The Rise of the Fallen

original thread ↗

14/12/07

I have long felt the need to collect 40K. Though it is generally held to be the less tactical of the 2 main systems, it does have two advantages that have led me to consider it:
a) Most people at my local GW collect 40K and not fantasy
b) I would say there is a greater scope for simpler conversion for 40K models

However, though I had long thought about it, I hadn't found a 40K army that fitted my tastes exactly: there was always something wrong. That all changed when the new Chaos came out. The models were awesome, were mostly plastic and had decent rules. Plus, as they were Chaos, I could convert them I saw fit. I bought the army book and never looked back. All I needed was a theme. Sounds simple right? Wrong.

It took me 2 months and many readings of the book to come up with the theme. But I think the time put into it was worth it. I decided to do an army of Fallen Angels. For those that don't know, the Fallen are the shame of the Dark Angels. They were originally Dark Angels guarding the Dark Angels home world of Caliban, but they turned to Chaos during the Horus Heresy. The Dark Angels defeated them in a battle that destroyed Caliban. However, many were rescued by the Chaos gods, who spirited them away. The Dark Angels believe that they have to extract repentance from all the Fallen in order to acheive forgiveness, and their overriding imperative in a battle is to capture them. I liked how this fluff sounded, and, as the current doings of the Fallen are not made known by GW, it serves as a solid foundation to my flights of fancy (more of which will be seen later).

I have recently acquired a bunch of Assault Marines, a Dreadnought, some Dark Angels Veterans, some random Space Marine bits and a Chaos Battleforce. I am currently building my Possessed Raptors. My Chaos Lord and an Obliterator are both fully converted and here are some pics:

I plan to use the colour scheme in the book, though I am having a slight problem. Any help on how to paint dark green armour would be very helpful.

Well, that appears to be all the rambling I have in me at the moment (I'm sure more will resurface soon, so I'll finish while I still can ;)), and I'll end this post with my army's motto, shamelessly lifted and adapted from Milton:

"It is better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven"

Well, good luck. For the names, are you thinking Biblical human (Jacob, Jebediah, Daniel and such), or Angel names (Ezekiel, Michael, Lucifer and such)?

Both probably, though I will focus most on angels (there is a list of the names of Fallen Angels on wikipedia that I intend to make good use of).

Don't paint them Green!

You will recieve nothing but flak from the internet for it. The dark angels green armour didn't arise until some time after the heresy. The Fallen Angel armour (and pre heresy DA armour) is black, usually with red trim. For examples, check out the ravenwing dark angels company as they have maintained their pre heresy black armour.

That being said, I love the fallen and have twice attempted to collect an army of them, although I personally went for the more 'tradgically misunderstood' than rampantly evil angle. Fluff exists to support both though, so it's al cool! (I actually wrote a bit of fluff about a fallen angel who was so indifferant he jacked it all in and started working in a bar until his peacful life was disturbed and he had to break out the superhuman killing machine within)

good luck with the army, I'll watch this one eagerly for developments

Thanks
Corai

Very characterful models there. I like the first one, but I'm not really sure what's going on with the destroyer guy. Is that a modeling wound I see on your finger?

Haha was about to say "Be carefull with that Hobby knife"  :D

I've never been into 40K due to the sci-fi fluff not being my thing on the otehr hand the models are soooo nice...

Love the things you did so far and I'm sure it will look even better when some paint has been applied.
Might get me enthousiastic enough to start an army myself...

Yep, sure is. Drove a pair of pliers all the way down my finger: didn't hurt much but bled a whole lot. Good thing my mum's a doctor :D.

Also, about the Obliterator. Originally, I bought a Necron Destroyer Lord for a Sorcerer conversion. However, this went a bit wrong, so I was left with a bunch of useless bitz. Then, when I got some Techmarine bitz from a friend, I had an idea and reused the Necron bitz. So far I am unsure what to use him as: on one hand he could be an Obliterator, or, on the other, a Chaos Lord on a Disc of Tzeentch with the Tzeentch Daemon Weapon. Though the latter option fits the rules better, I wanted an Undivided leader for my army and a Sorcerer, so I went for the former.

I said I would update this blog once a week and I stick to it. However, the model situation hasn't changed much, as I've been feverishly painting Ogres for a game at GW with friends from my school club (which occurred earlier today). Therefore this has to be a fluff update. I intend to tell the story of my Fallen in several sections, so that I can spend a decent amount of time on each and don't rush it. However, I will not be needlessly complicated, as that has spelt doom for much of my early fluff. All comments and criticisms are welcome. ;)

The Rise of the Fallen, Part One: The Aftermath

In the Warp, there is no time. There is no direction. There is nothing of substance, beyond that which the minds of men create. Truly it is hell, for the minds of men cannot comprehend such a realm, and not even those with great strength of mind can accept it, without a concrete place to give them a false sense of bearing, and preferably, some sort of shield between them and the creatures inhabiting the Warp. For the Warp is the realm of the mind, and is populated by the nightmares of Mankind.

Luckily for the Dark Angels Space Marines, standing on a chunk of stone that been torn from the planet of Caliban, they had both shield and solid ground. They would not be there long: material objects can enter the Warp but they cannot remain there indefinately. The very substance of the Warp rejects them, and tears them apart. However, this chunk had survived, for it was cradled in a shield, created by the Masters of the Warp. It took the form of a globe of shifting colours, predominantly sickly green, flourescent pink, deep blue and violent red. These colours swirled and mixed, seeming almost to fight one another for dominance, creating a kaleidoscopic effect that thankfully masked the creatures that congregated beyond.

Atop the rock was a building, partially in ruins, that had once been a form of meeting hall. Within were a group of 100 Space Marines, surrounded by the twisted forms that had once been people of Caliban. For a time, the Space Marines had stood in silence, or wept quietly, their expressions hard as stone while tears streamed down their cheeks. Not even Marines were immune to the fear the Warp provoked. But now, as their minds adjusted, their fear became curiosity, and a slight hubbub arose. This stopped immediately, when another Marine entered the hall and ascended the steps onto the raised dais in the centre of the hall.

He was an impressive figure. Like all of them, he wore a suit of black power armour, outlined in grey with silver trim. In addition to this he was dressed in a hooded robe of the same colour. He had removed his helmet, and his dark gaze surveyed the assembled Marines. A bionic eye cast a red glow across his pale skin, giving it a bloody hue. At his belt hung a large, ornate sword, that seemed to glow with an eerie light. However, what made him really noticeable was the great pair of wings that spread out on either side of him, and cast shadows on his body. They were black like his armour and shaped like those of a giant bat.

"My Brothers!" he declaimed, raising his arms and fully unfurling his wings, "It is a true honour to be in your presence, for you are the chosen of the Four Powers! I am The Herald, a Lord of Chaos, and sworn servant of the Four Powers. Your lives, and mine, have been saved by the Powers, when they brought us safely into their domain to protect us from the fratricide of those who were once our brothers. We owe them a debt of life: a great debt. The False Emperor demanded that we waste our lives in eternal servitude, while those we trusted plotted against us. The Four Powers however will remain faithful to their chosen servants, and offer great rewards of glory, power and immortality. Who then deserves our service more?"

The echoes of the speaker's voice lasted for a long while. The assembled Marines stood quietly, digesting the speech. They heard no falsehood in the Herald's words. Many were already envisioning the gifts that the Herald had offered, and cruel smiles adorned their lips. Others bore expressions of conflict, some last shreds of loyalty holding them back. However, there was no real choice: in their souls, each Marine already knew that he was already, irrevocably damned. The Herald waited and watched them, as if he observed the thoughts of each Marine. Then he repeated his question, in a voice that reverberated around the meeting hall: "BROTHERS, WHO DO YOU SERVE?". The answering roar, voiced from 100 throats, seemed to make the very air shake: "CHAOS AND THE HERALD!"

Nice fluff, and I really love the possessed wings. I can't really tell but is the obliterator morphed onto the necron destroyer thingy, or just kneeling on it?

Technically, the 'Dont' in the phrase 'Dont you get it?' should have an apostrophe in it, between the 'n' and the 't'.

The Marine has melded with the Necron tech. When he's painted, I'll come up with a full backstory to explain him.

Right, as I completely new to 40K, I would like advice on building a 500pt army. I plan to make an army composed of a Chaos Lord, 2 squads of Chaos Marines and an Obliterator (a more helpful list will be up soon). Any pointers are welcome.

A merry post-Christmas to one and all! Work on the Fallen has stalled what with the festivities, and me and my brother getting a new Xbox 360 elite (plus Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4). Therefore, this pic update has to once more be of WIPs, but rest assured that my Fallen Lord, "The Herald" will be making a fully-painted appearance just as soon as I decide on how I should paint his wings  :). Without further ado, here are the pics of those Possessed Raptors I have so far based:

Essentially, the fluff behind these guys is that they were once Assault Marines who welcomed weaker Daemons into their bodies in order that they might inspire greater fear amongst their foes. The real reason is that, I dislike the Raptor models, like the Raptor rules, love the Possessed models, hate the Possessed rules, and had a friend with a lot of spare Assault Marine Jump Packs. After combining the best elements of both, I came up with something I could live with.

Enjoy (and please respond concerning advice on building a 500pt Chaos army),

I like the lave base a lot, did you just leave a few pathways clear of sand to put the lava on?

Looking good ghworg. The lavasl base looks great, and you've got a nice smooth colour on the white robe (like the freehand there as wel). the only thing I'm not to keen on is the black armour. The highlights seem a little thick and blend in too closely with the wings. I personally prefer shadow grey for black highlighting than codex, but if you want tostick with codex, try giving the armour of black wash to kill some of the 'extremeness' of the highlight

Thanks
Corai

Thanks guys for your much-appreciated comments!
@Mr Marshmallow: This is how I did the lava bases:
1) I painted the top of the base blood red
2) I sand-flocked random areas, then painted the flock Chaos Black
3) I then painted blobs of Sunburst Yellow on areas of red
4) Finally I put blobs of Skull White in the centres of the Yellow blobs

@Corai: I'm not such a big fan of using Shadow Grey highlights, as I reckon the blue tint might throw off my monochrome colour scheme. However, I will try the black ink wash and maybe also the basecoat I used for my wings (2 parts Codex Grey, 1 part Black). Also I agree about the highlights being a bit thick: especially around the gauntlets, which I shall probably leave black next time.

Thanks again for the kind comments,
Ghworg

Naughty Gnoblog! I leave you on your own for just over a week and I find you halfway down the second page! What did I tell you about wondering off, hm? ()

In order to get this Gnoblog back to the place it deserves, I need to post some pics. Due to exams, I haven't had much time to paint: however, I have managed to finish the first of my Possessed Raptors: the Kimimari Brethren. Kimimari is the name of the type of Daemon inhabiting their bodies: these Daemons are Khornate and are distinctive as they form weapons from their bones, which are as hard as adamantium. This attribute has been passed to their hosts, who now bear weaponry grown from their bones.

Anyway, pics!

Enjoy!

Cool looking stuff, but the grey highlights on this are extreme. If you feel like it, I suggest going over the model and reducing the thickness of the grey lines by about half. I probably works in person from table top view, but up close they become blaring huge.

regarding painting marine army black at speed: I've heard good things about lightly drybrushing the model in your preferred highlight tone (I like Shadow Grey but I know you prefer a more monochrome look) then an even lighter, selective drybrush of one step lighter. Then wash the entire mdoel with black ink. Not sure iof this helps. I haven't tried it yself, so if you have some spares around, might be worth trying on one of them first, but it could save you a lot of time when you come to painting ful on squads of fallen.

Thanks

The best way I find to highlight black is to drybrush a mix of chaos black and codex grey, slowly increasing the ratio of grey: black with each coat. Looks spiffy and can be done fairly quickly.

Right, OK. Firstly thanks everyone for the advice with my highlighting difficulties. However, I think I may stick with the current formula for doing so for a couple of reasons: firstly, I'm prepared and actually looking forward to spending a decent amount of time on each model. I have long been inspired by Christian Byrne's Will of Iron series in White Dwarf and like him, I want to convert every model in some fashion, to create a unique-looking army.

On the drybrushing, I feel that that would interfere with the black-red/white contrast scheme I have going. Although, I could use Black Ink, I had a little test run with it, and didn't particularly like the effect. So I feel that what I have to do is keep the highlights thin, and seeing the effect of that on the first Possessed Raptor, I'm happy with the result.

The one thing I am worried about however is the lava base. I feel it looks less realistic than the last one, due to the lack of cooled lava-rock. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I would put less on the base for the lava say a thin ring with sloges coming out graduelly well is my advice, keep the paint work from my point of view Brill! :)

Right on the cusp of what I consider a week, it's time for an update. No pics this time round I'm afraid: I still haven't finished my current Raptor and I want to stop taking individual pics, so I want to get at least another one finished before pics. Therefore, I think it's time for a fluff update.

The Rise of the Fallen, Part Two: Reprisal

Methusalah II was a small world, of no great importance. It held no vital strategic position, had little mineral wealth and so far had no significance to any known xeno species. It was far enough from the borders of the Imperium that it escaped the constant warfare there and was far enough from Terra that it had escaped ravaging in the Heresy. A small-scale rebellion had occurred as they had occurred everywhere, but the Imperial Governor was loyal and the rebels had been swiftly dealt with. In short, Methusalah II was a small corner of peace in a galaxy of war.

Due to the lack of any useful minerals and threatening lifeforms, Methusalah had been designated an agri-world. Most of its inhabitants spent their lives growing crops or herding grox. Herdman Orath was one of the latter. He was driving the pick of his herd to the great market at the world capital, a long walk made longer by the stupidity of the lobotomised grox. However, today the weather was nice, the end of the journey was in sight, and soon he would be able to return home to his wife and daughter. He went on to think about what gift he would buy them with the proceeds from the sale of the grox. This had been a custom of his for many years and was his way of apologising for his long absence.

Soon Orath had entered the market. Due to the long distance people had to travel to come to it, the market was a biannual affair. Twice each year, almost a quarter of the planets population would be congregated into one area. The noise and the smell of the beasts that were brought was unbelievable. Orath, used to the peace of the countryside, hated this, but accepted it as a necessity. It was here after all that the big buyers were, the meat and grain corporations that controlled the shipments to all parts of the galaxy. He found his family's allotted space in the herding pens, one that had been held for many generations, and began to advertise his grox, his one voice almost swallowed up in the surrounding cacophony.

Evening came on, and the noise diminished slightly, though the smell did not. Orath had met up with associates in one of the many temporary bars that were dotted throughout the market, and was engaged in salving his hoarse throat with some cheap beer. It had been a good day: a large portion of his grox had already been sold at a fair price, to a corporation with which Orath's family had done business over many years. He was also feeling incredibly pleased with himself in that he had found the perfect gift for his wife and daughter: two matching necklaces both hung with amethyst, that reminded him of their eyes. He took them out now, and dangled them before his eyes, his body suffused with the warmth of alcohol and self-congratulation.

It took a second for his life to change. It began with a noise like a dull thump. Then came a sound like a vast hurricance, roaring like some mad beast. The walls of the tavern seemed almost to bend. Orath fell to the ground, closing his eyes. Even shielded behind the walls, it still felt like he was being pulled at by a giant hand. He could hear screams and the crying of beasts from outside. Then suddenly, it stopped.

Orath climbed slowly to his feet, then, shaking with shock, he stepped out of the tavern. Outside was a scene of destruction comparable to nothing he had seen before. The pens were shattered, the posts torn from the ground and scattered. Many stalls were wrecked, and their wares were strewn across the ground. And among these were the bodies. Like grain thrown up and fallen to the ground, they lay in haphazard fashion with sprawling limbs, like puppets with their strings cut. Sightless eyes stared, while blood flowed lazily and pooled on the earth. But what really drew the attention were the figures that now stood in the centre of this destruction.

Many enormous figures, far more than he could count. Each one wore armour blacker than winter nights, edged with silver. All of them wore helmets that hid their faces. They were human-shaped but had not a shred of human appearance. And each one held a weapon in their gauntletted fists. Slowly, they began to fan out, the grace of their movements surprising. Then as one, they turned inwards to the centre, and raised their heads. And into the air rose a new figure. Orath was struck dumb as another of these armoured giants slowly rose into the air, like some hideous angel, on a pair of vast, grey wings.

"My brothers!" the winged giant cried, his voice shattering the silence. "Our lords have given us this first gift. This planet has been given to you, to do with as you will, for a full Terran week. Brothers, I command you to avenge yourself on these worthless scum who demanded all and gave none!" A roar accompanied this. The winged figure spread its arms wide and almost yelled "Then brothers, go forth, and be free!".

The giants exploded into movement. Many people had come, attracted by fatal curiosity, and these were the first targets. Guns cracked and people flew backwards. Others began to scream, and turn to flee, too late. One giant, hefting a strange weapon fired an incandescant bolt that went straight through three people, setting each of them ablaze. Another had trapped a man beneath his boot, and was focusing yet another strange gun at his head. As Orath watched, horror-struck, the man's head began to melt, his skin running like hot wax. More giants wielding swords with an eerie glow sliced people apart one piece at a time, while others forbore weapons and simply struck out with hands and feet, crushing skulls and covering themselves in blood. A few giants chased down women and hauled them off, shrieking, out of Orath's sight.

Orath turned and ran, through the tavern, through the back door, away. He ran unheeding, giving himself to the animal need to escape. Then suddenly, a thought broke through that restored his humanity. He had forgotten the necklaces! Suddenly, it seemed like the most important thing in the world. He did not know why: he just had to get them. He began to retrace his steps, listening all the while. Now and again he came across bodies. He tried to ignore them, especially their expressions. But he knew some of them would haunt his dreams to come if indeed he would survive beyond this day. However, Orath supposed that the armoured giants had moved on to fresh victims. He probably wouldn't encounter any.

The tavern was still standing. He entered through the back door which was ajar. A corpse was wedged in the gap. Slowly he entered, scanning for the necklaces. There! On a table still upright amongst the debris. He lunged for them, and then stopped suddenly, as they were snatched from him. Before him stood the speaker, the winged giant. Somehow he had remained unseen in the shadows. Orath, from within the depths of his fear, noted that the speaker's face was uncovered. He was surprised to see that it was human, with skin pale from lack of sunlight. His gaze was drawn to the speaker's single organic eye, and there his blood ran cold. There was nothing there, no emotion. Just a void, illuminated by the light of madness.

"So," the speaker said, idly playing with the necklaces, "these are yours yes? Gifts? Who for? Wife? Offspring? Mistresses? Well I'm sad to say that whoever they're for, they won't get them. My Angels will have scoured this planet within a day. Who knows, they may be kept alive, if any of my Marines feels the need for slaves. But I think not. It's the release you see, the pure pleasure of freedom from the countless restrictions. It's like a drug. You have to break even more rules. And more. And more." The speaker laughed, softly, and walked forwards, until he stood right before Orath. "I don't really know why I'm telling you this," the speaker went on. "You'll be dead soon. But I suppose the best person to talk to is a dead man. You don't have to watch what you say."

As he voiced this, the speaker almost seemed to spark up. Stopping in front of Orath he said "I know. I'll give you one question. One thing to ask, before I kill you. Go on. Take your time: I'll be disappointed if its a bad one". Orath stared, stunned. Then suddenly he shouted at the speaker: "Why? Why are you doing this? We have nothing you could want! Why do this if you can get nothing out of it?!"

The speaker sighed and shook his head. "They always ask why," he muttered. "In this whole galaxy there is not one shred of originality." He looked straight at Orath. "Why?" he began, almost as if he himself was unsure. "Why? hmmm. Well, if you want a motive, I think it's your life. You see, lives are a precious commodity, and if we take enough of them away, we will be rewarded. Your planet may not have much, but it is teeming with life. Though," and now he chuckled grimly "not for much longer. You see, we need a home. Somewhere safe. And there is this one place that's about as safe as it gets. However, it'll take a lot to get us in there. But with enough sacrifice, nothing is impossible." He grinned. "However, you could just as easily say I do it for fun." His grin grew wider and in his eye, the madness flared. "Well," he said. "You've had your answer. I'm almost sorry I have to do this. Almost." In a blink of an eye, the speaker had drawn his sword, and impaled Orath on it. The grox herder slumped to the floor. The speaker removed his sword and watched, impassive, as it absorbed Orath's blood. He fancied he could even hear the herder's screams as the daemon within engulfed his soul. The speaker sheathed the sword, and strode to the door. In the doorway he stopped for a moment as if remembering something, then dropped the necklaces and calmly crushed them underfoot as he went out into the night.

Hope you enjoy this!

Update time again! Still no pics I'm afraid, but my Raptors are coming along nicely: I have enough bits to make 6 of them, so I'll have to buy a few more Possessed to get up to 8. 3 of the 6 are nearly done, 2 of the 6 are assembled and undercoated and the 6th is still to be assembled (I'm converting him from a metal assault marine sergeant, and I've run out of superglue).

Anyway, back to the update. This time, I think I'll give you guys a flavour of the army I intend to collect with 2 army lists, a 500pt one and a 1,000pt one.

500pt

HQ
The Herald: Chaos Lord with Power Weapon
115pts

Troops
Fallen Angels: 8 Chaos Marines: 1 with a Flamer
125pts
Blood Powers: 8 Khorne Berserkers: 1 Skull Champion
183pts

Heavy Support
Moloch: 1 Obliterator
75pts

Total: 498pts

The aims of this army are pretty transparent. I basically intend to hot-foot it across the board with my two main assault units, the Lord going with Chaos Marines. The Marines will target horde units, while the Obliterator focuses on heavily-armoured troops and vehicles. The Berserkers will simply do what they do best and attempt to slaughter as many things as possible.

1000pt

HQ
The Herald: Chaos Lord with a Daemon Weapon, Wings, a plasma pistol and meltabombs
170pts

Elites
Sarfael: Chaos Dreadnought with an additional close combat weapon, a heavy flamer and extra armour.
120pts

Troops
Fallen Angels: 8 Chaos Marines: 1 with a plasma gun, 1 with an Icon of Chaos Glory, 1 Aspiring Champion with a Power Fist
185pts
Blood Powers: 8 Khorne Berserkers: 1 Skull Champion with a Power Fist and meltabombs. Unit rides in a Chaos Rhino with extra armour.
263pts

Fast Attack
Dark Seraphs: 8 Raptors: 1 with a Meltagun, 1 Aspiring Champion with a Power Sword
185pts

Heavy Support
Moloch: 1 Obliterator
75pts

Total: 998pts

This is a slightly faster and more numerous incarnation of the first list. The Lord will now go with the Raptors and they and the Obliterator will target vehicles. The Khorne Berserkers will aim to punch through the enemy battleline, supported by the Chaos Marines. The Dreadnought will be used to distract attention away from this main punch and also to deal with horde units. His main selling point is that he should perform pretty well against the large amount of Ork armies that may be springing up.

All comments and criticism are welcome.

With no other vehicles in the army (1000 point one) I realy can't see that dreadnought surviving past the first turn. They always seem to take a lucky lascannon/railgun/bright lance etc hit that has them as molten slag before you even get chance to move it. I'd at least equip it with a ranged weapon instead of the addition ccw so that it may get a turn or two of shooting before it's ripped apart by enemy fire

Thanks
Corai

Ah, but if I equip it with a ranged weapon, there's a chance that that weapon will then be turned on my own Marines: twice! It's not something I want to risk. Plus, I don't think I could spare the points for it.

i have to agree with corai. your rhino will survive with smoke, but the dread is too risky. so i would drop it, get another rhino and man for the CSM, two more men on te bezerkers and MoK on the raptors. then you would have a much faster, more stable army that is likely to get to your opponent intact! also, conider plague marines, they're AWESOME!

Work on the Fallen has gone slowly this week. However, luckily I have some progress from last week to show, as I have finished my Bug Raptor and my Melta Raptor. I'll post pictures of them separate and then another group shot with the other two models I have painted. In addition to this, I have redone my Lord's Daemon Weapon: I felt that just painting a sword red doesn't really do justice to the malevolent force of the Daemon within. Therefore I have painted it balck instead and added some greenstuff flames.

Enjoy!

Love the metla raptor. the magic flame is awesome. Is that a stock piecxe or have you converted it?

thanks

corai, that the possessed sprue. it such a great buy as you get so many cool daemonic bits!
ghworg, for 'melta' raptor (great idea, by the way) have you adopted corai's shadow grey highlights? looking good anyways, want more!

Could we see the sword of the lord a bit better, from the side maybe?

Everything looks good, I really like the possessed/raptor conversions.

Flame, in all the tutorials and such I've looked at, goes from lightest to darkest though, whereas you've got it like a normal darkest to lightest piece. I think it might help a bit to switch the order around :)

Technically, the 'Dont' in the phrase 'Dont you get it?' should have an apostrophe in it, between the 'n' and the 't'.
-Oh, crap!   It's the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
-The Most Bestest Site Ever!

Hmmm, I think you have a point there Mr Marshmallow. However I'll put repainting off for a bit, and  explain it away by saying that the Chaos Daemon within the Raptor has caused the colour of the flames to reverse for some reason (My favourite thing about Chaos is that you can use it to explain anything!).

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. I still haven't done any painting for the next batch of Possessed. However, I have nearly finished building all the models. However, doing so has caused me to run out of Possessed bitz so, tomorrow I will go into GW, buy myself some Spawn, and use bitz from that. I need some Spawn anyway, as I'll be using them as Gorgers in my Ogre army. As well as building Possessed I have also nearly completed my Berserkers' Rhino (I'm taking a very unorganised approach to building my army) and built a new character for my Dark Elves, combining a wingless Dark Pegasus with a Malus Darkblade model and the weapon of a Dark Rider Champion. As I don't really have anything else prepared then, I'll post a few WIP pics of my Rhino.

Rhino:

As you can see, I really went for a spiky theme. This is because there is a Daemon trapped within the Rhino, and to keep it placated, the Berserkers impale body parts as sacrifices on the spikes. In return, the Daemon protects the vehicle (counting as smoke launchers/extra armour), or may even take control over the Rhino if the crew are incapacitated (Possession). The Necron body is used by the Daemon as its eyes, and is attached to the Rhino by tentacles that fuse with the transport. I intend to use some spawn bits in order to make the Necron body look more Daemonic.

Thanks,

Ghworg

Sorry about lack of updates last week, but from last saturday to this saturday I am on a ski holiday in France. Thus, no painting progress with my Fallen, but I have managed to come up with a new 1,000pt army list, which is hard, fast and will hopefully hit like a ton of bricks. One of the main changes is that I have decided to have a Daenon Prince leading my army rather than a Lord. As such the model I was previously using as my Lord is now my Possessed Raptor Aspiring Champion (I intend to use Dark Angels Veteran conversions for all my Champs). To represent his Possessed status, I'm gonna make him a bit more daemonic, so watch this space!

In addition to this, I've worked out my fluff a bit more. Major changes are that my Fallen no longer worship the Four Powers but another force known only as The Beast, a strange entity who is equal in power to the Chaos gods but does not appear to be one of their kind, who they see as their protector and guide. In order to maintain favour with this force, the Fallen gather the souls of their foes to feed it. These souls are stored in the icons borne by the squads.

I will post the new army list when I get home.

Thanks,
Ghworg

Sounds like some cool fluff. Is the Beast still in formative stages at this point? Or if not, is it an entity along the same line as the Hive Mind?

2/3/08

Right, this is the first of two updates today, to make up for not doing one last week. This one will be an army list update, so I can get some thoughts from the community as to whether this list is good or not.

HQ
The Herald: Daemon Prince with Wings and the psychic power Warptime
155pts

Troops
Marine Squad Invidia: 10 Chaos Marines, 1 with a Flamer, 1 Aspiring Champion with a Power Fist. The squad rides in a Chaos Rhino.
230pts

Berserker Squad Ira: 8 Khorne Berserkers, 1 Skull Champion with a Power weapon. The squad rides in a Chaos Rhino.
233pts

Fast Attack
Raptor Squad Superbia: 8 Chaos Raptors, 1 with a meltagun, 1 Icon-Bearer with an Icon of Khorne, 1 Aspiring Champion with a Power weapon.
230pts

Heavy Support
Obliterator Squad Avaritia: 2 Obliterators
150pts

Total: 998pts

The plan with this army is as about as blunt as a brick to the face, and with about as much style. Essentially, everything but the Obliterators will rocket straight forwards, concentrating efforts to punch through, then roll up, the enemy's battleline. Primarily the Raptors will head for heavy vehicles, the Marines will deal with horde units and the Berserkers will charge anything that takes their fancy. The Daemon Prince and Obliterators will act as support, with the Obliterators primarily targetting enemy vehicles or power-armoured troops.

If anyone's wondering about the names, I matched up one of the 7 deadly sins to the unit that most suited it, then used the latin versions of the names to give it a more stylish feel. I'll supply the translations here:
Invidia = Envy
Ira = Wrath
Superbia = Pride
Avaritia = Greed

All advice for the list is welcome,

Ghworg

I didn't really notice this gnoblog before, but it has some nice fluff and cool looking conversions.

About the list, it looks quite solid, although I have one question about the Herald. Does he join the unit of raports or does he operate on his own? Because on his own he is a bit to vunerable, I thing,

I envision him joining the Raptors to be protected from shooting, but once he's among the enemy, he's adaptable enough I reckon to help out with anything that needs doing.

Also, welcome to the Gnoblog! Progression will be slow, but updates are generally regular, so stay tuned!

Right, this is the 2nd of two updates and it's a picture update! I've finished painting two more of my Raptor squad, and as I'm no longer going to use a Chaos Lord to lead my army, I've had to remodel the model that was originally going to be my Lord, in order to make it look more like an Aspiring Champion (boy that sentence was convoluted). Basically, I just replaced the model's power sword with the Possessed power sword: with a pair of Possessed wings on his back as well, I think he looks the part.

OK, these are pics of those 3 models:

Sorry if some of these are at a bad angle, but editing didn't seem to work for most of them.

Enjoy anaway!

OK, I'll level with you guys. I have nothing worth showing this week. A bout of laziness on Friday, coupled with an similarly lazy Saturday which I spent most of putting off an obnoxious history essay (though I have finally managed to complete Halo 3 :D) and a Sunday spent hanging around in GW meant little to no progress on the WH40K front. I seem to be flagging a bit with the painting (I've conceived a great dislike for the models I'm currently painting, heaven knows why), but hopefully will get back into gear once I can start a new unit.

Please be patient (and thanks for the comment BigD!)

Man, that whole "regular" thing was good while it lasted. Back to the good old random update system. And, speaking of random...

You know the feeling when you look at some bits and pieces of different models you have lying around, something in your brain suddenly connects them in your minds eye, and then won't let you do anything else until you've tried it? Well this is the fruit of one of these moments. I'm thinking of using the model as my second Obliterator. If anyone's wondering, the arms, legs, backpack and weaponry are from Tau Crisis Suits and the torso and head are from a Chaos Rhino Crewman.

Sorry about the white undercoat: I did it when I was young and foolish. I'll soon cover it with soothing black.

Enjoy!

Looks good, but the GS will stick out like a sore thumb once you come to undercoating it. As it's destined for obliteratordom, why not work into the GS a bit more and make it into that stretched, warped skin the obliuts tend to have?

Thanks
Corai

That GS will stick out, like Corai said. And go one step beyond giving it that warped look- with this much Tau bitz stuck on you want to emphasize the daemonic energies that make this conglomeration work. Put that warped flesh all over, and really make this look like a daemon has taken up residence.

I agree with Corai and Reg06. It looks too Tau-like now.

Hmmm, I'm thinking of perhaps greenstuffing warped flesh around the joints. To make it look more Chaosy, I think I'll sculpt the faces of trapped souls on certain areas. Also, I plan to make the model a little more spiky. However, progress may be slow, as the anime series I'm watching right now is nearing the end, and is getting pretty exciting.

Thanks for the comments (I guess I should do random stuff more often, eh?),
