Ogres vs Dwarfs

original thread ↗

I won't go into details but will stick with the highlights.

On turn 1, Having 3 butchers and only one spell I was able to cast was toothcracker. The other spells, I rolled 1's and 2's until I got fresh and roll 2d6 and roll two 1's... dohhh.

Jumping to turn 4, my tyrant +6 ironguts charged into combat with of dwarf unit and he had the character "shieldbearer". I thought the tyrant was "the" lord!! Came to find out that he was useless in challenges against the shieldbearer.
First, I has hitting on fours because of his WS 7. Then for wounding, every weapon that has strength 6 or more becomes str 5 so again I need 4's to wound. I caused him 1 wound and he passed his saving throw with no problems. Then he replies with his 2 shield dwarves and his lord. He hits on 3's and wounds on 2's causing 2 wounds. Then we went for another round and his initiative was the same but he won so he started first. This time he caused me 4 wound and I was able to save 1 of them with the 5+ ward save.

Is it me or is the dwarf army strong ????  That is wacky !!! I thought the tyrant was the king when it came up to challenges.

Feel free to give your oppinion about what you all think about this.

If thats how the dice treats you then well... i had 18 attacks none of them hit (today @ mad dog challenge) i did though, challenge his aspiring champion with my bruiser and managed to exactly kill him! I think that if you only want to kill those characters, stick skullplucker on a bruiser/butcher. (My bruiser killed 8 bloodletters the other game :P).
Munchmaster
Look, a pet gnoblar! Ill name him... Munche
The new dwarf lists are pretty hard-core.

In one of the WD the dwarflord guy smacked the poop out of the goldtooth tribe with Greasus.

This is why you never fight against Dwarfs without equipping your Tyrant with a Seigebreaker. Makes their too high WS moot. They generally all have a very low iniative so you should always be hitting on 3s, even against their strongest and cheesiest of characters.

Dwarf Lords can do that to you. And they tend to make their unit Stubborn, too...

In my experience, there are two ways of dealing with them.

- Ignore that one Dwarf unit entirely. Unlike Vampires, Dwarf Lords aren't mobile enough to chase after you if you concentrate on everything else in that army.

- Deliberately target the Lord's unit with overwhelming force. Have _everyone_ concentrate on killing rank and file Dwarfs, since those are the ones that'll get you CR and reduce his US. The goal is to win by at least 1 point and Outnumber him, at which point he's at a disadvantage because even if you don't catch him, it should take him more or less out of the battle.

Regardless of what you decide to do, a great trick is to charge his unit with some Trappers first (not like they're good for much else against Dwarfs - maybe blocking some Thunderer LOS, but that's it). Sure you'll lose - but Dwarfs Hate Greenskins, and so must pursue them if possible. Make him chase you into some woods, then watch him either sit there impotently for the rest of the game (well - he'll have 1.5" movement, so not _quite_ sit there), or draw him out of his line so that he a) will have an exposed flank and b) will not be able to support the Lord's unit with his other blocks.
Ave Caesar! Morituri te salutant!
Well the difference is that I don't make my army to go against 1 army. Who knows what I will face in a tournament. Besides, I spoke to a friend of mine at GW and he basically asked me if my opponent knew he was going against ogres ? And yes he knew about it, From what he was telling me, the items that he selected is to kill ogres and giants. In a tournament, he would do bad. I heard he had a game against vampire count after and lost big time.

Thanks for letting us know how you did, I know when a new army or a revised army comes out everone jumps on the "this army is too powerful band wagon" But after read some not all but some of the book and Playing against it acouple of times I think it is maybe I need to give it a little more time but the things they changed they didn't need to get any better at! Did they need better shooting? Did they need to be all but unbreakable? sure they still have the weekness of a M3 but really! And the no magic is more then made up for by there runes and dispell ability.
Dwarf Lords tooled up can take on just about anything.

Consider it a lesson learned.

Tyrants can lose.  So can Dwarf Lords.  As mentioned previously, make sure the Dwarf Lord and his unit are presented with few options.
