I don't even play CSM (so far) but I had this idea in my head about a fallen chapter that I just had to get out:
A History of The Children of the Dark Sabbath
The Children of the Dark Sabbath are a vile renegade chapter, completely given over to the worship of Slaanesh and pleasure through their dark music. They seek to corrupt and destroy the good works of the Emperor, not because of a long-ranging plan to topple him, but only as an act of pleasurable vengeance against the Imperium.
This chapter began as the Children of the Sabbath. A descendent chapter of the Space Wolves, their home world was Suomia IV, a cold planet but home to a thriving society of industrious workers who built massive cathedrals in the name of the Emperor and supplied the Children with great warriors, librarians, and bard-chaplains. These bard-chaplains, in addition to watching over the chapter, also composed music in honor of the deeds the Chapter did in the name of the Emperor. It was perhaps the vanity caused by writing music that caused the fall of the chapter, for it was certainly the Chaplains who led the fall.
One of the Chaplains, Brother Iommi, suffered a grievious injury in a campaign at the hands of a chaos lord wielding a demon weapon. His throat and hands were injured, impairing his ability to create the music that had made him so beloved in the chapter. However, he continued to produce music, altering his instruments so that he could play them even with his injuries. This caused a profound change in his music, making it sound deeper and more violent, but many of the Marines still listened to it out of respect for him, and his music was played in the cathedrals of Suommia IV like the music of the great bard-chaplains before him.
It wasnt long after this, however, that an Inquisitor came to the planet to investigate the sudden disturbing proliferation of suicide cults, believed to be linked to Chaos worship. What the Inquisitor found defied belief: the youth of an entire planet, formed into blasphemous covens and fighting against their elders. The only thing linking many of these groups was a love of Iommis music, and the Inquisitions gaze turned to the Children of the Sabbath. What they found proved that the chapter was damned beyond any hope of salvation whatsoever.
The space marines had completely forsaken the Emperor to live lives of debased pleasure, subjecting themselves to every mind altering substance they could find and ruling Suommi IV like corrupt overlords, picking the most notorious rebels to join their ranks. It appeared as though Iommi had been infected with the taint of Chaos, and whatever art he put he produced reflected his mutilated body and warped mind, causing those who listened to it to fall to Chaos. The Inquisition could not stand for this.
On the Suommia systems Emperors Day, known to them as the Sabbath Day, the Inquisition invaded to put an end to the rebellion for good, and the youth of Suommi were almost all butchered by Inquisitorial storm-troopers, an event that was recorded by the Children of the Sabbath as the Dark Sabbath, the event that made the chapter officially and permanently declare war on the Imperium. While the Inquisition burnt the planet, the Children of the Sabbath launched a surprise attack against them, killing as many of them as they could and even stealing sacred relics from the Inquisitors for the sole purpose of desecrating them. Then, the Children fled into the lawless areas of the Galaxy, seeking only the glory of the Chaos Gods.
The Children are a growing chapter, their insane and bizarre music attracting droves of Slaanesh-worshippers, including rogue Sound Marines, to serve as allies and servants. The Children raid Imperial held-worlds seeking to desecrate the temples and relics of the Emperor, believing that the perversion of holy art combined with the blood sacrifice of captive innocents will earn them the favor of Slaanesh. They reserve a special ire for the Inquisition for their role in the destruction of Suomia IV and as destroyers of art. They often go out of their way to attack inquisitors and their retinues, as well as Grey Knights and Sisters of Battle. Their strategy of attacking while these Inquisitional forces are investigating or purging heresy has earned them a reputation as the dark saviors of the cults of Chaos, but the truth is that the Children are self obsessed and care only for making their music, earning the favor of Slaanesh, and avenging themselves against the inquisition.
