A must in every Ogre Kingdoms army are the Gnoblars. The numerous groups of these little bastards provide the outnumbering bonus Ogres so sorely need.
So, concerning ranking them up:
If you are simply using them for outnumbering, you could simply rank them up in blocks, yeah? But, if they are to provide protection from gunfire, you could rank them up in two long ranks - it'd impair their maneuvrability, but it'd also do good for their sharp stuff, for example when they're being charged and decide to Stand and Shoot. It'd also make them harder to flank charge! XD With ld 5 that'd do them good.
What do you think?
Also, a question: are the little mofos even big enough to protect Ogres gunfire?!

They do ofer a prtective screen yes, but imho this impairs the army, as they where not made to sneak up on the enemy behind ranks of Gnoblers, but rather to go thundering into the enemy at top speed, with Gnoblers in support.
I go 4 wide, 6 Deep in units of 24. This works a charm

I prefer them in blocks as well, although I'll porbably go 5x5 instead of 4x6.
As said, protective screens aren't working wonders since gnoblars are much slower than ogres and thus they are likely to be left behind.

I had to Google Big Red Book to figure out it meant the WFB rulebook - I thought it had something to do with Mao.

Ah, thank you for the opinions.
Yes, I am probably going 5x4 since my units are 20 strong.

Then I would go 4x5 because otherwise you would only need one casualty in order to lose your rankbonus, which is the reason for deploying in blocks instead of screens.

for me it depends on who I'm up agianst agiants dwarfs I use them in a 2 rows of roughly 35 so shooting cover of 70cm which I hide my ironguts and other strong units behind, when against magical enemys i use them in a 49 strong unit with 7 rows of 7 and next to ironguts so the rune maw can work its magic as D6 S4 shots will do some significant damage with two lot of that per turn so it is rebounded onto my gnoblars and does little more than 10pts of damage. I suppose I should stop now as I started rambling on into my tactics not just ranking up gnoblars.

Hmmm.. Tasty bit of info there, might try that one of these days.

Nevermind the width/depth, the topic here was actually whether to put them in blocks or strips.
Anyway, good advice, thanks!
I'm really a noob... XD

If you put them in strips and put your Ogres behind you're loosing the best thing about Ogres! Movement! I play without Gnoblar fighters (Scrappies and Trappers only) because I'm using the speed to the limit and the Gnoblars won't cope up. But when I occasionally use'm (very rare) I have them 4x6, or 4x5. Four width and 5/6 depth. Why? What makes the Gnoblars worth fieldning? Their ranks and outnumbering not their fighting abilities. Therefore minimize the width.

No, then you would lose your Rank bonus, the only important thing about them...

One thing i wanted to point out....(before we drop the thread ) is that the gnobbies have bickering so that can block your movement for a whole game! be careful in where you place them

Grok, where can I see a complete pic of that converted gorger (if that is what it is)
Grokfol Elfchomper04 Jan 2006
No, that's the concept model for a gorger, made from Rat Ogre body with a Squig as a head Here's a link:

Not field gnobbie fighters? Are you nuts?!? A 40 point unit, even if it never sees 1 second of combat, can scarf up a board quarter and give you 100 VPs, or at least deny them to your opponent. And I have found that no matter HOW much your opponent understands just how truly worthless they are (in terms of VPs), they will STILL shoot at them and throw magic at them from time to time; shooting and magic they COULD have thrown at my ogres.
Then throw in the chance they manage to get someone to charge them, exposing a flank, or if they even manage to sneak in and charge someone ELSE'S flank...BOOYA! The only BAD thing you can do with them is charge into a combat already containing ogres just to give numbers, but against a foe that can kill more gnobbies than the bonus they give you. don't charge them in against opponents with lots of attacks. that will hurt more than help.
