The Yellow and Black Attack! (Pressing on, pressing on!)

original thread ↗

Well, here we go. In this gnoblog I will chronicle the beginnings of the Thundersiege tribe of Ogres, from their current humble beginnings to their rise to glory! ...Or at least, one can hope.

Because I'm new to the hobby and Ogres are my first army, I've decided to post the first couple of entries in "flashback" mode. My memory's pretty good, and that way you can really see the army's very beginning. So, without delay... let the thunder sound!

(Boom)
Flashback 1

The year: 1999, 13 years old. Mom's shopping for new clothes and letting me wander around the shopping center/outdoor mall. There's a store called "Games Workshop" over there, and that sounds interesting. I go inside. There are some guys playing with small models on the table and you know, it looks pretty awesome. Browsing the shelves, I see they have stuff for a game called Warhammer, and for another called... Warhammer 40,000. Just two games sold here? That's kind of odd. The salesman offers to help me, but I tell him I'm just looking. Some of this 40,000 stuff looks cool, though... like Starcraft, kinda. Well, I don't have a lot of time, so I'll go ahead and leave... but the name "Warhammer" keeps sticking in my head.

Flashback 2
The year: 2005. I'm shopping at Virgin Records for Xmas presents for my dad and brother, and now have some time to kill. There's that same store again. This time when I go inside I let the employees give me their whole spiel about the games. It doesn't sound bad. Demo game? Sure. Let's see... Space Marines vs. Tyranids? Pictures of these Space Marine guys are all over the store; they're obviously the poster-boys and I want to try something more interesting. These alien guys look pretty cool. What's that? Biological weapons? Heck yes! We played through the introductory battle (Interjection: I can't remember who won!) and the guy tells me that now's an ideal time to start Tyranids, since they have a new Codex out. It's about now I find out you have to paint the figures yourself. That sounds fun, but... intimidating. I'm not much of an artist...

Flashback 3
2008. It's a Wikipedia day. You know the type? When you keep clicking on links and somehow find yourself going from looking up what day Easter's going to be this year to the different species of rabbits to Latin-American history to real-time strategy games to Magic: the Gathering. Inexplicable, yet it seems to happen fairly regularly around here. Somehow I find myself reading about Warhammer 40,000 on the Wiki'... that sounds familiar. Oh, yeah, it was that game with the Tyranids. Well, let's see... *click* *click* *click*

(Several hours of researching fluff later)

Oh. My. God. I love this setting! It's inspiring as far as story-telling's concerned. This is probably the first time I've read a multi-racial far-future setting where the humans still seemed cool. And... well, I could go on and on. I'm very interested, now. I think I want to give that game a shot... of course, it's no fun without anyone to play with...

A week later, I'm back at that same Games Workshop (sought it out this time!) with my brother. Maybe I can convince him to play. We do the new demo... I'm Space Marines, he's Orks. I'm sold, but he's not convinced. Do the other games here have different rules? Oh, they do... let's try every demo, then. Hey, Fantasy's not bad, it turns out. My brother likes Lord of the Rings the best, though... sigh. So won't be starting Warhammer of either type yet, it seems.

An employee offers me a demo game, but instead of the stream-lined beginner's set out front, a full battle with all the rules in place. I can use any of the armies the store has assembled on display. Let's see... these dinosaur guys look cool. The employee decides to try an army he's never used before. He picks....

Ogres.

I roll horribly all game. The Ogres devour the Lizardmen pretty easily. Oh, well, it was my first try, I'm not too disappointed. Still... those Ogres are going to stick in my memory for some time.

Flashback 4
Later that same year. Life goes on, studies at university continue, and every so often I'll lurk on a 40k forum or browse the Lexicanum wiki to find out more about the setting. Not often, though. Hmm. Warhammer Online? People are saying it looks like a WoW rip-off and I know better, of course; still, I do like WoW, it won't be easy for a game to win me away from it. Besides, it's Fantasy, and I haven't bothered to look into WHFB like I have 40k. I bet it's not as cool.

*click* *click* *click*

Oh. My. God. I should have trusted them, shouldn't I have? This is obviously the same talented bunch. I'll look closer at Warhammer Fantasy when I get a chance... but finals week says that won't be any time soon....

Flashback 5
February 2009. I have a bit of extra birthday money. I buy myself Codex: Chaos Space Marines as a minor treat and, it turns out, my friend Jake at college plays! Well, looks like I have someone to play with if I start. Now it's just a matter of saving up some money.

March 2009. We're having game nights every Saturday, playing Munchkin, Arkham Horror, Halo, and/or Gears of War as the mood takes us. Some of us talk about adding an RPG to that mix. We elect Jake GM, since it's his apartment, after all. He agrees, but has an idea... instead of D&D, he wants to do Warhammer Fantasy Role Play. Hmmm. I'm sure the game plays well, but I'm the only other person there who's heard the name "Warhammer" before. Tell us more about the setting, GM.

So, it's set on Earth... with the Empire as a pseudo-Germany and viking dwarfs... interesting. Chaos Norsemen, yeah, I'd heard of them, and... Ogre Kingdoms? Like... the Mongolian hordes, except with ogres? Dude. Dude.

Dude.

That sounds flippin' sweet. Let's play.

April 2009. The RPG was a bust... we're all just too buy for that sort of commitment. But I've decided to play WHFB as well as 40k, now... some day. Jake suggests I look at the armies available and pick which one I'll use when I get the money. Let's see. Empire... nah. I like the 40k Empire, but this isn't quite the same. It has a lot of the same feel, sure, but not the little details that caught my imagination. Chaos? I want to play Chaos in 40k, and for Fantasy I want to try something different instead of just making the same army in two games. Elves? Nah. Dwarfs? Jake plays Dwarfs, and mirror matches sound like a lame way to start off. Skaven are nifty. So are Lizardmen... but I had a bad experience with them. Orcs... maybe. But I'd need so many Boyz to field an army, that'd be expensive. Especially compared to something like...

Ogres.

Ogres don't field a lot of models... the battalion box is a 1000-point army by itself, I bet. I can afford that...

Ogres kicked my butt during my first game. I'll never forget that.

Ogres are the most interesting aspect of the Warhammer Fantasy world to me, interpretation-wise. Sure, Warhammer's dwarfs are some of the coolest dwarfs outside of Tolkien, and their orcs are probably the best I've seen even including Tolkien, but these big guys with their giant cannons and sweet mustaches...

"Let's go to that local GW I've been telling you about, Jake. I'm buying me some Ogres."

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

Talk talk talk, nice, but we want some pictures :P

Just kidding, nice introduction of your long way to the maw.

Pictures will come, I promise! But I'm an English major with an emphasis in creative writing... words are what I do. :P

Be grateful I don't do the entire blog in verse. Of course, I'd get tired of that faster than anyone else would.

And now, as promised, pictures! Sorry they aren't the best quality, though; I'll find a better camera soon.

The first Bull of the Thundersiege tribe!

Bruiser with battle-standard.

The Bull with the BSBruiser.

The battle standard itself.

The tyrant, Shanyu Giantbreaker Thundersieger (with his loyal gnoblar servants!)

Everyone together with a bellower.

That's all of the army I have so far. More to come!
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
very nice reading :)

oh and i like the one with yellow and black in the face.
More are going to have warpaint like that. (The bellower might, if I can think of a pattern I like for him.

Pics are very out of focus unfortunately.
Pics are very out of focus unfortunately.
Indeed. :(

I'll be working on that for the next batch of pictures (probably not until I get some more models painted, though), but that's taking a back seat with it being finals week and all.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
My goodness, it's been some time since I've updated this thread. Been busy with school and such. But even though my gnoblog has been neglected, my army itself has not! So models-built update. So far, I've assembled:

6 Bulls
3 Ironguts
4 Leadbelchers

I still have components to make 1 more Ogre—probably an Irongut, once I decide how I want him to look.

Tomorrow, I'm picking up a giant. I'm planning to paint him with pale-blue, icy looking skin. He also will need a name.

As I've mentioned here, I'm planning to use Skaven clanrats to represent gnoblar fighters, though trappers will still be gnoblars. Between the ogres, ratmen, gnobbos, and giant, I'm considering picking up some yhetees now, just so I have a very diverse army on the table. We shall see.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
Progress on the giant is progressing steadily. I am really enjoying the model, it has lots of pieces and options and I'm just now realizing how much my painting skills have improved. Hopefully will post a picture soon, either of the WIP or the finished slave-frostgiant.

Still thinking of names. Considering either Jeorgi Froststorm or Gimori Clefthoof, unless I can think of something immediately better.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
Homework preventing me from finishing the giant. Friend of mine who plays High Elves recommended the name "Olaf" for him, and I like it. Her boyfriend, however, is complaining that it sounds too much like a Dwarf name—and he plays Dwarfs, so that's slightly annoying to him. It is rather Scandinavian, so he's right I suppose, but I can't help but think of Norse mythology when I think of frost giants.

As for the giant itself, he's coming along well so far—I've almost finished painting his skin, and boy there's a lot of it. I'm pleased with it enough that my earlier models are beginning to look rather shabby by comparison... I should have waited to paint the Tyrant model, I really should have. I'll have to pick up another eventually and do a better job. The current one will live on as a Bruiser. Still, I'm realizing that my skills are improving with every model, and beginning to see that I'll be buying, building, and painting ogre models for years and years to come, and even the naked Bulls will look better than the last bunch. But the first several models I've painted will occupy a different, special place, I suppose.

Once the giant is done, the next project I want to start is a Butcher. Will be some time before I can buy one, though. Maybe time to start dropping Xmas hints...
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
Okay! Better pictures have arrived. Ignore any dwarfs, space marines, &c. that you see behind the ogres... they aren't mine.

First, a unit of Bulls.

And the bellower from earlier got some warpaint of his own.

Standard:

Tyrant:

And the most recently finished model, a lonely Irongut.

Here's everyone that's finished so far.

Now, the works-in-progress:

Irongut bellower:

Leadbelchers:

And the frost giant who, coincidentally, also features my first attempt at a Maw symbol:

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Thanks a lot JJ! I'm putting some variety within the colors though, as you can see. The Ironguts, as the more elite forces, wear black with some yellow trim; the Leadbelchers, being specialists, wear a paler shade of yellow; and the Bulls, being the "little guys," don't get to wear the colors, though they do paint them on. This is my thinking, at least. Don't know if Olaf's going to have any warpaint yet.

Looks pretty good, I would work on your white for teeth etc and find a way to tone down the yellow or fill it out, possibly a layer of iyaden darksun

The yellow has been quite frustrating, actually. I'm beginning to think that particular pot of paint is cursed... it's spilled multiple times and never seems to get me decent coverage the way I want it to or when I want it to. A foundation paint may be just what I need. Thanks! I'll try it out soon.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
So recently I played some 1000 point games against friends: Dark Elves twice, Dwarfs, and Bretonnia. Things I learned:

1. Deployment is more important than I gave it credit for

2. I'm not a fan of naked bulls. The armor penetration is nice, but they died too quickly for it to matter. The bulls wielding the ironfists performed much better.

3. I'm in love with Ironguts as core choices.

4. Giants are better suited to support roles, but that terror causing comes in handy.

Overall, though, it went rather poorly. There was a big difference in experience, as I just started my first army and my friends have been playing for years, but luckily they're all gracious winners and great chaps and helped show me what I did wrong. Getting the hang of things slowly.

With all that learned, the other night I played a larger game of 2250 against Dark Elves again, borrowing and proxying models to fill things up ("This bolt thrower is actually a Maneater..."). That went MUCH better than the 1000 point games. I still lost, but it was darn close throughout. The size of the list gave me a bit more breathing room in taking the things I wanted, and I tried to put the things I learned to good use. With it still fresh in memory, I'm hoping to post a report of the battle soon, once I get a copy of my friend's list so I can post it accurately.

EDIT: My gnoblog just hit two pages! This is exciting. I really do feel as though my army is coming along, just as I'd hoped.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
So I'm realizing I haven't really put up any of the fluff or even introductory material on my tribe. I'm thinking about doing a bit of cleaning up around this blog, at least writing a new first post to better introduce the tribe and the content here. So for archival purposes, here's the first post as it currently is, in its originally posted form:

yellow is one of those frustraitng colours to paint the foundation paints do help iyanden isn't the best colour for painting yellow which  i have found out by doing trial and error on some of my models,  tau sept ochre (i think thats how you spell it) is a better colour to start of the yellow as it is closer to golden yellow than iyanden darksun but it is a personal preferance to what colour you  use
i hope this helps

Well, I'm planning on adding some Maneaters to my force. And while GW's Maneater models are all great, I'm still considering my options as to what to use.

Converting some out of Irongut models is nice and cost effective, and done right produces a good and unique looking Maneater model. The one (very minor) drawback that I see is that standard plastic ogre bodies are a touch smaller than the metal ones, so it'd be nice if the Maneaters stood out a bit more, size-wise.

Because I use Skaven clanrats to stand in for gnoblar fighters, some of my Warhammer buddies have suggested I use Rat Ogres as Maneaters. That'd certainly make them stand out, and they'd be exotic enough. A drawback from a fluffy perspective, though, is that I think it'd be odd if the Skaven that hang around with my tribe would have that much trust and political power to bring out those kinds of units. I've also been considering using Rat Ogres as Yhetees, which makes a bit more sense to me.

Another suggestion I've been given is 40k Ogryn models. I do kind of like the look of this guy especially:

But it may be just a bit too futuristic looking to fit in. Conversion work would help there, as it'd be easy enough to get rid of the Imperial symbols, but the weaponry might be a tad overkill.

Regarding the official Maneater models:
*I'm probably going to try and convert the Paymaster Maneater into a new Tyrant/Bruiser; I love my current Tyrant model, but he's simply the standard GW Tyrant and I've kind of been craving something a bit more personalized after seeing some of the other gnoblogs. That means using a second Paymaster Maneater as "himself" is probably out.
*Pirate Maneater is awesome, and is the only one that comes with a brace of handguns on his gutplate, making things easy. But if I use something else mentioned above for one of the other Maneaters, he may not match the rest. On the other hand, I'm probably buying him regardless, whether I use him on the table-top or not, just because the model is sweet.
*I'm not a fan of the Imperial or Araby models. They're nice, they just don't quite do it for me.
*Ninja and Lady are kind of tempting choices; they're kind of silly models, but there's nothing wrong with that. I like models with character. But usually when I've seen other people using those, they wind up basing a portion of the army around them. I want my Maneaters to stand out, yes, but I don't want them to steal the focus away from the rest of the army. I think Ninja and Lady may do just that.

Well, anyways: any other suggestions or considerations, either regarding things I mentioned above or new ideas?

So I finally visited the Los Angeles Bunker yesterday. As far as store content goes, they didn't have much more than my usual store over at Orange County; but they had way more gaming space, the store-display armies were better done, and more people were there hanging out and joking with the staff. I like it a lot more, but there was the usual problem of redshirts who don't recognize you assuming you don't know anything. (This mostly came up when I mentioned that I hadn't quite yet decided whether I want to play Orks or Chaos in WH40k. I like both armies. But the redshirt went on to explain the difference between them: the orks were xenos and thus hated by the Empire of Mankind, which had created the Space Marines, but some of them had blah blah blah...)

All in all though, I liked the place and will probably go back soon. Interestingly enough, the redshirts tried to talk me into picking up Blood Bowl of all things. Though I don't think I'll leave my usual store behind: it has the huge advantage of being old and familiar, and that's where all the events that happened in the flashbacks took place.

Sounds like you are learning a lot about warhammer. Good for you. I like your color scheme a lot, but can I tell you one of the secrets on making a great looking model?

THE base! It makes a decent model look like an awesome masterpiece, and it is in fact quite easy to do. There are many ways to do this, but the most basic (well tested, it works) is applying some gravel. Small stones and sand. This is applied to the base using PVA glue, and once the glue is dry you just paint it in a dark color, like brown or black, after this is done drybrush the base with the same color mixed with white.

That will do the trick for you. If you’re up for it, apply some static grass to the base as well, the same way as with the gravel.

Finally, great job with the ogres, they are looking good, and you are already painting outside the lines, meaning that you are already painting tattoos and other stuff that does not exist on the model, and that is great. I only just started doing that a few years ago, and I have been painting miniatures for 14 years now so you are on the right track.

So kudos to you and hope to se more.
So I got a box of Ironguts for Gutmass, and so after building a unit of three, I had an extra body left. I still had one other Ogre body left over from previously, so I've begun converting them into Butchers. It was my first time greenstuffing, so the aprons are a bit sloppier than I would have liked, but on the other hand, clean and neat aprons would be odd for an Ogre Butcher. Waiting for the greenstuff to finish hardening so I can start gluing little bits of food &c. to them. I think they'll be fine when they're done, though maybe not the best conversions ever. Hopefully will post pics later today.

So... everyone remember this guy?

He has become painting priority #1 as of last night, when he took out about 600 points of Dark Elves in a 1,000 point game single-handedly. He also needs a name to commemorate this.

So, college has started again and taken me away from my daily Stronghold visits, but my army hasn't been neglected yet. Birthday in January got me a box of the Clanrats I'd been planning to use as Gnoblars, as well as two Maneaters. I got the Pirate Maneater for my birthday from a friend, so there's that one.

I also got the Paymaster Maneater, and carried out my first full conversion. I have a new Tyrant now, and while he isn't painted yet, he's already the model I'm proudest of: I hope the paintjob doesn't bring him down too much, but now I feel like I have a model that is truly and uniquely mine. The Butchers didn't come out too bad, either, though work on them feels lower priority for whatever reason.

Now, if only I had a camera...  :|

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
