Ogre Blog of Awesomeness - Red Peak Tribe 

The following will document the attempt made (by the fore mentioned CaptScott, a 'fluffy' yet competitive gamer) to collect, and paint(!) a 2000 point Ogre Army (of awesomeness!).  Each entry will focus on one component of the army, converted and painted to a reasonably good table-top standard.

82.  Small, but many -have a gnoblar horde break an enemy unit.
83. We're all there - have a unit of at least 12 ogres get into the enemy deployment zone with no casualties taken.
84. My horde is bigger then yours - have an ogre horde break an enemy horde.
85. So much power lost - have an ogre unit roll 10 or more and still fail a charge.
86. Rambo or Conan? - have a lone ogre lose a combat but pass his break test.
87. You call that a club?.... THIS is a club - cause 6 S10's with Siegebreaker on a unit occupying a building.
88. Ogre zoo - Paint at least one of the Stonehorn, Thundertusk, Mournfang and Sabretusk models.
89. She's a Maaaaaneater! - paint the female Maneater model.
90. They're not bloody Eagles you know! - Run a Hunter in a unit of 5 or more Sabretusks.
91. But they're soooo cute! - Fill your whole core with Gnoblars.
92. Bird brained - kill an enemy model with a hunter's blood vulture.
93. Timber! - lose an ogre when a giant (yours or your opponent's) falls on one of your units.
94. Thinling roast! - kill 5 enemy models with a single firebelly breath weapon blast
95. Cats paw - Kill a skaven weapon team with a sabretusk
96. Halitosis - use 3 breath weapon attacks in a single game.
97. Billy no-mates - field an army with only 1 character in it.  He cannot deploy in a unit or join one.  Bonus if he survives the game.
98. Steady now! - Use freehand to paint a banner for an ogre unit
99. Da lads! - post a pic of your entire army on the stronghold in your ogre gnoblog.
100. Feast master - place 1st, or best in race, at a tournament.
101. Brrrr! - field more than one thundertusk in your army OR more than one unit of yhettes in your army

1st Update - Tyrant

So the first entry will be the one thing every army needs, a General!  Introducing my Tyrant (name under construction... Grut the Conquerer?)



Why I Chose a Tyrant:  First off, when it came to the choice of General you can't go past a Tyrant.  From the start I wanted the army to be close combat orientated and nothing will bash more heads in my army than this bad boy.  The Tyrant also offers great opportunities for converting/paining a figurehead for your army.

Equipment Options:  Thundermace, Wyrdstone Necklace, Mawseeker, Heavy Armour, Luck Gnoblar.

The biggest choice when converting a Tyrant is whether to equip him with a great weapon, hand weapon, or multiple hand weapons.  In the end I went for the great weapon.  The main reason being: it looks cool  ; gives you the ability to equip either a standard GW (cheap) or the Thundermace (for infantry decimation), though with the latest army book this item is alot more expensive.  So all up not bad.  I was sorely tempted to go the handweapon route to take the +3 attack sword with a potion of Strength, but the cool factor of the great weapon won out (both the look and the idea of landing a thundermace strike on a big soft horde unit).

Because of the 8th book changes I'll likely be ruinning him with a regular GW, but of course that provides the fantastic benefit of being cheap, so I can afford to include lots of other magical goodies!  For protection I'll likely grab a 5+ ward save and the re-roll to wound item (haven't got the book n me at the moment).  Crown of Command to add some stablity to my list is a prime choice as well.

How I made him:





Made from a minotaur body, heavily filed down around the back and neck.  The legs were also filed down a bit an smoothed over with greenstuff to create pants.  Feet were cut back and boot sculpted on.  Another problem I've seen in other Mino conversions is that the final model looks too 'fleshy' due to the extremely bulked out Mino model.  To counter this in addition to filing down, I sculpted a pelt over his shoulders (my first attempt at fur!).

You'll notice in the wip shots that I initially had a different head option.  Initially I liked this head, however as many said it was a bit small for the body, and in addition I wanted to go for a more armoured feel, so I opted for an Irongut bellower head with the horns from a chaos marauder glued on.  Fairly cool I think, I glued to horns to the front to get a Hellboy feel.  The axe head was also replaced for something slightly small, and re-angled so it wouldn't hang over the front of the base as much.  For size comparison check out the following, next to a bull and an Irongut (sneak peeks!).  Big, but not too big I think.  About right.



As for painting, used 'bronzed flesh' rather than the standard greyinsh skin tones.  It's a little orangish so I might try to highlight it a little in the future by mixing in some elf-flesh.  Brown, reds, silver and gold round it out and will be the palette for future models.

2nd Update - Ogre Bulls!

Quick update, had most of these finished already.  The second thing every army needs, a good solid troop choice, and you can't get more solid (or dense/thick/flabby) than Ogre Bulls.



Overall I'm happy with them, colours aren't quite right in the photo but close enough.  I've chosen broad red tattoos/warpaint for this unit, firstly as red is part of my colour scheme, but additionally as it cuts down on the amount of exposed flesh which across a whole army can be quite dominating and bland.



I put in a top down shot to here mainly to show the basing (as well as the warpaint).  Originally I wanted to go for a desert scheme with bases loaded with sand and bones, however with the red/brown scheme I had the colours looked a little bland, so I darkened patches of the 'sand' to make dirt and added patches of static grass.  Overall this had a huge effect on the models, really brightening them up.

Why I Chose Bulls:

As we all know every army needs a solid selection of core choices, and Bulls are ours (in the 7th ed book they are even a requirement).  Better yet bulls are one of our best units, in 8th it all seems to be about big units, and bulls are our most cost effective unit.  High strength, high toughness, multi wounds, multi attacks, armour piercing, bull charging, stomping goodness!  There even a few math-hammerers about who say naked bulls are the best troops we have (and the psychological impact of fighting a naked bull needs to be taken into account as well...).

Unit Options:

Command.  I opted for a full command (champ, standard and bellower from left to right in pic above).  The musician is an obvious choice for the many benefits they offer in 8th.  I also wanted a standard not only for the small combat re bonus but also for the occasional fun Blood and Glory missions.  The champ was a hard one, with many ogre players feeling they cost too many points.  I tend to agree but kept mine in for two reasons, firstly the bonus VP's awarded for when a unit champion kills an enemy character (which is very do-able with ogres), seconfly they can be used to soak up enemy challenges if I want my characters protected (or in my case, squishin rank and file!).  However all that being said the champ model I've used (duel iron-fister) could also pass as a standard rank and file, so I could use him that way in future battles.

Equipment.  I went for Iron fists.  While some players argue the points are better spent on more bulls, the advantage of doing so is very minor.  Also the fists enable better defence, look cool, and are very characterful.  And with the ability of our latest book to use them as shields, they confer they give us a 5+ armour save and 6+ ward save in most combats, very useful!

Unit Size.  This was a tough one, how big to take the unit.  In the end 8 sounded about right, having 24 wounds (about the size of a medium infantry unit) and up to 24 attacks if deployed 4 wide (28 with ironfists).  I felt 6 would be too few in 8th edition, and would get beaten in combat by most enemy units if unsupported.  8 also allows 4 wide deployment with the full back rank attacking, enabling the whole unit to be fighting against most opponents.  I may choose to increase them to 10 in the future to ensure they operate at maximum efficiency even after taking a couple of casualties.

How I made them:

Nothing special, fairly standard though I did do some minor converting to make them running (charging).  I sawed of the leading leg and reglued it to angle the body forward, and also repositioned the arms (filling gaps with greenstuff) for a 'running' feel.  See pics below.



Not sure if it was worth it.  You only really notice the overall effect if you're looking for it.

That's it for now.  You may also notice in the original post I've cut back the size of the army to 2000 points.  This is to save points (and cash) for any new plastics that might be coming out in Oct-ogre.

Butcher



As some of you may know my favourite part of the hobby is converting my own characters.  So of course I was going to have a go at my own butchers.  WIP picks below.  I went for a more shamanic rather than butcher feel, converted him to be holding a troll skull fetish, and of course gave him a huge 'guts out' belly to match the fluff.

I also cut the body horizontally and vertically to widen and heighten the model.



Originally I gave him a hand weapon/cleaver.  However with the new army book Butchers now have access to GW's, so I cut that off and converted a huge shamanic staff/log with a bunch of fetishes dangling off.



Overall I'm happy with the model, though not with the paint job.  Though in real life he blends in fine with the rest of the army.

Why a Butcher?

Ah, the humble lvl2.  This is a great choice for our Ogres, great magic, tough as nails, and can hit like a hammer in combat.
 
First question, why a butcher and not a Firebelly.  Firstly they have access to the Great Maw lore, which provides a much more useful list of spells including plenty of cheapish augments for the Ogre units.  Over the course or a match these augments I feel outweigh the Firebellies access to a breath weapon and direct damage spells. 

Additionally the lore allow the Butcher to regain lost wounds with each successful cast, which means I can run him right at the front of the army, not afraid he'll be taken out in cc early (T5 as well).  For the kit out I couldn't go past the new GW option (a Toughness 5 4 wound caster with 3 Strength 6 attacks!!!)    On top of this I'll definitely be taking a defensive arcane item, either the humble dispel scroll or (of course) the Hellheart.

Finallly I plan on running a lvl4 or another lvl2 with this butcher, and with both taking Maw magic I have a great chance of being to get the spells I want.

Gorger

Next up a gorger.  And yep I went for the el'cheapo home conversion option.

Made from an IoB rat ogre with a Irongut head.  Simple!  I like to imagine that rather than an actual Gorger, he's an exotic cross-breed pet that the Tyrant picked up trading with the skaven.  Modelled him to be standing on a rocky outcrop to give a bit more height.





Why a Gorger?

Well I like the model....  In the new 8th book you're probably better off taking other fast options such as sabretusks, mournfang cav, yhetees of even maneaters.  However one is pretty cheap even though you run the risk of him ambushing late in the game.  Good for the fun factor, warmachine hunting, blocking lines of retreat, and simply times when he'll be in the right place at the right time.

And lastly...

WIP Leadbelchers

These guys are straight up leadbelchers, no funky conversions other than to remove the hand holding the cannon for the bellower.  These guys need a bit more painting.  This unit will likely grwo in size, and a more tactical analysis of them will be provided when the unit is fully finished.

Very nice looking stuff! Warm colours suit ogres, imo. As you mentioned, you should try some highlighting. It will greatly improve your models. Your conversions are ace though, I especially like the running bulls. Subtle, but adds a lot of character

Thanks for the positive feed back!  Painting is my weakness, I plan on coming back and attempting more washing/highlighting once the bulk of the army is up to table-top standard.

4th Update - WIP Maneaters!!!

edit:  Just added my Ogre achievement thread, can be seen in the first post. 

My WIP Maneaters, only four for now, but they'll be expanded.  They still need a bit more painting but are game ready.

Now there was no way I wasn't going to convert my own maneaters, as converting is my favourite part of the hobby.



I wanted to go with a professional elite Ogre look, yet retain the independent nature of each ogre.  To that end I've gone with an armoured look with the same colours on each ogre, yet tried to make them all unique.  I'm really pleased with the musician, not only looks cool but is armed with additional hand weapons.  They're only four strong but I plan on going to six, with at least one more great weapon armed model.  I'll post up an in depth tactical review of the unit when I've got the whole unit finished.

The armor could definitely use more rivits (when in doubt, always more rivits), but they look nice. Or, they will after you hit that metal up with some washes/rust.
