How to paint Ogres Dreadboi style!

Hey chaps!

Just thought i'd offer my 2 pence into the coffers!

I present to the forum a painting tutorial to maybe help out the newer people to the hobby and to gain insight from the older ogres in the forum!

So here it is!

SKIN

First off, I prime my miniatures black and then dust them with white spray paint...should come out looking something like this!


(please note I cut out the flash on the ogres teeth...somehow it escaped me when preparing the mini!)

Then i base coat the skin in Tallarn Flesh...keep this coat thin and do a couple of coats...don't worry about being messy as this is just the base colour!! I painted boots and belt in calthan brown, the trousers in whatever colour suited (was a vallejo browny green!) and the metal in Vallejo model air Aluminium!




Then the first step on the skin is to shade with Ogryn Flesh...i put the wash in any crease...i did not want to wash all of the flesh as i wanted to keep the original colour peaking through...i applied it heavily on the face and in the deep crevices...




I also washed everything else with devlan mud!

After this step i feathered Tallarn flesh back onto the flesh...generally, I kept the paint thin and built up the layers slowly...




Then i mixed up tallarn flesh with Vallejo Model Air Sand about 70/30...again keep the paint thin and keep thinking where the light hits the flesh - i.e. eyebrows, top lip, top of muscles etc!




Finally, on the very highest edges, I used a 50/50 mix of the skin highlight to make the muscles and face really pop! I believe that having kept the paint thin and letting the basecoat shine through a little, by using a couple of colours, you can achieve very interesting skin colours!

In this step I washed the top lip and the nipples with baal red wash...this is to suggest blood flow to those areas!



I washed under the eyes with a mix of badab black and purple to suggest tiredness and pigmentation!
This also brings out the definition of the eyes alot more!



STONE

Stone was painted codex grey, washed with badab black/devlan mud and then lines were painted again with codex grey...not too fancy but hey! I think it looks good

METAL

I painted the gut plate brazen brass and washed it with Devlan Mud and Badab black...
once dry I drybrushed it with silver and then gave it a final watered coat of devlan mud to make gold brassy coloured again!

Then to achieve the verdigris effect, I diluted some hawk turquoise in some iso alcohol...this really brakes down the paint making it flow well and is totally colourless! DO NOT GET ANY ON YOU/IN YOUR MOUTH/EYES! IT IS FOUL STUFF!
Water works just fine for this step but make sure it is totally clear

The silver details were painted with Model Air Aluminium....washed with badab black/devlan mud...

Then I stippled on an orangey brown colour (i used Vallejo but vermin brown/solar macharius orange would work!).

Concentrate this on the middle of the weapon/shield as this is where the rust wouldn't be rubbed off by use!



Streak in silver on the pointy bits and towards the edges to suggest the wear and tear that will no doubt ensure on an ogre campaign! I'd imagine regular swords used as toothpicks!



Again wash with a little Devlan mud if it is too bright!

Should turn out like this!




BASE

Paint the base Calthan Brown and then use PVA to stick down sand

Wash with Devlan Mud!



Drybrush with Calthan Brown, then Iyanden Darksun and then Deneb Stone!

Repaint the sides Calthan Brown and then stick on any static grass that you want to!

Follow all of this and you will hopefully get something that looks like this when you finish!

This is an amazing tutorial. With all of the large, good quality pictures it really is good at showing the differences between the steps. I know that as soon as I get some cash to get some ogres with, ill be using this tutorial for my ogres skin.  Thanks alot for posting this

Excellent tutorial and very well painted ogres. Do you highlight the trousers at all? Not sure it needs it, as eyes are going to be drawn to the fantastic skin and metal. Thanks for the tutorial.

@Cybin : Hey dude cheers! As far as i can tell, colour wise the closest would be bleached bone...the good thing with model air is that they are thinned for airbrush use...the consistency is pre thinned effectively so it helps me get very smooth transitions between layers!

@Vlagg the Dragoneater: The trousers are painted in the base coat and shaded with devlan mud...then highlights are done simply with the base colours...I really wanted the skin and the metal to pop and be the focus! Nothing worse than having your ogre faces being outshined by his trousers!!!

@Herbert: Wow! what a compliment! I think GW overshades their models to make them rather cartoony...i am trying to go for a little more realism? I think the subtle shading/highlighting really adds alot to these wonderful miniatures

Right i'm off to start work on my firebelly and just got delivery of a Stonehorn, battalion and 3 boxes of Mournfangs...i'm literally drooling at the amount of spare bits!

Great tutorial, would drybrushing skull white over black primer be a decent substitute for the dust effect? I would like to see how you paint your Gnoblars as well, there arent many decent guides...or any I can think of that involve painting Gnoblars that look really good. Even though they arent really significant, I like a consistent quality throughout my army.

Drybrushing would work as long as it was built up slowly...but you wouldn't get a zenithal effect...i.e. lighter on top and shadowy on the bottom...
best thing to do is use a white spray and dust it!
Gnoblar wise...i will have a few trappers to do eventually but i'm sticking with painting to ogres for the time being! You never know though..i may do the odd gnoblar or a base and then i shall do a tutorial for it!

Dreadboi man you're ogre skin looks unbelievable  I just have a question (Sorry pretty new with painting) What do you mean by the white dusting effect? Do you spray the whole model black and then spray it white and quickly brush it or something? Just a little confused

Dusting means just a light and quick pass of the white paint usually from the top.

also... is it really necessary to get all that paint unto your nails? :p

@ Sprru: As ecwh070 said, it's like a light pass of the spray side to side... concentrate the spray from a high angle - shadows stay black and the higher surfaces are lighter!

@ ecwh070: It's obligatory to get as much paint on my nails! ahaha it's a combination of holding the model when i spray it and then using it as a quick mixing palette!

The closest one i can find would be Vallejo Game Colour Extra Opaque 72140 Heavy Skintone....this is great as it has the same coverage that tallarn flesh has...

I don't quite understand what you mean by a GW equivalent (as it's GW!)...but colour wise..if you were averse to using foundation...i suppose dwarf flesh would be fairly close?

I can't advocate how much i love tallarn flesh though...easy coverage and a great tone!

Was jsut asking since I am out of Tallarn and need to finish up some Ogres.  Thanks though.

I have done one for the thundertusk and have a mournfang + a more comprehensive take on rusted weapons/armor...

I have a general Gnoblog with a firebelly in there too...just no real step by step for him as to be honest, i didn't enjoy painting the flames/smoke!

How do you glue them together when you paint them in bits? I've just got into Warhammer and have bought my first models but the shop guys were telling me to assemble them fully first because the paint stops them gluing together. Do you have to scrape the glue off the bits that need gluing?

You don't paint the parts where you will glue, like the back of the stonehorn head. Or arm sockets etc.
I also paint my minis in seperate bits (I leave weapons, heads and minor details off) as I can paint more accurately.

I have already glued my Bulls but will leave the weapons off the rest,

I guess you mask of the bits you don't want painting when spraying primer then? I was thinking using some cheap blue-tac?

Blutac would be fine 

Actually you can leave them for things like black and white (or any) undercoats but no more. Thats how I have done it and it glues fine!
