Big Unit Of Rhinox Riders

original thread ↗

Hi all,

I am seriously considering buying a unit of three Bull Rhinox as a large hammer unit.

Have any of you tried this, and how successful has it been? Any advice?

Thanks
I haven't done it, because moving that unit in anything but a straight line (combine the 150mm, I think, frontage with the "momentum" rule, or whatever it is called and you're stuck moving just straight forward) is going to be ridiculously difficult. And it doesn't have good ld, so one good cannon shot will turn that ~600 point unit right around. A unit of one rider, to make use of the free pivot and it's small frontage, and a unit of 2 (because just 2 rhinox riders is enough of a hammer to break anything but flagellants... and even then you've got a good chance of wiping out most of them) for your hammer.

They are pretty easy to make, just follow the conversion guide on the main page. I combined the 2 that are there for my final product...its in my gnoblar. I am still working on getting them painted. They are incredible in combat. very very stompy.
What I find really useful is Two Bull Rhinox and a Tyrant with Longstrider, if I fancy running around for a bit. Units of three can become fairly unwieldy, that's your only problem. The singular wheel also presents problems, but if you stick the lot with a Tyrant, you get the leadership boost that can allow you to just run them down the middle...

Normally though, I field two units of 1, on either flank...
I've done a unit of 3 bull rhinox

hell, I've even done 2 units of 3 at 2000 points once icon_biggrin

they represent a BIG investment of points so I generally give a unit a ragbanner (to help counter its Ld7) or a runemaw (If I have 2 units I field both these items!)

as for success - well yep, they are very killy on the charge, pretty killy even if they get charged, and downright nasty a lot of the time - but if you do lose them to a panic check or similar (5 wounds from normal shooting or a well-placed cannon) then you've gotta hope the dice gods are with you.  If you do lsoe a model and keep going, no sweat - 2 rhinox can still pound most units into the ground icon_smile

I'd highly recommend trying it for fun (and painting the FW models is a blast too - hence why I have 6) - but remember that they are not tournament legal and you ahve to ask your opponent if you can use them as they are not in the army book either.

they don't wheel much but get a unit up a flank and it WILL roll a battle line by itself.

Wildcard,

Can you tell me what you fielded in a 2000 point army with six of them please? I am intrigued!!

Skrenn,

The idea of my Tyrant with longstrider seems like a really good idea - especially with the Laurels to prevent panic attacks etc.

Thanks for the advice!
I had to dig this out of the amries section (about page 20 I think) but here you go:

I have a unit that I made using some models of large rhinos I found at a local $1 store.  They barely fit on the bases, but look cool, although the ogre on top looks like a midget, I still like them.

Anyways, I have used them three times.  I think a unit of three is somewhere over 500 points, but boy have they been worth it.  I have steam rolled through my opponent everytime.  It doesn't matter if they have taken a charge, they have held.  If they charged they were devastating.  I have taken out whole units of WE's with them.  I even ripped through a treeman without even worrying about it.  I don't take them much anymore, just because I found them so effective.  Although I am getting the itch to put them out again against my brother-in-law's steamtanks, just to see what would happen.

Thanks,
JC

If Carlsberg made hammer units Rhinox Riders would probably be the best in the world!

Seriously though, they aren't the be all and end all.
Limitations are massive points sink and (of course) they aren't legal, so only for fun games.
I've only fielded them once (so far) and they rampaged through a beastman army.
They stalled in combat against some similar ogre nastiness - either dragon ogres or a shaggoth, possibly. It was a while back. But some guts eventually reached the flank and put paid to the problem.  Against anything else, they rule!

Stanks, though. Ouch!  That is what the Tenderizer, Siegebreaker and Bullgorger cast on Ironguts is for!

Ugg
These Bööts were made for walking and that that's just what they'll do.
'Cos one of these days, Ugg Bööts is gonna walk all over you!

I knew that, but I don't necessarily plan on taking my bull RR's directly against his ST's.  I should have been more clear in that I want them in my army to bulldoze through his stuff the same way he thinks he will bulldoze through mine with this ST's.  Thanks for the reminder though, I WON'T forget!!!

Thanks,
JC
