The Rockhide Tribe- Ogres from Ostland

original thread ↗

Well, I´m home after a whole week spent at my grandpa´s. Lots of manual labour, no computer and almost no TV at all.

I do feel physically tired, but on the bright side of things, I had some time to paint my Ogres and do some conversions I had planned for some time now. And because I FINALLY got my hands on a digital camera, I´ve decided to start a gnoblog.

The basic idea:
The Rockhides are a mercenary tribe, often hired by counts of Ostland to add some muscles to the army.

It may be seen as humiliating for an Ogre to take orders from puny humans in funny colored thights, but...they do allow us to eat everything that is left after a battle, so why not? And bashing things to the head is always good fun, no matter whose the head is.

(I have more coherent fluff in my head, but I´m, too tired to write it down at the moment, and it would be unpractical to put everything into one post :))

So, without furter ado, here´s some of the things I´ve done to my Ogres. THey are still not completely finished, but will give you a basic idea about how the army will look like.

Ironguts (well, only one of them- the most finished one :)):

http://i34.tinypic.com/2621qiq.jpg
http://i34.tinypic.com/cnr7q.jpg
http://i38.tinypic.com/sdo3ys.jpg

I plan to add a little white maw-tatoo on the back of every one of the Ogres, just so they don´t forget where they came from. I´m still not sure how it will turn out, though...

Leadbelcher(again, only the most finished one):

The tinypic. com is hell slow now, so I´ll post some more pics (the converted butchers) tommorow. Meanwhile, any feedback on these two guys would be greatly appreciated :)

I only posted the links, as the pics are too large and I´m too lazy to resize them all now.

They are awesome! But the colours all look a tad too flat at the moment... The bronze-ish colour is flat-est of all. I think that an ink or wash may help add a further layer of depth to the painting :)

However, overall, I think you've done a great job! :) Well done mate :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Thank you! :)

Actually, the painting is not yet finished, I still wait for the wash and some other paints I ordered to arrive...
I know it lacks depth, I hope iot will come with the proper wash ;)

I like the color scheme, but it does need more work (which I know you've already stated).

For bronze I use tin bitz, then brazen brass. When the model is finished I give it a wash with watered down brown ink. Works like a charm.

thanks for the advice, maybe I´ll try it out :)

As promised, here are the pictures of the first converted butcher. The conversion is rather messy, but since it is my first ever conversion, and the putty I used is rather user-un-friendly (didn´t have any GS there), I´m quite satisfied.

Little bit of background fluff for this guy:
Ghergut the Hideous: Not many have seen his face and lived to tell the tale. Probably the only exception is the Tyrant ofthe Rockhide tribe himself, who was disgusted to the degree that ordered himto wear the cowl all the time.

It is rather unusual for an Ogre to develop a complex of self-loathing, but that was pretty much the case with Ghergut. Unlike with other creatures, the self loathing on this one presents itself with universal hatred and rage over anything else. And those are pretty valuable on any Butcher...

pictures:

and partially painted (rather messy painting, as the putty is quite a pain to paint...gotta get me some
greenstuff next time):

I´m not sure what colour should I paint the apron(apart from the usual bloodspats). Any suggestions?

Nice work so far Barney. :) For the apron, I would consider bleached bone, or commando khaki. Unfortunately Brazen brass ( I used this colour for my lizards as well) is being discontinued, so I`m not sure I`d buy any at this point. Tin Bitz does make a good base for a bronze colour and can be lightened with any other metal colour for good effect (Ì`ve used gold and chainmail as well as brazen brass, and come out with slightliy different shades, but all work quite nicely).

I was also thining about bleached bone so far...

About the bronze- funny thing is, that the "bronze" is actually a Tamiya Gold Leaf paint,so should be gold- on the other hand, it really looks bronze-ish, and I´ m not complaining.
It still needs some lightening, I´ll begin my experimenting once the paints I ordered arrive...

a quick update:

The paints I ordered still haven´t arived, and I can´t proceed with paining now...But, I tried to make a snowy base, which I plan to use for the whole army. Here are the results:

I still get the feeling it´s missing something, but I can´t quite tell what it is. All in all, I think with a little practice, the bases should be fine(maybe I´ll add some rocks or bitz to the other bases)

I´ve converted the second butcher from the bull sprue. This conversion is quite a lot less messy, but it is also simpler, see for yourself:

Edgut the Sicklehand:
Shortly after the legends of Skragg reached the Rockhide tribe, the young butcher thought it would be quite fashionable to have both arms cut off like the Great prophet had. What he didn´t realize though, was how impractical being a handless may be. While the sickles are great when chopping stuff, they are a lot less usefull when trying to grab something.

But, there is always a solution. In Ogre tribes, the solutions pretty much consist of two things: bashing stuff with a club (obviously not applicable here) and Gnoblars.
Thus, Edgut is carrying a gnoblar, Toothy, in a bag around his neck, who throws stuff into the pot for him. And should the worst come, he can always be sacrificed, as there are plenty of Toothies running around...

another update, this time a little off topic, but I think I can spam my own gnoblog, can´t I? :D

Three pics of Morgianna Le Fay, the older model, which I got off ebay and painted as a gift for my girlfriend. It is not really as good as I had hoped for, but she was happy with it, anyways (yeah, I know it´s becase she´s my girlfriend and would probably be happy even if I gave her a rock or something, but still- it is a nice warm feeling :) )

I only got the paints I needed yesterday at about 5 pm, I started painting the lady at about 6 pm and finished at about 11, with a dinner break(I had the unicorn done before, and the base as well- I tried to make it look like melting snow, not sure if I succeeded, but personally, I´m quite pleased with the result.)

Comments and criticism are most appreciated, as always :)

M. Le Fay looks really nice, good job! I think it's the best painted in the log :)
I like the snow too.

Egut's fluff is cool and also my favourite conversion.

I´m also happy you like the snow on the base, as it was really more of an experiment than a really well thought out stuff

Thank you once again! I really enjoyed converting this guy and writing his fluff. When I saw the gnoblar on the bull sprue, the whole idea just came to me in a second :)

The conversion and fluff behind toothie is awesome! Truly excellent :D

Also, great job on M. Le Fay :D In especially love the melting snow :)

What did you use on the snow bases, and the melting snow? :)

Thank you, thank you! I´m really glad you like ´em :D

For the snow I use a simple, yet pretty effective method: PVA glue and salt. And that´s pretty much it :)
actually, here is a link I found on the net for making snowy bases:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/go.php/go/articlephp/aid/323?
Only I use salt insted of baking soda, as baking soda tends to get yellow with time, and salt has a nice "crystalic shine", kinda like the morning frost :)

As for the melting snow...well, you know, often the greatest ideas come out of mistakes and errors.
I can´t give any exact advice here, as it was more a trial and no-error-in-the-end in this case :)

Roughly, here is what I did:

I glued the grass and two small rocks on the base first. Then I added the "snow" as written in the tutorial above on the rocks and over the grass. Then I sprayed it with matt lack(generic matt lack spray, about 3 pounds for a 400ml spray).

And after that I thought that there is too little snow on the grass, and it doesn´t look melted at all, so I decided to put more snow in there, and covered it with a mixture of PVA and (a little too much) water (to prevent the grains of salt from dropping off the base later), which made the salt solute a bit.

And after that, I sprayed the base with matt lack again, this time I probably put too much on it(the error I was talking about), and it´s the partially soluted salt and the lot of lack that make the "melted" effect, actually :)

Hope it helps a bit :)

And thanks again for your appreciation! :D

no problem mate, I wish you luck with that...it may take several attempts, as my "tutorial" is plainly empiric :)

I like the way the salt looks too. And Moragana is quite well done. Its hard to see in the picture how much texture some of the colour has, but I think that might be something you could to improve on, but it is time consuming. Basically you gradually add one colour to another (say elf flesh to dwarf flesh) and gradually mix, paint a thin layer, lightly dry brush, or highlight) add more light colour, paint or drybrush even lighter, et.) I normally do at least 3 layers this way for colours which cover a large surface. For smaller details I usually do at least 2. It gives a surface more of a textured look.
I think you have a more steady hand than I do. The painting and the details look very exactly done. :)

Thanks, mate :)

Well, if I had enough time(and enough paints, for that matter :D) I´d certainly look into it more, but as I said. The model had to be done in some 5-6 hours, and it was almost midnight when I finished it, so I´m quite happy I managed it to do the way it is.

There is much space for me to impove, though, mostly the inking and highlighting- I dodn´t do much characters till now, mostly painted basic troopers (Orcs, to be precise), and the sheer number of models prevents mo from going in depth with each one, so I have very limited experience with this technique.

I thank you for your appreciation, as well as the advice. Always glad to hear some positive comment, it makes me wanna paint again and even better :D
