Hello everyone, and welcome to my Ogre Kingdoms Gnoblog!
I have been painting minis for about a year now, after my son (known around the web as 'The BeastKid' ) convinced me to try just painting one model... I've nearly finished painting his Beasts of Chaos army, and now it's time to get serious about the Ogre army that have been waiting around in the wings for a while. I thought what better place to get inspiration than The Butcher's Cauldron!
Anyway, on to the fun visual stuff.. so far, most of the army has been constructed, and I've painted seven Bulls to date. The theme of the army started out as Chinese (the BeastKid studies Chinese at school, and we recently travelled in China on holiday), but the first eight Bulls also stand in as Ogres in the BoC army, so they needed to be nurglifed. My son liked them so much, he changed the whole army theme.. apparently once Papa Nurgle gets his slimy claws in you, there's no turning back!

Right, criticism first. They're not nurgly in the slightest. Chaotic, yes. Nurgle-ish, no.
Positives. You are an incredibly talented painter!!! That standard bearer is incredible Could yo umaybe give a mini walk-through on what you did to achieve that effect?

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
irongutmikey16 Feb 2009
They look awesome! The spawn bits work well with the ogre models, and the head on the first model looks brilliant.
I do agree with justjosh though, they dont really stand out as nurgle in particular, they look more like and undivided warband.
Still,they look brilliant!
Sinnis16 Feb 2009
Brilliant job ! Colors' choice lean them more towards Khorne than Papa Nurgle. But with a whole army of this quality, the result will be impressive, no matter the god they follow !
Randroid16 Feb 2009
I have to agree with the other comments, they aren't terribly "Nurgle". They remind me more of Tz or Khornate inspired Ogres.
I like the conversions though, and the painting and bases are really well done.

Those are some very nice looking bulls. The banner stands out from the unit by a large margin, it is incredible. What's with the green lantern symbol?
If you want to keep the same general look, while making them more Nurgley, single horns and cyclopian eyes are a sure bet. And use more drab colored pants, like grey or brown. Ogres are very resistant to mutation, so they don't have to be covered in pus and boils.

Sure, but green goes a long way to adding the nurgle feel to models!

Firstly, cheers to all of you for making me feel so welcome, and for providing such helpful feedback!
@ just-josh - You're right, they are more Chaotic than Nurgle.. although perhaps their story could be that they're very recent converts, so they have mutated but have not yet become pus-laden and rotting? I have to say I'm not really up on the storyline, gaming side of things, I just make the plastic men look pretty.. Thank you very much for your comments about my painting, I'm flattered! I will see if I can do a walk-through on that banner, I painted it a while back and I'm not sure if I can remember how I did it .
@ irongutmikey - Thank you! The spawn bits are great for muty conversions. I had a few doubters (on the other forum I post on) about the BoC standard skull as a head, but I took their advice and cut off the spike, and I think he worked ok!
@ Sinnis - Thank you! The Beastkid chose red for this regiment's pants, you'll see shortly that the next rank are orange. I confess that I may just be running through the rainbow with regards to their pants! (I have a bit of an obsession with painting in bright colours ) Let's let them worship any god, and just call them 'Mutant' I reckon!
@ Randroid - Thanks! My painting is getting slowly better, and I took much more care with these Ogre bases than I did with the last army. They are quite fun to build! I started out not caring about that stuff, and now I've become far more picky!
@ Talonz - Thank you! I forgot to mention that some of the first bull conversions were done by the BeastKid and one of our wonderful local GW guys... they did a great job! Out of these first four, I am only responsible for the skull headed guy.
@ Reg06 - Thank you! I was pretty proud of that banner myself. He he, Green Lantern symbol.. it does look a bit like that, I hadn't noticed! It comes from back when these guys were going to be Chinese themed - the symbol in the middle has the OK Chaos mark with the BoC Chaos mark inside it, and I went with a Chinesey border.. but I like the Green Lantern idea! Nice call on the resistance of Ogres to mutation.. I'm going along with that! About the pants, as I said earlier bright colours are on the cards due to my obsession (and the BeastKid's request!), but thanks for the suggestions - it's always good to hear other people's opinions! A few of the fully built guys have single horns, and I'll bear that in mind while I'm converting the others. Cyclopian eyes.. such a cool idea, and I love painting eyeballs!!
@ just-josh again - Our BoC army has quite a lot of khaki green skinned models, I like green too!
@ candycake - Thank you, very kind! I will see what I can do about a banner tut. The next Ogre in the queue to be painted has a banner, maybe I should try to take notes on what I'm doing.. it might not be the same as this one though!
Right, here are the next two Ogres already painted.
There's one more who is done but his base was still drying when I left home this morning which I'll post later, and then pics in this diary will slow down whilst I paint some more!!

Those are both great. I like the third arm. If you do another with a weedy arm, it'd be neat to see it scratching the head of the ogre, or some other mundane task (both Nurgle and ogres have a bit of humor to them).

@ Everhunger - Thank you very much! Also, I've changed the Gnoblog title now...
@ Fantasyfreak - Thank you too! I really enjoy painting these guys.. so far! I try to keep my standards up
@ Pez - Thank you as well. Don't worry, I show no signs of stopping..
@ Kallus - Thanks to you too. I love those wings as well, they're grotesque! Glad you like the Gnoblar contrast, I wasn't sure at first but they've grown on me..
@ skraggy - Thanks for taking the time to look at my Beastmen blog! They were my first army painting attempt, and as such to begin with I didn't pay attention to thinning my paints, or basing in anything other than Goblin Green with bare sand and grass.. now it's onward onward and ever upward!! These bases are fun to do! Water Effects is great stuff..
For those of you who asked, here's a quick mini painting tutorial for that banner:
As I think I mentioned earlier, this banner came about from the idea that the army was going to be Chinese themed. I was trying to create a Chinese cloud effect a bit like this:
So. First undercoat the banner with Chaos Black. Then paint the entire banner Scorched Brown. For the rear of the banner, work highlights up on raised areas firstly with Scorched Brown/Graveyard Earth mix, through to Graveyard Earth.
On the front of the banner paint the initial cloud outlines (as per the picture, swirl, lump lump lump etc. ) in Graveyard Earth. (I practised drawing the outlines with a pencil on paper first, so I could get the feel for how to paint them!) Then use Kommando Khaki to go over these outlines, leaving some of the Graveyard Earth showing. Then highlight again with Bleached Bone. Try to do the highlights on one side of the tops and bottoms of the cloud outlines only. Then go back over as necessary with Graveyard Earth to tidy up any mistakes..
And dont forget to thin your paints!!
If anyone has any questions, ask away. As I think I said before, I'll try to take piccies of the next one as I do it - what does everyone think - same banner? Same banner different colours? Same idea, same colours, different shaped swirlys? Same idea, different colours, different shaped swirls? Maybe I need a poll

@ Zabo - Ok, here's a quick mini tutorial on the lava bases!
Requirements:
Take a thin sheet of cork (I got mine at an art supply shop), rip two or three pieces off, and glue them together with PVA glue to make a rock or two. Leaving the area where the lava will go bare, glue the rock to the base with PVA, and glue sand everywhere else (I like to try to include some of the bigger 'rocks' from the sand - throw them on the glue first). Paint over the sand and rock with watered down PVA. For bubbles in the lava, pre-prepare greenstuff by rolling it into some small balls - when dry, cut these in half and glue to the base. When this is dry, undercoat with Chaos Black. Then drybrush the sand and rock first using Codex Grey, then more lightly with Fortress Grey.
Now for the lava itself - paint the whole area right up to the rocks with Mechrite Red -not totally necessary, just gives good coverage so you only need one layer of the next step - which is to paint the entire area with Scab Red. When this is dry, using Blood Red, paint a few mm away from the edge of the Scab Red, and using another damp brush (or the same brush, licked, will do! ) whilst this paint is still wet, stroke from the Scab Red side into the Blood Red to blend the edges a bit, then let it dry. Repeat this process, leaving a few mm of the last colour each time, through Blazing Orange, Firey Orange, Golden Yellow, Sunburst Yellow, and Bad Moon Yellow. Do this over the top of the bubbles as well, and you can do a final highlight on top of the bubbles with some Skull White if you like. When all of this is dry, add a layer of GW Water Effects, leave it to dry, and Voila! A lava base!!
@ just-josh - Why thank you! Pet gnoblar? Where is he, and what do I do with him!? Wow!! And that's one vote for same same, just different colours... thank you! (Poll may come later..)

The standard bearer looks great. I think the skull is enough of a symbol with how awesome the banner is, but I also agree with BeastDad about the pattern- it looks pretty frilly for ogres (actually, my old house had some shades that were almost that exact same pattern, but in shiny lime green velour). How about a splash of blood across it, like the butcher annointed the banner? Subtle though, not like a Khorne kitchen floor (I'm thinking of the Watchmen smiley face here, just the right amount of blood).

@ 1337BUTCHER - Thanks very much! And thanks for your input on Pikey the Gnoblar..
@ Reg06 - It is SO '70s curtains.. or carpet..I don't know how that happened! I love your blood idea, and was about to go with it, when someone on another forum suggested that in fact "Muddy foot prints! That's why Granny Gold-Gut sent the Bulls to war. Wipe your feet!"... so as you will see, I went with that. I'm definitely saving the blood idea for the next banner though!
@ just-josh - He he, dratted Gran.. and thank you for the free-hand compliment - you really should look on CMoN though, there's freehand on there that will totally blow your mind!

That's much nicer. The maw is a great addition, and serves as an emphasis of the skull rather than being its own thing, so that works very well. And the foot prints are hilarious, and like the maw they provide enough ogre to make the carpet acceptable.

Not much further along on that Scrappy, but here's a Giant that I painted a while ago, and just refreshed last night with some quick freehand on his pants:
The cow addition was mine, but the rest of him came like that from eBay.. four arms, pustulous skin and all!!
One of the items I put up for auction (in a recent Bushfire Appeal Fundraiser on another site I post on) was my painting services, ie. I would paint a model (or five! depending on size). Not that I'm terribly skilled, but I know there are people who just don't like the painting side of Warhammer.. (my son the BeastKid for instance!! ) so on the weekend I'm off to pick up a Giant from GW - he's to go in a Night Goblin army, so that should be fun! Again, not getting me any further into our OK army.. but for a worthy cause!!

Nicely done. You seem to be fond of orange, which isn't surprising considering how well it's done. The pustulent flesh might warrant some more highlights. It looks fine now, but it is easy to overlook the pustulent flesh in favor of more eye-catching things.

Thanks for the flesh suggestion, you're right, it does get a bit lost with the pants. I had planned a far more muted pallette, but the BeastKid requested that he match the Shaggoth and Centigors.. yes, orange has been a bit of a theme of late! The whole Beast army is pretty colourful, the orange just crept in at the end. I guess the Ogres will be pretty colourful too! I find it's much more fun to paint different colours (and try to tie the army together some other way) rather than a whole army in one colour.. my enthusiasm wanes after a while! It's not very 'serious army' though, and won't win me any prizes I'm sure. Still, as long as the BeastKid is happy, and I'm having fun, it's all good!

@ Reg06 - You are too kind! Best painted at any tournament won't be happening any time soon unfortunately, you have to paint your own army, and as the BeastKid doesn't paint, and I don't play, we're all out of luck! So - winning, schminning; Con, Schmon...
@Krosan - Thank you! I like it when I get to paint banners, they're fun!

Well, I now have a new Giant in my posession, ready to go, but meanwhile I've done some work on the Scrappy.. well to be more precise, on the Rhinox that pulls it! Here he is:
I took some photos along the way to make a tutorial, just in case anyone would like to know how he got like that. I haven't quite decided what colour to paint the Maw on his cloth yet, so that's not quite done.

Thanks Reg06! Too bright? What makes you think that? Is it his fur? Or his skin.. or his horns.... (or that lairy purple cloth? ) He is living on a volcano, so maybe that explains it... his Rhinoxen family have slowly mutated to cope with their environmental factors over the centuries..

The fur and the flesh mostly, they're rather light colored (rather than the standard gray or brown), and really pop. Maybe it's just my eyes were unaccustomed to the light after being in the dark for too long. and it shocked my pupils.
and as it often is, I'm basing this entirely upon my own opinion (so take it with a pound of salt), not on any actual fluff rule that states rhinoxen have to be drab.

Awesome sauce. I like the skin best. I like it because it's green, but it's a natural color (and it's nice to see a natural green that's not dark green). And the base is awesome. I like the look of the best, how it's all drab except for the flaming orange cloth. I think you could do better on the wood though. And the hair. They're both good, but I think they could use more highlights (extreme highlights tend to work well on hair and wood).

What a paint job! That is awesome, I wish I could paint like that and as Reg said the base is very good and you could include more extreme highlights on the wood and hair to make it look slighty better. But other than that brilliant model.

I loooove the melting and hanging gnoblars!! It really looks great, i will have to try doing something like that, it really gives the unit a great unity, ties it all together.. If i can do one tiny suggestion to your melting gnoblar, it would be to add a few flames in greenstuff, or something..To make the clothes catch on fire. I think it is missing that, and it would just give it that little nudge which would make it flawless.

I love your unit fillers They are superb. The only quibble I have is the one dangling by chain. Whilst in concept, it is sublime, the execution is a tiny bit lacklustre. I say this not due to painting, but due to the way the chain looks like it isn't hanging from rock but almost floating... This is due to the rigidity of the chain being used, either inherently so, or as a direct result of glue... Overall though, the unit fillers are fantastic, and my negativity isn't in anyway derogatory, but more constructive

@ Karchev - Thank you. I think he's falling in. And I agree about adding something to him!
@ just-josh - Why, thank you! You're completely right about the Gnoblar's chain, it was a bit unrealistic. Unfortunately before it could be fixed, the BeastKid phoned me from our local GW to say the lads wanted to enter the Gnoblar unit in last year's GD, so off they went, unfixed.. ah well! They made it to the nationals, so I was pretty chuffed, given that I hadn't planned for them to be anything but a quick tabletop unit! But chain help is required, I'll put it on the to do list. BTW, constructive criticism is always welcomed, how else will improvement be made?
Just not too much CC on the next few models until I get my painting eye/hand back in practise!
Irongut #2, musician - the BeastKid wanted an African Ogre, and this was the best I could do! Not really that happy with him, but it's over now...

@ Lexy - Thanks! Yes, I guess BeastsMum maybe..
@ StoneDog - Thank you! And I can tell you it's good to be back - I was missing the painting, but just couldn't face it!
@ Randroid - Hehe, yes - and do you think this one stands a chance of NOT getting involved in Warhammer in some way? Hmmmm....
@ Karchev - Why, thank you! Nice to be missed. Glad you like the metal colouring - it actually stems from not being able to do metal very well, and also being a bit lazy! I think it works ok though.

As usual fantastic banners from Beastmum. Another impressive thing showcased by this guy is that you keep finding unique chaos mutations, I would have thought you would have run out of ideas by now .

This could be the last Ogre post for a while, due to the new Beastmen coming out - the BeastKid went a bit beserk on the spending front, and is champing at the bit for his new models to have paint on them!

Stock model I think.
How did you do the base?? Speceficlaly the bubbles in it? It looks like a gurgling swamp, I love it!
Belchfist Beastkiller10 Mar 2010
Loving the bases on the whole - lava looks great - swamp looking great. The only bit I don't like is the fact that Ghorros seems to be on the tiniest island of land (that is circular) around his back hooves, and has nowehre to put his front hooves but in the swamp. how did he get there, without having swampy feet is my point?
inovative stuff with the chaosifying ogres, looking great and i am just loving the banners!

@ Karchev - 10/10 - why thank you!
@ skraggy - One of the new Beast Army releases - the Beastkid has the Ogre army on hold now whilst he reinvents the Beasts/starts up some Warriors!
@ Talonz - The bubbles are greenstuff, rolled into little balls, and cut in half after they harden. Paint the whole base, then cover with water effects (or just plain PVA glue works too!)
@ Belchfist Beastkiller - Thanks! Perhaps Ghorros did a fancy dressage manouver and bounded like a goat to get to that little piece of land, or... I know... Ghorros' mother used a magic spell when he was a child to keep his feet clean, and it never wore off!
Here's some more Beast pics - I repainted the cloth on these guys as it was previously purple and just didn't work so well...
Sorry about the fairly poor photo quality, not sure what's going on there!

as for playing other armies: ogres are the boulder rolling down at you. you can side step it, run away from it or blow it up before it gets to you... but you can never ignore it.

It's been a while since I updated this diary, but as I've started to paint again after the baby, I thought I'd put an Ogrey update! I painted a couple of Beasts to get my eye back in, but the first OK thing I've painted in a long time is this Irongut.

@ Reg06 - Thank you! And yes, as Lexy pointed out, I have done a lava tut Glad you liked it!
@ Lexy - Thanks for fielding that one!
@Gh9st - Thank you! I'm not sure how long you spent on yours (and will go and look for your diary when I have a minute! EDIT - I see you don't have one... time to rectify that!! ), but it takes me a few hours to paint an Ogre. Never really sure exactly how many, as I paint with many interruptions, but could definitely do one in a day!

BeastMum, you have a fantastic looking army. Lot of cool convertions, painting like: wow. Watch the whole topic, it's a joy too see all of your models.
The collours of the lava base is great. Gona use this in my Dark elf army.
Your Gnoblars are very detailed painted and I like the purple skin. The unit fillers + gnoblar convertions you posted more early, make your unit more unike feel.
The gnoblars look great. Also, they look like candy. But still awesome. Do you use GW paints? And as a related question, are the colors that vibrant in person? I like that the gnoblars don't have lava on their bases, it's a nice touch.
