Esteemed Ogres!  :maw:

As part of the "Feast of Glory" project, I am looking to run an event I like to refer to as the "Paint 'n' Trade". Other forums have run them in the past, to much success and positive clamour, so I figured it would be a great idea to implement around these parts.

What is it?
The concept is simple; you choose a model, any model, and build, paint and base it to the very best of your abilities. You are then randomly drawn another one of the entrants, and you ship your model off to them, and receive one from someone else. So, effectively, you lose a model and gain a model.

Why?
It's a chance to build a community spirit, and a rapport with your fellow Ogres. The buzz and hype is exactly what we want round these parts again, and the banter that these events tend to generate (look at the March of the Hunters competition for a perfect example of this!) is what makes being an active part of a forum so great and so rewarding! Not to mention, it gets you painting, gives you an incentive to raise your game, and you still gain something out of it... A Stronghold keepsake if you will.

The rules/fine-print?
Each participant will supply their own model(s), paints and required accessories. All participants will carry any costs involved, including materials and shipping to the participant drawn to receive their model. Whilst Work in Progress shots are mandatory, they are preferred, as we are trying to generate a bit of to-and-fro, a little banter. These pictures will help do just that. Most importantly, this is about the spirit of trust and generosity. If you don't wanna part with a mode, and that is fine, please don't feel obligated to enter only to withdraw at too late a stage to rectify it.

So, whose up for it? Names in the comments please :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
What kind of timeline should we expect?
I would leave that open to debate, but my initial thought would be 1 month from the start date, which would be once we have enough interest/committed parties :)

I'm going to guess that we all have to do the same model? I.E. everyone does a Bull, or a Maneater, etc.

Also, at what point would we know who we're shipping to? Would it be immediately, or maybe a couple weeks in, so as to encourage everyone to check out each other's pics to see what they're possibly getting?

Actually, I had originally planned to suggest people can pick whatever they want. Within reason, of course. Don't want someone sending a Magma Dragon, and receiving a single Gnoblar in return. But, I also didn't want it to feel stale or too repetitive, so I figured giving people free license on what model they do should help inspire some great work and keep it interesting and fresh :)

As for when do you find out who, I would think it probably best right from the beginning. Just so you can see progress shots, and just generally feel a lot more involved in the model. Although, I'd be open to suggestions on this :)

Pretty much open on everything right now. I have put down what I think the bare bones of the vent should be, and am keen to hear interest and thoughts :)

it sounds like a great idea and I'd be totally up for it but I think there should be , how do I put this , a minimum requirement ? say at the very least a bull and if people want to send more then thats their call just so that nobody ends up with (as you said) a single gnoblar

Definitely agree with this :) Basically, I don't want to discourage people from sending models from other armies, but at the same time I don't want people feeling like they be been shortchanged :)

You say it, i'll play it, baby!

I'm excited already! Oh the possibilities! We can do conversions? And any Ogre or other models? Our own expense?

Oh goody! Tell me who I've got and i'll make them a corker!

i think if this actually happens is ill take apart one of my unpainted bulls clean all the glue off it and convert it up into something awesome haha xD because why not its a chance to show other members what i (everyone) is capable of so for any show offs out there (not me of course because im so modest ;) ) its a brilliant opportunity

I have been part of the warhammer-empire.com "pleasant surprise" which follows a similar idea. The main difference being that you know who you will send to before you make the model, that way you can stalk them and build something that will fit into their army.

As far as value of what people do I think is up to the giftee, some people are more generous than others for sure, but in this community I can see everyone getting into the spirit of it.

One issue that usually comes up in the "pleasant surprise" is giftees taking too long...I think we should have a dealine to finish, after that we can start poking anyone who is late to ensure they finish up.

I would be interested in being part of this, but almost any standard model I recieve in return wouldn't fit with the Rhinogres....I'd also love to convert something up to suit someone's army, so I would prefer to be able to stalk my victim :)

Long and short, whatever is decided I'm in :)

This sounds great! I'm in.
Count me in gents.  Sounds like fun!

I think what would be good would be to set a general category, i.e. Monstrous Infantry model, or maybe like 5 Infantry models, or something like that. That way, it could be anything persay, but then everyone's getting roughly the same mileage out of the project. So, I could send a Bull, receive an Irongut, and someone else may get a Maneater, etc.

Also, I guess it'd be better to know who's getting who upfront, that way you can get to know one another better and actually build some of that community aspect that we're looking to build through this project.

However, one more question: Do we just paint, or is a full basing considered a part of the package, too? I'd be a bit nervous with the basing part, simply because I'd feel weird to have one model in a unit having a completely different basing from the rest of the unit, whereas if I just got a painted model with no basing done, I can then base it and fit it into the rest of my army. But, if we want to add basing too, that'd be no problem :)

---

As for the project, put me down as a "maybe" ;) with a bit more finalized guidelines I'd be willing to contribute! I'll watch this thread closely and see if I have the courage to doom someone with one of my paintjobs :P lol j/k

Ok, I am currently hobby MIA, however - this is a great initiative. I think a great way to regulate this (if not for this time but next) would be to say go for a single, unmounted character model. The cost for each entrant being roughly the same regardless of army choice (excluding ogres of course!) and giving each entrant the chance to truly show off some painting skills and even conversion if they so desire. I'm sure the future life of these models will be well documented from the receiving members on the forum!

Exciting stuff either way! :)

Count me in
i voted for monstrous infantry but let me elaborate I think that it should be monstrous infantry as a minimum (due to this being the OGRE stronghold) that way everyone knows what they are getting, bare minimum, however that does not mean to say that, should some forum members be feeling more generous they cannot give more as that would be up to them because i think that it shouldn't be too restrictive on what people can make/send as its all about showing other member what we are capable of but at the same time we don't want people ending up with say a single gnoblar. But that's just my 2 pence

Awesome!

I voted mon.inf. as ogres just have so many conversion opportunities and this is the ogre forum : )

I initially thought of this as people get paired up so each person can give some input to the figure they receive. I mean, I'd love the idea of a future man eater unit with figure painted by various members from here - but that'd take at least some communication to make the bases somewhat uniform and at least part of the color scheme work out.

If it's worth anything I'd like to convert and paint a man eater and receive one back : )

I'm in - of course!

I like this idea, everyone makes a maneater from their army, send it to a single member for common basing then auction it off.

Not to derail this thread.

For the sake of memory, would it be possible to send a mass-PM to all participants when this starts?

I'll more likely see the "[1]" by my Messages than read a forum post that may get lost in the "unread topics" subheading :P

Alright guys, names are drawn, and I am thinking of a finish date of 1 month from this Sunday, meaning the official finish date is the 20th of May.

As for the models, because they haven't been decided yet. I don't like the idea of being too prescriptive, my end at least, on what people want to do. So, my suggestion is for you to discuss it with your partner, and decide between you your thoughts on the subject matter :) Personally, I will probably be doing two Maneaters, if that helps make up your minds? :)

I feel like a total slacker! I have my idea mapped out and I know what bits I need to be able to put together a decent Maneater for Randroid. I decided not to go with a BSB as my last attempt at one of these for my own army was such a disaster that I still haven't let him see the light of day.
(seriously, I'd rather go without a BSB than let mine out of the box....)

I will start posting pictures of my progress as soon as I get paid! Then it is all systems go!

As it turns out I didn't have a spare ogre body for converting, so it was off the FLGS where I just had to pick up another battalion... once I get it all put together I should have enough core to legally field my entire 9000+ point collection... :D

Currently my project for the executor is mid surgery, all sorts of things being cut up and put back together in exciting new ways!
Still a bit of work to do but you can see what im aiming for.

HOWEVER ! i have built the model ! which for me is quite surprising as i have a tendancy to procrastinate, i must have changed the idea and what i was doing several times before i finally settled on what was going into this model , i guess i made it up as i went along for the most part , just swishing around in the bitz box for inspiration

TO THEVIKING: as i said i have built the model but am yet to paint it, would you like to see how it looks before paint or would you like to keep it a surprise, also is there any particular colour scheme your army is working with or can i just paint it any colours ?

Sounds exciting! I'm eager to see it, put up a pic! I've got a bit more building to get yours done and then I'll put up a pic as well.

My army is old fashioned grey skin and blue pants. I've put some pictures up here and there, if you search my post history you can probably find some.
well i think first of all i need to make a confession... i actually made 2 models prior to this one for you but i liked them too damn much  i made a chaos maneater/death butcher and a firebelly but then i decided no, what im going to make is something that will remind theviking of who made this model and so i decided to base it around my name "the executor" yes your model is the chief executor for the ogre stronghold, sent out by the overtyrant hragged to deal with rebellious tyrants or misbehaving butchers, his giant two handed blade which was given to him by hragged for his service to the stronghold was previously owned by a daemon prince of khorne which hragged slaughtered in single combat, this gargantuan blade even by ogre standards is much too heavy for any normal ogre to lift yet when bestowed upon the executor (as nobody knew his real name) he grabbed the shaft firmly in both hands and raised it high, the daemon sword accepted its new owner and bestowed onto him great strength to more easily deal a deadly blow to those who would go against the stronghold, however being the chief executor he didn't always rely on his blade to deal justice, he has an entire arsenal of methods by which to maim kill or torture and he carries them all to battle with him tied around his belt, everything from rope for hangings to an ogre pistol for a firing squad, he comes well equipped for any situation, the executor also has a gnoblar which he raised himself, he trained this gnoblar to be stronger than the rest as he would need this gnoblar to pull the executors cauldron, this small cauldron (by ogre standards at least) would be filled to the brim with the severed heads of ogres that had turned against the stronghold and would be dragged behind the executor wherever he went as a deterrent for would be rebels .... i present "the executor" complete with accompanying "cauldron of severed heads"

going into this i was quite worried as i knew that other people would be doing all sorts of awesome stuff like cutting stuff up and modelling things with greenstuff and i thought that due to my lack of skill with greenstuff that my attempts to create an awesome model just by kit-bashing would fail miserably, however i am rather pleased with the results as i think it represents the fluff to my own army rather well and so will allow the viking to have a little slice of the executors within his own army and if there is one thing i love more than kit bashing its writing fluff so making up the back story for this guy was also quite nice ^_^

i hope you like it theviking and although i have never had any experience with painting the grey skin i will give it my best shot (how do you do it ? just so that it looks as close as possible to fit in) and if my paint job is absolutely terrible (which unfortunately is quite likely) feel free to paint over it :P

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Nice work, loving the Gnoblar with his head basket. The executor model is looking good too. keep it up!

thanks guys  oh and if anyone was wondering what the other 2 models look like that i just couldnt give away they will be going up on my gnoblog at some point either today or tomorrow

*edit* they are up now :)

Looking very good Executor.
As for cutting stuff up and using green stuff it was my first time too. But its really not that tricky, just give it a go.Mine isnt perfect but i will only get better with practice :)
Well, others are posting their WIPs, so here's at least a bit of a teaser for mine:

These are some of the bits that I'm planning on working with for the Maneater. My original planned theme is somewhat morphing however, but I like where it's going. He currently has his boots, gutplate, arms (no
hands) and head on.

Don't worry about the giant, he was actually a part of another project that I'm working on (which I'm going to debut in my gnoblog soon, maybe even tomorrow morning...?)

Note: I may not use all the parts listed, and I may choose to add more parts later on. But, I have a pretty awesome idea brewing, I'm just hoping I can execute it properly. (And not "execute" as with a huge daemonsword that looks awesome btw :P)
33 Gnobs! Over 3 Packs of Trappers! Woot!
Gibblet, Nibblet, Crunchybit (from Slaughtermaster achievement)

New book WLD: 20/10/2 - Yay tourney wins and random game win!

Here's the progress on the Maneater of Khorne for Sazel. Next step is cleanup a bit before base coating.

i decided that the model didnt quite look ... whats the word ... extravegant ? no that makes it sound like a wedding ... erm ... beefy ? ... hmm i guess i felt there jsut wasnt enough to him to make him stand out ... am i making any sense here or am i going crazy ?  either way ive added a few things to him to make him appear more as a lord/hero choice than a measly irongut who found a cool sword, but they will be a surprise for now ;) i have a special idea in mind  :P

@the executor; I think you may be over-thinking this a bit and worrying too much. Your not entering a Golden Daemon comp!
Try just coming up with a concept/ idea then looking at the stuff you have around you and making it fit what you want to do. The most important thing (for me) would be getting a suitable base-model from which you can work. Once you have a decent basis from which to work the rest comes pretty easy (ish).
I wouldn't worry too much about the "what other people may think" or trying to impress people, so long as you (and the person you are sending it to) are happy that's all that matters.
think of it like this; you are building someone a free (ish) model and painting it up for them...this gesture alone makes you an outstanding individual. Don't stress too much about it and don't heap loads of pressure on yourself mate. I liked the big sword dude!

G_H
Made some nice progress on my ME for Neezy.  I need to do some green stuff tomorrow and I'll post some pics.
It looks great executor, he'll be a perfect addition my maneater unit. One of the things I am liking most about this event is that we get to see bits from armies we don't own. I would never have a giant daemon sword like that floating around my bitz box so all my GW's are kitbashed from ogre parts... but now I have a unique variety piece!

As for paint I usually just do few layers of grey with black then brown washes. Nothing too fancy, usually comes out a bit messy and mottled which I personally like the effect but some people have told me I need to work on my shading and highlights. Meh, ogres are supposed to be dirty and messy deal with it. I've never painted flesh tone skin on ogres so this will be a new experience for me too.

I didn't get as much hobby time this weekend as I wanted but I'm mostly done building, just a few bitz here and there and I'll get a pic up. Hopefully in the next day or two.
Finished! (well, kind of...)

Actually he is not quite finished, purely because I forgot all about this little guy;

No discerning Maneater can be without his buddy (even if, in this case, he never buys a round). As soon as this little guy is done then I am too.

Randroid; I did the base skirt Graveyard earth, which is pretty standard. I can do it a different colour if you want. I will be posting within the next 7 days so PM me you address and he will be on his way! Oh, last thing; do you want him assembled or did you want me to leave Ogre, base and Gnobler separate for you to put together yourself?
More pictures on my Gnoblog.

Right, where is that half finished chaos siege giant....

G_H

Looks great!

I can't recall what brown I painted my bases so that color works nicely. If it is easier to ship/safer disassembled would be fine. I'll post some photos of your mini later today or tomorrow! Still scrambling to have him done this month.

Ha! Don't worry buddy..no stress at this end; whenever he is ready will be fine by me. I may send in the 2/ or 3 parts then just because I don't want him to get damaged on his long journey to the US.

I am glad you like it, I think that actually worried me more than anything during building the guy if I am honest.

Also, and this can only be born out of actual evidence; he actually looks allot better up-close and personal than he does in the pictures. You just cant capture all the rust, verdigrises', rot, finite details etc in a photo...I did spend a couple of weeks just trying to do barrels and incidental weapons...muppet!

G_H
Barrels are hard to paint!! I've painted loads of them for my army....

Here is where the Maneater for you stands today - just basecoats so far.

Gives you the idea of the colors I am working towards anyway!

p.s. I noticed we used the same head on each of the minis! Not sure if this was accidental or what.... but I like it!

Some fantastic work going on in this thread. I have really enjoyed this event :)
Randroid, where did you get the chain on his weapon?
Neezy, Og-Tanian is on his way!  I hope he contributes to many feasts!
I added the chain... it is from a jewelry section in a craft store though I couldn't tell you which one. Got it a long time ago.

That Giant slayer is looking awesome Randroid; I can't wait to see him finished and more over get him onto the table.
I haven't really used Maneaters before, but I have a run of games coming up with a friend who has a pretty sizable WE army (and sadly, a new army book) so I am thinking this guy is going to be invaluable in kicking some tree-hugging butt!

G_H
randroid that maneater looks badass !!! yet for some reason it makes me want to say "I PITY THE FOOL WHO TRIES TO STEP BETWEEN ME AND MY FOOD !" goodness knows why ;)

Og-tanian has arrived and in perfect condition.
Cheers Ibisson, he will take pride of place in my Ogre cabinet :)
Sent Randroid his Bulgar the Bladdered today. If the idea of Maneaters is that they travel, well some of these guys will have travelled a long way!

Putting the finishing touches on yours! Hope to get it in the post next week.

Popped in to see what was being done in this thread as I'm involved in a similar exchange on Warhammer Empire, some nice Ogres being swapped, well done guys.
No Ogres yet but take a look at:
DAEMONS of TZEENTCH
BEASTMEN

The Physics of Chariots!
I havent been able to get hold on Just-Josh for our swap - I hope nothing major has happen and life is just taking it's normal time. But if any of you know him IRL please poke him or let me know : )
Gnoblar Gnoblog
Neezy I am glad Og-tanian made the journey in one piece.  I hope you feed him well!

Haven't seen my pirate yet but I am sure it will show up soon.
Hi Neezy,
The Pirate Ogre showed up in perfect condition!  Looks great, I'll mix him into my ManEaters soon.

Also, thanks for the bonus pistols and Gnoblar Rat Rider.  I'll post pix of the Gnoblar once I get him painted up.
He's here! (Well, been here for a couple weeks now, finally getting around to posting :P)

The axehead broke off at the handle part, but I think I managed to pin it back up alright. It's a little off-center now, but that's my own fault for being terrible at pinning. Plus, I'm not going to super-glue the head back on; with the pinning, it just makes him really easy to transport! :P

But I really like him! Thanks Lord Rex!

Excellent news Ibisson. I look forward to seeing the Gnoblar rat rider.
My Maneater from Randroid arrived today; he is excellent and will be a great addition to my ogres.

Here he is with one of his new unit;

Thank you so much mate!

Nice

Its good to see these guys making to their new homes.
Alacard88 was actually the first to send by my reckoning, but unfortunately the package ended up back with him so he is trying again. Hopefully his one shouldn't be too far from its new home.
