fairly soon...  famous last words.

Hope to have more updates soon.

Hi Mousekiller,
would you be too offended if I moved this thread over to Gnoblogs? The reason is this is more like an army diary rather than painting and modelling discussion and above that I don't want the regular watchers of Gnoblogs to miss out on seeing some of the great work you have done here.

This week is a glimpse at the completed beastman test model.  This guy will set the tone for the army, so comments are definitely needed... anything from colors to style, etc.

I am trying not to just post pics for the sake of posting pics, so my effort will be to update an army type each week that has made some progress, with pictures specific to the army.  But I will give a typed update on what else I am working on.

Beastmen:  Army test model posted for review.  I also have the second one about 70% completed.

Orcs and Goblins:  5 goblin wolf riders (about 50% complete), Giant (60%), Orc test model (60%), Night Goblin Boss primed for painting.

Ogres:  4 Ogre troops (80%), I had 6 total but can't seem to find two of them?

Dwarfs:  A little progress from last week but not a lot.  Still working the 20 "Baggage Train" (40%), and the Bolt Thrower (70%).  Also have a Dwarf Thane in the que, just done with the basing and shaving the bottom of the model to get him to fit the way I want.

Mortals of Chaos: 20 marauders (about 60%), 1-10 are complete, working on 11-15 which are about 70% painted, and 16-20 are still being based.

Demons of Chaos:  Working on the demon from the earlier pics (60%)

Skaven:  Skaven lord on Giant Rat (60%), and also basing a test model for the troopers.

Empire: Working on models 1-3 of 9 knights panther

Vampire Counts: 3 Crypt Bats (will be varghulfs) about 70% complete.

That is it.  If anyone wants me to throw something in the que, and it fits with the army rules as far as the configuration (I don't care who manufacturers it), I will be glad to get it primered up and thrown in.  No guarantees that it gets finished anytime soon, I tend to be sporadically inspired to paint different things each week.

This week I am updating the Orcs and Goblins WIPs.  So, on the table is the wolf riders, all five are in various stages of completion... now I just need to commit to finishing them.  The musician and boss are the closest to being done.  The Giant is also in their, very nearly done... need to finish his right arm and start hitting the little details.  And finally, the Orc test model, on this one I am trying a new skin recipe, which I am not quite happy with yet.  Looking for something that is still green but has more brownish undertones.  Also, for the uniforms I am thinking of reddish brown, leathery brown, and black/grey colors and just mixing them up on the models so that they are uniform, but come across as not... if that makes sense.  Also, by the orc, is another night goblin boss who has been based and primered but I am committed to finishing the wolf riders before I start him (we'll see how that works out, lol).

Beasts:  Did some weapon work on the second model, not a lot of progress since last week.
Ogres:  A little facial work (red noses and blue under the eyes).
Dwarfs:  weathering on the barrels of the organ gun and some gem work.  Two more baggage train models just about complete.
Mortals of Chaos:  No progress.
Demons of Chaos:  No progress.
Skaven: some base work on the test model.
Empire:  A little highlighting on one model.
Vampire Counts:  No progress.
Tomb Kings:  Yes, tomb kings!  I have a bone giant on the basing table... and of course had to order all the new GW models that are coming out with the Nagash story line...

KruleBear:  I am glad you said that, I was on the fence, but it does feel out of place.  Those trays are very much a two decade flashback, when bases used to be painted that bright ugly green, lol.
mousekiller_miniatures at EBAY

Ok, this week is the Ogre Kingdoms update.  These guys are very close to being finished, but the little details keep dragging me back to them and keeping me from calling them done.  I re-worked the cape on the boss, the purple and red were just not enough contrast.  Also, went back and re-worked some red with the newer GW red paints... a little more bright then the Reaper ones I was using (don't get me wrong, I love the Reaper Master Series paints, red is just so hard to get that wow factor with).  Any last minute C and C would be welcome... I am hoping to wrap them up soon.

Beasts:  Beasts.  Started working up a third model of ten.  I need to get the remainder properly based and primered this week...

Orcs and Goblins:  Putting the finishing touches on the wolf rider musician and the boss.  Nothing more on the Orc test model.  Put the metallics on the NG Boss model.

Mortals of Chaos:  Worked some of the detail bits on models 11-15.  I need to get 16-20 based and primered.

Demons:  No progress.

Skaven:  Test model is fully based.  Need to work a few mould lines off of him and start painting.  Worked some green skin bits on the monstrosity.

Empire:  Finishing touches on 1-3 or 9 Knights Panther.

Vampire Counts:  Metal work on the skeleton model (1 of 10).  I need to get serious about finishing the Crypt Bats... not a whole lot left to do on them, just in that subdued green that I never think about when I sit down.

Tomb Kings:  Bone Giant has been based and is ready for primer.

Dwarfs:  Finishing touches on the Organ Gun, now to get the finishing touches on the crewman complete.  Also, worked on models 5 and 6 of 12 for the baggage train.  Based the Lord model I am getting ready to paint (this should bring us to 2000 points, so once he is complete I will get a new army shot).  He needs to be primered now.
mousekiller_miniatures at EBAY
MK AT CMON
This weeks update will be Mortals of Chaos and Daemons of Chaos.  I am currently working the third rank (though I plan to go back and re-detail some of the reds in the front rank as I do not think they pop well enough).  For the fourth rank, the base is done, I just need to get the models pinned in and primered to get them started.  For the Daemon model, I redid my thought process on the base to have the lava coming out in smaller spirts and will ultimately have a similar base as the marauders with that exception (there will be snow as well as lava).  His wings are proving to be a pain, I am looking for more contrast on them but can't seem to find it.  Also, I am not sure where to go with the plates covering his nether regions... I could almost leave them as is, maybe a bit darker and obviously a few highlights... but will it be a mistake to not use a color in there?

Skaven:  The test model got primered today, and will be ready for painting.  No further work on the skaven lord and the giant rat, but this model will likely be very slow going.

Empire:  I should have models 1-3 of the Knights Panther done by the time an empire update comes along... models 4-6 are in the que to be based and primered, and I need to locate models 7-9 after the move.  Also, I added a mortar and crew which I had previously painted in very pumpkin like colors that will get repainted to match the army.

Vampire Counts:  Very likely to have the crypt bats complete by the time we get to an update, I need to model some pumpkins to add to the base.  Nor further work complete on model 1 of 10 for the skele spearmen unit.

Tomb Kings:  Got the bone giant primered today.  Excited to start painting him.

Dwarfs:  Finished the organ gun, check out the Mousekillers Dwarven Throng thread to see it (there is a link at the bottom of the first post in this topic).  Finished models 5-6 of 12 for the baggage train, and worked on 7-8.  Also, primered the dwarf lord.  Once these models are all complete, I should have very close to 2000 points in dwarfs (I may have to add some reinforcements to the handgunners and the dwarfs with two handed weapons to even it out, but very close).

Beasts:  Still need to get the remainder of the unit based and primered.

Orcs and Goblins:  More metallic work on the Night Goblin Boss, but nothing much beyond that.

This week brings the skaven update.  I have blocked out the colors I think I will go with for the rats, but I am not completely convinced about the red/green combo on the shield.  I could skip this, and just do wood for the planks?  Any advice?  Also, on the skaven lord, I am really trying to get those green bulbous bits on the giant rat to look very rotten and infected... any advice would be great.

Empire:  A little more work on knights 1-3 this week, also started making an appropriate base for the 9 models.  Model 4 got set up with a bit of green stuff to make make the model more leapordy.  5 and 6 will come next, followed by 7-9.

Vampire Counts:  Every time I look at the crypt bats I tell myself I will paint them soon.  Skeleton 1 of 10 got a little wood work.

Tomb Kings:  Did a base of scorched brown on all the bone and wood bits for the Skeletal Giant.  Also, put a base of metallics.

Dwarfs:  Just about done with 7 and 8 of 12 of the baggage train.  Also, worked the thane up quite a bit, might even finish him before he even makes it to a WIP update ;)

Beasts:  Worked on 2-3 of 12 of the Beasts.  Same blondish hair as the test model, but I will use different hair colors for the rest.  Have to finish the loin clothes and age the weapons and these two will be done.  Also, primered and put a metallic base coat on the Khazrak One Eye model.

Orcs and Goblins:  No significant updates.

Mortals of Chaos:  No progress.

Demons of Chaos:  A few washes of red to the inside of the wings.

My Gnobblog: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=25054.0

Here's my blog: http://paint-hammer.blogspot.co.uk/
This weeks update is Empire.  Knights 1-3 are very nearly done, need some minor work:  the sword of the captain is not quite right, so needs to be redone.  The tongue and claws of the panther cloak needs to be finished.  No more work has been done on the other models.  I need to figure out how to best complete banners... my two dimensional ability is severely lacking.  Also, added another warrior priest that has been in the "I will finish these models eventually" pile (back when I was using white primer).  And a quick shot of the mortar and crew before the repaint, back when they looked more like pumpkin patch kids.

Vampire Counts:  Did quite a bit on the Crypt Bat boss, still have to do his greenish skin and then start getting into the little details.  Skeleton 1 of 10 got his bone bits done.

Tomb Kings:  Started the bone on the giant.  Mostly just drybrushed up three layers... now to wash and then start highlighting up more deliberately.

Dwarfs:  Small detail work left on 7 and 8 of 12 of the baggage train.  More work on the Thane, need to start working the metallics now.

Beasts:  Worked the skin on Khazrak.  Finished the wood work on models 2-3 of 12.

Orcs and Goblins:  Going to finish he basing on the musician model and call him done.  Time to get to work on the rest of them.  No other progress on the NG boss or the orc.

Ogre Kingdoms:  No progress.

Mortals of Chaos:  Did the wood work on models 11-15.  Added a set of 3 Chaos Ogres to the que, basing on 1 of 3 done.  These can be used for the Ogre Kingdoms army as well.

Demons:  No progress.

On a side note, just found out my dog has cancer so I have to fly out to see him before surgery and will be gone most of the week, so likely not much will get completed this week.

Zolas:  Thank you!  I am still struggling to get that oozing disgusting feel I am looking for though.

This week brings us to the vamps and tomb king update.  The Crypt Bat boss is continuing to receive work, I need to start his skin and I think he will start looking complete.  I worked the wings a little more, they need some more washes and highlights to get them to the color of the other two.  Also, the base will need some more work and a lot more pumpkins!  For the skeletons, the test model got a wash of black and will start getting real highlights soon.  After putting them all together on the base, this unit is going to take a lot of work.  I have 9 models (the 10th has got to be around somewhere), but I think if I use a little ingenuity I can get the unit up to a 20 strength after a little boneyard raid.  For the skeletal giant, he got a wash of black and I will start highlighting the bones next... also gave the medal bits a base of gold.  I know for the Tomb King theme I am going to use primary colors of turquoise, gold, and red, but not sure quite yet how to incorporate the turquoise on this guy.

Dwarfs:  Continued finishing models 7 and 8, need to finish the metal bits and they will be done.  Also, worked the hero some more, he is coming along quickly.  Once I am done with this group, I should be close to 2000 points for the army, but I need to go and do the math... I might have to add 10 more warriors with two handed weapons to that unit and a couple more handgunners to round it all out.

Beasts:  Did some lining on the models 2-3 and applied some washes to Khazrak.

Orcs and Goblins:  No progress

Ogre Kingdoms:  No progress.  I really need to finish these guys as the OK army has so many cool models to paint.

Mortals of Chaos:  Did the leather work on the boots for models 11-15.

Demons:  No progress.

Skaven:  Worked the leather bits on the test model.

Empire:  Worked the armor on the warrior priest.

As for my dog, they removed to suspicious sites and tested the lymph nodes for cancer, all results came back negative so they think they got it all.

So, we are finally back around to Dwarfs.  Since the last Dwarf update, we finished the Organ Gun and started the Dwarf Thane.  I finished 7 and 8 of the 12, now I need to finish the details on 9-12, and looking at the hornblower I realize that I somehow forgot to do his feet.  Once I finish these, I will add about 10 more dwarf warriors with two handed weapons to the unit of 10 that is already done, and a few more handgunners (I think 6, to round it out at 16).  That should close this army up at 2000 points and then we can really start getting crazy with it.  Anyway, not much to the thane, but any tips would be appreciated... I am thinking of a "badger" like cape?

Beasts:  Primered and based models 4-5 of 12.  Just about done with 2-3.  Did the horns and skulls on Khazrak.

Orcs and Goblins: Did the skin on the Goblin Boss.  Primered and based two more orcs.  No progress on the wolf riders... maybe next week.

Ogre Kingdoms:  Maybe next week :(  It seems when they get to the little details I struggle to finish.

Mortals of Chaos:  Did the red bits on models 10-11 of 20.  Also, based model 2 of 3 of the Chaos Ogres, and primered model 1.

Demons:  Started working the red again, trying to really get it to pop... we'll see how that works out.

Skaven:  Worked the green boils a little on the rat.  No other progress.

Empire:  Added the furry bits and cape to model 4 of 9.  Painted the red bits of 1 of 3 to the mortar crew.  Also, painted the red cape of the warrior priest.  Can you tell it was a red week?

Vampire Counts:  Painted red onto the weapons of the crypt bat boss... sort of a unique pattern... we will see if I still like it when the rest of the model gets done.  Also, did the bone bits on him.  Highlighted the bones of skeleton 1 of 10, and primered models 2 and 3.

Tomb Kings:  Highlighted the bones of the skull... it will take some time to do all that bone on the skeletal giant.  Also worked the gold up a bit.

This week is an update on the beasts.  It was a busy week at work, so I did not get a lot of painting done.  Pretty much done with models 1-3, may need to touch up a few minor details.  Base coated skin and metal on models 4-5.  Also, did a bit of metal work on Khazrak.  Not entirely sure what color to do his hair in... the only picture I could find of him painted was the one in the  warhammer beasts book, but they had him with blackish grey hair, but I think he needs something to contrast all the chain mail.  Any advice?

Orcs and Goblins:  No updates this week, but since next week is the picture update my goal is to finish up the wolf hero and musician.

Ogre Kingdoms:  No updates.

Mortals of Chaos:  Metal bits on models 11-12.

Demons:  No updates.

Skaven:  No updates.

Empire:  Did a base coat of metal bits on the mortar.

Vampire Counts:  Worked the red into the weapon of the Lord Crypt Bat, also did his skin (finally).  Probably the most significant progress I made on anything this week.

Tomb Kings:  A little bit of bone work, nothing significant.  As I look at him, I really want to use turquoise somewhere, but I feel like his tattered clothing would be muted in color.

Dwarfs:  No updates on the baggage train.  Worked the metal and gem a little on the thane.

As I said, not a lot done this week, so here is to hoping for more before next week!

This week is Orcs and Goblins.  I didn't have  a lot of painting time this week because I spent most of the week in Korea, so I mostly concentrated on getting work done on these guys.  I am pretty much calling the musician and boss wolf rider complete (some very minor details to finish up), so please be very critical with them and your recommendations, we still have three more to finish up to call the unit done.  I worked up the army on the giant.  The skin needs another wash I think, then another highlight.  I like the color of the scales, but I think they will pop more once I get the cloth straps done.  Did some dry brushing on the concrete slab, still needs a few rounds of wash/highlight to give it the right sense of dirty.  He is starting to really come together I think.  Did the robes on the NG Boss.  Finally, the Orc got his pants and shoes done up, though I am not entirely sure I like how he is coming out.  I will keep working on him, a lot of times it is the midway point where I lose all motivation on a mini... and there are around 40 of these guys to paint in the long run so I want to get it right.

Ogre Kingdoms:  No updates.  I will make some headway this week, hopefully finish up the unit and get something new started.

Mortals of Chaos:  No updates.

Demons of Chaos:  No updates.

Skaven:  No updates (starting to see a trend?)

Empire:  Based 4-6 of the knights.  Need to finish the fur modeling on knight 6 so I can get the three primered.  Finished the red, yellow, and leather bits on the mortar ball carrier, which means the skin, ball, hair, and base is all he needs to be done.  I love seeing the before and after on these guys.

Vampire Counts:  Decided on green and red as colors for the skeleton unit, so I highlighted those up on the test spearman model.  I will probably incorporate red into all the units, but switch up the secondary color so that they still look cohesive but also independent, if that makes any sense.  Also happened while I was painting the giants scales... had some paint left in the pot so I figured I would try it and see if I like it.

Tomb Kings:  Basecoated the turquoise bits... not sure if I like the glowing green inside his body next to the turquoise?  He is a big model, so normally (like the giant) I could take the liberty of using a variety of colors, but most of the colors on him will be muted.  Worse case I will have to go back and repaint another color.

Dwarfs:  No update.

Beasts:  No update.

Nice work, genuinely nice work.
I don't suppose there is any chance of another pic of that giant? I do love a good giant and the work on his trousers there is exquisite, really crisp and clean and perfectly highlighted.

This week brings us to the Ogres, and I am happy to say that I finished the 4 Ogres that I was working on (you can  see the finished product on the Mousekiller's Ogre Kingdoms log).  In addition, I put together, based, and primered 1 and 2 of 4 Ironguts.  I had a few requests last week for more giant pictures, so since the Ogres don't have a huge picture update I will add in a few this week.

Mortals of Chaos:  Worked the red on the weapons of models 11-15 of the marauder unit.  Also worked the red and flesh of the Chaos Ogre Boss.

Demons:  Worked the red some more on the Demon Prince.  Also, decided to go with a more firelike look and got rid of the flesh tone on the wings... not entirely sure if I like it or not.

Skaven:  No updates.

Empire:  Primered knights 4 and 5 of 9.  Painted the red bits of 2-3 of the crew for the mortar.

Vampire Counts:  Worked the metal bits and red armor bits on the crypt bat boss.

Tomb Kings:  No updates.

Dwarfs:  No updates.

Beasts: No updates.

Orcs and Goblins:  Tried another brown color on model 2 of the Orc unit.  I think I like it.

Gnoblar_Herder:  Of course there is a chance!  Thanks, let me know if you see anything wrong!

Anything wrong? There is nothing wrong with this big guy! I absolutely love the work on his trousers the stripes are really crisp and clean with excellent levels of high and low lights; especially the blue and white. This guy is one of the better giants I have seen and your painting of him is really excellent!

Have a Gnoblar from me! Call him scratchit and keep him in the cellar; he is a lively little beggar.

This week brings us to the mortals of chaos and daemons update.  I wish I would have gotten more done, but with my paper due this weekend that took up most of my time.  Worked the weaponry up a bit more on the marauders, some more highlights on the demon - please be very critical with the demon at this stage, as he is getting pretty close to done.  I decided to go with a much "hotter" look, but I still need to decide what to do with the loin cloth.  Eyes will likely be a bright green, the tongue maybe purple?  The ogre got a bit of red work done as well.  All in all, if I had had another two hours of painting time I could have finished the marauders... but the past is the past :(

Skaven:  No updates.  Plan to work on them primarily this week as they get the update next week.

Empire:  Broke the banner on the banner bearer.  Not sure what I will do.  Frustrated.  No other updates.

Vampire Counts:  No updates.

Tomb Kings:  No updates.

Dwarfs:  No updates.

Beasts:  No updates.

Orcs and Goblins:  No updates.   Not liking this trend.

Ogres:  No updates.

This week brings us the a Skaven update.  For the monstrosity, I worked the green bits a bit more, using a bit of magenta to hopefully make it a bit grosser.  Also, added some blood (will take some more, fresh blood after its been dull coated, but this blood should do for now), highlighted up the robes of the rider.  I just feel like its not quite gross enough yet, like I am missing something....  For the skaven test model, what are your thoughts?  Other than tidying up the base, he is done.  Was thinking that I might color up the shoulder bits to add some more depth?  With dags or squares?  Please be very critical with him as he is the first for the unit.

I added an overall shot of all the finished painted stuff... over a decades worth of work... pretty sad.  I did go thru a phase where I was selling, so that was probably two years lost.  Hopefully I can speed it up a bit.

Empire:  Base coated the armor and horse bits for Knight 4.  Grabbed a plastic banner pole to recreate the metal one that broke off of Knight 5, got the pole pinned into the model and the banner prepped for pinning.  I may leave it off for painting and mount it after.

Vampire Counts:  No update.

Tomb Kings:  No update.

Dwarfs:  Worked the baggage cart some, trying to finish up all the little details.

Beasts:  No updates.  Need to find some very fine wire to fix the whip that broke during a move.  Tried a green stuff solution, but it did not work well.

Orcs and Goblins:  No updates.  I am contemplating some tattoos for the giant, something to help break up that mass of a belly.

Ogres:  Basecoated the metal bits, skin, and purple parts.

Mortals of Chaso:  Worked the metal on the chaos ogre.

Demons:  Tried a purple for the loincloth, not liking it.

Well, another week of getting very little done.  This week is the Empire update, so what little time I had I tried to focus on them.  Got the pole fixed on the knight banner bearer, in the picture the banner is sitting on a pin and not glued in, so it can be painted and adjusted.  I like the taller banner look from what I had before.  On Knight 4, I did the yellow bits (still a few more stages to go), a base of blue, the metal base with a black wash, and the horse is based with a black wash.  Also did the skin bits on the knights face and the horse muzzle.  For the mortar and crew, I started the yellow side of the mortar, based the red side and metals, and worked the crew up a bit in the same colors plus the skin.  On the warrior priest, I worked the gold bit on the front, but more is going to be needed.  Also, did his skin up and added blue to the book.

Vampire Counts:  I feel like if I get any time this week, I should be able to finish the bats.  I added a highlight to the bat skin, but other than that no updates for VC.

Tomb Kings:  No updates.

Dwarfs:  No update.

Beasts:  Did the skin on Beasts 4 and 5.

Orcs and Goblins:  No updates.

Ogres:  Skin on Ironguts 1 and 2.

Mortals of Chaos:  Skin on the chaos ogre.  No other updates.

Demons of Chaos:  No updates.

Skaven:  Models 2 and 3 are getting prepped for primer.

Another week with little done, but I did finish something!  This week is Vamps and Tomb Kings, and I was able to finish the Crypt Bats, so I am excited about that.  I will post an army update soon showing them.  I am including a picture of the Vampire Counts army so you can see how little is actually done ;).  I have the skeletons at a fairly good stage, need to dirty them up and rust up the weapons, another few highlights as well, but I like the color combination for the unit.  The skeletal giant got some highlights on the cloth bits.  Also, now that I finished the crypt bats, figured I would add a summoner for the Tomb King army... does anyone remember the name of the model?  It is a Reaper model, just can't remember which one.

Dwarfs:  No updates.  I should be able to finish the baggage train and the hero by next week though.

Beasts:  Finally fixed the whip for Khazrak One Eye... it had broken.  Used some wire to make a whole new whip... hopefully it holds.

Orcs and Goblins:  No updates.

Ogres:  No updates.

Mortals of Chaos:  No updates.

Demons:  No updates.  Pulled some Blood Letters out to start basing.

Skaven:  Worked the nasty bits on the giant rat a little trying to get it to be grosser.

Empire:  No updates.

Dwarf update!  So, I didn't get a lot done with the rest of the armies, but I did manage to finish the baggage train and the Dwarf Hero, so I am pretty happy about that.  So, this week is photos of what is up next for the dwarfs.  I have an older model that I have modified, Kragg the Grimm, who will get a repaint as well as the addition of the pony to pull the anvil and his two anvil guards.  Also, next for the gun line will be a stone thrower.  And finally, six reinforcements for the unit of Thunderers.  The last will need to be done first, as well as another 10 warriors with double handed weapons to round out the 2000 points... which gives me ample time to work a proper scenic drop for the first two models.  Check out the Dwarven Throng Army thread for the completed works thus far!  The link can be found in the first post in this topic.

Beasts:  Nothing done.  The goal this week will be to finish Khazrak and the next two beast troopers.

Orcs and Goblins:  I did some leather strap work on the giant.

Ogres/Bretonnia:  No updates.  Added a unit of Pegasus knights to the que.

Mortals/Demons of Chaos:  No updates.

Skaven/Lizards:  No updates to Skaven.  Decided to round out all of the armies and add Lizards (and elves, later) with a unit of skinks in the que.

Empire:  No updates to Empire.

Vamps/Tomb Kings:  No updates.

Elves:  All three elf types will fall into this category, as I really hate the skinny buggars.  Added a unit of High Elf archers to the que.

Enjoy!

This week brings us to the Beasts. I was able to complete Khazrak this week, so I expect to start the topic, Mousekillers Beast Herd in the next 24 hours! Very exciting. I am including a WIP pic of him after I made the repair to his whip, so that you can see how it was done. I also completed two more of the herd, rounding us out to 5 completed with 10 more to go (I found three Reaper miniatures that I think fit perfectly with the unit and give it a little more variety). Also, pieced together 3 Minotaurs to be qued up for painting now that Khazrak is done! Hope you enjoy the update this week! On a side not, please be very critical on all pieces, I am definitely trying to improve, and I don't take offense easily!

Oh, and I also spent a lot of time this week updating some of the story lines, particularly for the Dwarves, Night Goblins, and, shortly, the Beasts.  Also, since some of my older pics seem a bit blurry I am considering going back in the threads and editing the older blurry pics with new, focused pics so if you get bored feel free to take a gander.  It will be a slow process, and definitely won't all happen at once.  I will start with orcs and goblins since some of their pictures are the oldest.

ORCS AND GOBLINS: As part of a challenge at DAWARPATH over Christmas, I completed a Goblin Spear Chukka in less than 24 hours... so I suppose when I put my mind to it it is possible to complete a mini in less than 2 months! No other updates, but I will try to get some things done with the army this week as it is up for the update next week.

OGRES/BRETONNIA: No updates.

MORTALS/DAEMONS OF CHAOS: No updates.

SKAVEN/LIZARDS: No updates.

EMPIRE: No updates.

VAMPS/TOMB KINGS: No updates.

HIGH/WOOD/DARK ELVES: No updates.

DWARFS: Based and primered the 6 thunderers.

This week brings us to the Orcs and Goblins, personally one of my favorite armies that I am painting!  Just so much character in these figures, and such a huge range to choose from!  Anyway, this week, I was sooooo close to finishing the wolfs and the night goblin boss, but it will take just a little longer to finish some of the smaller details and to get the water effect just right on the wolves.  Any last minute advice on them PLEASE get in the comments in the next 24 to 48 hours as I plan to try and get them done in that timeframe.  On Orcs 2 and 3 it is pretty much just base coats... going to have to start taking them seriously pretty soon because seeing them all ranked up nicely like that just does not scream Orc warriors to me... going to have to do something to really get them chaotic (in the orderly sense) looking.  Also, need to find their command group,,, I am sure I have some appropriate models somewhere.  For the Night Goblin Boss, he is really close to being done, just some very minor details that I missed on him that I need to hit (a piece of his cloak, some of the armour bits that I decided to color mid painting, etc).  On the Giant, just the leather straps and the lion head got some attention.

OGRES/BRETONNIA:  Did some leather bits on Ironguts 1 and 2.  Primered and based Pegasus Knight 1.

MORTALS/DEMONS OF CHAOS:  No updates.

SKAVEN/LIZARDS:  No updates.  Primerd and based Skink 1.

EMPIRE:  No updates.

VAMPS/TOMB KINGS:  No updates.  Primered and based the Tomb Prince.

ELVES:  Primered and based HE Archer 1.  Also, hit the model with a base coat to get in idea of where to go with it.  Right now, I am looking at a green white combo, we'll see.  I want to do something a bit different than the normal blue/white... especially since that is my primary colors for the dwarfs.

DWARFS:  Prepared a base for the Anvil model.

BEASTS:  No updates.

Till next week!

This week brings us to an Ogre update and the very first update for Bretonnia.  I did not get nearly as much done as I had hoped, and won't get anything done this coming up week as I will be completely out of the loop for work... so the next update will be two weeks from now.  In any case, I got the Pegasus Knight base coated for the most part, really just trying to figure out what colors I want to use.  Right now I am thinking red and yellow, with black and white accents.  Was thinking to use a standard design across the army, as the story line is going to center around a crusader type army, but I think the cross is not so much fitting.  It is supposed to be a fantasy army, so I will have to dig up an original design with the same concept, maybe using the lady of the lake as the centerpiece for the "religious" bit. Any suggestions?

On the Ogres, I got the whites, purples and skin pretty much where it needs to be, probably another highlight on those.  The red is just base coated, as is the wood bits, and metals.  So, still lots and lots to do to get them finished, but I should be there by the next Ogre update.

Mortals/Daemons of Chaos:  Primed and based a bloodletter model.  Posted some pictures of the gargoyles that were originally made for my Chaos Undivided army before the rules change a few years back, still a unit that I have a lot of pride in.  As I mentioned, I won't be around for the update next Sunday, but I intend to try and get the  Demon prince and five marauders completed before then.

Skavens/Lizards:  No painting updates.  For the lizards, I am going to go for realistic reptilian colors, so the entire army won't be a singular scale color, if that makes sense.  Looking at pics of skinks on line, the most common is a blue skink, some with bright tails and black stripes so I will likely go with that angle.  Suggestions?

Empire:  No updates.

Vamps/Tomb Kings:  No updates.

Elves:  No updates.

Dwarves:  No updates.

Beasts:  No updates.  I need to get the thread up with more pics of Khazrak and his individual background story.

Orcs and Goblins:  Pulled out an Orc Warboss model to paint and be in charge of that huge mob of orcs.  Also, pulled out a snotling pump wagon, will try to get  it put together.  I need to post the updated pics of the wolf riders, night goblin boss, and a chariot model that I painted a few years back that I am adding to the army.

See you in two weeks!

The painting on the ogre's trousers is exceptional, really it is top notch. The highlighting is exceptional and overall your work is really outstanding, you should be well pleased with the really high standard you can achieve.
If I continue to paint for the rest of my life I doubt I will be able to pull of some of the level of work that you are creating. Your work is up there with the amazing Orcogre army created by another member.
Outstanding stuff mate.

The trip went really well, I wish I could talk more about it, but suffice it to say it was a huge success. Of course, between that and coming down with the crud, I did not get nearly as much done as I had wanted, but I did get something done. I finished Abyst, so I will get him posted up in the Demons Army page in the next day or so. For Marauders 11-15 the only thing left is bone, base, and sharpen up the metallic a bit, but they are pretty close to done, then on to the last 5 to complete the unit. The Ogre is getting pretty close as well, same items left to get done, then on to #2 of 3. The Bloodletter only has a basecoat of red and brown with a wash of black so far.

No updates for any of the other armies, but I will list them anyway so I don't lose track of which army is next!

This weeks update brings us to skaven and lizards.  On the Skaven Lord, I finished up the rat skin saddle bits, both  underneath the rider and in front where the chains connect to.  I also added another highlight to the skin, but still not completely happy with it.  Needs more gore!  On the skaven troopers, I did up the bases for the next two and applied a skin and brown base coat.  The skink test model is pretty much done, some very minor details to touch up... thoughts?  Is it the right direction?  I have a suspicion that I will use other colors for other units, or at least between the types of lizard troops.

This week proved to be another with very little done, maybe about 3 hours of painting total.  Brings us to the empire update. For the mortar crew I worked the red and yellow wood bits on the mortar, worked the white bits, added some skulls to the front of the mortar. On the hero, I hit the white bits again an worked the armor a little. On the knights, I worked the armor a little bit. For the banner bearer, I started working what might become the banner, depending on how it turns out and the reviews it gets here. This is my first banner that I am making on parchment, so we will see. So far, its just a base coat, and obviously needs highlights and outlines.

This week gets us back to Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts. The right leg (as it is in the mini, not as you see it), and the right arm are complete- the rest of him still needs some polish but those two bits are what the rest of him will end up looking like. Still not sure about the glowing green on the inside of him... maybe if I go back and turn the red gem on the lower sword to green? For the Tomb Prince, pretty much just base coated. Was trying to get a feel for the colors. On Skeles 1-3, I worked the weapons and metal bits up with some rust. I thought they were done, but looking at the pics I think the need something more. Finally, I pulled out a skeleton champion to add to the VC army.

Well, this week brings us to the first ever Elves update!  Keep in mind that these three miniatures still have a LOT of work left before they are done... but I am already a week and a day late in posting.  One other note, I do not like the white background... but also wanted to try something different from the grey

The Wood Elves get a treeman, made by Ultraforge Miniatures.  So far, he has a few browns and quite a bit of grey, but this big guy is going to be a lot of work.

For the Dark Elves, I have chosen an older Games Workshop Sorceress.  So far, I have fleshed out the flesh and purples, but both still need a lot of work.

For the High Elves, we are starting with a unit of shooters.  Not sure if I am in love with the color scheme, seams like he needs something more... maybe after I get everything else colored up.  Want to deviate from the blue color scheme, but we will see...

So, thoughts or critiques?
