Big game hunters, who's the canadian using them??

original thread ↗

On the WPS site there was talk of a Canadian chap using 3 hunters, if he has any feed back let me know. Like to swap notes. Pretty close to what I've been running LOL.
  Here's the post.

(Ontario Canada)Time Of Madness
Saw a fellow playing this 2000pt ogre list down at my local club and thought it was pretty brilliant. Here's what the list looked like,

CHARACTERS

Tyrant
- heavy armour, Ironfist and luck gnoblar
- Sword of Striking (+1 to hit)
- Wydrstone necklace
- Daemon Killer scars (terror)
- Beastkiller
Hunter
- 2 Sabretusks
- Longstrider
- Biting Blade
Hunter
- 2 Sabretusks
- Longstrider
- Sword of Might

Hunter
- 2 Sabretusks
- Longstrider
- Sword of Battle

CORE

5 Ironguts
- Full command with lookout gnoblar
- Warbanner
*Tyrant here*

3 Ironguts

3 Ogre Bulls
- Bellower

3 Ogre Bulls
- Bellower

8 Trappers

8 Trappers

8 Trappers

RARE

Gorger

Gorger

TOTAL POINTS = 1996pts

All be it he was playing against a fairly light magic opponent (2 level 2's I believe) he was able to send his sabretusks out and kill the mages relatively quicky. The trappers caused some march blocking problems and even assisted the gorgers in removing a couple of war machines.

I was very impressed with the 3 hunters and the ability to cause problems for his opponent. I realize this list wouldn't work against some of the stronger tourney type lists, but I felt it was one of the more powerful ogre lists I have seen around.

Opinions on taking 3 hunters?

I'm not so sure about his Tyrant build but the rest looks good.

If you have a Magic Weapon your have to use it so Iron fist won't be useful on the Tyrant. Also beast killer doesn't work with Magic Weapons.

Tyrant build alternative
Tenderiser, HA, BOH, Wyrdstone Necklace with (Gut Maw or greedy Fist or Long strider) & Luck Gnoblar.

Yeah I saw that too Bob, good eye there,  the greedy fist is a bomb vs vamp lords, nuked a 3rd level vampire who was all of a sudden 0 level haha.
I think I'll have to wait for awhile for a response from Canada as they are mostly  asleep, as of 11pm Aussi time.  :)

Ironfist may not give you the parry bonus due to having the magic weapon, but it still acts as a shield in close combat.  Obviously useful.

Beastkiller may not give the extra wounds to big beasts due to having the magic weapon, but it still gives the character Immune to Psychology.  Obviously useful when run alone.

So I disagree with Bob....these add-ons CAN be useful in this scenario.
8th Edition OK Record
Crushing Victory: 6   Victory: 4    Draw: 1   Loss: 10  Crushing Loss: 3

7th Edition OK Record
Massacre: 3   Solid Victory: 4    Minor Victory:  3   Draw:  2   Minor Defeat:  2   Solid Defeat:  4   Massacred:  5
Ye with Beast Killer I was referring to the doubling of wounds, the Immune to Psychology is still useful. However with Demon Scars he is already Terror causing?? so why have both on the one Tyrant.

As far as the Iron Fist is concerned its 12pts to get a +1 AS whereas if you use Greedy Fist 20pts you get the +1 and also eat opponents Magic Weapons or Mage levels. I guess its personal preference on this one.

hit a vampire lord with a tenderizer and he tends to die - thereby losing all magic levels anyway.  greedy fist is very rarely necessary as little gets to live once a tyrant starts swinging.
x105 - keeping pace with my wins!

Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)

Latest Fantasy Result: ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!

Unless you have cursed die as I often do. Managed to "almost" loose against a Giantslayer which has no armor saves at all and only 3 wounds. Had 1 wound left after the encounter with the little bugger

Ye I agree Wildcard the Tenderiser makes a mess, but if fighting Dwarf Lords, Lizard Piranha Blades on Carnosaurs, Empire Rune swords, etc...getting rid of their Magic Weapon could be useful.

Also the +1 Armour on the Tyrant very handy vs. pesky Wood Elf Archers.

I do like the hunter builds on the original topic list however. :)

My Tyrant
 Samurai sword
 Brace pistols
 Beast Killer
 Wyrd Stone Neclace
 Greyback Pelt
 Greedy Fist
 Gnoblar reroll.

Well the Tenderizer comes in handy, but you lose the two wounds for one caused on large target from beastkiller ability when using it. Greedy fist saved me from a frostblade only last weekend vamp needed 5+ to hit  w rerolls and rerolls to wound, saved on the ward and POP went the magic weapon. Handy.
 Anyway thats my theory.

handy - but tenderizer works on vamps where the beastkiller doesn't.  Having longstrider too (my usual build) means that you get charges on things more often too.

I have been using my standard build Tyrant.

Wyrdstone, Tenderiser, Longstrider, Luck Gnoblar. HA. Stats: 5+ AS, 5+ Ward, T5 (charge 14"s, pursue 3d6)

Last night I tried a new build

Wyrdstone, Tenderiser, Greedy Fist, HA, Mawseeker, HA Stats: 4+ AS, 5+ Ward, T6 (stupidity 1/6 chance each turn not in combat, destroys magic items & mage levels)

The second build is tougher but less reliable.
