My Big Fat Ogre Dipping Thread

After having next to no time to paint, I decided to dip my Ogre army that was patiently waiting on a shelf for more than a year.
Here's the test model!

anyways got any tips for a newbie dipper? im going to have the khador paintset in mail so i have those colours.. just add water on a mixingbowl??
i heard that you have to put 1 part brown and 3 parts water and add them on the brush and then just stab your models and let the water drops do the painting for you.. did i get it right or did i get it wrong?.. (dont want to ruin my new khador models..) any ideas how to dip/wash em?..

That is correct, I use the Army Painter Strong Tone Quickshade.


WinBear, I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with the khador paintset. I just used GW paints straight out of the pot, and then applied the dip with a large brush. It gives more control than actually dipping the model in the can.

The 1st unit is done. The 2nd is already on the way!

They look good! Almost identical to mine in paint scheme aside from the pants ...

Good job.  The extra detailing you did on yours paid off compared to mine.

Well, hes doing what I do, use the dipping stuff but apply with a big brush, cause dipping then having to shake off the excess is a pain and messy as, Army Painter Quickshade is the stuff and I got mine from Maelstrom, free postage from the UK to New Zealand, hell yes!

I have seen minis dipped in the stuff and it was a bit dark for my tastes so I find the brush on approach is better, just need to Testors Dullcote it afterwards cause its shiney as otherwise!

Excellent painting. The butcher is interesting, a very different rendition of the scull mantle

The metal eyepatch can even double as a rockeye depending on how you paint it up, with a fake eye on it perhaps.

Those look wonderful !!  A very clean and neat paint scheme, and me likey.  Off to find that stuff...

The dipping looks like it is paying off.  Any chance you could do a before picture of the next model you dip.  I think it would give people a better frame of reference of what its doing for your models.

Please do! I need to understand this method.. I really like the skin on your models, and the shading on the skin, it looks much better than my own. I would add some more shading on the metal though, its a bit too "shiny" for my taste, but ofc. that is a personal opinion. Hope to see more from you.

Here's the tutorial...

I started by assembling the models and removing the mould lines. This is very important in the dipping process, because the dip tends to pool there if you don't remove them.

I applied PVA glue on the bases and added modelling sand. I undercoated the models black.

I then painted all the basecoats.

The colors I used are:

Skin: Commando Khaki
Pants: Gretchin Green
Boots, straps: Calthan Brown
Wood: Bestial Brown
Steel: Boltgun Metal
Gold: Brazen Brass
Stone: Codex Grey
Base: Graveyard Earth

This is what I got:



For applying the dip, I used GW's Large Flat Drybrush. I waited for about a minute after I painted a generous amount of the dip on the model and the base, and using the brush, I removed the exess dip wherever it pooled too much.   

It looked like this:



I cleaned the brush with some nitro thinner, and left the models to dry for 24 hours in a well ventilated place (it stinks!).

I then sprayed them with a layer of anti-shine spray, too get rid of the annoying glossy finish.

The last step was to tidy up the base. I quickly drybrushed it with some lighter tones, and painted the rim with Bestial Brown.

The final result:

It's just the photo. Quickshade does produce an annoying amount of glossiness, but what you see is after 2 or 3 layers of dullcoat. I' ll have better photos next time

No, I just wanted to represent the Beastkiller Big Name. And I also thought it looks good for Giantbreaker. And just now you gave me a new idea!

My first two Maneaters!

They look excellent - the brushing on of the dip works really well.

The gnoblar's skin looks pretty good as well - is that just a camo green base coat?

The beast butchers belly looks like a face, the nipples as eyes.
Love the totem aswell, I was never a fan of dipping seemed the lazy option but your models are fantastic!

Wow I'd be more than happy if any of mine turn out like those-That's it, I've qubbled and quabbled over dipping but I'm gonna try it with a brush.

Really like the Lore of Beasts Butcher-Was going to try a Hunter with the Stonehorn bits I've got left over but looks like he might take a turn for the Maw.

I never really noticed the mold lines tbh, the gap on the mantle I've discovered is a pain however no matter how I try to assembled it. I was going to use GS, but have some of the brush on variety now. Not tried it yet, but may give it a blast.

Anyone got any tips on using it? The guy at the local GW said to apply it like paint which is fine, I'm just concerned about obscuring any details, or thinning it too much.

It's mainly the left horn from the Ironblaster. I chopped of the tip, and  fitted it with the horn bearing hand from the mournfangs. I cut the mournfang horn and turned it upside down to make the right fit with the ironblaster horn.

The big horn also needed to be cut at shoulder's height, so it could be tilted slightly to the front of the model.

Have a Gnobbo from me as well! Your Gnoblog contains logs of nice ideas and all are well executed, but the Musician is just ace!

The conversions on the butcher and bellower are absolutely fantastic. Kudos to you on both counts! I must admit that I'm a little surprised by how neat and polished your dipped minis are. Stunning work.

Now that's the type of musical instrument that I can see ogres using.  Great job!

That musician is amazing. Really love the fact it wraps around him like that. Will there be straps attached to balance out the weight in theory of him carrying it?

I was thinking chains, although we could assume that the horn is screwed on his back (ouch!), since it has those iron bands at the right spot.

Have another Gnoblar-I'm sorry to say I will be 'borrowing' the Musician idea. That looks sublime 

...at this rate we'll soon be setting up an Ogre marching band!   

I intend to have a variety of horns and drummers in my army, and am thinking of bagpipes for the Maneaters...   

I have to say this is one of the best 'dipped' army threads I've ever seen, you're just getting better and better, it's down to a fine art now.

Keep up the good work, the conversions are brilliant as well; I fully expect your musician idea to be copied quite a lot!

That horn turned out really well! Big and impressive, yet somehow it doesn't strike me as over the top. Great painting too.

Yes, that's right, I tried to depict the horn's sound this way. Poor empire guy!

I used Mechrite Red and Plague Brown (the Vallejo equivalent of Bubonic Brown).

The banner bit is from the Marauder Horsemen sprue.

What's the receipe for that mournfang's white fur? White+strong tone?  Brown+drybrushed white+strong tone? Tnx a lot

The fur-less skin is Tallarn Flesh out of the pot + Strongtone.

Awesome stuff. I've been meaning to try out quickshade for so long, because I keep seeing threads like this with awesome work.
Got several different armies and this would save a lot of time if I quickshaded most/all of the, =)

The owl is from a Wood Elf sprue. Dryads if I remember correctly.

excuse me Head_Not_Found, what do you think about Army Painter's Inks? they look like a bottled version of the quickshade.....but i think that they are more like games workshop's washes (like devlan mud) expecially the thickness.....quickshade is more thick and sticky......instead washes aren't.....

Don't know, I haven't tried them yet. They may be useful if you want to re-work a part of the mini after the dipping process is complete.

PS. I mistakenly read your previous question, about the fur-less parts, as you were obviously referring to parts such as the mournfang's face etc.

The answer is yes!  The process is the same (khemri+dheneb+skull).

I consider using Army Painter as well. Do you still use the Strong Tone? Also, have you any experience with common types of matt varnish? Or is Anti Shine Matt Varnish from Army Painter necessary? I would be thankful for your advice.
