Belchfist's Gnoblog of Randomness! - including Daemons of Chaos !

original thread ↗

Well ok, This is the beginning of a new gnoblog for me (my second) and it concerns those newest of things - the chaos daemons. I managed to get my hands on the spearhead box pretty soon and cheaper than usual (£98 on e-bay including delivery) and was very pleased with the contents. Having literally studied the rulebook for several several days, I can tell you that the fluff is fantastic in my own opinion and that it is very well made/written.

Through further e-bay purchase (and some helpful advice from fellow Stronghold members) I managed to pilfer myself 5 seekers of Slaanesh and today a second box of bloodletters arrived in the post, with the second box of daemonettes on the way.

For those of you that are interested - the army will not focus on any God in particular I wish to have the maximum choice, and am not fussed. If I had to choose one god it would be Slaanesh, but I am Undivided as such  :P The fluff I have already for my character Sedanus in a mortal horde ends with him becoming a daemon prince, though not good at all in game, I have converted a model for him in mortal and daemon form and thus he will be the fluffy army general even if he is not used ever!

I managed to build up the 10 daemonettes fairly quickly, with filing taking the most time (lots of small fiddly bits), along with the Masque. Then more recently I have built 5 bloodletters, the juggernaut and skulltaker.

After a bit of luck a friend GAVE ME 6 screamers that he can no longer use as part of his beastmen army. This puts my current models in my possession as:

Skulltaker
Epidemius
The Masque
20 Bloodletters
10 Daemonettes (10 more on the way)
5 Flesh Hounds
6 Screamers
5 Seekers of Slaanesh
1 Bloodcrusher
1 Beast of Nurgle
1 Fiend of Slaanesh.

Having been away for a week I managed to get in 4 small games with the same beastmen playing friend. The first game played was 500 points (not very many options for daemons!) And I fielded 2 units of 10 and a herald in each with items etc. I won convincingly even with the totally inferior number of models on the table. I was happy :)

We then played two 750 points games wich gave mem ore space to manoeuvre...I used Skulltaker and 4 screamers as extra and a bit of change on the magical item front, and in the second I used the Masque instead of a herald of Slaanesh. Skulltaker was INVALUABLE but his Movement rate of 4 sucks a bit. The screamers however, were incredible! And I decided to play a unit of 6 in the following game of 1000 points

This game also went well and saw a unit of 6 screamers, a bloodcrusher of khorne and a herald of tzeentch hit the field. The screamers accounted for half of my opponents army, (LITERALLY) and the herald of tzeentch accounted for most of the rest! I was impressed to say the least. I stumbled upon a fantastic set of items for that herald - a 25 point item that allows him to sly, and flames of tzeentch which allow him to shoot exactly like a flamer in the shooting phase (D6 strength 4 hits at BS 4) which was useful also.

The game ended with me having lost the bloodcrusher (which I sacrificed in a clever charge to hold up a full beast herd) and a single daemonette to the shooting from 2 surviving centigors.

I'd say a success!

I learnt a lot about the army and am very open to try new things. I think in a larger game a unit of plaguebearers will become invaluable as an anvil, while the other gods become your smaller hammers. The special and rares seem to be 'add to your choice' and I certainly will playtest all that I can!

I hope this has been an interesting read for all! I hope to have pics up as soon as something is painted! If anyone specifically wants to see a model unpainted for their own purposes please don't e afraid to ask and I will help out if I can! Await more soon :)

Sounds like your quickly mastering the tactics of the Daemons :D I love them, and think they are the easiest army to game with by far :D Even putting the list together is rather easy, and stress free :D I, so far, have dsigned lists for 2,000pts, 4,500pts and 12,000pts :D

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
I agree completely. I've played (properly) Lizardmen, Hordes of Chaos and Ogre Kingdoms - not one of them has been as easy to pick up as daemons. They're sort of a no brainer. Unit + herald, Unit + herald, Unit + herald then whatever the heck else you want for the flanks. Getting the movement right is ESSENTIAL though...

Yeah :D Movement is vital :D Seriously though, just for a bit of fun, try putting together a 12,000pt list :D Look back at the list once finished, and imagine trying to fight it  lol! I have 3,500pts at the moment, but my eventual goal is to reach the 12,000pt mark :D

Ok after REALLY stretching the things I have - plus using 20 of the just out of date daemonette models i can reach about 2700 points now...not bad considering I have no greater daemon!

Muahahaha! I made my 8,000 point undivided list! It's awesome...something for this gnoblog to aim for over the summer perhaps

Anyways - more developments: Screamers were so impressive when I fielded them that I've been incredibly enthused (despite an A-level exam this morning) to base them last night. This will be the basing technique for the whole army it goes as follows over a black undercoat:

Hormagaunt Purple drybrush
Dheneb Stone lighter drybrush
Water Effects - streams etc small puddles
Bestial Brown light drybrush only over parts that aren't in the rivers (obvs)
Dheneb Stone light drybrush over the same parts
Static Grass small tufts in random areas

I am very, very pleased with the result! And though more comples than my usual basing techniques, I'm certain the overall look on the whole army will be worth it, plus I've really enjoyed it  WIll get pics soon!

Screamers are amazing :P

This Gnoblog sounds great.
Lot of deamons and a big army.
Have fun with painting and keep the good work going.
cool freind. i love the demons, want to get some real soon

no steak? imminent ogre doom
I named him Schemer. He will do my bidding. Well, no he won't.

Time is something we comprehend in a very primal way - Wormed
Right - been at some painting last night and today in breaks of revision. Done about 80% of the Screamers. Blending tough colours is really fun! This is the scheme I use if anyone's interested, it is fairly similar to GW's but I like it a bit more:

Enchanted Blue undercoat
Enchanted Blue, Warlock Purple, Skull White (1:1:2) recesses/drybrush
Enchanted Blue, Skull White (4:1) drybrush
Enchanted Blue, Skull White (2:1) extreme highlights
Enchanted Blue, Skull White (3:1) blend highlights
Enchanted Blue blend highlights
Enchanted Blue, Warlock Purple, Skull White (1:4:2) extreme highlights
Enchanted Blue, Warlock Purple, Skull White (1:3:2) blend highlights

I haven't decided what colour the scales and horns should go yet - any ideas?

Also - I've noticed the Screamers seem to look better if mounted diagonally on the 40mm bases (in my opinion), diagonally meaning corner to corner if it is unclear. They can also rank up like this if needed to, as the slot in next to one another, when it is near impossible straight on on the bases...I don't see this having any advantages or disadvantes other than looking a bit better in my eyes - can anyone think of any reason I shouldn't do this :S?

The Screamers - I mean basing them like this:
 __
|,,,\,,,|
|_ \,,,|

instead of like this:
 ___
|,,|,,|
|_|_|       (commas are placed because space wouldn't work)

so instead of looking forwards, they look to the corners - don't know if that's a help!

In other news - I have now added a wash of waterd down Enchanted Blue to the resin on the bases of the Screamers and have started to paint the horns and scales black again for colouring!

Also I have axquired 9 Horrors from a friend for free, I have 6 Flamers on the way from e-bay and the second box of daemonettes arrived yesterday!

For your interest, I have made several army lists after a few games - I even have a 2,000 point list for each god. This is the 1,500 list I am currently aiming for:

Skulltaker                     150
The Masque of Slaanesh      90
Herald of Slaanesh               145      Level 1 Wizard, Torment Blade
20 Bloodletters of Khorne            270      Full Command
10 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch      120
The Changeling         60
20 Plaguebearers of Nurgle      180      Full Command
18 Daemonettes of Slaanesh      270      Full Command
Flesh Hounds of Khorne      175

This list is aimed purely at modelling - nothing else. I have most of these models and will be painting them up for this armylist. Comments appreciated. I do have other, more competetive armylists also - but this allows for all 4 gods and a bit of fun as well! However - even for fun i am worried that the block of 20 plaguebearers will die quickly without a herald - and also, I can easily swap Flesh Hounds for 6 Screamers (180 points) because the list comes up to 1486 in total anyway so we shall see...

Any comments?

1 English
1 Psychology exam done 2 exams to go...

Reading the daemons book again last night (when I should've been revising Psychology!!) I was totally inspired by Kairos Fateweaver...and also disappointed at the lack of model for him. I'm also quite inspired by the failry naff artwork for him in the book.

He is described as Tzeentch's most powerful Lord of Change, and after having spent an eternity in the Well of Change a 'shrivelled' and 'twisted' body came out. THis would make him oh so totally different to the other Lords of change ... and so my friend suggested "you're good with greenstuff just sculpt it" as a joke...and well...

And so I have come to plan a sketch of my possible scratchbuilt kairos...this should make it on to here today

lol thank you! It will be an ongoin project I believe, it will require a LOT of planning. After a few minutes considering it I don't thikn my greenstuffing skills are up to toally scratch building the model, but an extensive (very extensive) conversion of the Lord of Change should do it...

The sketch to be uploaded later tonight...still halfway through it atm.

Anyone know if two heads are given in the new Lord of Change box or just optional headdress? Can someone get back to me on that please? Thanks :)

Here is the intended part list:

lots of greenstuff and perhaps chain also.

Looks good, although more like a generic two-headed Lord of Change - not exactly 'shrivelled'.
*insert witty signature here*
Indeed - but considering that most people will be using a generic Lord of Change anyway, the slightest change should make a difference. And the change to the pose on that thing would be HUGE. I would literally have to cut up every single joint that I can see. Also the painting I believe would help, particularly light blue skin might be an idea, or even pallid flesh tones to show the 'plucked' aged nature of the daemon. The black eyes are a thought also....perhaps covering them with something to show he doesn't need them at all.

I do it like Lexy, and I find that there's no problem. My Screamers also come off if I lift them by the Screamers, but I just lift it by the base instead. :P

No artist? That sketch is awfully good! If only I could draw like that... :D

The quality of the sketch aside, I think the concept looks good but it wouldn't hurt to have it more shriveled (like said before). In my opinion the drawing of Kairos in the Daemon book captures this fairly well.

As for the eyes, perhaps you could paint them a milky white to represent his blindness?

A very interesting project. I wish you good luck. :D

@ Manowar: Thanks for the compliment. Also I've noticed that 5 of my 6 Screamers do stay on the bases, but the hole in the underbelly of the sixth is just, ridiculous and it's previous owner must have wrecked it

After thinkin more deeply  about all your comments on the possible fateweaver project i decided to take a broader perspective...and during my broader perspective I found myself staring totally at the Gulavhar model I converted into a daemon Prince when it firs came out.

Considering it's proportions, large wing span and totally hunched appearance...it seemed to totally make sense...
(if anyone hasn't got it - that I use that model for the basis of the 'twisted', 'shrivelled' form of Kairos)

The only major difference I've noticed is a tail, which would disappear with the sculpting of cloth because of it's angle. All in all I think it'd be perfect - HOWEVER there is an obvious problem...heads! What could possibly be used to represent birdheads on this fella that wont be way to big/small.

REALLY appreciate some advice here guys. Thanks for bearing with me while I still have no pics!

I don't know how big the model is, but great eagles might be able to give you some nice heads, and the left over bitz might be useful in further conversions (plus it'll probably be cheaper than buying a Lord of Change).

Not bearing with you is not an alternative - the pics will be awesome when you finally get them, and the inspiration and ideas I get from following projects like these are invaluable. :D

Gulavhar... It might work. I think it's a bit on the small side though, but that should be fine seeing as Fateweaver is supposed to be small and shriveled (which the Gulavhar model is). I don't know what you could use as heads. :?

If the hole isn't deep enough, how about taking a really thin drill and drilling out what's stuck in the hole? I've done it once (not for this purpose though), and it worked. You may want to give it a try.

@ Reg06: Thanks! I didn't think of great eagles! I'll do some looking into scale of those tonight.

A bit undersized in compariosn to a regular LoC, but would work  I have used him before as a daemon prince, back in my 40K Emperor's Children days

Indeed - I assume he is much smaller. I don't own a Lord of Change model so can't compare. However, placed next to Be'lakor, Gulavhar's actual body is slightly larger (height) than Be'lakor's though thinner, and his wings are huge, measuring in at about 10cm from tallest point to furthest back, which would make for an imposing verison of the shrivelled kairos, worthy of fourteen spells perhaps!

@ Manowar: I'm glad it's inspiring people! I'm thoroughly enjoying considering such a project and all it's possibilities myself, it's taking my mind off worse aspects of life at the moment! The total small size of the body of fateweaver using Gulhavar could easily be explained by his 'eternity' spent within the well of existence...hmm I think

On a small amount of progress note (exams take too much time, along with stupid ex's that lie)
6 out of 6 Screamers have had the scales and horns re-undercoated Chaos Black, and 4 out of 6 have had them all basecoated Graveyard Earth...they're really shaping up now!

On another note, 3 Flamers of Tzeentch arrived in the post a few days ago now. The unbuilt army is huge now  Damn exams...

I agree - but if you look back at (probably page two) with different heads it would fit the artwork a lot better than a standard greater daemon.

That's one thing I personally love about the Lord of the Rings range - the wings of the various monsters that possess them are not undersized and puny like in Warhammer. :D

Indeed! The Balrog's are HUUUUUUUGE!

Anyway - to tie mysefl to even more projects - i have always liked the Chaos Dwarfs...and wanted to see just how difficult it owuld be to make an army of the blighters...

Using the BFSP model presented with a WD a while ago I have finally plucked up the courage to convert him.
I am following (briefly) a method shown by a fellow known as Xander on the Chaos Dwarfs Online forum that can be found in very helpful tutorial format here: http://chaos-dwarfs.com/guides.php

I am happy with how it's proceeding...too happy perhaps. i hope to stumble across a particularly difficult bit soon or I might just be tempted to have a third army project on the go...and that's a slippery slope to Corai's kingdom of games!

The dwarf itself currently has no horns or arms, no emblem on the shield, no face and all it's chainmail covered with armour scales as shown in the tutorial...I'm now waiting for them to dry...and as I do that i will revise for my VERY LAST A-LEVEL EXAM THAT I HAVE TOMORROW!!!!!  :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

see you then  ;)

Well - I finished my A-Levels...and I don't want to talk about it...

On the plus side - I finished that Chaos Dwarf concept model, and I really really like it. Oh no.

Back to daemons. I have finally built the second rank of bloodletters so I know have built:
10 daemonettes
10 bloodletters
Skulltaker
The Masque
6 Screamers
Half a Bloodcrusher

The Screamers are coming up for nearly finished painting (seriously hoping for pics soon - I have to use a vid camera that can't tak epics so I have to do print screens and stuff)- and i'm having a full on warhammer day with my mate tommorrow with 1,000 point battles going on along with mega modelling and painting! I'll post up my 1,000 point army list later - and honour you with battle reports (and photos :):)) of tomorrows festvities!

Right - here it is, my 1,000 point army list for tomorrow's fun and games! The whole list is now totally built! (Built two ranks of bloodletters and a bloodcrusher in an hour  including filing etc)

I won't display points for obvious reasons.

Heroes
Skulltaker
Herald of Slaanesh (Battle Standard Bearer with Great Icon of Despair)
Core Units
15 Bloodletters of Khorne - Icon of Despair
10 Daemonettes of Slaanesh
10 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch
Special Units
3 Screamers of Tzeentch
3 Screamers of Tzeentch
Rare Units
1 Bloodcrusher of Khorne

I will likely be facing two large beast herds, centigors, trolls, lots of warhounds, chariots, and other trickeries...ambushing will be an interesting puzzle with such a compact force so I can solve it!
I might switch the Great Icon of Despair for the Herald being a Level 1 Wizard and some other trickeries...I might do this...

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Hia! been going for about an hour now and the 1 screamer's horns and scales have had a Kommando Khaki highlight...slow going  but it looks cool :)

I'll keep a note of what happens each game turn and even take pic at the end of each as well if I remember. Should be effective :)

Afternoon all!

Though it wasn't the most productive Warhammer day planned as my ex mrs reared her ugly head once more to cause even more mischief (after sleeping with my best mate  :x) - we got quite a bit done and squeezed in the game previously mentioned.

I was hoping to get pics of every turn...but with the heat of the battle and all ... I got one of the setup and that was it. I do have pics of all my models though  :P :P :P I still have his army list on paper so I'll tell you exactly what played!

Beasts of Chaos
Heroes
1 x Wargor - AHW
1 x Wargor - AHW - battle Standard Bearer w. Vitriolic Totem
1 x Wargor - Sword of Might
Core
Beast Herd - 12 Gors, 8 Ungors
Beast Herd - 12 Gors, 8 Ungors
Beast Herd - 5 Gors, 5 Ungors
Special
20 x Pestigors
5 x Centigors

My army list was similar to what I previously posted -

Heroes
Skulltaker
Herald of Slaanesh - Level 1 wizard
Core Units
15 Bloodletters of Khorne
10 Daemonettes of Slaanesh - Banner that gives them stubborn on first turn.
10 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch
Special Units
3 Screamers of Tzeentch
3 Screamers of Tzeentch
Rare Units
1 Bloodcrusher of Khorne

This was the setup (sorry about blurry or bad quality pics - taken from video):

If it is too blurry it was like this:
     Beast Herd    - Pestigors -    Beast herd - -  - - Centigors
                     w BSB          w General

Screamers - Daemonettes - Screamers - Horrors - Bloodcrusher - Bloodletters
            w herald                               w Skully

This left him a small Beast herd of 10 models plus a Wargor to ambush.

Riiight before posting model pics i will present to you all the report!

Beasts won the roll off for first turn and promptly took it!

Beasts Turn 1
The Centigors were the first to move, passing their drunkenness test on the roll of a two. They moved forwards about a third of the way down the table and more to my right flank. The Pestigors bumbled forwards their full movement flies following their rotting bodies everywhere, and the beast herd to it's right (far left of pic) shambled up next to it. Unfortunately - the Beast herd in the middle decided not to do anything  :?
Daemons Turn 1
Very aware that my opponent had absolutely no shooting at all and I did (for once!) I decided to play a clever game. Everything ambled forwards about 5-6 inches on the left flank, whilst on the right - the bloodcrusher made a beeline for his centigors (easily in charge range of them next turn). The Bloodletters meanwhile angled slightly to the left and came directly forwards their full 8 (Skulltaker is stupid) towards to non-moving Beast herd in the centre.
Magic Phase! Having rolled Acquiescense on the spell chart, I promptly made his Pestigors stupid much to his amusement! Then unleashed a horrifying 7 hits at strength...2 on his Pestigors from my horrors. which proceeded to all wound! (it was a turn of odd dice rolls)...My joy went sour as he saved EVERY SINGLE ONE on a a 5+! ...a fate is fickle.

Beasts Turn 2
AMBUSH! His smaller Beast Herd appeared on the table directly behind my daemonettes...in charge range for the rear next turn. He declared several charges - Pestigors into the Daemonettes AND the Beast herd to it's right to the same unit  and also the Centigors into the Bloodcrusher. However fear kicked in and the Pestigors stayed put as did the Centigors. His other Beast herd shambled forwards towards the big unit of Bloodletters.
Combat was short and ridiculous - 11 attacks from the daemonettes and 4 from the herald failed to HIT anything  with some abominably bad dice rolling...and he promptly continued to hack apart three daemonettes in return. Thanks to the banner I stayed put only losing a single daemonette to instability.
Daemons Turn 2
This is where the plan came togther for myself - all units had been positioned carefully for this purpose. The bloodcrusher rampaged into the Centigors, The Bloodletters charged the Beast Herd in the centre who failed their fear test, one unit of Screamers killed two Ungors in the newly arrived beast herd in the rear of my army (I only needed to kill 3 for panic...) and the other flew across the Pestigors killing three of them also.
In the magic phase thinks looked better again. The horrors let loose an array of sixes, casting Flickering Fire on the Pestigors on an 8, scoring 7 hits, at strength 7  :D Seven more Pestigors were removed from play...forcing a panic test which they passed due to their re-roll.
In the combat phase the Bloodcrusher mauled three centigors who did nothing in return and fled from the table. He overran 5 inches on three dice...which was useful! Skulltaker challenged and met the enemy general in combat, who promptly begged and was killed without mercy. The bloodletters proceeded to kill the Foe-Render to lower the units Leadership, and another three Gors. They lost combat significantly due to needing 6's to hit, fled and I overran (catching them) into the Pestigors who now had no real numbers to compete. The daemonettes MIRACULOUSLY failed to wound anything at all again, and were in serious trouble. Slaanesh came to watch them as they lost only two of their number and passed their leadership against the odds!

Beasts turn 3
With nothing much on the table for him to move - the newly arrived Beast Herd of now 8 models charged the rear of my engaged Daemonettes who weren't very pleased...
The daemonettes did a little better in his combat phase, killing 5 models in total from the small herd. He in return left the herald and the champion alive...who passed promptly popped  :(! In the centre of the table Skulltaker challenged and couldn't find a character in the fighting rank (flank) so proceeded to maul the unit. The whole unit was totally slaughtered by them due to an overrun on the last figure bringing them up near to the back of the large beast herd that had been assaulting my daemonettes.
Daemons turn 3
It was apparent that the game was coming to a close with nothing much of his army left alive. The bloodcrusher moved his full 14 towards the ongoing combat, and the bloodletters turned to face them for a charge next turn. The Screamer units both moved directly over BOTH remaining Beast Herds killing the smaller one completely including the Wargor, and taking out 3 Ungors and 5 Gors from the larger unit.
In the Magic phase the horrors unleashed flickering fire once more to kill 3 more gors. Everyone was positioned almost in a semi circle around his last unit awaiting his turn

Beasts turn 4
He decided to charge the horrors! promptly passed his unruly test and failed his fear test...to stay put in the middle of a circle of angry daemons who wanted revenge for them having killed the nicest looking female daemons around.
Daemons turn 4
Predictably short, the bloodletters charged in the rear, with the bloodcrusher in the flank. The annihilated the fighting tanks leaving only 7 models left, who promptly fled by their outnumbering, fear causing opponents straight into the screamers placed behind them...

game, set and match to the daemons of chaos!

it really is - my pc won't let me join the CDO forum for some reason so i can't thank him personally, but it was quite honestly the best one I've ever followed. My first ever proper greenstuffing went well because of that tutorial (and a casting tutorial found on Warseer for the mask).

In these pics it looks a tad untidy on some edges as well - which I'm unhappy with, but considering I've only ever collected Lizardmen, Chaos, Ogres and now daemons...I'm not used to these mini things! :)

Yes I'm back! And my Warhammer day was finally completed with my best friend :)

Some progress has been made! The things that have been built since last time are...
5 x Fleshhounds of Khorne
10 x Daemonettes
1 x WiP herald of Slaanesh!

The Fleshounds annoyed the nuts off me but they are done and need slight greenstuffing to be complete. I have elected to put a layer of paper over the huuuuuuge gaps in the bases because it would take too much greenstuff.

The Daemonettes have been completed and can now be used as two units of ten of any sized unit from 10-20. Useful stuff ;)

WiP Herald of Slaanesh
I got very irritated at not having enough models (i.e. two units of ten daemonettes on the table + the Masque...what can I use as a herald of SLaanesh!?!?!?) and so i decided to convert one! Not from a daemonette because that would leave me with 19 :( so I found a suitable old daemonette model...hacked off it's head and went from there...it has an icon of slaanesh and four arms that i wouldn't like to tangle with. Pics to follow soon...a bit more greenstuffing to make her more imposing...

I also fought 3 battles over the 2 day period. All against beastmen, at:
1250 points, 1500 points and 1500 points respectively. The 1500 points included a Lord for house rules. I did not lose a match! I have yet to lose a game with the daemons! I really like the tactics I can employ with te army and I'm not really fussed about not being able to bait and flee atc it doesn't bother me at all. Just painting to get on with now!

on a side note...I proxied a Bloodthirster and it ripped lots apart. However, it came into contact with Bestigors, killed 6 and the champion still had attacks back having passed the Terror test (obviously). The Gouge-Horn alone caused three wounds with the most spectacular rolling of the game! To hit: 6,6,6 To wound: 6,6,6, Armour Save needing 6+: 1,2,4 Ward save: 1,4,4. !!! It was unbelievable and the Bloodthirster LOST the combat by one losing only a single more wound to combat resolution! A lesson learned...

Nice game results. However, I don't understand what lesson you learned from being ripped apart by the Gouge-Horn (seeing as it was just good luck and no tactical mistakes). Beastman champions = bad news?

Was it the "attack the champion" lesson (this happens to everyone :P )?
"It's always darkest just before it goes pitch black."

Yeah the attack the champion lesson :(

I had a unit of Horrors in the front of them and the Bloodthirster charged the flank. Annoyingly he noticed his champion was on the corner from a previous challenge with a herald of tzeentch. I should have directed some of the units attacks against the champion and would have saved my bloodthirster 4 wounds, and 250 points of VP for him!!!

Right the Herald stand in!

I got very annoyed that I could not field both the Masque and the Herald at the same time with suitable models so I came up with a sort of 'quick fix'. This was the result. It took some time, and the ribbons flowing from the back also took some time.

It looks great (even the liquid looking stone gs work, but that works for a daemon's base), but can it rank up?

haha! Thanks Reg06! It does indeed rank up. no problems to the front as it's always in the front rank, and the back left side (where the stone protrudes) was filed down to raise it above the basing level of any models that may be behind it. Basically...it ranks up perfectly :)

Now all he/she needs is a suitable name...any ideas?

Looking awesome mate :D The stone on the base from the giant kit?

As for the skarbrand question, I dunno what in particular... I suppose it sucks that he can't fly, and that he lacks the abilities granted by taking gifts... But his twin axes are awesome :D

Proud member of: The Honourable Order of the Smiley!
oh my gosh, having checked the date of my previous post, it was near to a year ago! That shows what training to be an actor does to you! Well...it's wednesday tomorrow and I'm back on Sunday and I'm hoping to do some on Monday itself so the pics will be soon!

To give you an idea, the HoN is on foot, has a book in left hand if I remember rightly (as I normally make him a sorceror) a single large horn typical of nurgle, and a daemonic weapon of enviable size! Easily played as a two handed weapon (i know thats not an option - but it can then resemble all of the gifts he can have) it is a large staff with a daemonic fist coming out of either end. One is in a fist and rests on the floor behind him, the other grasps a decaying empire man who is being dangled in front of the herald.

The hands are obviously from the giant sprue! It sounds quite odd I guess...but it ranks up perfectly, fits with my concept sketches and looks cool!
Hope it's worth the wait and thanks for the comments guys!

Unfortunately today I have contracted the disease of being unable to type for no apparent reason! I will find the cure soon, but in the meantime please forgive my typos!

Right - after a few days of recovery...I have finally managed to take some pics! (well videos, then print screen as I do not own a camera!)

As a bit of a teaser, here is my Plaguebearer champion in all his gory glory. He is more extensively converted than the rest of the unit, as i wanted to be able to feasably field him as a herald whilst I was scratchbuilding my real herald! :)

enjoy! :)

So as not to be cruel to those waiting! I've managed to do the picture of the unit as a whole also! (ten complete models)

The standard bearer is minus a head (as I have not done it yet!) and there are still bits and bobs to tidy up and work on!

But remember my brief for these was a CHEAP unit of plaguebearers I could afford to make. It cost me the price of a box of ghouls and a thing of greenstuff only, and I've made a scratch-built herald out of that too! Do remember also that i was not trying to make the ghouls into the GW plaguebearers, I merely wanted cool plaguebearer models that fitted my own image of them ;)

I'm really pleased with the results, and think they'll look awesome painted! Comments and criticisms please :)

Thanks for all your comments so far guys!!! :D This is why i love the Stronghold, because you get to know people here, and you know they'll be honest with their opinions and not in a horrible way! Yeah I've been 'thespian-ing it up'   and it's kept me impossibly busy in London! Haha but I love coming home for a break here!

For those that are interested, the conversion of the ghouls is a fairly extensive one, despite being quite simple in execution.
What I do is I cut the stomach section away fromt he upper torso of the ghoul, and effectively turn the stomach around so the back faces the front. This sorts out a lot of the hunch problem, and also fits surprisingly well in the hip sockets of the models.
A large stomach is then padded out with a ball of greenstuff and sculpted in the basic shape, then the two pectoral muscles are sculpted on top of this in flabby fashion when the stomach is dry.
To add Nurgly goodness, I cut some stomachs open, added spewing guts, maggots, protruding ribs, piercing arrows, boils, diseased flesh and anything my warped imagination could think of!
I also made sure that every single plaguebearer had only one eye (or in case of the unit champion none) and a horn!
Many of you will recognise the Plagueswrods they are using...they are Ogre daggers!  :P  ;) I have cut and severed the edges to look more mouldy, but I never attatch them to my ogres so I thought the unit could be nice and uniformed with the same sword each without buying anything extra!
If anyone has any questions about any of the models please ask! :P

As always, any more comments or criticisms or suggestions are still VERY welcome!
I hope to basecoat them tomorrow, and amidst various bouts of research and reading, maybe start testing a colour scheme for them trying out the new washes I haven't touched! :):)

Fun fluff should be coming soon for Father Malady also :D

Here is the promised fluff for Father Malady, Nurgle's Debtor!!!!

It is meant as a page from the rulebook, which I will eventually fill with artwork and special rules to fit his fluff!
Tell me what you think please :)

FATHER MALADY, NURGLE’S DEBTOR
SOUL GATHERER, ETERNAL EXTRADITE, SUPPLIER OF SOULS

Father Malady is Nurgle’s chosen debtor, another of the seven Proctors of Pestilence and the supplier of the Lord of Decay’s most prized souls for testing his multifarious diseases. Father Malady’s task is an unending one, it continues for as long as Nurgle wishes to continue testing his favourite afflictions on the most deserving and susceptible soul-subjects. It is Malady’s task to seek out these subjects, test their mettle himself, and if found worthy; send them before Father Nurgle Himself.

Oddly, no daemon of Nurgle makes a sound when Father Malady is present; knowing that to distract him from his work is to attract his ire, which is as perilous to daemons as it is to mortals. He alone amongst the ranks of Plaguebearers possesses the power to destroy the soul of any being; be it mortal or daemon, with only a few words read from the tome of pestilence and the corrupting grasp of the living hands of his daemon-staff.

The silence that surrounds Father Malady on the field of battle is often more frightening to his opposition than the noise of war, instilling in those opposing him a primitive fear of something more dangerous than mere death. Indeed, when the first worthy soul is found and agonizingly tested with flesh eating bacteria, Nurgle’s Rot and thousands of other diseases, their screams of living death fill the hearts of their comrades with terror.

When Nurgle’s power is low, Malady is hardest at work, finding new souls for Father Nurgle to test his plagues upon so that his power will once again be great. And when Nurgle’s power waxes strong, Father Malady becomes all the more terrifying as he has time to play with his victims for his own personal gain - pick apart those souls not found worthy cell by cell, and increase his own impressive acollection of afflictions and disease so that he may also feel their pleasures.

The Gatherer of Souls is devout and determined in his task, and has never failed his master. It is perhaps an ambition to over-please Father Nurgle that spurs Malady on the most, for he does strive to find the best souls from the most courageous warriors for his master’s whims. But this is underlined by an alterior motive, for Malady hopes that one dayhe may become the head of the seven Proctors of Pestilence and the strongest of all the Heralds of Nurgle.

Those are some awesome daemons you have going there.  I'm sure your converting and sculpting of plaguebearer flesh will be a great inspiration to me when I'm ready to work on my Advocates of Virulence(whenever my order actually gets here).  I love how you've done the texture of your models.  I really like Father Malady's staff too.

I think you did a great job of achieving your goal with the fluff because it really seems like something that would appear in an armybook if Father Malady were appearing as a special character or something.  I can't wait to see the artwork and the rules should be interesting too.

Keep up the great work,

Poker

Awesome sauce. I like the plague bearers. They look more active and phystical than the GW. But they don't look as plagued.
The herald is pretty cool, but again, is very smooth. And it looks like he'll only be able to rank up against gnoblars or swarms.
I think it's the faces. They just aren't very daemonic (or at least not very plague bearery).

you're a sick man stone dog   excellent idea!
Thank you all for your comments!

@PokerFace: I will probably come up with two sets of rules for him - one that fits his fluff entirely, and one that fits in as best as it can, whilst being legal (i.e. daemonic gifts paid for in cost, just renamed to fit fluff!)

@Reg06 & StoneDog: Thanks for the comments! the humanesque daemons...
tThis is something I realise is personal choice, but when coming up with my original concept, focussed on quite a bit. A section of the plaguebearer fluff to do with Nurgle's Rot particularly interested me,
"These loathsome lesser daemons are crafted from the blighted soul-stuff of mortals who have been slain by Nurgle's Rot"
I loved the idea that those human infected with Nurgle's Rot were those that became the plaguebearers, and so decided to play on that a little more in the models.
Also, I understand the concern with ranking for the Herald, but everything i have tried ranking him up with so far (lizardmen, chaos mortals, Empire) have been fine! Even I thought he wouldn't rank up if I'm honest! :):)
The weapon is a matter of personal taste, i realise that some might not like the unwieldy size, but I thought it looked cool :P lol

Will sort out the rules tomorrw, and possibly scan the concept art in if I get the chance :)!

much love :p

One is a dragon - the idea is taken from a picture I saw on the internet of a similar dragon, which I loved and so I tried it out when i was bored!

The second is a take on a werewolf  - again idea taken from another picture seen online, but changed a little

In real life, they are shaded better, but due to my scanner I had to up the contrast slightly so you could see them at all!

I know it's random! But having mentioned my Nurgly art C&C would be nice :):)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
WOW

your conversion work is amazing!

i'm a fan.

you want to make an entire army scratchbuilt  8) or just some units and the heralds ?

When you will paint this figurine, i'm impatient to see that

Bullwaï
BEASTKILLER is my Bigname
Thanks Bullwai!

It's mainly my Nurgle stuff I intend to scratchbuild as the trest of thr stuff I seem to have already...and on the horror front...I wouldn't know where to start!
Life seems to be stalling my modelling progress as best as it can at the moment, with bandits cutting my car's fuel pipes, and many university tasks to be done!
I miss my greenstuff and paint brush :(:(

@JJ: I will of course get those done for you ;) I love the ideas i have in my head but they just need to refined and pinned down. I also need to get off my lazy bum and turn on the old computer downstairs which the scanner is attatched to so that I can finally complete the Father Malady page...

And also maybe show you a piece of artwork for the Mountaineater competition that i did really quickly...it shows three champions of slaanesh ready for battle! it's not great but it'll have to do i'm afraid! :)

Sorry for the lack of pics and fluff!

Thanks JJ!!! :D:D You joined at around the same time as me if I recall, and you are the same to me! although you manage to be FAR more active than myself and achieved tyrant status long ago ;) my thespian-ness holds me back in that respect!

Car is fixed but costly...

Can't wait to test out my Father Malady and a my Nurglicious stuff soon as well! You are right though - perhaps his point cost shouldn't be so high due to his lack of palanquin but that can be fixed after some playtesting! :)

I'm struggling on the herald of Tzeentch front...finding a strong character that would be a 'normal' herald...I have some ideas...but this is the one I am most struggling with! hmmm....thinking cap time!

Well, if I can give you a hand on concepts, you know where I am :)

I did join roughly the same time, didn't I? :) Yeah, I'm sometimes a little TOO active on here :/ 4th highest EVER posting member though :P

Dammit thespian! Where are my characters? MY scratch-buildingness is getting a little agitated

If you are still struggling for ideas, I'd be more than happy to give you my two cents :) Playtested Father Malady yet? :)

I'm glad you dug this from the ground! :)

I'm afraid I'm in London at the moment so progress on the model front is impossible for me, but I have had some interesting herald ideas indeed.

My friend let me down at the last minute as to the playtest game for Father Malady, so feel free to playtest him yourselves and feedback any suggestions...I think he is a character anyone would happily play against :)

I already have a slaaneshi herald model that I currently use and so fluff and rules for the character will definitely be based around her. She will have some form of area effect or base contact ability I imagine....that's just a teaser!

As for the Khornate herald...I'm aiming for something quite different to the already existing Skulltaker... quite possibly the idea of a daemon directly opposed to Skulltaker, that Skulltaker would like nothing more than to slay one on one but is forbidden from doing so. Khorne has other uses for this; the subtle slaughterer.

Any comments on the ideas?

The area effect herald sounds fantastic! :) Very slaaneshii :)

I'm not sure on the Subtle Slaughterer :) Sounds interesting, but I'll need a little more persuasion ;)

Ah, off gallavanting again are we?

Hope all is well :) I would love to play-test Father Malady, but my playing group seems to have drastically decreased in size recently, what with most of them swanning off to University, leaving me behind, after keeping myself back a year :(
