Yellow Pants Ogres

Hi everyone,

I started a new Ogre army on the release of the new army book. lovely new models, a good reason to start playing and painting again.

My previous, Asian Ogre army (painted in 2005) can be seen in the gallery here
I decided on a total and brand new army with a different style but with the same base (in order to recycle some of the models- sabretusks and such)

painting style, through a couple of keywords:
- speedpainting (my way, this means i'll focus on getting units ready as fast as possible by a quick paint scheme)
- yellow pants.
- black armor
- lots of monsters with lots of different colours. I'm quite confident that the army will be visually pulled together by the yellow pants and skintones.

My 2K list will be something like;

- butcher, firebelly, bruiser BSB
- 8 ironguts, full kit
- 8 ogres, ironfist, full kit
- 4 ironguts, no kit
- 4 mournfang, great weapon
- 3 mournfang, no kit
- 3 leadbelchers
- 2 sabretusks
- stonehorn
- thundertusk in games over 2K

I saw the title and was bracing myself for some awfully painted yellow pants, I was happily dissapointed 

I really like the colour scheme and the skin, in the different pics the skin tone varies quite a bit.
I'm sure that's not your painting, just the lighting of the pics......which is most representive of the true skin tone IRL?

If I were to offer one bit of crit to help on the overall look I would say that the slate on the bases looks very similar to the armour and other black colours on the minis, especially on the IG unit.
It might make the models 'pop' more if it were a different colour.

the stonehorn color is pretty impressive, so is the ogres in general. I agree with FF tho, some skin color seems quite different. For example, the one on the stonehorn look almost lifelike, and the Ironguts are... yellowish?

Same goes with the last picture of the Mournfang. The unit picture, they are very nice, but the single one has a whole yellow look to it that seems to be the picture only.

Beside that, the only comment i could have is some of the metal is a bit... boring? For example, the front plate on the mournfang, just in front of the saddle... seems to lack the work that was involved with the gutplate and other piece of metal in general. Or maybe just an extra highlight/shadow..

Ooo, I like! Very nice yellow! And I like that there are some different skin tones throughout, that is just realistic. Great job!

Oh man that yellow is good. Stand out very well and makes your army pop on the field. and you say YOU SPEEDPAINT? How do you speedpaint yellow?!?! There were ways back when yellow ink existed, but I have a feeling you have another technique. Teach me master...

I'm also very impressed with the colours and am interested to know what prosses you used for the stonehorn's skin and stone ??

Too bright yellow for my taste but there is no denying the sweet layering.

An army to this standard will look sweet.

Nice paint job the yellow is just right totally eye catching just would have given the stone horn yellow pants as well.

I'm a bit flattered by the amount of reactions, cheers a lot.
So, a lot of questions to be answered... so little time...

I'll answer some questions later and wil modify this post!

How did you paint the yellows?
Over a black undercoat;
- basecoat 1: snakebite leather
- basecoat 2: Iyanden Darksun
- basecoat 3: sunburst yellow
- wash: Gryhonne sepia: a single quite heavy wash with just a single drip of water
- layer 1: sunburst yellow
- layer 2: 50/50 sunburst yellow/skull white
- layer 3: 25/75 sunburst yellow/ skull white
- layer 3: 10/90 sunburst yellow/ skull white

Sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn't (when batch painting). The only problem is the wash and basecoat drying times, that can stagnate the process.

How did you paint the stonehorn fur?
Over a black undercoat:
- Basecoat scorched Brown
- Wetbrush bestial Brown
- Wetbrush blazing orange
- Baal red wash 
- Layer blazing orange
- Layer 50/50 blazing orange/ bleached bone
- Layer 25/75 blazing orange/ bleached bone
- Layer 10/90 blazing orange/ bleached bone

This was painstaking work indeed, painting hair bij hair. The process was made easier by the excellent baal red wash. Oh, I could write books about my love for the citadel washes.

But I like the result and I'm pretty satisfied with the effect of the contrast with the black skin.

How did you paint the stonehorn stone horns?
- black basecoat
- 1 layer of a soft Jade Green drybrush
- 1 layer of a more visible Jade Green Drybrush
- 1 wash of badab black
- Soft Jade Green drybrush
- another wash of badab black
- layer of pure jade green on the raised edges, with watered down criss-cross stripes on some of the  flat areas
- layer of 50/50 jade green/ space wolves grey, on the raised edges, with watered down criss-cross stripes on some of the  flat areas
- layer of 25/75 jade green/ space wolves grey, on the raised edges,
- layer of pure space wolves grey, on the raised edges,
- glaze of badab black

Jade green is a OOP Citadel Colour, now produced by Coat d 'Arms. I like this colour  a lot, it's one of the colours I keep returning to for stone and marble effects. The colour is what it is: Jade/ Pounamu

I'm pretty satisfied with the greenish and still stone-like hue on the stone horns and the tail bit.
It could do with some more  marble effect but I realise the detail on the model isn't really suited for it.

comments on the skintones
All comments are true: the skintones are quite realistic but on some photos there seems t be a yellowish hue on the skin. That has to do with the lighting. I recently bought a photo studio and I noticed the lighting needs te be adjusted with a portion of daylight.
So IRL all of the skintones are alike, and much like the close up photo of the stonehorn rider!

Recipe for the skin as follows:
- basecoat bestial brown
- basecoat 50/50 bestial brown/ dwarf flesh
- highlight dwarf flesh
- highlight 50/50 dwarf flesh/ elf flesh
- highlight elf flesh
- liberal wash of leviathan purple
- highlight elf flesh

I, like most on here, find yellow to be a pain to paint in large sections sometimes, but these look the biz.
I've always liked the idea of yellow and black as a colour scheme (warning message from nature turned in to a subliminal warning on the games table), and these really do work.
Gonna have to nick a few ideas when I eventually get round to spending some real time painting my army instead of a few hours snatched here and there.

Nothing new here, but just a quick snapshot.

I started this army on sept the 3d.

My pledge for 3th december is
- 3 leadbelchers
- 4 ogre bulls (for the main 8  ogre unit)
- 1 butcher

Absolutely wounder full models and love the colour!  Big fan of Yellow pants myself aswell.

on the pledge; I'm considering changing it a bit because I tweaked the list in favor of a BSB and an Ironblaster. To smooth things out from heavy hitting close combat stuff to a bit more magic/shooting. watch this space, probably will come to a decision this week!

Looking great! Love the poses on the ogres using the 2 handed arms from the ironguts. Very cool.

Don't know, haven't played games with those yet. Love the models though.

Quick snapshot of today 's work, a generic tyrant/general/bruiser model.
Spent about 10-12 hours on this model, that 's about the Same amount of time I tend to spend on 4 rank and file Ogres :-)

The level of detail on this model (golgfag) is amazing and it was a joy to paint.

well then, I promised myself to have some stuff painted up by now, so here we go.

The last month I painted the following; an ironblaster, BSB, fireblly and general. The bases on these need to be adorned with static grass and other stuff.


the BSB. nothing to comment really, a quite generic BSB conversion. it's painted. enough said ;-)


Ironblaster.
This was really a pain in the bum to paint. Lovely model, but it took me a lot of hours to paint up, even more than the stonehorn. There are so many details and a lot of different elements. You can't paint it assembled. well, I'm happy it's finished now...

I'll have to do some work on the flames, Ill probably paint some tattoos on him, but apart form that I'm quite happy with how he turned out.
The flames are sculpted very weirdly, and it's quite difficult to paint the flames in a natural way. I painted the flames inside out now, not unhappy with the work so far.





This will be the end of this gnoblog, for now. I'll probaly won't be painting as many ogres as I did the last 4 months.
I will paint up some leadbelchers, maneaters, and a thundertusk, all in time, but won't make any pledges, because I have a well rounded army now ;-)

At first I thought the Ironblaster crewman was wearing a sculpted 'Field Cap' from the profile pic and though 'Wow'!
Then I realised it was a skull mask and thought 'Wow' again lol!

nope. I got bored of painting the same kind of banner again and again, this being my second Ogre army and there's not much variety in the banners you can choose.

how did you paint the black metallics?

- first rough highlight with boltgun metal, with some random lines here and there
- wash badab black
- fine highlight with chainmail
- super fine highlight mithhril silver on weapon tips etc.

how did you paint the stonehorn fur?

- Basecoat scorched Brown
- Wetbrush bestial Brown
- Wetbrush blazing orange
- Baal red wash 
- Layer blazing orange
- Layer 50/50 blazing orange/ bleached bone

So that was a time consuming affair with al the layering, yet I'm very happy with the result

Really like the flame effect. The army has come together so nicely and the yellow brings the army together to make a great army on the table.

Very nice metal on that cannon and luvely usage of that Defiler mask.
