finally an army on the good side of the line - dwarves

original thread ↗

After dark elves, khorne and orcs & goblins, I'm starting a dwarven army.
Don't look that strange at me, as if I'm a freak! :?
I'm not the only one with that many armies...

Okay, my goal is to make a tournament worthy and ready army ( as is always my goal with an army)
This time a dwarven army for when I'm lazy and don't want to move that fast

They are getting a winterish theme and will all be wearing capes with fur ( I have some ideas for slayers, but that's for later).
A friend of mine suggested fur on the boots, but that doesn't work always, so I'll let go for the moment.

My first unit of 20 warriors with handweapon and shield have their capes already and are actually drying right now.
I wanted totake pictures but with the lighting here, that wouldn't be worth it.
The greenstuff was actually pretty easy to put on the models and I like the effect at the moment.

There are a few things I want in this army:
- they all have to wear capes ( bar the slayers)
- they are all going to be on magnetic bases.
- I want to take the time with them.

things to decide:
- colour scheme ( I have a nice cape I can use for nice colour variation.
I was thinking a bout a scot like clan colour.(like the tartans)
Still I don't know the colours to use.
- units that are going to be in there.
I have my warriors and miners and handgunners, but what units do I want for the rest.
- main army play and tactics.

so lots of work to do ( next to my other armies)

If you can help me with colours I'd like the suggestions:
3 colours and the have to look good with a bronze/golden colour

Sounds like this'll be a cool looking army.
You may have already found this link, but here's a CMON article on tartan painting, http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/40.
And here's a pretty guide link to a website about tartans, with descriptions about the different sorts as well as a huge library of tartan patterns (unfortunately finding a place where you can just scroll through every tartan at once is hard), http://www.tartans.scotland.net/.
In terms of color schemes, reds and greens would probably look best with bronze and gold (but with any snow they'll start to look Christmasy). How's this?
In terms of units to field, I've always hated fighting Ironbreakers and hammerers. Hammerers are great because the become stubborn with a thane/dwarf lord in the unit, and ironbreakers are just about impossible to kill. Longbeards I've always found to be too expenive, especially when the dwarf warriors already have good weapon skill.

Thanks Reg.
I'll use the article when I start painting and the picture here is probably what I'll use.
Maybe a lighter brown or probably I'll use blue instead, so I can have some mud spatter.

I finished my first unit dwarf warriors.
They got the plaid motive on their cloaks and I hope it's not that rainy tomorow, because if it is rainy it is already too dark to take pictures.
The colours I used are blue and brown and a fortress grey stripe.
It's fun to use a lot of gold by the way :D

I have an idea to play dwarves by the way ( read: something completely different.)
I want to use some warmachines to lure the enemy to me, and still move forward myself.
So using that "I'll move before the battle banner"
the problem I have is that I have to use smaller units, lesser units or take a chance with panic tests.
The idea is 3 or 4 blocks sending forward and have some warmachines and shooters in the back.
The idea is, that there will be units passing me, but the rear of my fighters should be for my warmachines.
Maybe a unit miners ( or am I going over the top now?)
Because of the banner I can be in combat in round three and actually that is where you want to have big blocks of dwarves.
Most battlefields have a small corridor anyways so the flanks of the fighty units are pretty well protected I guess.

Sounds cool, get those pictures up soon. We're in beard defeficiency now.
Actually, I don't think there's been a dwarf gnoblog on the Stronghold.

Edit; nope, nevermind. There's been a couple small dwarf gnoblogs a while ago. Didn't mean to get your hopes up.

Finally some pictures
They are a little on the bright side ( honestly there are shades and highlights)
They are also very big, which shows more ugliness, then in real life.

Very nice tartan, the units look amazing.
Though I would add just a couple of littel details to make the tartan stand out more:
1.where the same color lines meet, the color becomes lighter (not darker). So, where the fortress gray lines meet, make a small dot of white; and where the brown lines meet, make a small square with a lighter brown;
2.wash the cloaks with a thin wash of diluted black-brown mix (about 80% water and 20% paint). This will give the cloak natural shadows, without the risk of painting over the tartan

the beards need a little highlight too, and the bases, with some grass, will make them stand out even more.

Overall, the units look very good.

cheers

My my Lexy, another gnoblog? You might be the one with the highest number of them  ;)

But seriously...the tartan is a nice, original look for your dwarfs. Did it take you long to do the tartan? And how do your dwarfs look from the front?

Good job on the dwarves, and especially the tartans. ikim is right though, you need a little dot of a lighter color where the grey lines meet. And on the red lines, that square in the middle is a little hard to see (it could be the pictures), and it looks good as is, but a little lighter would help the pattern stand out.

@BigD, No I'm trying to stay under Corai's number
Actually it doesn't take long.
When the blue layer is done, it wasn't even an evening's work ( the promiss of a fniished unit is a good incentive by the way)

For the front, use the links in the post (they are a little overlighted)

Ikim, Reg06: I'll do the dots the other way around.
I'm staying away from the wash for now though, because I want to test that on something I don't mind if it goes wrong.

The bases are going to be done, when I have my magnetic bases in and I want them to be in a "High in the mountains" setting.
So some rocks and snowlike stuff.

I'm now applying the tips I was given.
I am now washing the furs on the cloaks and the beards.
After that I'll even try the wash suggested by Ikim.
I'll highlight the armour too and try something better for the shields ( the blue)

Okay, so I think the warriors do look better, thanks Ikim.

I'm starting a unit handgunners now.
Cloaks themselves are done, so now only the fur on their shoulders.
The actually look better then the warriors.

I'm planning an army of dwarves with two units of miners.
I really like the idea of opponents thinking what to do against two merging units with ranks and banners.

I would think like any ogre would...I would count the blessings of merged food. Twice the food in one place! And the food is even nice enough to mark their position with not one, but TWO banners  ;)

with two units of miners you could squish an army from the flanks scary
WEll, with ogres yu still would have a problem, because if you stay behind waiting for the two units of miners you are so far behind that you'll get another couple of rounds of shooting over your head.
And a unit of bulls don't win from a unit of miners.
4 ironguts might just win.

Pez, if I can threaten them from the flank, my opponent made a huge mistake.

I'd be an embarrassment to get flanked by dwarves. Having said that, I once watched my friend's dwarves chase down some chosen knights for about 3 turns before finally running them down. That was ridiculous.

That will boost my model count op. :P

I'm modelling the capes on miners, but I'll wait for the afternoon to see if I can get a prospector with steamdrill.
That'll make the unit 15 and that is a part of my plan.

I have prospectors with steamdrill.

They are important in my dwarven plan.
The idea is to use two units of miners and use the anvil to pin the enemy down.
or at least a part.

I glued the second unit miners together and a unit longbeards

I started painting my first unit of miners.
I've started the skin.

Two general things (but I'm not going to right it in ALL my gnoblogs )
1. I've bought two display cupboards ( can't come up with the real name) from a famous Swedish store that sells furniture.
So I can display my armies nicely ( which will be a frustration for my two cats ( they can see it, but not break it) )
2. I get my new 50" plasma screen this afternoon,
So, I won't be painting much this afternoon :P

The Dwarves look really nice, inspiring in fact. I think I might restart my Dwarf army! It was one of the first armies I ever had. The Tartans look good, a nice selection for the colours. The miners look good to! I am looking forward to seeing some more.

Cool. I like that you've painted the troll head gold, simply because it is a new way to do it. You've done a nice job, but if anything needs something it's the hair- the beards and mohawks are the signature feature of slayers, and extra care should be taken to make them really pop. But despite that they look good.
It's hard for me to like the unit because I hate the models (or more to the point, I hate the how static they are, and I'm bitter no dynamic plastics were made, which would have been great looking). And those feet are terrible, like big monkey hands.

Because I couldn't paint a fair share of the weekend I'm working on the bases now.
They all have sand on them and my slayers, longbeards and a unit of warriors are painted and have static grass on them.
a unit handgunners and another unit warriors have their bases painted and I can do the grass on them.
For two units I have to paint the bases.

After that the following actions will be done for my dwarves:
- paint crossbow dwarves
- sculpt cloaks on ironbreakers ( I have old school models of them)
- paint ironbreakers
- sculpt cloaks on warmachine crews
- paint warmachines and crew.

Then I have to think what kind characters I want.
I'm first thinking of making it a running dwarves army and after that go to a more conservative style.

Can somebody hand me a proper name for this army?

Thanks

I assume by you saying that your going for running dwarves you are taking the BSB with the rune that gives everyone a free march move?

If thats the case and you want a fitting although maybe tongue in cheek name why not call them the...

"10 minute mile clan" or something similar a play on the famous 4 minute mile but being dwarves your a lot slower :).

A tactical question if your going for a aggressive dwarf army you cant protect your flank using terrain or side of the board. So are you going to run your units wide (IE 7 to 8 across) to create a larger frontage and lower the chance of being flanked?

no, just 5 wide, with slayers on one side and ironbreakers or hammerers on the other.
My friend used it an it was a fun list, he got to top 33 percent of tournaments.
funny was that alot of people didn't know what to do.
