2250 pts Ogres

original thread ↗

Hi all. I'm thinking of selling my Empire army and start to play ogres, manly because everybody at my local gaming club think they suck and I whant to prove the difference  8) And another point with this army is to keep a low budget... that's why there's not 2 units of Yheetes  as I would like it...

So here you go:

2250 pts Ogres:
    Tyrant @ 311 Pts
General; Ogre Club; Heavy Armor; Luck-Gnoblar (x1); Causes Fear
       The Tenderiser
       Wyrdstone Necklace
       Jade Lion

    Butcher @ 160 Pts
      Hand Weapon; Causes Fear
       Siegebreaker

   20 Gnoblar Fighters @ 40 Pts

   20 Gnoblar Fighters @ 40 Pts

   20 Gnoblar Fighters @ 40 Pts

   3 Ironguts @ 179 Pts
      Bellower, Standard Bearer, Lookout Gnoblar

   3 Ironguts @ 179 Pts

Total Roster Cost: 2249

The list is made in armybuilder since I don't have the armybook yet

Cheers

EDIT BY MOD: just trimmed the point costs of the magical items in line with forum rules, cheers :)
Not too terrible all around. For a 2250 list, though, there just seems to not quite be enough ogres on the board.

I'd put a bangstick on one of those butchers before I put a skullmantle on one.

All those extra hand weapons are costing a fair amount of points.

There's far too many gnoblars in this list. -1 or 2 units would be a good thing.

The maneater by himself will be shot to death/mostly useless. Another gorger will out peform him 90% of the time.

Try to trim some of those points out for another unit of ironguts. If you work one in, strip the unit upgrades and the standard from the unit of bulls that currently has it, and move the standard and lookout to the new unit of ironguts.

Kadrium, again, got everything right. Gnoblars are nigh upon useless, I only ever take the one mandatory unit (for table quarters). The key to making a good Ogre list is how many ironguts you take, you have not enough, and too much of everything else.

Jade Lion is fine if you are playing wth Mawseeker, but as it is, your tyrant doesn't need it. you can save points for more Ironguts that way. You also have only one scroll... I would usually bring more unless it's just a friendly game.

I like maneaters, but Kadrium is right... either take 2 gorgers to disrupt the enemy backfield (the more powerful choice) or take 2 1-maneater units to quicksand your flanks and bust chariots (only if your heart is dead set on maneaters due to fluff or the uber-awesome-sweetness of the Maneater models).

You also over-bought support ogres... 3 units of bulls and 2 leadbelchers is just too many for supporting only 3 units of ironguts. You have all the tools to get the enemy right where you want him but no one to follow thru with the beating. even if you pair your maneater with the tyrant to be a hammer unit, it still puts you with powerful flanks and a weak center. Upgrade either 1 unit of bulls or 1 unit of leadbelchers to Ironguts.

EDIT BY MOD: item costs trimmed again
Overall your list is really looking solid now, but at least one of those gnoblar units is really still expendable, probably 2.

For your butchers, a bangstick is going to be of much more consistant use than a siegebreaker. I'm not afraid of combat with my butchers, but there's no reason to force them into it more often than you must. The siegebreaker is nice, but the bangstick is much more useful and much preferable.

Your leadbelchers can also use some bellowers to help them with charge baiting properly.

If you knock off two units of gnoblars, you've got 80 points there, which can buy your bangstick (55 left), a bellower for each unit of leadbelchers (35 left) and another Dispel Scroll (10 left). Pull the plug on the siegebreaker (40 now left), and yank the bellowers from those irongut units (80 left) and you can add in a second gorger (5 left).

Gorgers really work a lot better in pairs, and ironguts really don't need bellowers that badly, especially when you have three units of bulls and two units of leadbelchers out there playing support. You have plenty of units with which to set up baited counter charges and supported flank charges with your ironguts, so it shouldn't be difficult to put yourself in a position to smash things up real well in combat.

With the 5 points left, buy something frivilous like a sword gnoblar or 2 extra fighters.

Swapping the two gnob fighter units for the gorger and changing around the bellowers and butcher equipment would really strengthen up the list. More magic defense, less unreliable gnoblar fodder, still one unit as a speedbump and table quarter claimer, better gorger support from the back lines, the bangstick.. These are all very good things, and an improvement over the gnoblar blocks.

1 scroll???

not enough, methinks.

be careful not to post point costs too!
x105 - keeping pace with my wins!

Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)

Latest Fantasy Result: ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!

8th edition: 105/25/12
New ogres: 36/6/5

I was born and bred in a briar patch!
Sorry about the points costs posting... it's made in armybuilder sp that's why.

One scroll is going to work fine for me, I've played Warhammer for about 4 years and never used more than one scroll.

I'll try the gnoblars and se how these work... 40 pts for these kritters is a bargain I belive.

And about the extra gorger, if I use one more then I'll have 2 identically rare choises. And this will prevent me from playing at alot of sweden tournaments... they are pretty harsh on army composition here sometimes. 2 scrolls also puts me down.

And again thanks for incredibly fast replys!

Wow. Those are some flat retarded rules. Gorgers are the only good rare choice we have, that sucks they dock you or even fully prevent you from playing, if you double up on your rare choice.

i have seen a few of the sweedish tourney lists - and the rules are such that some list changes are good... specifically, abandon your rare slots unless you are permitted Dogs of War.

a single gorger is a waste (may show up, may not). a single maneater is a target (but could be useful as a bodyguard). a slavegiant or unit of maneaters is too much of a pointsink.

If you can't take two gorgers, don't waste the 75 points on a single gorger, it just isn't worth it.

I've been thinking about the singel gorger matter and I can't se why it won't work... and how should I take care of warmachines and the like without it?
A single gorger at 2000 points and above just isn't enough threat to deal with warmachines. Your opponent will have more than enough stuff back there to deal with a single gorger (and people make an extra effort to with something back there when playing against ogres). Where 2 gorgers could survive the gauntlet and get at least one in, a single gorger will just be snuffed as soon as it comes out. And at 2250 you need your gorger on turn 2, 3 at the latest. There is a very good chance that'll happen when you have 2 gorgers, not so with just one.

I get your point... but if i can get his warmachines to shoot at the gorger instead of shooting at my main army then it may be worth the points just because of that...
Only it doesn't take much shooting to take out a single gorger, and he probably won't use his warmachines, he'll use whatever he left back there because he knows you are taking two gorgers.

So you all suggest that i drop the gorger.. but what shall I spend those 75 points on instead?...
Personally, I'd drop two units of gnoblar fighters and get another unit of ironguts. Or drop those same gnoblars and get another gorger.
