A Fresh Start! Ogre Painting Log!

Hey guys!
Having collected Ogres back when they came out, I decided to start up a new tribe as my painting has come on a hell of alot since then and I am really feeling the quality of the new sculpts!!

Right...I have spent all of tonight working on this little beaut!



The base isn't completed yet but he is about 90% complete!

Don't forget he is only a basic Bull!

Nice skintone and gutplate, dreadboi! Are you going for natural colors (browns/greens and skin) or are you going to use brighter colors as well? Don't really have any other comments, the models looks good, especially considering it's a basic bull.

That is a very nice bull. The skin in particular; it almost has the depth of real skin.

Nice looking mini. Keep up the good job. How did u paint the gut plate and boots?

Sat down over the weekend and bashed out this little beaut!   



He is still WIP but again you get the idea! More of the same really...just waiting for my preorders to arrive 

Colourwise, I am trying to go for nice natural feel to them...as if they have spent too much time in the rain!

Kind of Albionesque without going over board....at some point I will attempt tattoos etc but for now I just want to get used to painting these lardy lads!

Painting wise, the silver was done with Vallejo Model Air Aluminium, devlan mud wash, black wash, then mixed up some jade green colour with some Iso alcohol to make a wash...used that...a few more washes of brown + black to dull it down again....then a quick drybrush of silver to make it pop back again!

Boots were done with Calthan brown washed with Devlan mud...then highlighted back up to calthan brown! It's amazing the nuances you can gain with a limited pallette!

What i'm trying to achieve are realistic faces/skin tones...going for grey/green washes around the eyes....stubble on the chins....red glazes for mouth/blushed noses etc...

Absolutely. This skin has a real texture and depth to it that very few painted minis can achieve, which is unfortunate because that texture and depth is a big part of what makes skin look realistic.
Though the nipples seem oddly unfinished.

Love the skin tones. They look great!

What i'll do, next time I'm painting an ogre up i shall do my best to go step by step and do a mini tutorial!

The skin is deceptively simple...just i'm trying to be extra neat and use glazes/washes to make it come alive!

I think the paintjob on these ogres is of a very high standard, hope mine will turn out as good when I get to them. If you play in tournaments you should be winning some trophys for best painted army!

I like the skins. You've obtained the effect you wanted. The metal looks too green. That could work if it was brass. But it doesn't look like brass.

Could you detail your recepie for the skin?

i have decided to change the metals back to their original colour...i'm not too happy about the green shoes! i will repaint and get back to you!

The second bull looks as great as the first, dreadboi.

I'm thinking that by keeping all of the metal pretty spot on that will add coherency! Possibly thinking of adding tattoos also...again by keeping them the same kind of colours that should tie them up nicely!

I'm open to ideas though!

As with all my projects...they will no doubt change and adapt as i sit down to paint! I kind of let the brush and paint do the talking...often against my brains will! 

I hope to get some more painting done towards the weekend and will start writing up a tutorial on my ogre skin recipe!

I changed the metal to more normal colours...i much prefer it so props to Grumph for making me rethink said work!

Not ogres...but beautiful models!

Now I am jealous. Those models are awesome and you are doing them great justice already. I had never noticed the nurglings are pulling on the entrails of the plaugebearers, is that how they are modeled or did you do that?

They are awesome and I can understand the lure.

Thinking about getting my own on round bases myself...

@Redletters : Thanks man! The nurglings are part of the kit...kinda extra you can put anywhere...i thought they looked rather awesome pulling along their older brothers

@Shadowlord: Hell yes! they are probably some of the most awesome plastics i have ever worked with...would look good in say, your inevitable 40k chaos army!!!

Simply put, some of the nicest and easiest models I have ever painted!
Messed around with UhU glue and Tamiya clear paints!

Looking good! How did you find the Tamiya clears for achieving the blood effects?

The Tamiya stuff is a god send...I used the yellow, red and smoke colours to make up a bloody colour - if you let it congeal a bit, it looks way more real!

Also added a touch of UHU glue to it and stretched it about the model in choice places...less really is more!

They look absolutely fantastic Tom! You used vallejo colours for the flesh IIRC? Sorely tempted to try some out, no room on my desk, or spare hobby funds though!

I think maybe black base edges would look better though? Could be telling porkies however

hey guys! I haven't posted for aaaages...life had simply got in the way! I lost a job, and then worked bloody hard to start up something i've wanted to do for ages...and that is SFX makeup/prop making!

My first massive project was this skyrim dragon priest mask done using the pepakura method...i'm rather happy with it





I haven't slacked on the painting front either! I'm finishing up a comission of Dragon Ogres for a good friend of mine....such bloody lovely miniatures!

Those DrOgres are simply amazing! The skin feels a little too light, but that is a personal preference thing

I know nothing about Skyrim, but the mask is freakin' awesome too!

@just-josh: Thanks dude! i'll take some proper photos when they're done...it's probably (hopefully ) my daylight lamp washing it all out

The back of them is green and scaley going into the fleshy colours...i kinda wanted the dragon and the ogre parts to be quite distinct!

You're very welcome Don't get me wrong, they are superb! But, just a little lighter than I imagine them to be. But, that's as much about my personal preference, as it is anything else

In particular, I think you've done a stunning job on the metals, leather and claws
