BeastMum's Lava Base Tutorial

original thread ↗

A few people have asked me how I do the lava bases in the Ogre Army that I'm working on, so I thought I'd throw together a quick tutorial.  Let me say that most of the ideas here are not my own, so a big thanks to all those people around on the net that I've gleaned them from!

Firstly, take your Ogre.

Using some ripped up cork, glue a rock or two onto the place where the ground is to be.  Using some balls of greenstuff (a good use of those leftovers when you're modelling!), cut them in half and glue them on where the lava is to be as bubbles.

Now, glue some sand onto the ground.

Next, undercoat the whole lot with Chaos Black.

Drybrush the rocks and ground with Codex Grey.

Drybrush again, more lightly, with Fortress Grey.
At this stage you may like to use a Black Ink wash over the ground to thin the grey out a little if need be.

Now, using Chaos Black, tidy up the edges of the ground.. and then paint your model!

Using Mechrite Red, basecoat where the lava is to be.

Now paint the lava using Scab Red (or Red Gore!)

Paint almost to the edge of the previous colour using Blood Red. Feather the edges a little where the two colours meet.

Paint almost to the edge of the previous colour using Blazing Orange. Feather the edges a little where the two colours meet.

Paint almost to the edge of the previous colour using Fiery Orange. Feather the edges a little where the two colours meet.

Paint almost to the edge of the previous colour using Golden Yellow. Feather the edges a little where the two colours meet.

Paint almost to the edge of the previous colour using Sunburst Yellow. Feather the edges a little where the two colours meet.

Paint almost to the edge of the previous colour using Bad Moon Yellow. Feather the edges a little where the two colours meet.

Cover the lava using GW Water Effects, (or I think some PVA glue will have the same effect), and wait patiently for it to dry!

Finally, enjoy your lovely lava base!

Can you make a swamp base tutorial like this?
I want you to know i altered your paint scheme a smidgen but otherwise your tutorial was awesome and my army will thank you for giving me some direction with their bases!

Great tutorial. Worth noting from personal experience, use the water effects not PVA as occasionally sections of PVA will dry quicker than others resulting in white patches and that = bad times for your base :)
