The Fae Folk - an army of Forest Spirits

original thread ↗

So, another day another Project! I was hoping to get my Secrets of the Third Reich stuff finished before even starting another project but as of 13.08 yesterday the clock on this is now ticking. At that time I ordered my ticket for Heat 1 of the UK WFB GT, and having sold off my ogres, and refusing to add anything to my warriors of chaos army until the actual book comes out, I’m in need of 2000 points of WFB to send marauding around the field of the GT.

I’ve decided to run with an all forest spirit wood elf army. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while as I really like a lot of the models, and the wood elf tactics are such a divergence from other WFB armies there should be a new challenge. Of course it’s unlikely I’ll be able to get any practice games in before the GT so will have to hope that I can remember how all those forest spirit armies that kicked my ogres collective heads in over the years went about it!

First up is the Dryad I painted as test model for the army. It uses a micro-art studios resin base (plus various clump foliages) and plenty of citadel washes. You may have seen the dryad elsewhere on the forum as I tried to ascertain whether I liked the result or not, but now I’m happy to press ahead.

Last night I assembled 4 treekin who are going to get similar treatment this week. I’ve also got 3 units of 8 dryads, drycha and 2 converted branchwraiths, 2 treemen and 6 wildriders waiting to be built and painted.

The treemen are going to be built from the plastic GW trees with copious amounts of greenstuff thrown in for good measure, and the wildriders are going to be centaurs as I think it’s a little more in keeping with the forest spirt/fae-folk aesthetic than some drugged up elves ;)

The GT is on the 4th-5th October and so far I have 1 model for the army painted. Time to get going :D

Thanks
Corai

I'm looking forward to seeing the Treemen :)

I think you'll get this done in time no problem, in fact the way you paint I think you could get it done by the end of July ;)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Strangely enough I just finished watching the movie Prince Caspian before this and have also been inspired to work on a forest army.  I may have to base it on the minotaurs however as they did prove somewhat heroic in the movie, but unfortunately the current models aren't too great.

I love the dryad and I am happy to see only good results coming from the washes so far as I've recently bought the whole set.  Really looking forward to seeing this unfold, keep up the great work!

LoK
Thanks for the encouragement guys :D

Last night I put together 7 more dryads to accompany the test model and began work on my first branchwraith. Since, AFAIK, there is no branchwraith model (except Drycha, who has to play herself in my army) I was torn between how to represent them modelwise. I wasn't sure whether to try converting up just a bigger, badder looking Dryad to stress the hero/combat element of the character, or have them raised off the base mimicking one of the woodelf mage models to drive home the wizard role they play in the force.

In the end I went for a conversion to try and show the model in the middle of casting the treesinging spell. It uses one of the resin bases but has a branch from the plastic trees bursting fromt the centre. The dryad has been cut down to merge into the branch as it moves forward. I just need to add some procreate the blend the joins together and make it look more like the branch and the model are one thing. Pics tonight when I've finished the sculpting.

Thanks
Corai

The model looks great, but perhaps it would look even more awesome if you added a little more (brighter) highlight  (just on the thin lines). for instance on the upper lip, over the eyes and on the fingertips.

Keep up the great work.
Never trust an unpainted model!

The dryad pic looks very nice. The base, coupled with the natural tones and the washes gives it a very nature-like appearance. But I agree with Thorgrizzly. Perhaps by adding more exaggerated highlights at the face, you could make the model even better than it is already.

AS promised, some WIP pics of the branchwraith (and a second one I started tonight). The GS still needs a little smothing (and eventually some sanding) when it dries and the pics aren't the best (but hey are only WIP shots, of course).

Imagine them with some clump soliage on the tips of the branches they are emerginf from

Do you think they look suitably characterish to pass for branchwraiths and not jut bog standard dryads?

I've been reconsidering the centaur idea. I still think centaurs fit the idea of fae-forest-folk but I'm not sure they'll gel aesthetically with the rest of the army of walking trees. I've not totally scrapped the idea but have come up with an alternative I could use your opinions on:

I'm going to try for having a horse literally emerging from some tree branches (in the same way as the 2nd Branchwraith above) with the limbs turning into branches as they reach the treeline. The aim is to go for a sort of horselike apparition emerging from the edge of the forest. I'll convert some dryads to be riding side saddle (they are ladies after all ;)) and also fading into the forest in the same way. Do you think this sounds like it could work?

Thanks

It sounds a bit tricky, but I am sure you can pull it off if you wanted to. It might look cool if the horse was rearing up, but that would kill the sidesaddle idea.

By the way you describe the "tree-horse" idea, do you mean in a similar way to the water horses in LOTR? But instead of water, you'll be using trees? :) If so, that is an excellent idea! And much better suited, aesthetically, to the army :)

The branchwraiths look great, those are some very dynamic poses. I'm not sure if they're "branchwraith-ish" enough, because I've never played with or against wood elves and I have no idea how they are different from dryads, so can't help you with that.  :)

About your alternative to centaurs, it could work.

I've had a productive couple of days. First off I knocked up a test conversion for the tree-wild-riders. I'm happy with the way the horse is emerging from the branch, but the side saddle sculpting of the dryad went a little (as Al would say) 'ka ka'. I've not got enough models to redo it, but needless to say, the other dryads wil be casting aside their lady-like etiquette and riding their horses like men! Alas I forgot to take a photo of the conversion when I had the camera set up so pics will have to wait until I've finished the whole unit.

I've also built and painted the first Dryad unit:

And painted the unit of trekin. For years I've been unimpressed with the treekin models (mostly as I stared across the table at them!) but upon assembling and painting them I'm really impressed with the qualiy and design of the sculpts. They're really dynamic, characterful anthropormorphic trees and I thourougly enjoyed painting them.

Finally every good wood elf army needs a wood, so I cut down one of the plastic GW wood bases to be no more than 6" in diameter and am painting 2 trees to go on it. I've had these trees built and undercoated since the day they were released but have only today felt the inspiration to actually paint them. I started with just one to see if the techniques employed on the dryads would cross over to the trees and am pretty happy with the result. I was never a fan of the plastic foliage which accompanies the trees and had built them with the intention of making a winter wood (as most of my armies at the time fought on winter bases) but tried experimenting with using the clump foliage I've been using as basing as actual foliage and again am pretty chuffed with the result.

I'm now working on building the rest of the wildriders and painting the converted branchwraiths

Thanks
Corai

All those models in a couple of days completed to that standard is incomprehensible(sp?) to me.

Seems that you might be on target for that end of July finish

Time for a small, photo-free, progress report. Last night I built the best part of the horses for the remaining 5 wildriders. All that remains is to add some more GS to blend the stumpy remains of the back legs into the branches they’re appearing from. I hope to get this done tonight and make a start (if not a finish ;)) on the remaining riders

Fantastic looking models! I'm eagerly awaiting pics of your wildriders :)

And about the branchwraiths subject - compared to the other dryads, I think that the first branchwraith looks too similar. She will be recognizable as a hero because of the unique pose and the branch on which she is standing, but she still looks a bit too much like the other dryads. Of course, that doesn't means that she doesn't looks awesome, but that wasn't the question ;)

Edit: forgot to mention that I'm loving the owl on the first BW :)
Every man dies. Not every man truly lives.

Time for a bit of an uncharacteristic WIP update. Instead of finishing of my wildriders this evening I started my first treeman instead. Full credit for the idea goes to Chrono at TWF who built an excellant plastic treeman. My plan had been to basically copy is design, but as I moved up the model it began differing more and more to the point where I'm reasonably happy with the uniqueness of my tree-guy so far. I still need to build up a canopy of branches over the abck of his shoulders, and of course there's lots of GS work needed on him to, but I ran into a bit of a stumbling block: I don't know what to do for a head. I've tried carving a thick branch to look somewhat face like but that didn't reall work. I'd also considered having a dryad pilot sit in the chest cavity, but didn't realll think this fit the imagery all that well. I may well just use one of the larger plastic way-stones from the woodelf sprues and htry for an eery glow from the swirls in the middle, but I am open to suggestions. What would you usefor a head?

Thanks
Corai

I think that the kind of a big, scary roaring head the treeman on the cover of the AB has would look great, however you would probably have to sculpt it from scratch...

Way too small unfortunatley. This guy's massive. That's a 50mm base he's on and the treekin models only come up to about his knee!

I got up early this morning and got another hour or so's work done on this guy before I had to head off to the office. He's now got a small 'thumb' branch on each 'hand' and I've begun cutting and filing away at a particular branch to give it an (albeit mouthless) almost-face-like appearence. I'll blu-tac it on and snap some pics when I get home tonight, but am still open to alternative head suggestions in the meantime!

Thanks

You could use the giant head with beard and convert it to look more tree-like (a beard of leaves, making his skin look wood-like etc). A question about the base, it looks a bit small for such a massive model. Why don't you use a bigger base?

Because, in games terms, the base he is using is the appropriate size for the type of model concerned :)

I tried the giant head out as a base but it's just a touch too big really and took away from the feeling of power I was trying to convey. and JJ was right, he's on the 50mm base so I can use him legally in games as a treeman/ancient.

I pushed on with the branch-head this evening, filing it down some more and adding eyes and brows to it from procreate. I'm pretty happy with the sizing of it and the brnahc flows into the canopy formed by the other brances. I'm considering adding a nose to the face though, what do you think?

At first I couldn't see the face, but then I spotted the eyebrows ... and now I'm a believer too.  I think it works as is, with some OSL eyes to make the head stand out a little more with painting.  Great build by the way, fantastically huge.

On a nose, I say no, none of the dryads or treekin have them and I think it takes away some of the alien-ness of the fae folk and replaces with the "oh it's a friendly tree person" that Treebeard has in that one movie about short chubby people.

- Salvage
A nose is not really neccesary in my opinion. A hole of some sort would suffice for a treeman. I do think the head is difficult to spot. I only saw it at the bottom picture.

BigD

I come back after several months away, and I find that you have done at least two armies that I haven't heard about. And I'm glad you have, as so far this forest spirit list looks amazing (I've always liked the theme). The main thing that has leaped out at me so far is the fact that your treekin and treeman both actually look like trees, which is as they should. The main image of forest spirits at war that comes to my mind, is the forest coming to life around the enemy, often just as one of the hapless foe raises an axe to take a chunk out of tree that seemed a lot less lively a few minutes before.

Preamble aside, this image is very much reinforced by those models. To continue it further with the treeman, I would also go along with the suggestions not to humanise the treeman's features. As others have said, treemen are not kindy old men of the forest. Treemen are like the meanest, grumpiest pensioners in existence with their own, particularly violent way of saying "Hey you kids, get off my lawn!". However, I might suggest making the eyes larger and the brow slightly more prominent as these features aren't easily noticeable.

Another suggestion is to be very liberal with lichen, overhanging foliage and creepers. My reasoning is that, as the treemen are the most venerable and inactive of the tree spirits, these things would have more chance to grow and develop. As a potential comedy angle, you could even fashion nests that animals have built in the treeman's branches not knowing the nature of their chosen living place.

Hope this helps,

Ghworg

As for the treeman, I pushed ahead with painting it this weekend. There are a few things I learnt on this mini about using the same washing technique as the smaller models which I'll know to avoid next time (there's still another treeman to be built and painted for the force, afterall!).

I also managed to find some time in between waiting for washes to dry on the treeman, to paint up one of the branchwraith conversions. The photos of this aren't the best but I'm really pleased with it IRL

Thanks
Corai

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Good stuff Corai, the Treeman looks even better now that he's painted, a truely awesome unique model, well done!

If JJ hadn't of given you a pet I would've.

Treeman is excellent. Two of that quality on the board are going to seriously intimidate your opponent. Not only are they solid troops, but these are going to tower over the opposition, looking nice the whole time.

The Branchwraith is excellent. That dynamic pose you chose was highlighted by your painting. Ranking her up might be difficult but the trouble is worth putting something like that on the board and having your opponent goggle at it. I've disliked the fact that while GW has like 5 Spellsinger/Spellweaver models they don't have Branchwraiths other than Drycha. Your model fits the bill perfectly.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys :D

Over the last 2 nights I've managed to finish off another unit for the army, this time it's the Wildriders. I was planning to use centaur conversions originally (as I didn't want to include any elves in the army, whether they possessed the forest spirit rule or not ;)) but decided this still wasn't going to realy look right in an army where every other model is a tree! With that in mind I've converted some horse riding dryads which are supposed to look as though the trees are part of the forest themselves, bursting forth from the underbrush. I'll let you decide how successful you think it's been:

Thanks
Corai

I've seen plenty of Dryad cenataurs, but never Dryads riding messed up forest spirit horsey things.
A job well done I think!
Those things look like they would actually cause fear on the charge, as opposed to the Elves on steeds.

Edit; I just looked at the date, you're two days over and still not finished, I'm dissapointed...... :(

Very nicely done. The tree-horse blend is not overstated (unless you get the right angles), but with the colors indluded it works *very* well. Excellent job Corai. I expect a best army or two award in your future.

In my defence, I was never going to be able to finish the army in this time as I'm waiting on 8 more 25mm square bases for the final unit of dryads as my supplier had run out of stock. Would have been nice to get the other units finished by the end of july though.

Oh well, let's see if I can get it done by the end of August (or maybe even half way through so the army in it's entirety will have taken only a month ;))

Thanks

That would still be ultra fast, especially for an army of this standard! :D
Don't rush it though, I'd rather see a decline in speed than quality ;)

I don´t like the dryad models myself much, but those on the "forest-spirited" horses look damn good!

The wildriders are skillfull conversions (how they come out of the trees is very nicely done) with a great paintjob. But somehow, it doesn't look right. The horses are very smooth and graceful. It doesn't really match with the dryads riding the horses.

Still little in the way of actual progress. I've started to paint the dragon but it's in the very early stages so there's not much to show at present. I'd hope to have this finished at some point this week, but with a 7 day work schedule (covering for someone off sick) and spending the rest of my free time at the hosptial, it could be into next Tuesday/Wednesday before there's anything really picture worthy.

On the 5K front, I've decided to plow ahead with it and try and get it all built and painted in the next few months. I've decided to drop one of the branchwraiths from the list (keeping the drycha mini just to use as the lady herself for smaller games) in favour of a noble BSB with the banner of making the unit unbreakabe for a turn. He'll go in the eternal guard making themstubborn Ld 9 with a standard, a BSB and the ability to become unbreakable for one turn a game. They should work as a decent tar pit/anvil unit pinning someone in place for my treekin/treemen to flank into oblivion

Thanks
Corai

Forum Primer: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=7241.0
Personally i think that getting a character into the eternal guard is the better option so nice choice... not sure about the magic banner as people will tend to try to assassinate him to remove stubborn from the unit he might benefit more from some protection however useful a turn of unbreakable might be
Also... eternal guard are best deployed about 7-wide so having the unit take the small bump to 21 models works out fantastically

Can't wait to see your take on the alter noble too

I'd thought 7 wide was the way to go, but wasn't sure about the width of the unit in an army of 6 wide cavalry, 10 wide infantry and 4 wide monsters. I used to have trouble fitting all my ogres into a working battleline due to the width of number of units, but I suppose on a 5K board, it shouldn't be too much of an option.

I'f I'm running them 7 wide, would it be worth springing for another 6 of them (potentially dropping the 2nd gladeguard unit to pay for, plus some extra magic items) to run 4 ranks 7 and really increase their tarpit potential?

Thanks

Update time at last. It seems like it's been ages since I got anything finished for this army!

First up this week I finally finished my multi purpose spite game counters. The optimistic part of me thinks that I'll be using these to mark deployment zones, which units have activated or units with a remains in play spell on them. The more cynical, and all together larger part, assumes they will be reserved merely for wound counters on my multitude of multi wound units (treemen, dragons, treekin, drycha, characters etc)

They're nothing fancy really and were done in pretty much of a hurry in between other projects drying, but I'm till pretty pelased with the results for game counters:

But the main thing I've managed to paint over the course of the last few evenings (7 day working weeks just suck the time right out of a hobby!)is the highborn on dragon:

The pics aren't the clearest, but unfortunatley my lightbox is a little on the small side for photographing the beast. That coupled with my continuing crippling inability to photograph dragons of any variety has produced the poor photos above. IRL, I'm really quite pleased with it!

With a couple of days off finally coming up, and my order of more bases stil waiting to arrive, I'm finally going to get stuck into those objective markers and movement trays

Thanks
Corai

I've talked wood dragon builds out with my friends before and we came to the conclusion (same as The Internets I think) that the best you can do is the shooty high born on dragon.  Dragon terror bombs behind the lines as the lord snipes people / blasts cavalry (honestly I'm not sure what the kit is, but it's pretty standard pattern stuff), eventually swooping in for a rear charge on somebody tasty - cause it's a dragon after all

Your build is pretty nifty, does its best to bring the combat hurt, as far as woodies are able to.  Annoyance extends to the mount too then?  Wow is that irritating!

- Salvage
I'd originalyl worked up a dragon build using the machine gun highborn (it's the bow of loren and arcane bodkins which give him 4 shots ignoriog armour saves) but was advised the highborn should be concentrating on combat instead!

I have to admit, I like the sound of the shooty dragon rider, but in hindsight, you could do the thing a whole lot cheaper with a great eagle and a blight of terrors than a dragon, so I switched it out for a more combat driven role

I've not got any actual new models painted for the army this week as I'm still waiting on some more resin bases to finish off some eternal guard, glade riders, scouts and warhawk riders.

In the meantime, I took the chance to finish off some of the gaming aids I've had on my it of pending projects for the army.

First up I finally got in gear and finished the movement trays for the 3 'ranked' units in the army. I'm really pleased with how these turned out, as I was a bit dubious during the converting/sculpting stage. In the end though, I think they fit in with the resin bases well enough.

Secondly I took the plunge and made my objective markers for the GT. I've written a little fluff obout them to explain what they are!

The Weeping Oak
Long, long ago, a pact was made between the men of Bretonnia and the Elves of the forest. Each would come to the others aid in times in need, but respect the borders of heir neighbours in times of peace. A great tree sprung up on the edge of the great forest, and the Tree became known as the border between the two peoples. Every child in the Kingdom knew never to cross the great 'border tree' and those few who did were never seen again. For man years a peace existed, until one fateful winter, when the Fat Duke, who ruled the town nearest the Border Tree, complaining of being too cold, set off with his woodsmen to the forest. Many ancient trees were hewed by their axes to warm the Fat Duke's Castle. Worst of all, the Fat Duke himself delivered the blow that felled the Border Tree, largest of all the Oaks. The spirit within the tree cried out in pain and put a curse on the Fat Duke. As the spirit was forced from it's slumber it decreed that the thing the Duke Cherished most would be lost to the forest. Sure enough, the very next morning, the Duke awoke to find his daughter, who was fairest in all the land and bethrothed to the charming Prince of all Bretonnia, missing. In the night she had been drawn into the forest. Unable to resist the calls she heard. They say, as she reached the border tree, the great oak opened up and swallowed the daughter whole! Now, Parents still warn their children of the tree on the edge of the forest. For they say a girl lives trapped within it, and when the wind is right, you can hear her crying for her lost love. Nobody approaches the Weeping Oak

This was a plastic GW tree stump (left over from the treemen) filled with GS. The face of the girl comes from the gladeguard sprue, the rest of the body, as wel as the vines and elaves were sculpted

The Phantom Shell
Throughout it's ancient history, not all of Athel Loren's native spirits have agreed on the way to best preserve the mighty forest. In times past there have been uprisings, most notably that lead by the Ancient Coeddil who hoped to expell the asrai. Most of these dissidents are simply exiled to the wildwood, doomed to stay out of Athel Loren proper. But there are those Spites so full of malice, they cannot be trusted to remain in exile. It is within the phantom shell, that these spirits are banished. On the edge of the Wildwood stands a blasted stump. Once it was a mighty tree, laid low by a bolt of lightning untold millenia ago. Within this dead husk dwell the most resentful, and dangerous spirits within Athel Loren, struggling to break free.

Finally this week, I tried to get a better close up pic of my dragon rider but most of them came out pretty rubbish. This is the best one I got, and that's not saying much!

Thanks
Corai

The first objective marker (the weeping oak) is also a winner with me - nice sculpting work!

For the phantom shell, I'd pictured from your written description (which I saw without the pics earlier) a more spooky/deader tree than you've done.  I guess in my mind's eye it was blacker and more rotten a tree - not that its not good (it is) - its just not what I thought it would be if you know what I mean.

Man, those treemen are massive! They compete, if not overtake the dragon in sheer size. Great looking army, but I agree the photo doesn't show it off that well- unlike your previous armies this one's colors are more muted and blend together (unlike say, the Warmachine army), at least at a distance like this. Or is that just the photo?

The group shot is a bit too blurry to do your greatly painted army justice. I like the objective markers, by the way. The sprites makes the models really characterful.

not much of an update, but as I've got most of the bases I need now, I've started work on the warhawk riders. The first one is ready to paint and I'll try and get a pic up pre-undercoating. It follows the same theme as the other ridden beasts in the army and has the hawk bursting out of branches with the legs and tail merging into the tree. The hawk will, of course, be painted green in the same manner as the horses and dragon ;)

Thanks

I've got a 2nd warhawk rider together, but run out of plastic trees so the third will have to wait until Tuesday when I can get to GW to buy (another!!) citadel tree set. I've also asembled a spellsinger (very minor conversion as the stock model is so ridiculously well sculpted!) and am working on an alter noble conversion. A particularly nasty accident involving my thumb (more precisely the skin beneath my thumb nail) a blunt drill bit, and a lot of swearing has halted work on that for this evening.

Hopefully some finshed wip shots tomorrow as I'd realy like to get at least the warhawks and spellsinger painted for this thursday to try them out in a 500 point game

Thanks

Blistering progress on the army... can't wait to see the warhawks completed

The army shot, whilst tricky to work out details on it does look great, blends in a bit but then, it should and the treemen and dragon really seem immense alongside everything else

Do they allow conversions for the Golden Daemon model competitions, or do they have to be strictly GW-models?  If they allow it, you should definitely enter that dragon.

So long as the conversion is like 75% (IIRC) GW models :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
AFAIK, Golden daemon is 100% GW or scratchbuilt. Not  massive isue for the dragon as the trees are also gW minis, but believe me, having seen GD entires up close, the dragon would be lucky to make the first cut against some of them! Thanks for the vote of confidence though :D

I've finished the spellsinger (which I'm happy with) and the alter noble (less happy, I'm not sure but I'm just not 100% on this guy). I'll get some pics tomorrow as it's a bit late now, and I'm tired!

Weather permitting I'd hope to be able to undercoat the warhawks tomorrow and see what kind of progress I can make with them

Thanks

Update time again!

Another week of 'asrai' painting has brought me one step closer to that 5K army goal. First up this week I painted a couple of new heroes to give me some more tactical flexibility.

A spellsinger - very simple conversion here as the model is so fantastic anyway, I just removed part ofthe 'base branch' and added a palstic one with some clump foliage to keep it consistent with the rest of the force

Next up I had a stab at converting the ubiquitous Alter Noble. I'm not sure I'm 100% about this guy. I might wind up scrapping it and having a stab a scratch sculpting one.

I've also finished off my first unit of warhawk riders. Ideally I'd like to add another unit somewhere along the way

Next week's goal is a unit of glade riders, some gladeguard scouts and a mounted spellsinger

Thanks
Corai

Love the work on the warhawks, the spellsinger has turned out nicely (an awesome base model to work from)... one thing the Alter Noble is definiteoly missing is a bow, i see a quiver but no bow, tut tut   Can't put my finger on it either really, maybe its the lack of branches rather than just a stump but i'm not sure its that either

the warhark riders are great - I really like the green hue on the hawks and the feather colours.  The poses are also really dynamic.

the spellsinger - you're right, the model doesn't need much doing to it other than tying it in with the force - and the paint job certainly does that :)

the alter noble - I think i know what's up - basically its too much elf not enough tree compared to the rest of the force - the blending with the trees isn't as flowing and naturaistic as the rest of the army....that's what's theowing it slightly off for me - although as a model by itself (out of the army context) I love it :)

Well i felt the wrath of these damned elves against my slayer army. Only a 500point fight, and most of the damage done by me  was with my hero, but bah.  They look so sweet IRL, although unfortunately, as corai say's, not quite high enough standard to be GD, but they'd certainly get bes tpainted armies at a heck of a lot of tournies and comps.

I'm also not as keen on the alternoble as the rest of the army. I'd give scratch building a go dan, i reckon you'd make it sweet.

I should be encountering these dastardly elves again this evening.  Death to the pointy eared wusses long live the stunties.

I'm afraid I agree with Rikazashi and Corai. Individually they're not Golden Demon quality (not far away though!). If there was an army category... :)

However, together they're absolutely one of the best armies I have ever seen and are really one of these few armies worth a 10/10. :D

"Needs Moar Manowar"
yep - Corai paints amazingly well, but think about it - he knocked out the dragon in like a week?  2 weeks??

Golden deamon winners are gennerally about getting a single model upto an amazingly high standard as a show piece only - the time and detail lavished on one is generally, at the least, probably a few months per piece.  Blends on the most perfect kind, perfect use of graduated washes, texture gradients too!

If Corai set his mind to it, I'm sure he could get one - but that's not the way he is at the moment - he's knocking out armies faster then most of us can count at a level that few people here could touch at the moment, and taking on project after project covering system after system.  Its totally inspiring to me, and I'm sure to others as well - but each model isn't to GD standard - but the armies - oh the armies....they're great! :)

I've been thinking about ways to do a second alter n9oble (alterhighborn realy for the 5K list) and I'll put some sketches up tomorrow.

On the gaming front I had another couple fo 500 point border patrol games this week. First up was a grudge match (see what I did there ;)) against Rikazashi's dwarves, this time ending with him well and truly massacring me (I think I managed to kill 3 dwarves all game!). To top it off, my wizard managed to miscast herself to (near) death and gave away yet more VPs! A worthy victory.

Next up I was up agaisnt some nasty looking orcs. unfortunatley for him, some unlucky animosity rolls early on, had him quickly surrounded by dryads and forsts (managed to actualy cast treesnging this time ;)). I killed his entire army for the losss of one dryad, ending with a VP score of 1200-0 in my favour (not bad for a 500 point game ;))

With the border patrol campaign now over at the club, I'm hoping to get some bigger Fantasy games in in the next few weeks and maybe even get some genuine practice for the GT :D

Thanks

I've not had much chance to work on the army this week (since finishing the hawks) due to some travelling, reunions, partying and gamesday! I have built up a small GG scout unit tonight though. Nothing much more fancy than the basic GG (except they don't need to rank up...yay!) but I hope to get them painted tomorrow.

If I can get to GW at all and pick up another (I think this makes 7) plastic tree set I'll have a stab at getting 5 Glade Riders and the great eagle done this week too. Might even make a start on some eternal guard at last

Thanks

You too, and that goes for all the guys at the stronghold meet up today ;)

aren't you getting sick of the plastic trees yet?...
Very much so! But I just want to finish off a few more units before I run out of steam and start something else! The new marines are released the weekend of the tourney so that means there will be 3 more drop pods and 3 thunderfire cannons on my desk, alongside the rhulic mercs, and the FW BFG tau fleet I just ordered, sitting on my painting desk waiting for attention!

By my reckoning, I've got 3 solid weeks before the GT, which will likely mark a break in my WE modelling. In that time I'd like to finish at least:
-6 scouts
-5 Glade riders
-great eagle
-20 eternal guard
-BSB
-mounted spellsinger

...it may be doable!

Thanks
Corai

I'm torn at the moment, I'm either going to acknowledge where they appropriated the etherdrive technology from and paint them in a nice Federation of planets grey with blue accents (and tau-ized NCC number plates ;)) or go down the farsight route and play up the potential for a necron contamination in his enclave by having the ships fade from Farsight red down to pure black, and have green lines (kind of like a circuit schematic) crossing over the black sections. Not sure if that will work though

Long time no update! I've not finished anything terribly exciting this week, just a couple more asrai core choices to add some diversity and flexibility to the army. First up, a unit of glade guard scouts:

These guys were supposed to look enough like gladeguard to fill in for extra GG when needed, but be distinct enough to be identifiable as a slightly differant unit. All of the models are meant to look like they're forming/emerging from the branches, something which is not evident in the GG unit. My initial intention was to use these interchangably as waywatchers of scouts, depending on my needs, but I don't think they look quite special enough to be WW somehow. I may try to convert some alternative WW's using the same basic idea, but having whole bodies forming from banches, like the branchwaraith conversion, and add some extra GS details to make the more distinct

Secondly this week I built and painted a quick unit of glade riders. I kept the emerging from trees theme that all ridden beasts have had in the army so far, but to make them distinguishable from the already painted wildriders, I made sure to have mostly asrai parts make up the riders, and kept them all with longbows.

Truth be told, I'm starting to run out of steam on this army, I'm hearing the siren song of other projects more and more each day (rhulic mercs and BFG tau espescialy) but I really want to at least build and paint everthing I've bought so far. With that in mind I'd like to have a stab att he following over the next 2 weeks
20 eternal guard + nobles BSB
mounted spelsinger/glamourweave
great eagel - now I'm not sure what to do with this one. I was originaly goinf to mount a spellweaver or noble on it for larger points games, but I already have plenty of character choices, I wonder if I'd be better just going with a straight rare choice eagle for smaller scale games. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Corai

Dear Corai,
After having a great vacation in Finland I came in touch with Warhammer. At that time I did not know what army to choose yet. I wanted elfs, that was for sure. After months of struggling I finally came to mind (thanks to my friend) that I wanted Wood Elves. He showed me your army, and my, am I impressed. Now if you dont mind I'd love to ask you some questions about the Wood Elves.
First of all, what should a basic army look like for wood elves? Do I HAVE to have dryads in it, or can I just use elves? What are some good customizing materials and what colors can I make? Basically how to start on making an army. Also making a story behind the army. I would love to write a tale about the Wood Elf hero (if one is required here of course). Is it normal to have such a background?
or is it just a great addition to your army? I am really into fantasy, and seeing your amry I fell in love with the wood elves. In real life I am a lover of nature, which also fits with wood elves at first sight. I really REALLY love your army. Do you perhaps also have pictures of your very first painted figures? I am very curious what your art processes were on painting.
