Big-nosed Gauls!

original thread ↗

OK everybody. Being much inspired by all I saw on this great website and in particular the other amazing Gnoblogs, here is my latest army: Ogres based on the comic series Asterix and Obelix. They are relatively simple conversions as I work on increasing my greenstuff skills. I hope you like them!

Started by not adding the gutplates, but filling the big hole in their tummies with GS and forming the pants.

Then moved on to add hair, big noses, and helmets...

The last one there is of course the menhir toting Obelix. I am immensely happy with the result. Although it took me the better part of a day, I think the green stuff work I achieved is my best ever, particularly on Obelix's arms (where I had to reconstruct the entire elbow joint) and re sculpting his fingers around the menhir at the bottom. I quite like the roman helmet too. In case you can't tell, the thing on Obelix's base (which I noticed you can hardly see at the back of the third photo) is a Roman shield modeled to match the ones in the comic.

Asterix is going to be a converted Gnoblar, and Dogmatix will most likely be entirely made from of GS if I'm up to it. I will also be having a butcher, the druid Getafix; a chief, Vitalstatistix; and others from the village like Cacophonix (BSB?), Unhygenix, Fullyautomatix, etc.

Unhygenix is there (I've given him a furry shirt like the books now, just no photo yet), and I'm not all that happy with the 'fish'. I'll try sharpen it up with a good paint job, but if it's still no good, I'll have to re-do it.

I've come to grief trying to decide what Asterix and Obelix will represent. Some have thought man-eaters (wondering the world, being great fighters and all that), some Irongut champions, possibly Bruisers. What you think?

Great work.
I'm a real fan of Asterix and Obelix and I had a half-baked try myself.
Yours is already so much better.

They even look like them with out being painted.
Did I say great work yet?

About what to make them.
If Asterix is going to be a gnoblar, then he'd be a groinbiter of course.
About Obelix: I'd put him just as an Irongut or if you're going to use a BSB, well a BSB then.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

Thanks! I was thinking of having Asterix mounted on an ogre base and counting as an ogre of some sort. (magic potion and all) I kind of like the idea of having Cocophonix as a BSB, but aren't too sure about that yet. It would just be a funny conversion, little harp and all and one can easily imagine his horrible noise causing the Gauls to surge forwards (or at least I can).  ;)

I think he would do better as a musician or a marker (but then tied up)

Great work. Beyond the one on the wall we had in Latin class I've never read any Asterix and Obelix comics, though I recognize them. Still, with work this good I have to like the army, even if I don't enjoy it for the theme itself.
Any chance of getting some more pictures of Obelix, particularly around the back? I've though of doing a mehir bearer as my bsb if I ever do one.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

Great job!
I'm especially impressed by what can be seen of that scultped arm of Obelix.

There was a painting competition with movie theme at my local GW store last year, where you were to convert and paint models so they could be recognaisced as characters/scenes from movies. There was one who came up with the Asterix&Obelix ogre idea, but it was too late to get started (the deadline was just days away), but the thought was to have Obelix as an ogre, Asterix as a gnoblar and then a regiment of Tomb King skeletons as romans for them to beat up.
I would say that Obelix has to be a Bruiser or a Maneater, considering that he's been on so many foreign adventures. That in turn would probably make Asterix a Manbiter.
All the same, I'm loving the conversions: the Ogres really look like the invincible Gauls!

Awesome!  I had the same thought too after seeing all the neat ideas here, that an Asterix&Obelix Gaul army would be so cool...great to see someone pick up the challenge!

Love the Obelix menhir carrier model!  My suggestion?  Run him and Asterix as a meaneater pair!  After all their adventures togther, that would make the most sense I would think?

Would love to see the tyrant sitting on a shield with sheildbearers, like the dwarf lord.
