Rokgut's Tribe

original thread ↗

Hello all!  This being my first post, I'll introduce myself.  I have been playing WFB for a little over 10 years, but played O&G, Empire, and Dwarves.  I started and continued with Orks until about 2 months ago.  I got tired of animosity and the stupid stuff they can do.  In addition, laying down 20-30 units was just tiring.  Adding in magic and random movements of fanatics just made games drag by.

I sold everything I had and was going to drop WFB, but this lingering thought hung in my brain about Ogre's.  I've liked them since the book was first released, but didn't want to get into them at that time.  Well, now - I have and boy am I excited about it. The last two weeks or so, I've been trolling, reading posts and looking at other people's armies.  Now, I've got my base force built and I'm starting to paint and boy do I need help...lol!

I haven't painted in over a year and my flesh tones are definitely worse for the wear.  I'm going to post pictures, shortly, of the models and I'll update this as I complete units or projects.  I look forward to the comments and I'm really starting this army to get myself back into WFB (haven't played since 6th) and to start painting again.
Welcome to the Stronghold warwizard_99.

You've chosen a good army to keep your love of WHFB alive- ogres are alot of fun, and by far one of the most individual armies available.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

I was looking for something relatively easy to build and maintain.  After the monstrosity that became my O&G army I was daunted, to say the least.  I've spent a marginal amount of cash and built a pretty significant force.  Of course, I've only played one game with them at this point...lol!

My tentative list is as follows.  The unit size is first and the number of units is in parenthesis:

Tyrant – Siegebreaker, Luck Gnoblar
Butcher – Bangstick, Tooth Gnoblar
Butcher (2) – Dispel Scroll
Ogre Bulls x 3 (5) – Club, xHW
Iron Guts x 4 (3)
Gnoblars x 25
Maneaters x 3 – Cathayan Longsword x 2, GW x 1
Gorger x 1

Tyrant- Why take the Siegebreaker and not the Tenderiser? The Tenderiser is by far our best magic item and no tyrant should be without. And the luck gnoblar isn't going to do a thing with the light armor you have. Take some protection as well- either the Wyrdstone Necklace, or Jade Lion+ Mawseeker.
Butchers- They are alright. Drop the tooth gnoblar (you fail on a 2 even with the +1 so tooth gnoblars are next to useless). I suggest taking the Skullmantle as well on a butcher just to make braingobbler that much better.
Bulls- Bulls suck in combat, plain and simple. They are your support units and are used to get your ironguts into winning combats. Take no more units of bulls than you have ironguts. And give them a bellower so they can actually rally, and break ties.
Ironguts- I prefer them in units of 3, and if you just switch the 3 and 4 you get an extra unit and thus you a)present more targets to shoot at, thus increasing the chances that your hammers will reach combat, b)have more CC units, thus you can get into more combats, and c)give your characters more places to hide, thus allowing them to unit hop to get where they need to be and stay protected.
Gnoblars- 21 is all you need to capture table quarters. Don't take anymore. And get a unit of gnoblar trappers because they are one of our best units.
Maneaters- Expensive, and they fulfill the same role as ironguts. I won't give advice on them because I don't use them.
Gorger- Take two or none. You need the second gorger to ensure that one gets out early enough to actually matter.

You will always get better results and more coverage if you put your armylist in the Armies of the Kingdom section.

1.) I was thinking the Siegebreaker instead of the Tenderizer because it is cheaper and is +3 str instead of +2.  However, in re-reading the rules, I didn't realize that the Siegebreaker still struck last.  So I dropped the lone Gorger and added the Tenderizer.

2.) I only had the Gnoblars for fluff, and because I had 10 points I couldn't use on anything else. I've dropped them for now, in addition to the Gorger, and added a skull mantle to a Butcher that doesn't have the Bangstick.

3.) As far as Bulls, I am hoping to use them more as bait.  I think I will leave the IG's as they are for now, only because they are WS 3.  Out of 12 attacks, only 6 will hit and probably 5 will wound.  I don't have ranks or numbers, so need the combat res if I don't get a side charge off.  I am hoping to get the Bulls into flanks and negate rank bonuses.

4.) As far as Maneaters, honestly I only have them in the list because I have the models. I could see dropping them in favor of two Gorgers because I am not really sure how they will do.  I know they are way more expensive than a Bull or Irongut, for not much more payoff.

5.) Reg06 - I appreciate the info on the list, but not having really played them - I wasn't going to put the list up for review because I figured the list would just get butchered (no pun intended).  However, all of your suggestions are sound and I'm going to try everything except for limiting the number of Bull units and the 3 instead of 4 Ironguts.

Day 1 - 02/07/08

Tyrant Rokgut Maneater

Butcher #1 Confrontation Ogre with Orc banner as a weapon

Slavegiant

Leadbelcher Unit #1

Ironguts Unit #1

Bulls Unit #1

Bulls Unit #2

Bulls Unit #3

Bulls unit #4

Bulls Units 5 & 6

Gladiator Ogre I plan to use in my Mordheim warband.

Maneaters Unit

Almost completed assembly as of 02/14/08, I still have to put the weapons on the second unit of Ironguts.

The giant is a model I finished years ago for my now defunct O&G list.  The other painted models, the two Maneaters, the 2nd Butcher, and the Bruiser will all be stripped.  I'm not the best painter in the world, but I want this army to be mine.  I still have to assemble the Gnoblars.

I wanted to individualize most of the models in this army just to add flavor.  Hence, the different arrow wounds, shields, kegs, and bags on almost everyone. I tried not to go overboard on any one model but wanted a consistency along the length of the army.

Comments welcome!
Very nice, I espescially like the bull with thearrow sticking out of his head, I love little touches like that.

You know there's no pic limit to posts here at the stronghold though right? You could have amalgamated all those pics into a single post

Thanks
Corai

Thanks for the info.  I was trying to find out if there was a pic limit, but couldn't find that info.  Most forums I'm part of have a size limit per post, so that is what I did ;)

Thanks for the compliments.  That was my goal is to have a fun army, both visually and in game terms.
The army looks great so far.  I also love the arrows sticking out of the Ogres.  One thing to consider is putting the seige breaker on a butcher.  It makes him str 7 and they use their WS vs the oponents initiaive.  The skull mantle on another butcher is also awesome.  Nothing like a braingobblar panic test on -1 leadership.
The models look really mean and nasty and they look as if they can do a lot of harm to the opponets.

Thanks

I've finished stripping the other painted character models.  I've got everything lined out to prime and begin painting on.  My biggest issue right now is painting flesh.  I'm still looking for a good tutorial on painting flesh that doesn't involve 18 steps!
Stripped Ogre Characters

Gnoblar Unit #1

I'm looking at really getting into building the army now.  I just finished some very long standing personal issues and now have time to work on the hobby!
The following pics are my #2 and #3 Butchers.  I just finished gluing butcher #3 together so thought I'd post him real quick.  Both have been converted a little bit.

One butcher has a sword removed from the right arm and pinned onto the left arm (by a friend) and Butcher #3 had the hammer cut and pinned from the right arm onto the left.  In addition, I removed a horn from one of the spare heads and pinned it to the top of the hammer to make it a little more menacing.  In addition, I have one snaggle-toothed butcher and one iron-maw butcher.
