New Skaven Hero choice

original thread ↗

I know this isnt a skaven forum and therefore the response may not be great...

A friend of mine (skaven player) was getting annoyed at having to field warlock engineers even for magic defence and the rest of us arent fond enough of warp lightning (being on the receiving end and all) to disagree with that so i thought i'd tinker with some rules and come up with a hero level mage for skaven

Skavenseer - 75pts
Skavenseers are the apprentices of the feared Skaven Grey Seers. Rarely seen as they are ambitious to learn everything they can in order to assume the place of their masters. However on occasion they are sent to guard a particularly promising leader or more likely keep an eye on him when the Grey Seer has other pressing business.
               M     WS     BS     S     T     W     I     A     Ld
Skavenseer     6     3      3      3     3     2     5     1     5
Equipment: 1 warpstone token, hand weapon
The skavenseer is a level 1 mage and uses the lore of the Horned Rat. He may be upgraded to a lvl2 at +35pts.
He may take up to 50pts worth of magic items and may use arcane items and may also purchase an additional 2 warpstone tokens at +10pts.
Apprentice: Due to the suspicious nature of Grey Seers and the underhanded nature of all skaven you are only allowed to field a skavenseer if no grey seer has been chosen and only 1 may be fielded per chieftain or warlord in the army
Power Hungry: Grey seers and their apprentices are some of the most ambitious of all skaven and will often do things that cause them harm if it has the potential to further their position. At the start of any skaven magic phase if a skavenseer has any warpstone tokens he must take a Ld test (on base Ld), if this is failed he must use a warpstone token this turn.

Points wise a skavenseer fully upgraded is about 15pts more than a warlock engineer iirc.

you're a sick man stone dog   excellent idea!
I like it.
I've thought about it and it is quite right.
The leadership test is not that terrible to get and is still a little draw back.

I just don't understand, why an apprentice would be somewhere without his master.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

Because they're powerhungry, any chance to rise in the Skaven ranks should be taken with both hands and tail as far as the Skavens are concerned.
The fact that he's there alone might mean that his master has something to do that is so secret that he rather not have his apprentice near him or that the apprentice has grown to powerfull for him to control and a good battle can solve some problems there (being an unfortunate accident of some sort )

Love it by the way and the stats seem good

The Other White Meat - Win a game using ogres vs. High elves
Franzfurters - Win a game using ogres vs. Empire
Cold Meat - Win a game using ogres vs. Lizardmen
Steak Out - Win a game using ogres vs. Vampire counts
Past It's Sell By Date - Win a game using ogres vs. Tomb kings
Eat Your Greens - Win a game using ogres vs. orcs and goblins
I like it it. It looks balanced, and well priced, and very fluffy.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

Exactly as Aza said, sometimes a greyseer is busy or an apprentice a little too eager... or of course the apprentice could be plottnig and trying to get on the good side of the warlord
Skaven are so devious you can apply almost any reason :)

Glad people think its about right

although i have no idea about anything in the skaven world, these rules look good to me, espeacially power hungry.

Looks like an effective alternative for a Warlock
Long live the Fighters!
Bretonnian Duke (2500 points), Ogre Bruiser (500 points).
It looks good to me. Once upon a time i collected Skaven (Ok 2 years and i never really got into it)and i think it makes a good addition to the skaven army. It would be could to have a hero magic user without all those skree restrictions and in case you want a decent make user without any skree what so ever. I suppose the greater clan rules contain OK magic users for specific clans (eg. Eshin sorcerors and Moulder Harbringers of mutation) but if you want a plain warlord clan, there is nothing.

I like the fluff a lot too as it fits the skaven background so well. I expecially like the idea of the Greyseer getting threatened and tricking the apprentice into a suicide mission so he is not responsible. Gotta love those back-stabbing rats
Though I think it looks good, I think the current skaven heroes should be changed before adding a new one. The mast moulder, for example, only sees a game board for fluff reasons, and could be easily made into a mage to make him a more attractive choice. A plague priest could also be converted into a half mage, sort of like a sigmar priest. Both of these options would reduce the use of warlock engineers and strength the other clans.

Sounds awesome to me, and as a Skaven player, I'd love to have something like this available to my army officially!

Thanks,

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
