I want to show you my work, and my army progress! At this moment I only have one bull's ogre unit (6 ogres) and one ironguts unit (5 ogres), but they are 3 more ironguts, 4 leadbelchers, one master slaughterer, one thundertusk and one ironblaster
well... here it goes!!!
Those grass bases are only for a short time, I will change it for lava bases when i've got time to do that

I think you should probably use a solid chunk of pine or build a ramp out of wood. Alternatively a piece of styrene foam and cover it with paper mashae or putty which you then sculpt. Basically it needs to light and sturdy.
Actions speak louder than words, unless your eating a mime of course.
Tobgoblin07 Dec 2011
Foam + hot wire cutter and cover with woodmans plaster afterwards is probably the easiest way to get a craggy rock.

Layers of cork board is the easiest. You do need to ensure that the sides of the layers line up, and probably scrape up the top layer that the thundertusk would be on so it's not smooth, but that is what I use for my lava bases with my ogres, and it works great.

They look fantastic mate; well done they're actually not disimilar to how I did my last lot (not to mention how I'll be doing my new 'propper' lot!)
The Lava bases look very cool and really pop-but is it just me, or is there nothing wrong with your grass bases?
I know the grass doesn't fit in with the lava units, but it looks fine to me (not to mention thats how I tend to do my figs as well...ahem!)
Keep it up!

bases look pretty awesome...i just don't understand how they'd work in real life...do the ogres wait for their enemies to float by whilst standing on the rocks?
I do know it's a fantasy game though

looking pretty sweet dude! may i ask why the steel colour has a blue effect on it? As far as i'm aware, steel doesn't have a patina/verdigris effect...that is if it's even meant to be that!

Thundertusk is coming along nicely, liking the fur/skin!
anvalous06 Feb 2012
The coloration of the eyes on those maneaters is particularly effective. Well done! The thundertusk shows much promise...

Really like the Thundertusk, very diffrent to the norm and the blue looks especially eye catching! Nice and crisp and clean as well! Just realised as well, the Leadbelcher doesn't have a cut down barrel, it's another of the shorter cannon I could see, but with the pic being taken from down the barrel, my eye's were deceiving me!:P Liking the Maneaters as well, do keep us posted!

great concept.. can't agree with the blue cannon on the LBs though.

That is very blue...
Whilst it looked great in the previous pictures, I'm not sure I like it on the Tusks and the Saddles. I think it may be a bit too much. It's well painted, and the blending is very well done, it just draws all the attention away from the figure.
Just an opinion!

The answer to everything is sabretusks. There is no problem that can't be solved at least in part with kitties.

you'd need alot of blue on the rest of your army i think to blend it with the rest... If he's very blue, and everything is red and firery, it would be odd a bit... no?

I like your style on the Ogres - you get a lot of effect with simple combinations and sharp contrasts. Impressive. Really means you have to be precise with your paint.
Although I must admit I like the grass better than the lava, I think the blue tusks will look very neat as contrast to the fire. I can picture it coming down from the frozen heights, crossing a stream of lava.. Oh while I'm at it, the fire on your Firebelly looks sweet - almost feels transparent on my screen..
urifici21 Feb 2012
My idea of thundertusk is a creature descending from the top of the cold mountains bacause of the war call. About the blue tusks.... well, I considered that this monster is a cold monster but he can fight across the lava to defend the ogre's interests. When I finish all the work on the bases I will post a family picture of all army.
The thundertusk base will be a combination of rocks, dust, snow and lava. You will see it soon!
I like the grass bases but I wanted to do a diferent army, an army from the mountains and the volcanos.

Those tusks are super saturated. I like it, but think it may be a bit stronger as a model with some tone-down. Maybe a leviation purple wash to add some depth? The red in the purple should help tie to the base, too.

If you look the mini at real it doesn't looks like that picture, the color aren't so bright!! really it isn't super saturated, but my phone camera takes this pictures... I will take some pictures with my camera and you will apreciate the diference!

that wood is very hard to paint imho... the texture isnt an easy one to tackle, and there's so many surface of it, no matter what you do it look weird.
Your wood is OK. The cannon and "fangs" on the side will steal the show anyway, so nobody will really notice the wood..

Forgot to mention, I LOVE this. Concept and execution are both fantastic. What a wondrous idea of magnifying/amplifying the power of a spell through a machine to create the same devastation as the ironblaster...
Have a gnoblar on me! (His name is Ricky, and if he tries to run away you have to shout RICKAAAAY in an east end London accent to get him back)
