1k Noob Army - thinling asks gutlords for a morsel

original thread ↗

Hi all,

first post! Yay! Recently I've been captivated by the urge to do an OK army. I'm hoping not to break the budget, and to take my time on modelling it up, yadayada.

The theme for this army is Ogre Pirates. Yeah? You thought of it first? Sue me. Lol, seriously, I love Leadbelchers and I can't get it out of my head that they have stolen guns off a ship. AVAST!

Anyhow, here's the list:

The crew of the Jolly Gorger:

Jugbug Whaleshanks, Bruiser, Seigebreaker, Fistfull of laurels

2 * 3 Bulls - nude, well not really *phew*
4 Ironguts
9 Gnob riggers (trappers)
22 Gnob Swabbies (fighters...hardly)
2 * 2 Leadbelchers - bellower
Gnob Gunners (DoW cannon) - if anyone has played Curse of Monkey Island, you'll know why I had to include this "Whose side are you on??!"

As you may have guessed, I'm a guy who likes a hearty belly laugh, and this army will have more than a little bit of 'LoL' in it. In the expanded list however, I'm going to include a rather sinister butcher conversion, so it won't be all roflmao's and biscuts...

As my army is based on a ship (beware the Jolly Gorger if ye be a rovin'!) I'm going to limit what I can take, the following are not going to be in the army:
- Yhettees
- Scraplauncher (I love these, but I can't figure out how to fit it in, help!)
- Rhinox riders
- Slaughtermaster
- Gorger

Anyway, hello to you all, and please C&C welcome.
Welcome icon_smile and it's good to see a pirate ship coming along...

Question: What do you get when you cross a shark with an Ogre?

Answer: Swimming Gorgers.  No sense wasting meat when walking the plank or sinking a ship from range... Instead of the gutless being thrown into the dark underground caves, they are pitched overboard. They learn to swim and eat like sharks... heck, they probably eat a few sharks.

Where are the Ironguts? You need quite a few more... you have 4 ogre lure/flanker units (leadbelchers and Bulls) but only one hammer. take at least one of the leadbelcher or bull units out and buy 2 guts with the points... then split the 4 ironguts into 2 units of 3.

The first thing I would suggest for the Scraplauncher is Greek Fire, but that isn't really a pirate weapon... pirates want to get aboard and take the loot, not sink the ship. This will take some more thought...

As far as what you need for $$$, You can build most of what you have listed from the battalion box. You can probably scratch-build a cannon or else you will have to buy one. You will beed to buy more gnoblar... just get a box of fighters and decorate them differently and call them trappers, don't buy those blisters; it's a waste. The most economical way to do it would be to take away one group of 3 bulls... turn two into Ironguts and one into your bruiser. That will involve some creative greenstuff/modeling to give three bulls great weapons, but it is possible (see the Butcher's Cauldron/Halfling Cookbook forum for help...)
Ogre General's Warning: Following any advice or suggestions proposed in this post could be hazzardous to your win/loss ratio. The poster above has an inflated opinion of himself and a talent for sounding like he knows what he is talking about when he is actually clueless.
Beware! Black Sales. What can I say, cool theme but it needs quite a bit of work and patience, I hope you've got it. I can give one suggestion, make your banner, if you're going to use any, something pirate-themed, maybe old style black background with white skull would be a bit boring, but you know what I mean.

Good luck with the army. Shark gorgers sound quite crazy and great but it needs quite a lot of modeling with green stuff, and if you don't want to spend so much money on it... Butchers could be the cooks.

The list you made looks good to me. Most people like having more hammers, but I prefer more light troops, some are good for sacrifice cheap, and if you come from flank, there is not much difference, whether its a unit of guts or bulls.

I really can't figure out how to fit yhetees or scraplaunchers there yet. So I guess it would be cool to use more leadbelchers and maneaters.

As I said, hope this project works out and post pics  icon_wink
The Scrap Launcher Could be a giant mortar stolen from a big ship, which is held by a couple of ogres and crewed by a leadbelcher with the help of some scrappers.

The SlaughterMaster would be the head chef

-Julius Caesar

Current Record:
Played: 10   Wins: 3  Draws: 2  Loss: 5
Thanks for the responses guys, once I get started I'll be sure to get some pictures up.

Sterling, thanks for the suggestion of more IGs. I was suprised they fit, but that'll mean that I can make a bruiser out of the battalion, although I might use the pirate maneater, cos he looks so cool!

Shark gorgers eh? Iiinteresting, I'll give it some though, but I don't acutally like gorgers all that much, and my rare slots at 2k will be taken by the cannon and some maneaters.

I had an idea for Yhetees! I will be modelling them up as Orangutans! I wasn't going to have any in the army, but flank charging infantry units with three angry, giant Orangs is too cool to pass up icon_smile. I shall call them Oragutees...

Thanks for the suggestions for the scraplauncher, but I still don't know what to do with the Rhinox, not the sort of creature you want to take on a ship. Oragutees you can lock in the hold, good luck doing that with an angry Rhinox..
The army is actually pretty good. I would however try and get a Butcher in there: they are invaluable. Give one a Bangstick and you have a brilliant surprise 1st turn sniper.
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
