I had a chance to catch a game at my local Gee-Dubya shop (Seattle Battle Bunker) against a nice guy who wielded High Elves. He had just started an Empire army, but he had a pre-established 1500pt. list for his High Elves which he had, so I pulled out my 1500-ish list that I've played a few times against the Dark Elves opponent of my previous reports.
This game was just way too awesome to pass up writing a BR for. I have the Battle Chronicler, but it's kinda complicated and I'm rather tired, so, forgive me for another egregiously long post.
Simple layout of the field, a hill in each corner, from my left to right, there was an impassable terrain piece halfway on the board about 3" from the side edge, two forests about evenly split with one on my side and one on his (probably 10" from each board edge on that side), a ruined tower near the dead center which we called impassable terrain, and two rocky patches declared as difficult terrain (one about middle of the right flank, one further back and to the left of it a bit, about 7" apart).
OGRES list! again, I apologize, but I don't have my points handy at this time,
again...
Slaughtermaster - Gold Sigil Sword, Enchanted Shield, Dragonbane Gem, Dispel Scroll
Firebelly - AHW, Level2, The Other Trickster's Shard
Bruiser - BSB, IF, HA, Crown of Command
6 Ironguts - Music, Standard, Flaming Banner (
proved to be a bad choice ipso facto) -
All characters here!11 Gnobs - Trappers
3 Mournfang Cav - Music, Standard, Dragonhide, IF, HA
3x1 Sabretusk
Ironblaster
TOTAL - 1498.5
His list, totalling at 1497
Archmage - Level 4, High Magic, Magic Item that gave him +1 Spells
Noble - BSB, really good armor, Dragonbane Gem
(note: remember which banner I picked? lol)11 Archers
20 Archers
Archmage was here at first20 Phoenix Guard
19 White Lions
BSB hereGiant Eagle
For magic, I rolled Toothcracker, Braingobbler, and The Maw, and kept (
I don't know why lol) with my SMaster, and I rolled double 1s for the Firebelly so I just took the signature and had Fireball and Flaming Cloak. He ended up with all the High magic spells except for #3.
Deployment:
My left to right:
Sabretusk Gutstar Sabretusk between the forest and ruined tower, Mournfang just around the other side of ruined tower, Gnobs Sabretusk and Ironblaster on the extreme right flank.
His right to left (so my left to right on his side):
Phoenix Guard, White Lions, 20 Archers, Eagle, 10 Archers, pretty much lined up in a row.
He got the +1, but I got the initiative and went first.
Ogres t1:Movement: barreled forward, moving each of my Sabres to the forward flanks of my Gutstar that settled between the forest and ruins. Swung the Mournfang around the building, marched the Gnobs forward around the rockpiles, and double-backed my rightwing Sabre behind the frontlines, knowing it'd just be shot apart by archers. I inched the Ironblaster forward to get a good view of his battleline...
Magic: Got a good number of dice, casted the big bubble Toothcracker and achieved it, affecting the star, the center Tusk, and the Mournfang. Rolled a 1 on my lore attribute and took a wound. Fireball was dispelled.
Shooting: Cannonshot bounced and slayed the Eagle (
First Blood!) as well as one of the large pack of archers. Success!
HElves b1:Movement: moved Phoenixguard around the trees towards my left flank, marched White Lions through the trees (lost a couple to Dangerrain), inched back big archers and moved forward small archers in an attempt to chaffblock the Mournfang.
Magic: He rolled double one's and I channeled. That was all there was to that lol
Shooting: The center Sabretusk became a porcupine after the large archer barrage, and two Gnobs were snubbed by the small archer barrage. Pokey pokey!
Ogres t2:Movement: Charged Gutstar into White Lions, got a 10 on the charge! Moved left Sabre to chargeblock the Guard, swung the Mournfang around the building again, marched right Sabre forward to try and dodge the arrows from the small archers, rolled the IBlaster and Gnobs closer to the small archers; they were in grapeshot range, mwahaha!
Magic: I rolled 3. Managed to get Toothcracker off on just the Ironguts, as well as Fulminating Flame Cloak, causing 2 White Lions to burn. Forgot to roll for lore.
Shooting: Grapeshot the Archers, took out ONLY 3. Held from the panic.
CC: Brought the BSB to the front and kept the FBelly in second rank. My SMaster could only hit the bsb, who happened to have a 4+/2++, so yeah, because of flaming attacks the BSB was untouchable. I won combat by a few, took out 7 lions and lost a 'gut, he held easily. Go go Grindfest!
HElves b2:Movement: Left Phoenixguard due to Sabreblock, pulled archmage out of archers and hid behind forest, moved archers forward to receive the inevitable Mournfang charge, backed up the small archers.
Magic: He rolled a good number of dice, but missed on the big 6-spell by like 2, so it ended his casting early. However, he used the remainder of the dice to dispel Flame Cloak.
Shooting: Shot at Mournfang with big unit, did 1 wound (shocking, I know

), shot at Sabretusk and only managed 1 wound with the smaller archers.
CC: I decided, since I wasn't going to get anywhere with the SMaster in combat eitherway, I had him challenge, to which his unit champion accept (
ohcrapohcrapohcrap lol), and made way with the FBelly prior to that, so his nasty BSB started smacking him up; crushed the champ in the challenge tho

Won combat again and he held, but he was left with only 4 lions and the BSB left.
Ogres t3:Movement: Rearranged the left Sabre better, moved the Right Sabre behind the small archers to attempt a panic test Dangerrain (
totally misplaced him lol). Inched the IBlaster forward again. I charged with the Mournfang, and we had a small rules dispute.
So, quick pause. With the Dragonhide banner, it states that you get to reroll 1's on saving throws "with a successful charge." Well, does that then apply to armor saves for Stand and Shoot? Because I rolled four 1's out of five dice on my
2+ armor save. We asked the employee on hand, and they said the successful charge occurs before the reaction of Stand and Shoot resolves; so, I got to reroll and save all of them.
Was that played correctly? Someone correct me on that please! That really was a big game-changer depending on the ruling.
ANYways...
Magic: Toothcracker big bubble again, along with the Flamecloak again! Toasted 2 more. Healed a wound on the SMaster.
Shooting: Grapeshot the archers down to one, who fled. Away from the Ironblaster. And completely past my Sabretusk who was looking in the wrong direction. I felt like a derpasaurus rex there lol
CC: Issued another challenge, which was a
HUGE mistake. He had to accept, and although the rest of his unit was wiped, he was able to hold, and so my SMaster was stuck in an unwinnable challenge, waiting for his Phoenixguard to show up... Oops... Oh, and the Mournfang smashed apart a good chunk of the archers (and by Mournfang, I mean the actual Mournfang: the riders flailed helplessly, the little elves were apparently too hard for them to reach without their great weapons

), and they
rolled Double ONES to hold. Blah.
HElves b3:Movement: Charged Phoenixguard into Sabretusk. Rearranged his archmage, and the lone archer fled s'more.
Magic: Casted the 5+ward save on his BSB, which was silly since he had a 2+ wardsave to the flaming attacks (he realized this too and we laughed a bit), did the phoenix burn on the unit, caused a wound, and I scrolled the big-6spell that was targetting my general's Gold Sigil Sword.
Shooting: none
CC: Phoenixguard minced up the Tusk, reformed to face the Gutstar flank, Archers were whooped by the Mournfang (beasts) again and sent running, which the cavalry easily overran and went to the opposite side of the forest where the grindfest is happening, and the BSB continues to spank my SMaster for being a twit and challenging him. Somewhere in all this (either my turn or his, I don't remember) the Firebelly is chopped down also, so I lose the flaming cloak.
Ogres t4:Movement: No charges, moved the Mournfang into the forest to prepare for a countercharge against the Phoenix flank, swung the last Sabre around, and marched the IBlaster towards the fray. The Gnobs decide to stay in spot and pick their noses for the rest of the game (literally, I had no reason to move them at that point lol).
Magic: I get like 6 dice, and desperate to heal with the lore attribute, I cast the Maw. And I roll double 6's with three dice. So, I managed to eat 2 Phoenixguard, heal a wound, and lose 2 levels, the Maw, and Toothcracker (
D'oh!). Darnit! I practically gave him the magic phase for the rest of the game!
Shooting: The Mournfang pop their banner on the Phoenixguard, and although it caused no wounds, the hits still caused them to lose their ASF and denying them rerolls in the ensuing combat. the Gnobs threw sharp stuff at the rocks. They enjoyed it.
CC: No luck against the BSB, and my flank is left wide open for the Phoenix charge. BTW, I kept winning the combats due to static rez (ha, can you believe that?), but being that he was the BSB he kept rerolling and holding himself.
HElves b4:Movement: Poo hits the fan, and by that I mean the Phoenixguard hit home into my flank. The lone archer rallies! Ohz Noez!
Magic: He gets a solid phase, casts the 5+ ward on the BSB
again... I won't complain lol. The Phoenixburn hurts my guts s'more, and he gets the 6+spell off, breaking my Gold Sigil Sword and allowing his BSB to reroll missed hits now. Oh, dear...
Shooting: shoots at something with the lone archer to no avail. I don't even remember what or if he remembered to shoot for that matter lol
CC: Made way with my BSB, and the unit managed to hold against the Phoenixflank with the Crown of Command on my BSB

my Smaster hangs on with a prayer!
Ogres t5:Movement: In comes the cavalry! Mournfang charge (no Dangerrain wounds, yay) the Phoenix, and the Sabre charges the flank of the BSB even though he's still in a challenge. Moved the IBlaster forward to deal with that meddlesome archer... Oh, and the Gnobs grew wings and began flying around my right flank. *COUGH*...

Magic: I attempt Braingobbler for the sake of the wound heal. He easily dispels it.
Shooting: 4 Str10 grapeshots to one archer which turned into vapor.

CC: My general finally goes down in his challenge (no overkill), as well as my BSB to the Phoenixguard. However, I managed enough to make his Phoenix break (but not his BLEEPING BSB!!!) and run from the Ironguts, which the Mournfang chased down and chopped up. There are now 3 Ironguts (and the stupid flaming banner) and a wounded Sabretusk against his BSB. Guess what?
HElves b5:Movement: moved his archmage a bit, woo.
Magic: I think he casted the 6+spell and broke the Dragonhide banner, I don't remember anything else.
Shooting: n/a
CC: He splits his attacks, and kills the Sabre and one Gut. The other two flail helplessly at him with their
FLAMING attacks. He breaks them and actually manages to overrun them, barely missing the ruins.
Ogres t6:Movement: Thankfully, his overrun was not enough! I was able to move the IBlaster forward enough to get his BSB within 12" hehehe *EVILSMILE* . Turned the Mournfang to face the Archmage so that he couldn't flankcharge if he wanted to lol
Shooting: Rolled a 10!!!! Did 7 wounds!!! That WEREN'T
FLAMING!!!! So he went down in a blaze of shrapnel glory.
HElves b6:With only his Archmage left, he marched to within an inch of the Mournfang, casted the magic missiles and finished off one, and missed on another spell.
Thus, at game's end, He only had his general, and I had my Mournfangs, IBlaster, and my flying Gnoblars who could at that point shoot lasers out of their eyes and breathe firey ice out of their armpits. They were pretty much amazing.

... After tallying up the bonus points, I ended up 106.5 points ahead; A Victory!!!
Final Notes:
God, why did I do this before bed? It's midnight now lol... ANYways, I was VERY happy with the Ironblaster, which never misfired (at first I seemed to do nothing but misfire with these dice; now they're playing more nicely

). I was also impressed with my Mournfang, who managed to make a lot of Leadership checks successfully outside the general/BSB bubble (even without the Standard of Discipline!). I didn't properly kit out my characters, but that comes with experience. Plus, if I had put more thought into it, there was no logical reason to bring the Flaming Banner; I had it against the Dark Elves to scare off his Hydras, but really it hurt me much worse in this game; I would've easily crushed his BSB if it weren't for that crazy ward save!! Also, I had no ward saves on my characters! I don't know why I did that! lol... Finally, I was ecstatic with the Gnoblars, who happened to
not get themselves killed; however, they have been very ineffective in my recent games. Granted, I haven't had much in the way of enemy chaff that my Gnobs could hold up. They're there for a reason, but the reason's not coming in these games. Oh well!

Okay, I'm tired, peace out y'all. Oh, and one day, I'll hopefully paint and post my Cassanova Maneater. One day...
