Wilzif's Bloodglut Tribe blog

original thread ↗

Hi folks,

This is a little blog to chart the construction of my Bloodglut Tribe.

I've been playing ogres since 6th edition, although a little less frequently these days, and had around 4,000pts or so before the new book came out.

Now the vast majority of the tribe was assembled, based and sprayed, but not painted. With the arrival of the new book, it whet my appetite to finally get the paint brush out before I start battles again.

I have played just one game of 8th edition, in a multiplayer game, which was great fun so I'm hoping to give these boys an outing or two in the not-to-distant future. I'd like to have a few more painted before I do though!

Anyway - here's my first unit of 'ogres' (bulls is better). I'm painting another unit at the moment, also six-strong. I know there's plenty of info on bigger units etc, but I'm working to a 2,000pt list of the models I own (no thundertusks/mournfangs etc yet!!) with a view to just getting on to the table top again before I worry about lists!

Here they are - comments very welcome. I'm not much of a painter, and it took me three attempts to get a skin tone I was happy with, but I'm fairly pleased with this lot. Apologies for the photo quality though...

The tentative 2,000pt list I'm working to is (and dependant on models I have):

Slaughtermaster

General, Level 4, Extra Hand Weapon, Talisman of Preservation, Crown of Command, Lore of the Great Maw

Bruiser

BSB, Heavy Armour, Sword of Strife

Butcher

Level 2, Extra Hand Weapon, Dispel Scroll, Lore of Heavens

5 Ogres

Crusher, Bellower, Ironfists

5 Ogres

Crusher, Bellower, Ironfists

7 Ironguts

Gutlord, Bellower, Standard, Standard of Discipline

6 Leadbelchers

Giant

Scraplauncher

As mentioned, I'm not particularly worried about the strength of the list, I'm happy to learn the hard way, but it does mean I'll paint a nice chunk of what I have ready for when I'm producing more competitive armies.

Let me know what you think - all comments are welcome - and the list isn't set in stone, it's just something to work towards!

Standards are better than crushers in your bulls units, and I'd think about combining your 2 small units of Bulls into one big one.

Giants and scraplaunchers are considered "sub-optimal" at the moment, but it's nice to see a list with them in for a change, and as long as you're aware, you should still get plenty of mileage out of both. Giants are certainly better for us than they used to be, and scrappies can be good against certain enemies.
Bulls have grey skin. 'Nuff said.
Ah ok, standards is something to consider for later on then. I've only got 1 assembled though I think, never really took them in 6th edition, so I'll probably need to invest in another box or two of ogres or convert one.

I just like the giant and scraplauncher, and never really used them in previous editions, so I'll see how they get on.

Main opponents initially are likely to be WOC, skaven, chaos dwarf, dark elf, dwarf.

Picked up two boxes of Mournfangs and a Firebelly today, couldn't resist the shiny things in the end!  :)

I will resist changing the list until I have at least played one game with it - I owe it to the older models!!

Made a start on the second bull unit, but I'm a slow painter and am in awe of the speed some posters seem to be able to churn out excellent models!

The way it's going, it could well be 2012 before I get a game, largely due to other commitments. I'm not too disheartened by that (I've not played much in the last 2 years anyway), as it gives me an incentive to try and get the first 2,000pt list completely painted before I do play. I can't guarantee that will happen, but it's certainly something to aim for - after all, it's only 28 models!!

Secured some vouchers for my birthday, so promptly splashed out on a thundertusk and another box of bulls.

I prefer the thundertusk purely for the ASL capabilities, but will eventually add a stonehorn to the army too. Not sure how I'll paint him, but I also have a lot of yhetees unpainted - 12 - so hopefully I can tie them together in some way.

The box of bulls was largely for the standard(s). Back in 6th edition, I took lots of 3 or 4 man bull units with bellowers and the odd crusher. I only ended up assembling one standard bearer, so need one or two more so I have the option of fielding them.

Should hopefully have some pics of my second bull unit shortly - they are likely to be completed tonight. Then I have the difficult decision of whether I should carry on painting bulls (with 12 to go), or tackle my giant for a change. I'm very much a momentum painter - as I mentioned I'm not that great, but when I'm happy with some models I like to keep at it to take advantage of my enthusiasm! For that reason, I'm tempted to carry on with the bulls, even though they're not in the tentative 2,000pt list...

So I've written up a little bit of background for my fledgling tribe, hope it's enjoyable!

The Bloodglut tribe hail from the northern reaches of the Mountains of Mourn, within site of the vast Northern Wastes and the chaos taint that fills them.

Ogres from this tribe are a particularly hardy bunch, with constant exposure to the mutating winds of magic and chaos-infused environment. But it is by surviving one particular ritual at birth that they derive their name.

Youngling ogres are taken from their mother's shortly after birth by tribe butchers or the slaughtermaster after being daubed with Great Maw sigils.

They are carried miles from the tribe's settlement, well out into the chaos wastes to undergo their first, and for many, last trial.

There the butcher will dig a deep pit which is filled with the blood of a particular species of chaos wyrm native to the area.

The young ogre is then hurled into the viscous liquid at the bottom of the pit, and left overnight.

If they youngling survives the predations of chaos-tainted beasts, the threat of drowning in several pints of toxic blood and a lack of available food, they are welcomed back into the tribe.

Most are eaten by spawn or other mindless, slavering beasts, but those who do are expected to consume all the blood in the pit before they are pulled out.

This means the tribe has an unusally high prevalence of butchers among its members, due to their ability to consume noxious substances and durability in harsh extremes.

It's not an uncommon site to see several pits dug within close proximity of each other after several new births in the tribe - with those who survive going on to become great rivals...

So I have now managed to complete my second 6-man unit of bulls, bringing my painting total so far to 12 of the hulking creatures!

Still happy with the flesh tone, and am really enjoying painting the ogres as for a clumsy painter like me they are a bit more forgiving. I have had one problem - the eyes on one of the bellowers. I've tried doing them 6 or 7 times, but I just can't get it right without him looking cross-eyed. Any tips gratefully received - I'm sure you can tell which one he is! During the varnishing process, I also got a little bit close to two of the bulls, so they've got more of a glossy look due to excess varnish - you live and learn!

I have decided, after much deliberation, to tackle the giant next to give me a break from the bulls. Then I'll go back to them, finish off another two 6-men units, both with standards, and probably do the scraplauncher after that.

I now have 4 mournfangs, a firebelly, thundertusk and an ironblaster sat all waiting to be assembled, but they'll get done after I've painted my 2,000pt force.

I've also got myself some movement trays to put them, although inexplicably I did get 2 of the wrong size?!

Here's a few pics of them as a horde

Today saw me finish painting my giant and complete just over a quarter of my original 2,000pt list! Took me a whole week, I am very slow  :D, but I'm happy with him and look forward to using him on the battlefield.

Next I'll be painting up another 6 ogre bulls, with a standard bearer this time to give me some options on the table.

Any tips always greatfully received.

It's been a while since the last post - the Blood Bowl World Cup in Amsterdam got in the way, and I've not been well for a couple of weeks (also, partly due to the World Cup  :)).

But finally I got some more of my ogres done, another 6 bulls painted with a standard and bellower this time for more options on the battlefield. Again, same skin tone and painting method - I'm happy with it. This time, I decided to try and paint a tattoo on the skull of the standard, and I really wish I hadn't. I had to cover over it in skull white and retry, the area just wasn't big enough for what I wanted. Still, you live and learn!

So now I have 18 bulls painted - 2 crushers, 3 bellowers and a standard - and a giant. Not much, but not too shabby in terms of core models.

Next up I will tackle one of the army's butchers. Looking forward to doing a character, so might invest in a hero basing kit too.

Have sorted out a mini-doubles tournament at my occasional gaming club for next year. I ran one at the beginning of 2010 - using my skaven - as a lot of us were going to the Doubles GT at Warhammer World. There were a couple of trophies for the winning pair, and myself and my skaven partner in crime managed to come runner up in the mini-event. Was very enjoyable, and all players used it as an incentive to paint up 750pts. I also converted a hell pit abomination, which went really well and earned me a few appreciative comments at the tournament itself.

Anyway, this time round it will be two armies of 1,500pts per side, so a bit more to play with, and we'll be playing 5 games (as there are 6 pairs). Really looking forward to it, and I've made it painted armies only so everyone is busy with a brush!

Thanks for reading!

Looking good mate. I think you're about at the same point with your ogres as me. Good to see you're taking care of those bulls first, fully painted armies are so worth the time.

I'm not very experienced when it comes to gaming but I would say you're 2000 point list could do with 8 leadbelchers in 2 units of four. I think it gives you a bit more flexibility when choosing targets.

Would be great to hear what you think of my tribe, if you get a minute.

Thanks for the comments Mr_Griz - and I like your pirates too!

I have one more box of bulls, unassembled as yet, which I will get to after a few other units (leadbelchers and ironguts). Interestingly, my only other painted Warhammer army - Empire - which I played for many years until I grew tired of them, has just been sold for a fair whack. I know what you mean with painted armies!

I have 4 leadbelchers assembled, and another box to make up, so eventually I will have 8. The idea of the 2,000pt list was to take what I already had assembled, based and undercoated and get as much of it painted in as short a time. Then I'll worry about tweaking lists/adding some of the big gribblies. I have no idea how I'm going to paint those after all, so I'm happy to wait a bit until I can do a better job on them.

Look forward to more of your updates!

Thanks for the feedback man. I just read your army fluff, I think it gives you a great chance to convert a few bits, I think a couple of chaos bitz here and there are a cool idea. Not to make it a chaos ogre army, just a bit of stuff to set it apart from the crowd where the winds of chaos have taken it's toll on your ogres.

Of course you could always go down the Maw enlightened route, theme your army around holy hunters of foul things for the great Maw, I'm thinking holy butchers, van helsing style maneaters/ bruisers, you could change that thundertusk to have a small alter on it's back, or at least a huge holy symbol. Plus bitz for these will be incredibly easy to find/GS.

Anyway, keep us updated and check in on my Progress too!
Well, just in time for Christmas I have painted up my first butcher for the Bloodgut Tribe.

I'm reasonably happy with him, barring a couple of minor issues as I always seem to have. Firstly, I just can't get my camera to take decent pictures with the lighting I have available. Definitely something I need to work on! It makes him look worse than he is, but never mind.

This time, I forgot a layer of bestial brown before starting the skin, and only remembered after a couple of layers. It means the tone is a little lighter when you stand him next to one of the bulls, not drastically, but it is noticeable. Hey ho.

I had another issue with doing his eyes. I've lost my toothpick I'd saved too, but could probably go back again and do them if necessary.

Enjoyed doing a character, and makes a change to paint a metal model!

Next up I have to assemble another 4 leadbelchers and paint them up, hopefully will finish not too far into the New Year as I'm hoping to play my 1st game of 8th in mid January!!

Righto, next update has a fair bit of news!

I recently finished off painting the 8 leadbelchers I own. These have come out really nicely for me I think, as I was particularly concerned with trying to paint flame from their firelighters, but I don't think I've done a bad job. Must say the unit looks good lined up together!

I've also started my scraplauncher, the old metal model in my case. Only finished the rhinox at the moment, along with his base, but quite pleased with the result. Used a similar technique to someone who posted on the Stronghold - whose name I will link tomorrow when I'm not so tired. But thanks for the tips!

Will get on to the main frame of the scraplauncher on Friday, then once that's complete and glued, I'll start adding gnoblars and extras!

Finally, the last stage of the update is that I will have my first game of 8th this Sunday, at 2,000pts, using the list I devised in my first post. Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it! Will be against one of Empire, Skaven, High Elves, Chaos Dwarfs or Warriors of Chaos - and I don't mind which!

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!

Still very much enjoying painting up my tribe, slowly but surely. I'll be pleased to finish off the 2,000pt list, as I'm itching to tackle some of the new toys - especially the thundertusk.

I am toying with the idea of trying a blue wash when I get around to painting my ironguts. I wanted their armour to look more 'expensive' in a way, or of better quality, so wondered if a thin blue wash might work. Any tips - or is this a bad idea?

One more thing

I've always been a sucker for battle reports, so I'll be writing one for Sunday's first game with the Bloodglut tribe.

I'll also attempt them for the mini-doubles tournament later this year, but that's not til May.

Subscribed :)

And good job, cant wait for the updates!
ogres are the boulder rolling down at you.  you can side step it, run away from it or blow it up before it gets to you... but you can never ignore it.
Cheers spartacus, thanks for the kind words.

I've now painted up the main frame of the scraplauncher, and attached it to the beastie. It's not quite finished, there's loads of little extra bits I keep spotting like rope/nails etc. - but nearly done!

Undercoated the launcher part, extra platform, chains and shield/spear walls so they will be painted and added tomorrow. For those who don't know the chains run along the underside of the 'arms' of the chariot part and the shield/spear walls go on top of the higher platforms. The extra platform goes at the back.

Ugh, that probably doesn't help - easier if you google the old model to see it completed!

Anyway, after that there are 9 gnoblars to fit on there. To be honest, I think I'll only put 6 on - partly because I don't want it too cluttered and partly because I've done the base, and don't want to add gnoblars to it.

It will be seeing its first action on Sunday too, so fingers crossed it does well.

Hello again folks!

Well, the dust has settled on my first outing in 8th and the first for my (mostly) painted Bloodglut Tribe.

As I said, it was a 2,000pt affair largely sticking to my list above, barring the addition of a gorger, magic items swaps and me lumping the ogres into one unit.

I'll not spoil the surprise, as I've done a battle report and all, but it was against warriors of chaos and it was great fun.

Right, small update this time around.

Cold weather has dampened by enthusiasm for painting in the garage, but I have now made some progress on the scraplauncher. Phase 2 is complete - so have added painted extra platform, chains, launcher, shield wall and spear wall.

Only have the gnoblars to add now, which hopefully should be relatively straightforward. Happy with how the scrappie looks - very ramshackle appearance and I'm pleased with the wood effect I've done. Will be good to see the complete model done, I know it's not everyone's favourite but I quite like it!

It'll be on to the ironguts next, but that will be a while away as I have a dark elf Blood Bowl team to paint up first for a tournament in March...

Finally completed my scraplauncher, which as we speak is slowly drying its varnish coat in the freezing cold garage!

Tricky to put together the old metal version, but I quite like the model despite its flaws! Went with 7 gnoblars, as there are meant to be 7 crew on board, and looking forward to fielding it fully painted in battles from now on!

Next unit will be my ironguts - and when they're done I'll just have 2 models left of my original 2,000pt list to paint! Looking like 6 months to have painted the whole lot, not speedy by any means, but not bad for me!

The doubles tournament at my club is taking shape. I've got the 5 missions we'll be playing, with mini-objectives in each game. We will have a lot of different armies taking part - Bretonnians, Chaos Dwarfs, Dark Elves, Beastmen, Vampire Counts, Daemons, Ogres, Wood Elves, Warriors of Chaos - so I'm really looking forward to it. That takes place in May, and I'll have a few more of models to paint by then, notably an Ironblaster and my maneaters.

I'm also considering venturing to a tournament, possibly a Throne of Skulls in June. Again, got a bit of painting to do before then, but it's a goal to aim at!

And finally, next weekend will see the Bloodglut's second out on the table, this time against the new vampire counts... Might even be 3,000pts, we shall see.

Thanks for reading.

The tribe has had its second outing on the battlefield, a 2,500pt game against the new vampire counts no less. No spoilers here, but it was great fun.

Now, need to chalk up some ogre achievements!

Some updates for the tribe to report!

I've now assembled my bruiser BSB. I'm not much of a modeller, so I've used a metal tyrant/bruiser model as the base and simply replaced his left arm with a minotaur standard bearer arm. I filed off the fur parts, and will be using small chain link to cover those areas. The banner itself is from the mournfang sprue, but without the skull on it. I've glued the 'pole' alongside that of the minotaur arm to make it look a little ramshackle, so need to add greenstuff 'ties' to link them together. Finally, I'm adding a mini cage with skeleton in it from one of the GW wood sprues.

No pic yet, I based and sprayed him last night so I'll take one when he's dry. Haven't added cage yet either, thought I'd wait to paint him.

Also assembled firebelly as I've got a 3k game tomorrow and he makes up some points!

There will be a slight change to the painting schedule, as I've only got 2 months left before the doubles competition I'm running at my club. I have a tall order to get through what I want to, but fingers crossed I can get it done.

The doubles sees me pairing up with a wood elf general. It's two forces of 1,500pts for each 'team' and we will be playing five games, with various extra scenarios in each. We're going with the following (subject to change, of course):

Spellweaver: Lvl 4, Rhymer's Harp
Noble: Hail of Doom Arrow, Rageth's Wildfire Blades
Slaughtermaster: Lvl 3, Biting Blade, Dispel Scroll, Talisman of Endurance, Crown of Command
Bruiser: BSB, Hvy Armour, Banner of Eternal Flame

15 Archers: FC
16 Archers: Standard & Musician
10 Ironguts: FC, Standard of Discipline
6 Treekin
3 Mournfang: FC, Dragonhide Banner, Hvy Armour, Ironfists
Great Eagle
2 Sabretusks
Ironblaster
7 Waywatchers

Any thoughts on the lists? I've no experience of wood elves, and my sidekick doesn't play much either. As the organiser, I'm not expecting to win, but I hope to make a go of it!

As you might realise, that leaves me with a hefty painting job to do in the next 2 months (1st day of competition is May 27). I have to paint: the BSB, 2 sabretusks, 7 more ironguts (3 done this week!), 3 mournfang, ironblaster. Fingers crossed I make it...

I look forward to seeing the progress as it goes.

Righto, I finally finished my 10-strong irongut unit tonight. Been nearly two months since I completed a model, so need to speed up a little bit if I'm to make my May 27 deadline.

Anyway, was a pleasure to paint these guys. I wanted to make them stand out a little bit, so went with a blue/black wash mix on their armour plating and a light mithril silver highlight. Quite happy with how it looks in the end, not going to win a Golden Demon or anything, but good for me!!

I have also now bought as much as I want to get for the ogres, apart from perhaps one more ironblaster. I bought another box of mournfang and another irongut box the other day and I think that's probably me. As it is I would be able to field the following (not all painted or assembled yet of course!):

3 Butchers/Slaughtermasters
Tyrant/Bruiser
Bruiser BSB
Hunter (on foot)
Firebelly
Hunter (on Stonehorn)

28 Ogres (2 standards, 3 crushers, 4 bellowers)
14 Ironguts (2 standards, 2 gutlords, 2 bellowers)
8 Leadbelchers (bellower)
50 Gnoblars (8 trappers)
6 Mournfang (2 standards, 2 champions, 2 bellowers)
Scraplauncher
Ironblaster
4 Sabretusks
6 Maneaters (standard, champion)
2 Gorgers
10 Yhetees
Giant
Stonehorn
Thundertusk

As you can see, a fair old collection, but that's as big as I want to go barring adding another ironblaster for tournament purposes. Still enjoying painting them, and good to have a set goal to work to (see earlier gnoblog posts). Next model to go under the paint brush will be my Bruiser BSB.

Cheers

The wood elf general and me have been busy tinkering with our list for the upcoming doubles tournament at our club. Plenty of discussion and changes of mind, but here's what we're thinking at the moment:

Spellweaver: Lvl 4, Rhymer's Harp, Scroll of Shielding, Lore of Life
Noble: Hail of Doom Arrow, Obsidian Trinket
Butcher: Lvl 2, Dispel Scroll, EHW, Lore of the Great Maw
Bruiser: BSB, Hvy Armour, Grt Wpn, Look-out Gnoblar, Rune Maw

18 Glade Guard: Musician, Standard, Banner of Eternal Flame
12 Glade Guard: Musician, Standard
8 Ironguts: Bellower, Standard, Gutlord, Banner of Discipline
4 Ogres: Bellower, Standard, Crusher, Ironfists

6 Treekin
3 Mournfang: Standard, Musician, Hvy Armour, Ironfists, Dragonhide Banner
Sabretusk
Sabretusk
Gorger

8 Waywatchers
Great Eagle
Ironblaster

We've deliberated long and hard over the slaughtermaster and decided we don't think he will work with a lvl 4 spellweaver. It's a 3,000pt game in the end, and magic always seems to be at a premium in larger games for me. The spellweaver needs the dice to cast, so I've taken the risky option of going for a butcher. There's a 50/50 chance he could be the general, which is a worry, although the irongut unit is LD9 anyway and doesn't use his 'inspiring presence'. Got to hope we're in combat early doors.

Two hammer units will be ironguts and mournfang, and the anvil will hopefully be the treekin with lore of life backup. We've got plenty of speed too, so hopefully we'll give all 5 of our opponents something to think about!

Have now churned out the Bloodglut Tribe's BSB in only a few days, which was nice.

I'm not a great modeller, as well as an average at best painter, so I kept my conversion simple. I already had a second metal tyrant model, so used the non-great weapon pose.

Then it was a case of acquiring a plastic minotaur standard arm, filing off the fur, and also grabbing a spare mournfang banner top to attach to it. I kept it a loose attachment, I wanted it to look like and ogre (or at least his gnoblar) had stuck the two poles together or lashed them at least.

He's painted much the same as my regular ogres, but with a gold breastplate and a blue highlighted weapon in case he takes a magic hammer or such. Finally, I added a skull and frame add on to the standard (where the dragon skull would go on mournfang banner) from one of the Warhammer tree kits.

Have been in two minds whether to add a gnoblar somewhere to represent look-out gnoblar, but I've not found one I like other than the metal scraplauncher one I already have on my finished piece. If I see one I do like I might add it, but I'm not that fussed to be honest.

Finished building another 2 sabretusks, bringing my quota up to 4, and they're now based and undercoated too. I should hopefully start work on them Friday night. Still on target for that May 27th deadline at the moment!!

Cheers

Lookin good! A firebelly might be a better choice as an only spellcaster vs a butcher as his breath weapon adds a lot of combat punch, and maybe drop the gorger for some more bulls as 4 will get killed pretty quick. Hope it goes (or went) well.
ogres are the boulder rolling down at you.  you can side step it, run away from it or blow it up before it gets to you... but you can never ignore it.
I did want to use a firebelly, but the model I got had the usual finecast mould problems so I need to get another one before I paint him. I have a tight schedule to get the army done as it is, so stuck with butcher as he is already completed.

A couple of the scenarios I have dreamt up need units to hold objectives, and they need standards in some cases. The gorger is there for dwarf/chaos dwarf artillery and trebuchets. With iron guts/mournfang and tree kin, I will be happy if they are going for the ogres! And if they leave them, I'll have a nice flanking force.

Thanks for the tips though! Sabretusks will be painted next.

Painted up my four sabretusks this week - 2 old metal ones and 2 finecast.

Now, I'm in two minds about them to be honest. I like the desert yellow tone of the fur - I feel they're hunting up in the Mountains of Mourn and don't want to draw undue attention to themselves with Stonehorn etc lurking about. But I found it so difficult to highlight or shade the colour.

I must have done 3 or 4 attempts on the coat, adding devlan mud wash and then painting over it again because I felt it was too dark or grubby. Then I tried lighter wash, but still didn't like it. Eventually I settled on just a couple of thin coats of desert yellow, then a desert yellow/kommando khaki edge highlight and pure kommando khaki drybush on top - but you can barely even pick out a difference in the model.

Then I tried to paint on some tiger stripes, but I don't think I'm a good enough painter to pull that off without it looking like lines slapped on to the model. Perhaps I'll go back to them further down the line, but for the moment here they are. Be gentle

I think they look fine...though the deeper parts of the body could do with a darker shade. Rather than using a wash maybe try some desert yellow with a small amount of scorched brown (aiming for almost desert yellow but a hint darker) and paint it on. I would use it to lowlight the areas between the muscles.

Empire
Ogres
Hmm, thanks for the tip warlordsteve. Don't think I've ever tried lowlighting - so I'll have to give that a go. Cheers!

A significant update!

I have, perhaps foolishly, signed up for my first 8th edition tournament later this year. I'll be attending the 5-game Midlands Open in the UK at the end of July.

So I'll be bringing along my ogres - gives me another incentive to get more painted. I've already got my goal for the end of next month for the doubles competition I'm running. Fortunately, I'm on schedule for that at the moment - currently painting up an ironblaster piece by piece.

I've started thinking about potential lists for the tournament. It's a 2.4k affair, so a different points level than that I've played at at the moment. I've only ever been to one other tournament - back in 6th (well it was Warhammer World GT heat and final, so technically two I suppose), so it could be a rude awakening. In fact, it probably will be, but I'm not bothered about that!

For that reason, I've been thinking up a 'tough' list - or what I think is one. I have a practice game in a week or so against the new Empire, so I might trial some elements of that list in that game. Not all of it, I prefer club games to be more friendly lists, although I don't mind facing tournament lists myself - it's all good practice!!

Initial thoughts are I might try out a lore of death slaughtermaster. I doubt I'll go for the greedy fist this time around, but I've used maw in all my 5 games (not all with slaughtermaster though) so keen to try something else.

I threw a vague list together last night. It was something like this:

Slaughtermaster: Lvl 4, EHW, Power Stone, 5+ ward, Ironcurse Icon, magic weapon?, Death
Bruiser: BSB, Hvy Armour, Banner of Eternal Flame, Grt Wpn, Look-out Gnoblar
Butcher: Lvl 2, EHW, Dispel Scroll, Maw
Firebelly: Lvl 1, EHW, Channelling Staff, Fire

8 Ironguts: FC, Standard of Discipline
9 Ogres: FC, Ironfists, Look-out Gnoblar
7 Leadbelchers: Bellower
Sabretusk
Sabretusk
3 Mournfang: Standard, Musician, Dragonhide Banner
3 Mournfang: Standard, Musician
Ironblaster
Ironblaster
Gorger

Not original, I know, and I'd quite like to have the scraplauncher in there - perhaps instead of an ironblaster. Would also like maneaters, but they are so expensive. Smallish gnoblar blocks might be useful too.

Any thoughts?

Finished off another of my ogre tribe's models tonight. I managed to get an ironblaster painted, and on the whole I'm pretty pleased with him.

I used the same blue/red trousers on the leadbelcher, and added some blue reins to tie him in with the army. Obviously I painted all the bits separately before assembling and I was pleasantly surprised with how well it went together for the most part.

The bone 'horns' I found really difficult. I'm not 100% with how they look now, but I tried three different attempts before I was remotely satisfied. I'm ok painting skulls, small bones etc, but I just do not know how to get the effect they have in the army book. Maybe I'll get myself to one of those eavy metal classes one day.

Anyway, that's a fairly major model done and I'm still on schedule for the doubles in just over a month's time. My next target is a big one - 4 mournfang. I'll try and post WIP pics of them, probably going to build the four beasties tomorrow and get the bases started. Fingers crossed, if I remain on schedule I'll have time to paint up a GW wood for my co-general (wood elf), a pile of skulls as an objective and possibly a firebelly as an alternative as my general.

Cheers!

Ok, little WIP update for my tribe this evening.

Finished off four mournfang tonight - but only the beasties themselves at the moment. Taken me a little while, and it's a different look to the normal mournfang I've seen on this site, but I quite like them. I've made a start on the saddles, they should be done tomorrow or Monday and glued on hopefully.

Then I've got to assemble, spray and paint the riders to finish off the 4. I have another 2 in a box, but I'm focussing on getting these four done ready for the doubles (and friendly games too!). Who knows, maybe I'll attempt a conversion on the last 2. I'd quite like the idea of one leaping off a rock...

Anyway, after I've done these four, I only have a gorger to paint to complete my tentative list. But I've been thinking of swapping the butcher for a firebelly, so might have more to paint...

Second WIP update for the mournfang.

Finished off the four saddles and glued them on today - they certainly are a hefty model even without the riders! Will get around to assembling and spraying the riders this evening so they should easily be done before the end of the week.

Also finished a pile of skulls objective for use in the doubles later this month. Getting close to finishing my list - will be good to see it all on the table top!

Right, finished off the four riders tonight and glued them to their mournfang mounts.

Had a couple of issues with the banner. I decided on a yellow banner this time around, and tried the new yellow glaze for the first time. Quite like the colour it's come out as, although I took these pics in my garage and the lighting is not so good.

I tried another freehand banner - based on the clenched fist in the ogre army book. It didn't work first time round, so I repainted it and kept it as four 'fingers' so it could be a mournfang paw.

Anyway, now I have just a gorger to paint for my 1,500pt list. I've repaired the bad moulding on my firebelly with liquid greenstuff, so I'll endeavour to get him painted too before the 27th.

Cheers!

Finished off my firebelly this afternoon, after deciding to swap him out in my 1,500pt doubles list.

I used the same skin tone as the rest of my army, and the same fire technique as that used on the leadbelchers for his breath weapon. Reasonably happy with how he turned out. Lovely model, wish I was an eavy metal painter to do it justice!

So, just a gorger to finish off. He's started, and has a couple of washes on him, but will probably be finished Tuesday or Wednesday. Then, I just have a GW wood to paint for my wood elf co-general and I'm done for the doubles a week today!!

Will be a good feeling to have painted up the army - some 51 models - and see it all on the table. Then I have to decide on a 2,400pt army for the singles tournament I'm going to in July and make sure all that is painted up!

BSB
4 Sabretusk
10 Ironguts
4 Mournfang
Ironblaster
Firebelly
Gorger

Thanks a lot!

Have to say, I’m not much of a painter and often struggle to summon the enthusiasm (other army is Clan Moulder skaven…) – but I’ve really enjoyed every minute of putting this lot together.

Hopefully that eagerness will continue with the rest of the army. Got another 94 to paint (including 60 gnoblars), so only a third done!

Uggh,

Not sure if due to the warm weather, or not shaking the can enough, but I had a bit of a disaster with my varnish on the gorger. The spray I have occasionally gets a bit gloopy, so I have to remove excess after spraying.

This time, it didn't look so bad so I didn't need to do too much, or so I thought. Returned to find it all 'shiny' almost like gloss varnish - not best pleased.

I've painted over the top of it to try and deaden the effect, but it still looks shiny. Anyone have tips on preventing/fixing this situation?

Also, I may have committed to painting 10 gnoblars for the weekend due to (yet) another list tweak!

Little update this time,

Finished off my slaughtermaster tonight, and I'm quite chuffed with him to be honest.

I chopped of one of his hands - which was hard as he's metal and has a chunky wrist! Then I stuck on an ogre club from the irongut sprue I think so he has 2 hand weapons and can take fencer's blades etc. Same painting style as before and I did the blue magic weapon effect on both, just in case!

I assembled another 8 ironguts during the week and they're now based and sprayed black. There the next project as I'm thinking I might field 2 ironguts units at the singles tournament I'm going to at the end of July.

Finally, have a 3k game on Monday in which the double irongut will get a try out. Should be an interesting game against savage orcs again.

Right,

Finished off my second irongut unit tonight. This time they're 8-strong, with a gutlord, bellower and standard so I've got options. I'm leaning more and more towards two units of guts for the singles tournament I'm signed up for (in 4 weeks). They've done well for me in the games I've taken them and I value their hit-ability to win me those close combats.

Next model will be my second ironblaster. I'm trialling the double ironblaster list for the first time on Monday against Tomb Kings at 2.4k. I have to submit my list by Friday, so it's the last chance for some tweaking. Hopefully it goes well and will help me make my mind up!

Then I'll probably take a little break from the ogres. Been 8 months of continuous work on them and although I've really enjoyed it, 2-4 weeks away might be just what I need to invigorate my enthusiasm. Then it'll be a case of deciding whether to paint up my maneaters, or perhaps tackle a stonehorn or thundertusk!

Cheers

So, I had to submit my list for the singles tournament I'm attending at the end of the month. Deadline was last night (Fri), but I got it in on Wednesday anyway after another couple of practice games on Monday.

It means I have one more model to paint up before the event starts - my second ironblaster - which is already well underway. I've finished the rhinox and the base, and just have to glue the wheels to the chassis for that to be complete. Then it's a case of all the add-on barrels, the leadbelcher and gnoblar etc.

Will be good to see the army completed, as I'm planning a little break from painting my ogres after the tournament.

Having sold my first Warhammer army - Empire - I've also picked up some daemons for my new force. That will mean I have ogres, skaven, daemons and eventually one other army as I think 4 is enough for me. Not sure about what the final army might be - leaning towards Tomb Kings - but that's way down the line!

My list for the tournament is not amazingly original. I considered a heavens slaughtermaster with a couple of units of leadbelchers and some maneaters for a different kind of list, but I didn't seem to perform so well and missed the Lore of the Great Maw (well at level 4 at least).

Here's the list:

Slaughtermaster: Level 4, Sword of Striking, Earthing Rod, Talisman of Endurance, Maw
Bruiser: BSB, Hvy Armour, Ironfist, Sword of Strife, Ironcurse Icon, Lookout Gnoblar
Firebelly: Level 1, XHW, Dispel Scroll, Rock Eye, Fire

8 Ironguts: FC, Dragonhide Banner
7 Ironguts: Standard, Bellower
Sabretusk
Sabretusk
4 Mournfang: Standard, Bellower, Hvy Armour, Ironfists, Banner of Eternal Flame
Ironblaster
Ironblaster

I'm hoping not to lose all my games! Have no real expectations of doing well - it's my 1st 8th edition tournament - so I'll be happy with a 2/1/2 record (it's 5 games). There will be 100 players there, so I'm sure there are plenty better players than me! If I finished in the top 75 I think I would be very pleased.

Looking forward to it! I'll attempt a summary of the games after the event in my battle rep thread.

Thanks for the kind words!

Having an all-painted army is great to see, no matter the ability of the painter I feel. I'm distinctly average, but I'm quite happy with my ogres! Not too many left to paint really, mostly gnoblar which bulks up the numbers but they don't take long to paint.

Well I don't really mind what happens at the tournament. I'd prefer not to lose all my games, but I'm pretty easy-going. I'm looking forward to playing armies I don't usually face and players with different styles. Should be interesting!

Finished off my second ironblaster tonight with a flurry of activity getting the job done a little earlier than I anticipated.

Found this one a little more tricky to put together. Not sure what I'd done differently but had to fiddle around to get the 'tusk' bits in the right place. Still, happy with the finished model and used the other options from the first one to make it stand out a little.

So, that now means my 2.4k force for the Midlands Open at the end of the month is now complete. All I need to do now is grab myself a tray from somewhere so I can ship the models around during the event.

Really looking forward to it to be honest, let's hope I do ok!

Been a long old while since my last post to the gnoblog. That's for two reasons really.

First I took a little break from painting my ogres. I was painting other things - including a blitz on my collection of Warhammer scenery and a dark elf Blood Bowl team for my league. As of last week, I've been painting my horde steadily for a year now, and got a fair chunk of it done, but I needed a bit of a break!

Second I have also started delving into daemons for Warhammer - after they brought out plastic plaguebearers. I haven't painted any of them yet - I'm still committed to finishing more of my ogres first - but I had good fun finding alternative models for the heralds, picking up lava resin bases for them and thinking up paint schemes.

Anyway, that's a little off-topic.

Next month, I'm off to my second 8th edition tournament. It's at 2,400pts again, but there is no comp in this one which should be interesting.

I'm busy painting up two units of maneaters for this one. I've decided to run with no mournfang. I love them, I think they're great, but I'm not sure I always get the best out of them - certainly in a tournament game.

My only tournament so far I think I lost them in 3 of 5 games and I didn't get their points back that often either. I like the flexibility the maneaters will give me, but we shall see!

Here's three of the maneaters from the first unit. Hope you like them!

Couple of updates for this post. I finished off my 12 maneaters a few weeks ago, and they saw action as a unit of 10 in a tournament - see may battle report thread for that!

I've also finished off my tyrant this evening, and he may well get a run out for a while as I'm planning a different list for a 1-day event in January.

Have now painted a sizeable chunk of my ogres, although a unit of gnoblars pushes up the numbers remaining a lot. I will be working on a new project (Warhammer Daemons) so the ogres will slow down a little, but I'm going to use units/models from my tribe to break up the Daemons so I remain enthusiastic about painting lots of troops!

Cheers

So I have another tournament coming up in a few weeks, this one is a 1-day affair at 2.4k, three games.

Decided to try out a different list, dropping the slaughtermaster for the first time in a while. Not sure that's the best solution for a one-day event, but I fancy a change so my tyrant will get a run-out.

Does mean I'll have 4 characters - first time in tournament play and I think I've only fielded 4 twice before (in larger games). Few things to decide on, I'm undecided between taking heavens/beasts/death on my second butcher. Leaning towards beasts at the moment, I have a few days left before the list has to be in!

Here's what I'm thinking of taking:

Tyrant: Armour of Fortune, Sword of Bloodshed
Bruiser: BSB, Hvy Armour, EHW, Crown of Command
Butcher: Lvl 2, EHW, Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring, BEASTS
Butcher: Lvl 2, EHW, Feedback Scroll, MAW

8 Ironguts: Standard, Bellower, Banner of Swiftness
7 Ironguts: Standard, Bellower

Sabretusk
Sabretusk
7 Leadbelchers: Bellower
4 Mournfang: Hvy Armour, Ironfists, Dragonhide Banner

Ironblaster

There's a bit of comp for the event. Specifically for ogres the hellheart and dispel scroll are mutually exclusive, as are greedy fist and lore of death. There is a 0-2 limit on ironblasters and mournfang total (ie 1 of each, or 2 of one), which is fine. Final limit is maximum 400pts for a non-character unit.

Should be good fun, few of us from my gaming club going so bragging rights to be won and lost!!
