Ogre Kingdoms and Daemons of Chaos - A newbie's blog (WIP picture!!!)

original thread ↗

Hi, right, this is going to be the start of my Gnoblog.

I will aim to keep you all up to date with the progression of my Ogre Kingdoms army and my Daemons of Chaos army.

Firstly, I will aim to find names for both of my armies.
I have decided on 'Carnival of Chaos' for my Daemons of Chaos army, but any comments or criticism on this name would be much appreciated, as I am still unsure.

I have not yet thought of a name that would be well suited to my Ogre Kingdoms army, but I will aim to get thinking tonight and post a poll of names that I have thought of, up by tomorow.

My points total for the foreseeable future for my Ogre Kingdoms army is 2,500.
However, I am eventually hoping to boost this up to 8,000.
My points total for my Daemons, at the moment, is around 1,000 points.
And, I will hopefully get this up to around 8,000 aswell.

I have an army list for my Ogre Kingdoms army that I hope to have posted by the weekend, once I have come to a conclusion with the name.

Finally, you started a gnoblog :)

Well, all sounds good so far :) I eagerly await this proposed OK army list :) What points total is it gonna be aiming at?

Personally, I quite like the idea of the Carnival of Chaos for the Daemons, and you could even progress it from just a name, to a theme for the army, yet still incorporating Troops from any/all/some/none (delete as applicable :P ) of the Chaos Gods :)

As for the Tribe name for the Ogres, my personal suggestion would be The Goregut Tribe, or The Goretooth Tribe :D

Just a few ideas ;)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

@Just-josh: I had already decided to use the name of my Daemons army as the theme for my army.
So i plan on sticking to a 'circus of horror' theme throughout.
I have decided to incorporate all 4 of the troops of the Chaos gods in my army, although the main troop that i have decided to base my army on is Nurgle.

So, you're even planning on using Tzeentch? I thought you didn't like them :? lol!

I can't wait for you to post a few thoughts and ideas :) This sounds interesting, and I'd love to see where this one goes :)

Yes, i would like to feature Tzeentch in my army.
Although i am not very keen on the models themselves, i think that the idea behind them being magical could tie in greatly with the theme of the circus and magicians. I just have to find a way of portraying this and also using models that i like. Maybe this calls for some converting?

Ogrejess

Oh and im off to the circus tomorow for inspiration

Ogrejess

Excellent :D That should be a nice source of idea-flowing juiciness :D :D

As for the liking Tzeentch concepts, but hating the models, I think that with the right colour scheme, anyone would like them... And if not, then, yes, you could convert them ;)

Here is my 2,500pt army list for my Ogres. I won't put all of the points costs, just to stick to forum rules. The number in bold after each model/choice is the total for that model/choice.

hmmm...some interesting decisions you've made there - and your still 59 points short...

a hunter and NO units of trappers????

a unit of 4 leadbelchers that could be 2 units of 2

as for some of the others, well, I think we'd need to be in teh army discusiion thread to talk about this...
x105 - keeping pace with my wins!

Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)

Latest Fantasy Result: ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!

8th edition: 105/25/12
New ogres: 36/6/5

I was born and bred in a briar patch!
The four leadies being clumped together is a good idea in my opinion, as they are as unpredictable in 2's, as they are in 4's :) So, keep them like that if it suits you :D

No trappers isn't a big deal, as gnoblars are a waste of time, effort, money, points and adjectives in my humble opinion ;)

59 points isn't anything major :D

I personally, can't pick many faults, if any in the list ;) Not bad for a first attempt :D

Im pretty new to it all and not completely confident with what i am doing, but i have decided to stick with my first choices.
Im not too fused about having trappers in my army
What difference does 2 units of 2 leadbelchers, or 1 unit of 4 make?
All comments are appreciated!

In what ways do you suggest i complete or change it?

Ogrejess

... The juice is worth the squeeze!
The concept behind having two units of 2, is that they maximise the amount of damage they cause to the opponent, and minimise the damage they do to themselves, and each other. However, I have never found this to prove to be the case :|

You could maybe consider dropping the Leadbelchers, and taking another maneater or two :)

Just a suggestion :)

I personally like the army list - for a first try that's pretty darn good.

you have 60 points left - take the missing unit of Trappers to justify the presence of the Hunter - having skirmishers has proven INCREDIBLY useful for dealing with warmachines etc every time I've used them.

Drop the Cannibal Totem, it's not worth the points.

Also the idea of having two units of two leadbelchers is that you
A. minimise potential damage from unlucky rolls
B. If a target like a fanatic pops up you can target only two at him instead of wasting 4 shots
C. If one unit ends up in combat the other is still free to roam around!
D. I put them next to each other so you get all the benfits of one big unit and all those of the small as well...

hopefully I helped :)

Right, thanks for your help guys
I have decided to keep my unit of 4 leadbelchers, instead of 2 units of 2!

I have not yet decided what to do with my remaining 60 points, but i will let you know when i figure it out!

As for names for my Ogre Kingdoms army, i'm still open for ideas!

As for my 'Carnival of Chaos', the circus proved great for giving me alot of ideas and my Daemonette photographs shall be up as soon as possible! In the mean time, i shall try and get sketches of some sort up!

I've finished school now, so i have the whole summer to get alot of painting done!

Oh, well, if you are changing the leadbelcher configuration, then you need to change the points. It was 220 points for the four of them as a unit, but the two units are worth 110 points each...

Oh yes, thanks for pointing that out Just-josh

if a unit of four loses 1 model it has to take a panic test, causing 3 other leadbelchers to flee and possibly create panic behind your lines.

if 2 units of 2 loses 1 model, there is still another unit of 2 next to it ready to shoot, and a single ogre is only US3 - so it won't cause panic in anyone it runs thru while fleeing.

the rest of your list:

trade skullplucker for sword of "something". killing blow isn't that much of a bonus when a model has a S5 and armor piercing attack to begin with.
trade Bloodcleaver for sword of "something else" or a third scroll, or drop bloodcleaver & scroll for skullmantle & seigebreaker.

basically, if you are playing for fun and not building a tournament list, I would go with one scroll because scrolls are the most boring magic item there is, and skullmantle & seigebreaker butchers combine uniqueness, flavor and usefulness in a very ogre-ific way.
if you are building for tournaments... well, build your demon army faster than your ogres.

standards on bulls, eh? dangerous decision, since naked bulls are not great in combat and mostly end up getting beat up.... those standards are 100Vps for the enemy. I would be more inclined to play them safer and leave banners only on units that i plan to win combat with, like ironguts.

speaking of ironguts, you put a magic banner on both IG units. Only one can have a magic banner (check your army book), and you picked 2 not-very-good magic banners, also. Our best banner is warbanner. our second best banner is runemaw. other than those 2... well, canibal totem is too situational since not every other army has 40mm-based enemies. Bull standard is not worth it either because it's only function is to improve bull charge, which is a great threat but generally has little game effect.

your rares look like fun. since you are planning to go Circus-themed, find some of Commorant's posts. The Carnival of the Great Maw could provide some much-needed inspiration!

Thanks Sterling, you have been a great help.
I now understand the things that i have been struggling with.

This is my first warhammer army ever, so at the very moment, i plan on playing for fun but i hope that as i develop and gain greater understanding of it all, i can start tournamenting one day!

I will consider everything that you have said and update my army list tonight!

Thanks
Ogrejess

... The juice is worth the squeeze!
All of which Sterling has commented on, is purely down to personal taste though ;) And is situational, depending on whether you are playing to win, or playing to have a good game (win, lose or draw) :)

He is right about the magic standard on both ironguts units, and I would drop cannibal totem ;)

Standards on bulls is quite a risk, but one that may pay off, and if not, oh well! :)

Run the butchers as they are :) See how they fare, and if they die horrendously, at the hands of a Skaven clanrat, then you should reconsider ;) :P

Basically, just take other people's advice with a pinch huge sack of salt :D

Indeed - play all the lists you make and draw your own conclusions. That's the fun bit. You don't want boring buggers telling you how to win every damn game from the beginning otherwise the army doesn't feel like your own. Have fun :)

Hello, I'm back!

I should have photographs by this weekend of my Butcher :)
It is not very conventional and the base size has been commented on, but in my opinion, it's pretty damn cool!
haha

I should also have photos of my daemonnettes!
I was hoping to get myself some new paints this weekend, i made a list of the ones i wanted, but unfortunately i've been let down at work and i'm now lacking money!

So anyway, my photograps will be up soon, along with a poll for names for my Ogre tribe!

AND.. I have an army list for my 'Carnival of Chaos' now, and that will be on here tonight for all to see!

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Or how badly  :P that'd be great too because I'd have no idea how to help you :)

No seirously if it's themed who cares, it'll be fun anyway!

I'll look forward to those lists because I know only too much of slipping painting plans!

Hey Guys!
Long time no update, huh!

I havent updated in such a while, seeing as my pc broke down and the last week or so has been used trying to fix it. But, fingers crossed, its all sorted now so i can get back on track!

I have now got all the paints that i need to complete my models and i'm rather pleased with how my butcher and daemonettes have turned out :)

I made a trip to london to visit the oxford street Games Workshop on thursday and that was really cool!

I will have pictures up by sunday, i promise!

Hey All!
Havent been on here for a very long time!
Had computer trouble and it was taken away to be repaired for about a month :/

But anyway, i'm back now with W.I.P pictures of my butcher :)

Criticism is welcome :) It's one of my first models and very far from completion but i thought it would keep you interested in my gnoblog for the mean while!

Thanks

OJ

The butcher looks awesome! :)

As a first model, I think you've done an outstanding job :)

However.... A few points to make...

- The blood on the apron looks more like sand dust, than blood spray :|
- The eye patch looks a little flat, and slightly untidy
- And the blood spray looks only one colour, whereas I'd imagine the mix of fresh and dry, would need a few shades of red...

Just my two cents :)

Thanks JJ!

Well regarding the blood spray i do not think that the photograph did it any justice, friends of mine have infact said that it's one of thier favorite parts. But anyway i will try to take better photographs of it, closer up. Anywho, i used three different shades of paint for the spray on the apron, using a acrylic paint brush to spray it on!

As for the eye patch, i agree that it is rather flat :/
I shall work on that! Thank you!

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

Ogre achievements: 41/101
Very good for a first! and a W.I.P first it's awesome that would've been my finished model and the coulers would have gone everywhere. Great job!  :D

Cheers for all of your comments guys!
I should have some more photos of my butcher up friday night :) Completed hopefully!
And at a push, hopefully my female maneater too!

Anyway, here is a WIP picture of one of my daemonettes, simply to demonstrate the colour scheme that a decided to use. I wanted opinions on what you think of the colour scheme, if thats okay :)
I plan on doing alot of work on them tonight, so hopefully i will have a photograph of the unit very soon!
The photograph is very poor, as you can see, but i struggled to find decent lighting around the house and even in the garden!

Cheers!

It's cool :) Once again, the colour selection is awesome IMHO! :) However, the skin tone is looking a little flat :| But, overall, another awesome mini :)

nice looking ogre butcher and daemonette.

as for lighting its more about the surrounding background.

If you can find one get an A3 sheet of white paper (bigger if you can get one) - sometimes the back of a poster can work for this...

lay it so it covers the back wall and the floor of the area and place the model.  The point is to have a smooth white backdrop with no gaps if possible.

light this area from the sides/behind the camera with desklights (if that's what you have availiable and use the flash on the camera - also use the macro setting for the focus.

Hopefully, this'll help you with your pics.

ta,

p.s. Nice to meet you at gamesday :)
