My first footsteps in the Ogre Kingdom

original thread ↗

Hi guys,

My name is Rik, i'm 24 from Leeds in the UK.  I have collected Games Workshop for about 12 years, but mainly only painted, playing rarely.  Not even proper armies really, i started an Orc and Goblin Army, then got side tracked with Chaos Dwarfs, then just ended up painting random models i like.   Anyway, i decided i was going to really get into gaming this year and have pushed on completion of my 40K Tyranid Army, and decided i was going to start an Ogre Army.

I have just purchased most of my army and will be painting it over the next month.  I would like to give you my army lsit, that i have compiled mainly through reading these brilliant forums, and the paint scheme i have come up with.  Firstly, the Army list; this is not defintive, but a good start, and i havent had a chance to properly look into magic banner, weapons, big names,  etc - so suggestions welcome.

1 x Bruiser
1 x Butcher
1 x 3 Bulls, Including a blower.
Either 1x8 and 1x4 Iron guts, else 3 x 4 or even 4 x 3 for maneuverability
2 x 2 Leadbelchers (probably flanking)
1 x 3 Yhetees (havent decided what to do about models, i hate the GW ones - probably big convert)
1 x 4 Maneaters

I know there will be alot of contention about Maneaters, Yhetees, Leadbelchers.  Basically, i like the idea of the yhetees moving through cover and 14" charge.  I love the Maneater models, and thats biased me for their inclusion. Leadbelchers may not earn their points, but i think will either distract the enemy, or at least gimme a laugh/make me pull my hair out.  I wish i could have a gorger in, as they sound awesome and i love the models. The only problem is it sounds to me like you might need 2 to be effective, and i dont really know what point games i will generally be playing. Most regularly i would guess it will be 1500-2000.  Also depending on the points lvl, i would like to take a tyrnat/slaughtermaster.

What do you think guys?  For the paint scheme i fancied giving them a really dark, anaemic, scary quality to them, and am probably going to with a similar scheme as this bloodthirster model.

Looking forward to all your feedback. And will post pics as i paint.

Rik

I'm starting painting today, getting very excited about the army.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the army list or colour scheme?

Colour scheme...? Well, there are a tonne of skin tones you can do... GW's generic grey, brown, really pale grey/white, human/pink etc etc. As for clothing, you could choose to do it all the same colour, of all different colours to represent scraps that have been pilfered :) As far as a colour scheme goes, ogres are pretty forgiving :)

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
On your colour scheme choice (JJ pay attention mate ;):P) I think it would look a little different to the Bloodthirster, it would look awesome, but it looks dark and gritty because of the contrast to the wings and armour which is very dark. With ogres there is nothing on the upper body to break that lightness of skin. However i am optimistic of your results and i do like the idea!

The army list sounds fun, and is similar to a casual list I play but with yhettees and a few more maneaters
i would field more, but I can't afford the models at them mo!

Good luck!

Welcome to the Stronghold, Rik!

The color sheme looks interesting. I'm curious to see how it works out. About the army list, I'd go for the models I like best (unless you play to win, than I'd advice you to browse for some topics on tournament armylists).

Hey guys,

Thank  you very much for your feedback, it's great to join what seems like an awesome community. Seeing some of the painting and conversions here really inspires me.

I have pretty much finished my first bull, which i've done to test the colour scheme. Will post the pic in a day or two.  Am also trying to finish a unit of warriors for my tyranid army. So i can finally focus on my Ogres.

About the skin, it would look alot different on the Ogres, but because of the facial expressions, they're not as evil looking as the thrister and as Belchfist said, theres not really much to break up the upper half.
I'm sure it'll look good though, be sure to get those pics up soon!

About the list, as BigD said, it depends if you want any form of competativeness.
If you're in it for the models and painting, just get what you like the look of.
If you want to win some games once in a while and be able to cut it up with the new armies then there are, IMO, a few things that need to be staple in your list.

Looking at what you've chose to buy, this is what I'd do;

Bruiser, you need him, upgrade him to a Tyrant in 2k or above.

Butcher, these are one of the best character choices in OK, but to have any sort of impact on the game you'll need 2 at least (some would say 3 at least)

3 Bulls with bellower, yep good choice with the bellower, these are best armed with Extra hand weapons or with no upgrades at all.

Ironguts, it seems that you have 12, my advice would be to arrange them into units of 3, 4 maximum, although I'd stay with 3.

Belchers, suck. Although I'm paiting up 8 of them, so who am I to say that ;)
Units of 2 is the best way to field them and they can be fun or sometimes even useful.

Yhettees are awesomeness, 3 is the best number as you've done.

Maneaters, these guys are expensive! those 4 are gonna set you back 360 points.
In less than 3K I find them a bit too costly, if you're gonna run them though 2 units of 2 would be a lot better than 1x4
I love the models too, they're the best in the range without a doubt which is why I include them when I can.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks for the input Fantasyfreak.  You've kind of echoed what i was thinking, so it's great to know.  The Army is by no means concrete, and there are a few things i would take depending on the points, i.e Tyrant.

Interesting that you say 2 butchers, i thought i had maybe one would be enough, but i do really like the sound of them, so would be happy to take 2.  I love the maneaters, but might be forced to drop them in certain games by the sound of it. Oh well.  Am increasingly liking the sound of a Hunter for taking out warmachines also. This of course, all depends on points/who i am playing.

Should be playing some smaller games with them in a couple of weeks.

Hi guys,

So this is the test model i have done so see what my colour scheme looks like. I'm quite pleased with it. I think i might lighten the skin tone a little bit. Obviously nothing else is painted on the model, just basecoat but just so you guys can see how the skin tone has come out.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Cheers, Rik

Great skin tone! I wish I had the energy needed for all those highlights... ;)

By the way, I'm liking the avatar, but I'd remove it if I was you. Some people get offended by stuff like that.
Every man dies. Not every man truly lives.

Really well done Rik, I'm also wondering what colours you used, the shading is a really nice purply tone, but I can't place it.

I think it'll be a really good looking army if you keep to that standard of painting, I'm interested to see the rest of the colour scheme for the Bull :)

Keep it coming.

The skin is a basecoat of Hormagaunt Purple with Tanned Flesh added, then Astronomican Grey then white.  All in one mixed up mess.  There are roughly 8 shades of colour, quite a tricky mix.  A similar effect could be achieved with normal flesh tones followed by a purple wash then re-highlighting with really light colours.  The most complicated part is keeping it light whilst keeping the depth of the shading.

Sorry i haven't posted anything for a few days, i've been doing my nids. Some forge world ripper swarms to be precise.

I like the purple skin, it's different but I like it.  I have to say I think I preferred it before you went back over it, I felt like it blended better.  Either way though it looks great and is painted great!
Hey, thanks for the feedback.

Yeah i agree it doesnt look as good in the second picture, but future models will look better.  Because i was trying to lighten existing paint it lost some of the blended detail.  Whereas now i know i'm having it slightly lighter, so i will paint that way from the begining.  As i said, this was a test model  :)

The skin of the test-model looks great! What other colors do you want to use (for the iron bits, the trousers etc? I think some dark colors would contrast nicely.

Hi guys,

Sorry it's been a while in posting, despite trying to force myself to paint one thing at a time and actually make some progress, i'm back to my old tricks and have started a dwarf army, as well as the Ogre's i've just started and the tyranids i'm also painting.  Doh! Come to think of it, I might start a Gnoblong for the dwarfs i'm painting.

Anyway, i have pretty much finished the first three bulls, so you can see what the colour scheme looks like (sorry the picture is crap, i'll post better ones at a later date. I went with pretty dark clothes/etc, as the bulls have alot of exposed, fairly brightly coloured skin.  I have almost finished a unit of ironguts, so they should be up soon as well.  Whilst the whole army is going to look fairly dark and [hopefully] imposing, I plan on introducing a bit of colour in the army through the Gnoblars and Maneaters.  I'm also in the process of converting a Butcher, 3 Yhetees, and a tyrant.

Interesting. With the colors you have chosen they have a very unique look from most of the OK tribes we see round these parts. Sort of reminds me of VC or DE .. that kind of "Gothic" darker look.

Looking good.

Are you planning to use conversions to enforce the dark atmosphere you achieved with the colorscheme? I think big crude weapons and lots of armour and bodyparts of the enemy would suit the moody purple and black of the models.

Hi guys,

Well i've been extremely busy since my last post, painting ogres, dwarfs, nids, sisters of battle, so many models, so little time.  I do intend on starting a gnoblog for my other armies, but just to update on my ogres.  I've painted some ironguts now, and am really looking forward to painting some maneaters, gnoblars and characters, to introduce some colour into the army.

Anyway, here's some ironguts for you to check out.  I've been working on some background fluff to my army, which i'll be posting soon.

Cheers, Rik

I think a darker stone color, more obsidian perhaps, would offset the other colors on the Ironguts. They look very bright in contrast to the Bulls you showed us before, most likely due to the increase in metal armor and bright bronze.

Hi BiD,

I actually addressed this issue in previous gnoblog posts.  They aren't the same colour, and this is much more apparent when you see the models in person (not in my crappy photos).  The gnoblars are blue, whereas the ogres are purple.

I tried loads of different colours for the gnoblars, and whilst some looked ok, they really ruined the overall look of the army.

Comments much appreciated though  :D

I don't like looking at your gnoblog, it makes me sad- stop painting so damn beautifully.
There are a couple problems I have with them though. One, everything is very monotonous (the bulls all look essentially the same, and the gnoblars look like one lump of grey/purple and silver), if very well done. And two, the metal (or more specifically, the bronze), is very flat and boring. It looks like just a base coat.

Hi Reg,

Thanks for the feedback, i definately see your point.  I think what i'm going to do is once they are all painted (very soon) i'm going to do the rocks and snow on the bases, and then go along each model and add little touches to each one.  Tatoos, wounds, etc.

I think once the bases and tattoos are done they should stand out a little more.  I'll bear your points in mind when i'm doing them.

Nice one... my only comment about the gnoblars would be that the metal looks very clean, it suits the look but i'm sure gnoblars wouldn't keep it or find it that way

Have you thought about making then Gnoblar's skin tone different than the ogres?  Nothing wrong with it, I'm just not used to it.
